Probably one of the top 10 greatest rock songs of all time? Still holds up in 2024?
Oui j'adore 🌹🇫🇷
Of course it holds up!, master pieces like this song are eternal!
Definitely
Definitely, I remember when they opened for my favorite band Kiss in 78 and early 79!!!
Yes!!!!! I just realised today so sorry
Amazing that the original masters of the concert were lost for over thirty years. It is practically a miracle that we can see this in UA-cam today. They were found in a vault in NYC in around 2007. I was hired to resotore and color correct the entire concert for the band's DVD set. I'm proud to be part of the concert's legacy. I grew up with this album, so it was doubly cool. Fun to realize that no one had seen this footage from 1978 until 2008. Seems it was there, but nope. It was gone. We're "all all right" now!!
Good onya mate, great job. It's great to see it again. I saw it on the tely as a young fella, and I also had the album. :)
i’m Ok with CERN, if we go back to these days...
thank you!
Many bands should colorize...seen a 75 skynyrd one recently
Congrats man that sounds like a dream to do. And that is amazing, I get sad thinking about some concerts of bands that will never exist again, iconic performances, pictures, all the stuff I was privileged to be a part of, and it's just gone forever with zero trace but a memory
Happy birthday to my oldest son. You probably won't see this comment, but this was the lullaby I'd sing for you and your brother. I didn't know kid's lullabies, so you both fell asleep to daddy singing classic rock. I love you my sons, counting the days till I see you again.
God bless you James 😊🙏🏼🎸🎸🎸
😭😭😭😭💞💞💞💞💞
Thats okay..I used to sing "Rock you like a Hurricane" to my kids after I picked them up from daycare ha ha!
You made me tear up :D
I got a 5 month old and googled this cause I kept having this song pop in my head.
I guess I know now what's waiting for me down the line.
Lessons from life.....never fall in love with someone who doesn't love this song. It's never going to work.
That's good advice worth remembering. I love this song. (Just saying). ✌️
There was a commercial back in the 90s where one girl was telling another girl about the perfect guy she just met. And she proceeds to list off his qualities, like "he's nice to his mother." And the final one was "and he knows all the words to the greatest song ever recorded." and the commercial fades off playing "I want you to want me."
who misses Bun E Carlos besides me? Great drummer and character in the Cheap Trick band.
Nobody plays like him. He rushes and propels the rhythm and that is awesome.
Bet he’s gotta smoke in his mouth! Dude rules!!!!!
Since he left I wonder who they got to do their accounting?
The Foundation of the band..like Keith and Who. Who?
This album was just added to National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress
Niels Nielsen wow, that’s a stat! A well-deserved stat.
Awesome, pure classic American band
Holy smokes! It's a special album but I didn't think it would achieve such feat. Way to go Cheap Trick!
One of my favorite albums!
One of the best live albums out there, well deserved.
Probably one of the top 10 greatest rock songs of all time.
Absolutely right
This song is in the top 500 songs of all time.
Good song but don't be ridiculous
R u kidding me?
Just calm the fuck down with your idiocy
Won this album on a radio station. Was 14 and rode bus to station in baltimore to get it. Played it till the groves were gone
Bad ass 🎉
That's cool and funny because I'm from Baltimore
..Best story, my man.
One of the greatest songs ever written and recorded. Anthem of a generation.
mom and dad rolling numbers got my kiss records out. Cool lyrics
SEEMS LIKE THE 70s have most of the great songs , HERES PROOF
Damone and fast times ridegemont high
Um no. Not even in the running,
I didn’t get them until “Next Position Please” who else misses Bun E. Carlos?
Im 57.proud to grow up in the best generation of Rock music... From 60s thru Mtv 80"s!!
And 90’s
Singer's alright, bass player's alright, drummer's alright, guitarist just seems a little weird :D
Love cheap trick
Ya but he got skills, close your eyes, listen.
dude plays alittle guitar though. Can't he? He pretty much makes their sound.
The drummer looks like an accountant who plays drums when he isn't doing my taxes.
Singer’s exceptional. Also great job harmonizing on the chorus by the band.
Rick was on some serious head tripping shaaat when he was on stage. However, the guitar playing was phenom level
no auto-tuning just pure gold old talent
I know!!
Well...it was 'enhanced" in the studio..all live albums do that..KISS ALIVE! is a studio album..only think "live" is the crowd noise on a loop and Peter's drums.
they used autotune back then, they just called it guitar frets
It does sound pitch-corrected, in fact.
Definitely a second rhythm guitar in this mix too.
This song makes me so nostalgic I could cry.
Me too. Seems like yesterday it came out. Was an awesome time in my life.
I think I was around 10 when this came out. Great memories of a simpler time.
