I'm actually using this same MacBook Pro right now! Been doing so for about 2 years and while I've had some issues with heat dissipation, this thing has saved my butt when it comes to needing a proper computer for college, especially since I upgraded it to have 16GB of RAM and replaced the battery and SSD. Still need to replace the thermal paste but this thing has been a very wonderful laptop and I'm planning on keeping it until it cannot function anymore.

I have this exact model. Was getting sluggish over time. Did almost the same, but put 16gb of ram and the dvd was replaced by enclosure with the old drive I use as a in-computer Time Machine. It’s amazing. The SSD actually proved that the biggest bottleneck on this computer was the HDD. It now runs blazingly fast - as long as it’s basic laptop things. I wouldn’t game or edit videos on this thing. But it’s great, and greater than any 8 year old laptop I’ve seen lately.

I might have said this before, but my 2011 13" i7 MBP has been my main machine recently. I bought it new, fully loaded and it was a workhorse until I updated to a 2017 function keys donglebook. I wanted to set up a semi-permanent zoom teaching station at my desk, so I put an SSD in it and run an external monitor. Now I do most of my browsing and streaming this way from my comfy office chair. The camera is better on my donglebook in low light, but this is plenty good enough for teaching. The second monitor allows me to have a lesson in nearpod or powerpoint on one screen and a chat window open on the other. The built-in ethernet port is a huge plus. The only real negative was the old bluetooth standard but that was fixed with a cheap dongle. It's one of those things where people trying to deal with the pandemic who have two jobs, two kids and two computers, if they know someone who can offer one of these machines cheap, it's a real good option. I cleaned up and put an SSD in a 2011 13" i5 for a friend's daughter and it's been fantastic.

I bought a mid 2012 15" with the matte screen. It's been upgraded to 16gb ram and two 1tb SSDs. Its lived a very hard life on a laptop stand in the cab of several tractor trailers getting hammered by the sun and harsh vibrations. Till this day its still on the same laptop stand and moved from semi truck to my FJ Cruiser streaming 3 cameras on OBS on road and off.
I've tested some windows laptops and new MacBooks to replace my lovely work horse but I still have a hard time trying to replace it. From crappy butterfly keyboards on newer MacBooks to flimsy and ugly designed windows machines. I'll check out the new 16/14" MacBooks as they gained some girth and look promising.

  • @Piquliar

I have an old HP ProBook 4440s, years ago, when I got it it had a dual core Pentium clocked at 2.3 Ghz and 2Gbs of ram. That was the first laptop that I truly upgraded: got a core i5 3210m (same as in this old macbook), 8Gbs of ram and a 500Gb Samsung SSD. That thing was quick AF but sadly the mobo's got some issues. I'll fix it when I have the inclination one of these days since I've got other laptops but the nostalgia of upgrading the CPU and stuff in a laptop is nice when so many laptops are barely upgradable these days.

It's amazing how viable old Mac hardware still is with newer Mac OS builds. I finagled Catalina onto a 2011 i5/4GB RAM Macbook air, and it still runs much better than a nine year old laptop has any expectation to. The OS and basic applications/web browsing are just as snappy as on a new machine.

This is the model that I have i5 and everything, I bought it new. Upgraded it to 16gb ram with an SSD in 2015. Still gives some of the newer Mac Books a run for their money. The new M1s are awesome, but I wish they were built like a tank like this mid 2012 is.

I got one of these for free from where I work as it was decommissioned, but it seemed that something was wrong with the original logic board. After getting a replacement (albeit not the i7 that was in there already) it came back to life. The replacement board doesn't have the connection for the keyboard backlight, but that is a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the price of the board and a magsafe charger. You can patch it to run MacOS Monterey and it is still surprisingly usable with 8GBs of RAM and a SSD in comparison to my main windows PC and M1 iPad.

Someone on MacRumors sells speedy and modern WiFi + BT upgrade cards for these MacBooks, pair it with the OpenCore Legacy macOS Big Sur patch on a fast SSD paired with some RAM, it’s pretty neat. Battery upgrades aren’t so expletives either and if you want, you could probably undervolt the CPU and IGPU to squeeze more performance and battery life!

I wish I had the 2012 model. I got the late 2011 in early 2012 and a few months later they update it with usb 3, better cpu and ddr4 ram. All these things are a must 10 years down the road. Mine is showing it's age and it's well worn.

I just got the latest M1 MacBook Pro. My last one was the one in the video which I upgraded in the meantime but I was just curious about the new M1 chip. But yes, the old upgraded one (16GB RAM - was cheaper than 8GB for some reason) still got the job done properly. Plus it was the last MacBook with a glowing Apple symbol on it when it was switched on as far as I know. ☺️

You should try Liquid metal thermal paste on mac books. I'd be interested what the thermals will look like. I've seen up to 20°C difference on windows laptops even compared to MX-4 (which is also my preferred paste). But make sure that you use very few and give anything around it an isolative coating (acrylic conformal coating or nail polish is suitable for that).
AND only use it on Copper or nickel plated copper, as it will corrode the crap out of aluminium. It will leave some marks on normal copper but that doesn't worsen it's thermal conductivity and so also not the thermals (Will look like it dried up). If you're worried that it dried up too much just add an extra layer and if the copper surface is saturated it won't dry up any more.

quick note: catalina is loosing support September this year. it would still work fine for most things but just make sure you install all the apps you need to use. (such as adobe CC for example, currently supports catalina, but is probably losing support the same time apple drops support. make sure you have the latest version installed because you won't be able to install newer versions once support drops. it won't even let you install older versions which technically work even though adobe does let you install old versions of their software) that goes for pretty much every app which supports a minimum of 10.15
