"There is definitely more to our music than 4/4," Haake explained to the Miami New Times in 2008. "But the main thing is the 4/4 feel. For us, that's a very important aspect to it. It helps us in giving the music a certain amount of flow. You can actually - at least on a good night - get into a groove. If you want to translate it into being, 'here's this number of bars in 23/16 and this last part turns into 30 16th notes and starts over,' that's not how we perceive our music. glad you listened to meshuggah! most of their songs are in 4/4, but the rhythms underlying that 4 can be very, very intricate. most of the patterns resolve naturally to 4, but in some they add or subtract from the pattern to resolve. the snare is usually always 2 & 4, which means the drummer has to internalize all of the rhythms with the kick (usually) against the straight 2 & 4 - it's absolutely amazing. listeners who don't know much about polyrhythms etc. might only hear the basic 2 & 4 and think the song is straightforward. but learning the patterns underneath everything makes it insanely more complex. i love the vocals being longer phrases juxtaposed with the shorter syncopated patterns. a song i think that easily shows this concept is Do Not Look Down. you can take the intro as a basic odd time thing. but then that odd time is played under the 4/4 when the song kicks in and you'd have to learn how that pattern "morphs" around within the 4. it's amazing writing. it's a shame some people can't get over the vocals, but i think it's such an integral part of the music as a whole. as you said, powerful. i love meshuggah!
Love checking in on your daily videos. Keep up the great work and branching out into the music outside of your wheelhouse. Request - anything The Mars Volta

Man love your reactions and insights, you need to react to Sepultura Dead Embryonic Cells, pretty sure you will love it cause is fucking 🔥
glad you listened to meshuggah! most of their songs are in 4/4, but the rhythms underlying that 4 can be very, very intricate. most of the patterns resolve naturally to 4, but in some they add or subtract from the pattern to resolve. the snare is usually always 2 & 4, which means the drummer has to internalize all of the rhythms with the kick (usually) against the straight 2 & 4 - it's absolutely amazing. listeners who don't know much about polyrhythms etc. might only hear the basic 2 & 4 and think the song is straightforward. but learning the patterns underneath everything makes it insanely more complex. i love the vocals being longer phrases juxtaposed with the shorter syncopated patterns.
a song i think that easily shows this concept is Do Not Look Down. you can take the intro as a basic odd time thing. but then that odd time is played under the 4/4 when the song kicks in and you'd have to learn how that pattern "morphs" around within the 4. it's amazing writing. it's a shame some people can't get over the vocals, but i think it's such an integral part of the music as a whole. as you said, powerful. i love meshuggah!
The Meshuggah song I'd like to see you review most would be "I".
No one is ready for that
Just listening to it takes you on an out-of-body Astral tour.
Great explanation! why I love their ambiance just impressive almost other worldly 🙌🏼🔥
Tesseract..
Love checking in on your daily videos. Keep up the great work and branching out into the music outside of your wheelhouse.
Request - anything The Mars Volta
This band man, this band... And no one talks about how good the lyrics are.
This is what I have been using to convert my friends! This vid not only has the lyrics, but it also dislplays the theme of the song quite well. The lyrics are what completely put them over another bands, as if they hadn't already done that by the Music alone hehe. Completely underrated.
EDIT: this below,is the "THIS" from the original comment - ua-cam.com/video/fhVv8-6-Cd0/v-deo.html
@@panchoperfulcro8708 Word
Facts, honestly some of their best songs are made 100 times more awesome by great lyrics. Dancers, Do Not Look Down, Perpetual Black Second, this one, Lethargica... Oof, just what a band, honestly
@@AgainstTheeWickedlyMusic Lethargica is lovecraftian material, so good, so fucking goooooooood.
@@panchoperfulcro8708 100% agreed. Funnily enough, there's times in my study hall at school that I'll read Lovecraft while listening to Meshuggah. The rotation is normally Meshuggah, Morbid Angel, Revocation, Humanity's Last Breath, and sometimes some others, and it really causes a certain vibe hahah
Born in Dissonance is a masterpiece. Sounds great live.
if you listen to any other Meshuggah song, listen to Bleed.
And if you do, please check out the drumcam version of “Bleed”.
@@rmr5044 You speak the truth! All of your alternatives are superior.
How original...
@@rmr5044 so what? it's an incredible song that is a must listen.
@@complexdevice ha ha... yep, what we all need is another Bleed reaction to add to the other 5 million.