1978 when Heaven Tonight and Budokan came out I was junior year high school the dream police in 1979. I saw them in concert in 1982 at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara, CA they rocked it was awesome but they were so fucking loud my ears were ringing for days. One of the loudest concerts I have ever been to.
Fook Yes
ive known her all these yrs
Rick Nielsen's presence and theatricals are simply amazing. Throwing picks and making faces jumping around and running back for his back up vocals.
He created an attractive, harmless but crazy character. What a band, this is what rock sounds like.
Absolutely right
I find it hard to watch just because of him. I realize he was having fun, but he seems like a jack*ss.
Spot on!
True
Yeah....its really great, I think my appreciation only grows
I remember back in the 70's when I first heard Cheap Trick and thought to myself how weirdly different they sounded but here we are in 2024 and they still rock.
Yup/good lasts.. Great comment.
Can anybody deny that Bun was an absolute badass on drums!
I saw Cheap Trick at Selina's in Coogee Bay, some fool threw something at Bun, he jumped of his kit and was going to kill him. Security saved him (or not).
Hands down the best drummer who looked like a 70s private detective.
@@spankynater4242 best drummer who looked like an accountant...
My lifelong memory of Cheap Trick was at the Tx jam around 1980. They had the entire Cotton Bowl chanting ''WE'RE ALL ALRIGHT!'' near the end of this song . They stopped playing their instruments except for Bunnie. It went on and on , the crowd didnt want to stop!! 100,ooo people chanting. A truly magical moment.
I was there too. I've seen Cheap Trick probably about 5x's never disappoint. They Rock and I thank them for their wonderful kick ass music along w/memories toboot.
Supadupa!!
Still listening to this beautiful piece of music in London Ontario Canada 2024
Good on you, Bob.
A timeless classic; it's a special song for me. 1993 was the worst year of my life: in the space of 3 weeks I lost my mother to cancer and my long-term girlfriend dumped me. I think this song was re-released in the summer of that year, it was always on the radio in Boise, ID, where I was living at the time. It helped me through SO many dark, dark days...May God bless you, Cheap Trick, you'll never know how much good your music does for so many people.
Wofsz😊fyg9x3
@@chrisduerden2084 hahahahaha...Why don't you grow up??
Life is a hard one, my man.
Sorry to hear about your mother.
As for your girlfriend, don't lose sleep over that . Go find another!
@@cristianhcm1914 Thanks for your nice comment, it WAS a tough year, but things have long been better. The best of luck to you too, my friend...
Zander never fails to impress. He is a freak of nature with that voice of his, STILL hitting all the notes today. Simply amazing. UPDATE: Saw Trick again in July, i was anxious thinking no way could Robin sound as good last time I saw them, WRONG! He killed it, I was just floored. I took my 16 year old daughter and she was like "Wow! that guy has an amazing voice!"
Frick yeah Todd
The voice was great, but he body seems like it is just going through the motions and can't wait to go to sleep.
I've listened to this version probably close to 100 times, but I've never seen it and I wish that he were feeling is even a third as much as Rick.
@@chancemiller9340 He's almost 70 man, and he's still doing it. I've seen them around 20 times over the last 30 years and Robin has never been much of a mover anyway, he just face melts with that voice
@@chancemiller9340 you're right he doesn't seem to be as animated and he also doesn't talk to the crowd much at all every time I see them in concert. My Singer and I were talking about it. We couldn't figure out if he's just conserving his voice? Maybe he isn't as outgoing as the lead guitar player? They are so unique.. kick ass rock band!! They are a little different and I think that's why so many people love them
Taliban Go To Hell 2021 A.D.
Robin Zander is one of the Best Rock n Roll vocalist of all time. He is so overlooked by people. This guy can sing.
Easily a Top 10 Frontman
And he didn't strain himself to do it
I disagree big time. He's not a bad singer at all, but he's alright. Pun intended. Most of their songs are sung in a pretty mid ranged pitch and there's not much deviation from it either. He's not even on the lost of top 100 vocalists. He's average at best.
Favorite lyric at 3:51
"Bun's alright, Tommy's alright, Robin's alright, Rick's alright!"
Surrender, Surrender, and DO give yourself away, awaaaay!!!!
We're all, alright, we're all, alright!
My first concert 1978 Veterans Memorial colosseum Phoenix State Fair. I was 14 😀
40+ years and I never knew those lyrics were in the song! Always wondered what Rick was pointing at in the old video.
From Rochford, Ill 1973 and still touring more than 50 years later; currently in Australia 2024.
I was born 25 years late.. would have loved to been a teen at this.
Bring it back from the past to folks here now; we need it. Stuff happens when it should..no worries. Keep on.
My very late introduction to this song came in June of 2009.
