I remember in tenth grade driving my car and listening to this album on 8-track over and over and over again. I can say these guys and music altered our lives sanctioning a generation to be unique and unashamed of our uniqueness. We have passed it on to our children now... their mark on this world is indelible. What an amazing band! Rip Ric and Ben! You are two of Bono's voices we will forever miss!
So sad to hear you have left us....but now you are with Ben, and you can play together again. The Cars will always be part of me. Thank you for the great music !! You won't ever be forgotten and will always be played until i can't play your records anymore. One LOVE
Yes RIP Ric .. this had to be a truly amazing live show - so many 70's bands really knew how to play and write great songs - you will be missed but your music lives on and is enjoyed by so many - also really happy that you made it to the Rock and Roll Hall of fame last year .. hope you keep rocking wherever you are now !!!
Yea, not a lot of people know that Benjamin Orr was from Cleveland then moved to Columbus Ohio. Ric saw him playing there while he was in another band.
Love and miss these guys day in and day out. Still listen to their music................. follow them on twitter as well. Their live performances are 2nd to none. Just amazing.
this was the band that made the final love of the music I would follow with a huge passion. I wasn't in to disco nor heavy metal and I didn't find what awoke me until the CARS came out in the New Wave music industries. Los Angeles K-ROCK help too in sharing the best music of the 80's. Thank you Melanie of Hawthorne for sharing this awesome video. Wished I was there.
This is a powerful version of Good Times Roll. Gawd it sounds good. One posting suggests the audio is actually from the unreal concert in Houston. I don't know but it definitely sounds good.
Thank you so much, Ric. So many good memories of you and your band mate's. Your fans love you, and will miss you. I'm sure that you and Benjamin are having a blast!
+97warlock ismyname There were two US festivals. One in 1982 and another in 1983. The Cars played on Saturday in 1982. I was there. Pat Benetar also played on Saturday.

I definitely was there to see my Cars...tried getting up to the front. But they were pushing so hard (the crowd) that they stopped playing until everyone backed up 3 steps in the first few rows... Pretty intense! ! But after that it ROCKED Great memories...
Maybe memory fails, but what made The Cars set so stunning was the military jet flyover from behind stage with contrail as it began. Didn't see that here.
This is the US Festival in 1982 in San Bernardino, California. It was billed as a tech event for the upcoming Apple company but they wanted it to be a party atmosphere. Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs partner at Apple, put it on. Bill Graham promoted the show and hired all the bands to play. Steve Jobs thought both men were out of their minds. He was right. The event was a huge money loser in the short run but we know how it turned out for Apple
The Cars get pretty deep with this take of their song. Nevermind which take it is, the Cars Band is always hot to trot and they're mod with a touch of goth.
Bad news kids, I'm the biggest Cars fan ever, but ...This audio is from "The Cars live at the summit in houston 1984-1985" It is a documented 100% fact...compare....
This video is the Us Festival. 1982. If it's not that concert's audio then someone did one helluva job in getting some other audio track synched up with this video footage.
The Cars always played their music the exact same way. Note for note, except for some of the non-hit early stuff, and EE's solos. Yeah, the guys who did The Cars Unlocked DVD are professionals and they did do one helluva job matching the audio. The clip is from Unlocked. The audio is from the Houston show...again...compare it....
shame can only find 3 tracks from the US festival pro-shot. who has the rest? please upload as there is only an audience audio of the complete show out there
I'm very happy that people love this song. I didn't invent it but it was just what I needed back in '77 or so. Let the stories be told. We did it back then and we'll do it again. The illusion might be real. My political opinion is that '80 we got stuck with Reagan who was a hateful drooling retired movie monkey. I sure voted for Carter that time. Ike warned against the military industrial complex and McCain warns against a Fascist regime that wants to stifle the media. Let's get some freedom around here in the u.s. I love most of my local Mexicans. The new government in dc wants to put this all back into the dark stone ages. Princess Leia has bitten the dust, and her mom. Harrison Ford sends condolences. The photos are bold. Up in the air. Show what they do. We got memories. We're vaudeville, we got soul like that. Let 'em show what they want.
I was there... Cars sound great here in this video (and on "tape"--pre-cd's) , but they were definitely not one of the better live bands, IMHO. They were not known for putting on good concerts at the time. Technically, great music but no stage presence...they were pretty stiff and did not relate to the audience well the way other bands did.
I just saw a documentary on the Us Festival on AXS. On the footage of the Cars playing "Bye Bye Love" the drummer sounded terrible. Super stiff and ham fisted. I didn't realize he was not a great drummer till I saw that footage. Think about it: On the studio version of "My Best Friend's Girl" there's a missed snare beat where he hits the rim (which was never fixed), and the whole "Heartbeat City" album was drum machines programmed by David; apparently no live playing at all. Listen to the Us Festival audio of "Bye Bye Love" on UA-cam and see what I mean. He's passable for a professional, but what I heard on BBL was not what you'd expect from a band at their level of success.
jason kellner I listened to the us bbl, David's time keeping is spot on...I don't know what you're looking for ...as far as bfg, that was the producers error, not David's. No drummer records without a few "miss-hits"...the difference is, then they didn't have the technology to fix it in post production like they do now. As far as HBC being sequenced, find me an artist Mutt Lang didn't use a fairlight for the drums on, after 83 when that tech became available....Pyromania...all sequenced...before HBC...The Cars were honest enough to not try and BS anyone about the fact that the producer insisted on a computer to play the drums.
Wannabes who are nobodies can pick and snit over anything. Its a form of mental illness written out for us to see. A great drummer and Ric and EE,Ben and Greg would never tolerate anything that wasn't any good.He just needs to shut his picklesucker and live his life.David Robinson has.
No stadge to big for the cars!!!

The Cars kick ass here! Great live performance!
Beautiful voices, and love that raunchy guitar sound!