This video was great because Born In Dissonance is not Bleed. Ha. Imagine your first introduction to Meshuggah NOT being Bleed! It's a veritable miracle!
Bleed by Meshuggah is a must listen! Great reaction!
Brother, please react to ”TesseracT - Of Mind: Exile”. Super groovy progressive track. I would love to see you counting to that track :’D
Just Perfect... understanding music without judgment
Gotta do Opeth & Gojira now.
Bleed is like the essential Meshuggah Track for people that are starting listening
You should give Igorrr a try. Maybe the song Downgrade Desert.
Igorrr is dnb and band fusion. He wont really Know whats drummachine or drummer
@@deadhead2983 neither do i.
Fully agree on the hit-hat keeping the pulse clear and in a way that marks the divergences the groove and arrangement impart.
Grandmaster Tomas Haake on the drums!
Gotta checkout "Bleed", or "Dancers to discordant System", or "Demiurge", or "New Millenium Cyanide Christ", or "Clockworks" or... you get it :'D
it's all pure heaven
There are 2 types of people in life. Those who can be technical and those who can be emotional. You have both my friend. I love listening to a kick ass song and watch you get into it than of all things, explain it. Cheers!
Recommend: "Relentless Mutation" by Archspire
Human Murmuration as well would be one to check out.
Great synopsis. I'm a Meshuggah fan and it's great to hear someone who understands music and it's power really appreciate the musicianship of this band.
One thing to note about Meshuggah is that the drummer never strays from that divining rod of tempo. In virtually every single song there's gonna be a cymbal or something in the background that you can nod your head to through the entire song.
Luckily ive seen them twice im concert. Words cannot describe the how amazing it is to hear there master pieces and see the syncopated light show
Throwing out Mick Gordon - BFG Division as something you should check out. \m/
So glad I found your channel. Really enjoy your honest reactions and technical expertise. I'd love to hear your take on Unleash the Archers - Awakening. A lot for a composer to tease apart. You rock!
React to Mr Bungle, anything off California
Funny thing about Meshuggah is before you figure out what they're doing rhythmically, and the song feels like odd time, you don't feel a groove at all; then once it clicks and you figure it out, you hear the groove and it just feels massive.
Yay! Meshuggah! The founding fathers of Djent. I highly recommend checking out their other songs:
Bleed
Rational Gaze
Future Breed Machine
Clockworks
OR, if you want to try something REALLY OUT THERE, try their 21 minute track "I".
Keep up the great reactions!
Yesssssssss MESHUGGAH!!!!!!!!! Let’s watch a composers mind melt.
While i find meshuggah's sound to get a bit dull after a while, no other band has managed to even come close to repeating it, so when your in the mood for meshuggah, nothing else will do
Like sushi their is no substitute but when you are done, you're done.
Loved it! Though im not a consistent listener of Meshuggah, i really enjoy listening to people digest the songs for me so that i get a more nuanced image of the songs.
Really awesome breakdown and reaction
Fascinating! Great format
Love to see a lot of Dancers to a discordant system suggestions finally. The live ophidian trek version is just UNJUSTIFIABLY INSANE
I love picking apart music like you do, I play a lot of guitar and that's why I love metal because its complexity and unique riffage, and virtually every band is different
yo man gotta say, just noticed ya started back up the youtube career..man im lovin your perspective, lots of joy pouring out in your reactions and its very inspiring to watch and hear the stuff you caught that I missed! cheers! new sub!
Opeth-Bleak. Great song with really interesting composition. Anything by Opeth honestly is really interesting.
The lyrics, along with the music, makes this song so visual and heavy
First place I surfed was in Maui at Kihei Cove. Beginner but grew up skateboarding. Live the thrill of those sports. Great video.
Hey Sir you’re Diving into a lot of stuff I love DT TOOL N MORE KEEP UP YOUVE TAUGHT ME a Lot already about some things
As an avid Meshuggah fan, I'm so happy that you immediately latched onto the percussion as the indication of where the beat is. There's so much metal out there, or metal-adjacent music, that isn't really "head-bangable", which is a huge detraction for me, but almost all of Meshuggah's music is.
growing the channel nicely... well done, great content.
Merci à toi. J'avais déjà une vision de Meshuggah et maintenant j'en ai une de plus, grâce à toi. Et c'est pas fini ! Ils sont tellement complexes...
"GNARLY RIDE"" Best description of Messhuggah ever
You should really check out the band Car Bomb, they mess with time and tempo unlike any other band I've heard. Great video