That's when _The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien_ premiered. The cold opening for the entire show was Conan at his best. In the sketch, Conan had supposedly made all the preparations to start his new show, except for the minor detail of moving himself from New York to Los Angeles. He couldn't get a ride, so he took off running...across the country.
The producers chose this song in the background as a message to Conan's longtime fans like me. He wasn't going to change who he was just because he got an earlier timeslot.
Unfortunately, NBC executives set him up to fail. They didn't want to lose Jay Leno, who maintained his #1 ratings until Conan took over. With fewer people watching live television in general, NBC decided the best thing to do was save money on primetime programming by giving Jay a 10 pm show. As expensive as Jay's contract was, talk shows are still much cheaper to produce than scripted dramas. Even though NBC knew they were going to take a hit in ratings, they figured the cost savings were worth it.
What they didn't count on was a revolt from their affiliates. If fewer people watched NBC at 10 p.m., fewer people also watched NBC affiliates for their 11 p.m. news as well as Conan's show at 11:35 p.m.
Also, with Leno at 10 p.m., he got the best guests for NBC, which was a problem Conan was trying to address by moving from 12:35 a.m. to 11:35 p.m. He just didn't count on Leno still being a step ahead of him by moving to 10 p.m. So, just like before, Conan still got second-rate guests even though his show was airing an hour earlier than before.
NBC's failed programming experiment could have been corrected if they had the courage to let Leno go, but instead, they proposed pushing Jay to 11:35 for 30 minutes and Conan back to 12:05.
Meanwhile, back in New York, Jimmy Fallon had replaced Conan on _Late Night_ in the 12:35 slot, and this schedule change would have meant pushing his show back to 1:05.
Conan wasn't having it, and he forced NBC to decide between him and Jay. NBC chose Jay, and that meant they had to pay Conan about $40 million to go away.
After his exit from NBC, Conan hit the road with theater shows since he was "Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television." After his non-compete period ended, Conan started a show on the basic cable network TBS, and his 11 p.m. show simply called _Conan_ lasted for 11 years.
Conan stayed true to himself throughout the madness. He never did surrender.
..That story did justice to the thing, and yourself. Much appreciated.
Wish I could live my entire life aged 29 and stayed in 1978 forever!
My first rock concert experience was cheap trick at the Budokan!
All things must pass, but good old those years ago! 🙌🙌🙌🎸🍾💪🥁🥁😃👊
how old were you?
WOW.... I'm not sure it gets any better than that.
I was there in 1979 for Van Halen.
シカゴのImは、あなたが覚えていることを聞くのが大好きです。
It's cool that 48,000 can say that.
Better than the studio version
I’m 52 years old I remember when my older sister bought this album when it was first released in 1979? Remember the whole summer we blasted this out of our open house window!! Great memories!
Bun E. Carlos is just steady as a rock, damn. Not once is he rushing.
“Surrender, surrender, but don’t give yourself away” ... this line seems to fit mysteriously well in Japanese postwar protest culture
😮😮😮😮
Drummer looks like a science teacher. guitarist looks like a plummer. What a band!
Actually, Bun looks like a 70s private detective.
@@spankynater4242 that works too yah
Bun look like an accountant which makes the whole experience even better!
Bunch of us in the break room at work 1 day, discussing just how deep into insanity our jobs were driving us. I couldn't HELP but start singing "Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright...", & EVERYONE joined in on "They just seem a little weird! Surrender! Surrender!". Quite a cathartic moment, I must say. Thank you, Cheep Trick, for supplying an anthem for those of us who jitter through our days with frazzled nerves & caffeine!
I say to so many people I love Cheap Trick, and they say "never heard of them". Criminally underrated here in the UK. I listened to the albums Live At The Budokan and Dream Police relentlessly in my mid to late teens. Outstanding band.
Then it's your job to teach! Good man.
As a die hard Kiss fan, they are both great, and mind you Kiss had these guys open for them for a year and a half!!! Why do you think they said my Kiss records out? Lol
Love both bands!!!!
Yes, man.
When I think of Cheap Trick Robin Zander mostly just standing there singing, Rick Nielson jumping all over the place, and Bun E. Carlos on the drums with a cigarette in his mouth. Love these guys!
Zander intentionally played it low key even stepping back to give the spotlight to his mates banging away.
Tom definitely nails it too.
Don't forget about the bass player Tom Peterson. Great guitarist and created the prototype for a 12 string bass.
@@Badrockstar84 Yes Tom Peterson. Always a strong backbone for Cheap Trick
I THINK OF HOME!!! Rockford Illinois Truly Rocks!

Cheap Trick is a fantastic band. Surrender is such a brilliant song. Cheap Trick forever!
THIS was in early 1978 Alot of people say the late 70s were disco LOL Ya right
As a 67 year old woman who listened to Carpenters, I loved this song and still do!!
You have your stripes. Good woman.

Agreed, can't believe it took Kiss and them that long?
They can Rock great. Saw them in San Jose ,they opened for Aerosmith. But they rocked out great. Hope they are still rockn out there!!! Keep it alive!!!!
-" underrated " is so overused ... !-
Couldn't agree more!! SO underrated!!
I was a teenage kid in the 70s and 80s. And this song really helped me to cope. This song was pretty cool. This is the first time that I have seen the band sing this particular song and it is just awesome.

Nobody more than 20 miles outside Budokan had heard of the place until this album.
Kilometers, not miles! But you are sure right!
The title graphic / chyron displays the Japanese katakana alphabet, which is used to spell out foreign words phonetically. It literally says "Su re n da a."

Ironic, but if it weren't for these concerts they might not have been so big here in the states, thank you Japan.
Thank you Japan for bringing these guys into the limelight!
The acoustics of this album capture the live concert hall so perfectly!
Incredible live - mix , i think no studio overdubs unlike for instance talking heads stop making sense
This is one of the best live albums of all times and produced so well. It was also my first album that I bought on my own.
The sheer nostalgia and pure energy of this band live back them moves me nearly to tears. Their youth was not wasted on the young
Yes.
There have been some legendary live concert albums from the 70a - Budokan, Frampton Comes Alive, KISS Alive, Hot August Night .... and many more. When Cheap Trick eventually released the full version of Budokan on 2 cds I snapped it up immediately
Don't forget Deep Purple Live In Japan too. I bought the double vinyl record in the 1970s.
One of the best songs EVER writen
I totally agree. I had the pleasure of seeing Cheap Trick quite a few years ago. I was about 21 or 22 years old. Saw rhem at a place called Selland Arena in Fresno, Ca. Don't remember the year(too much party)but they came with Eddie Money and Electric Light Orchestra. Was a killer concert. Was the only concert I ever got to go to with my wife who passed away at the age of 25 just a couple of years later, so this is a very precious memory for me. Now here I am 66 years old and I'm still listening to this. Good rock just never gets old or dies.
So...my father-in- law used to tell a story. His family had moved to Rockford, Il. He was older and stayed in Joliet, Il with his wife. Not much later his brothers and sisters started telling him they needed to come to Rockford to see this great "bar band". Called Cheap Trick. Ron just passed a few months ago, he swore by those bar shows, best he ever saw till the end. God bless you buddy.
MY BFF just passed away and Cheap Trick was her Favorite Band. We went to the Washington Concert 5 yrs ago. They Are the Best New Wave Band EVER. RIP: Kim

I love how Rick does an impression of Gene Simmons after the “got my Kiss records out” line..
Isn't it "my kids' records"?
@R Diaz Are you sure? It sounds like "kids"
Yeah sure mate and the JImi Hendrix lyrics are " Scuse me while I kiss this guy " not
" Scuse me while I kiss the sky "
The Go Go's lyrics are " Alex the Seal " not " Our Lips are Sealed "
Mis -heard lyrics are called Monde Greens after Lady Monde Green.
It's also a segment on Australian quiz show " Spicks n Specks "
i much prefer the lyrics I've been singing to The B-52s debut album for the last 41 years even though they are wrong. LOL!!!!!!!
Alan, also don't forget. "Rob the snack bar" by the Clash. And the timeless one, by the Knack. " My Scrotum"

He keeps amazing time, not speeding up in the snare rolls the least bit.
Sad that he no longer plays with them.

Speed tabs were everywhere then in Japan. Still are. Lol plus yeah. Hes looking more Tweaked out then Coked out in my expert opinion lmao
That's kinda how he is NORMALLY, or at least was. He's slowing down a bit now, only puts in five miles of running during a concert instead of 20 that sort of thing.
I bought this record when it came out in the record stores. Had no idea who Cheap Trick was at the time. The FM radio stations were playing the songs and so everyone started to buy the album. The band just exploded after that. Great band, great album, great times.
The very first live band I ever saw. Age 14, summer '78 (yeah, that makes me 60) they were the starting band for Ted Nugent. I never heard of Cheap Trick before I saw them live. They were about to get well known real fast after that summer.
