  • As many of you know, we are headed to Mexico in our self converted Sprinter Van... driving all the way from Toronto to as far south as we can make it in two months. Best part? We're creating a convoy with our van life besties Christian and Aubry aka THE MINIMAL MILLENNIALS. So, our first stop is going to be Austin, Texas where our buddies are based.
►► CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE + join our van life adventures all the way to Mexico: bit.ly/2DDSUgu
In today's vlog, we share a little bit about how we plan on living in a van through the States, Mexico and Central America. As we begin our journey, we need to cross the Canada/US border and have a wee hiccup while there. I guess living an alternative lifestyle raises questions for the border patrol... fair enough?! We ARE (after all) a couple of hustlers who work and live full time in a van and make UA-cam videos about it. Will we successfully make it to the USA? You'll have to watch to find out.

We upload new videos 2x a week -- WEDNESDAYS + SUNDAYS.
Our goal here is to inspire you to chase after your own dreams however big (or small... tiny homes anyone?) they may be! We hope to create a community of like-minded, positive individuals who will grow to love and support one another on their own journeys.

no kidding, Jim. Their first time driving to the States? Should be a high school course. Plus gas codes using a card; you quickly learn which stations don't require postal codes. But if you need to...say your postal code is M2N 7E9 then the code at the pump would be 27900...just add two zeros to the numbers in a Canadian code.

@@Tarah17, for real though ! I learned this the hard way going to Canada too. I guess at the time I went there they had problems with backpackers illegally working and such, and I made the mistake to say the word "work"...I was simply visiting friends I made during an exchange student year, and I was indeed going to help them build their tiny house but man did I make a mistake haha, I should've just said : "I'm coming to sight see !" (I guess it didn't really help that I was traveling to Whitehorse, Yukon, which isn't really...a touristy place haha). Anyway. Borders man. I actually had less trouble to go to the States than for Canada (then again, it was my stupid mistake to talk too much, and probably fall on a border patrol agent that wasn't as nice as others...they called my dad all the way to France to ask him if I was going to work or no haha).

I am so sorry I didn't learn you were going to be in the states sooner! You can get a credit/debit card with a bank like Charles Schwab. It works without international fees so you can use it in any country in Central America, no worries. I would have helped you set one up (with a zip code) so you could use it for your gas purchases while you are in the states. So sorry! Enjoy your trip anyway and good luck!

Boarder checks are the worst :/ Next time just answer their questions and don't make conversation, it makes it worse. America is a big proponent of small businesses but we have laws about foreigners making money in the States because if too much of our money leaves the States then it causes inflation which will lead to a depression in the economy. I'm so sorry you had a bad experience! Hopefully it will be better next time! :D Also, h3h3 is pretty great and Stuff You Should Know can be good.

Ok had to pause at 7:31, this entire time and IDK why I thought this was you getting into the Mexico border...nope of course not, its crappy us, the U.S. I have had so many good experiences crossing borders as an American, always so easy. We do not make it easy or comfortable to come here, apparently even from Canada. I've had Morccan friends turned away, German friends questioned. I felt so odd in Australia when I boarded a domestic flight and they didn't even check my ID. Lovely video, I'm sure more comments to come!

Podcast recommendation: Terrible, Thanks for Asking (!!!). It will pull at your heartstrings, and the host is amazing and hilarious despite the intense content. Start from the beginning.

Joe Rogan Experience(mixed bag of comedy MMA and intellectual speakers), Your Moms House(a comedy couple with inside jokes and video dissecting), Duncan Trussel Family Hour(a comedian with Buddhist topics and alternative living) , This Passed Weekend by Theo Von(takes phone call recording and gives advice, also a comedian he's ridiculously funny), and My American Life(also on NPR every Sunday morning in the states). First four listed are American comedians who do different styles of podcasts all very funny and stimulating. Last one is for Bec it is all about stories of people in the day to day life in America with lots of random or deep messages hidden throughout.

Hey! If y’all are driving through Nashville, Dallas, Houston, Austin, Ft. Worth, or San Antonio, there’s a restaurant called Hopdoddy Burger Bar that has the Impossible Burger. It’s the same concept as the Beyond Burger, but is way better in my opinion. Check it out if you’re feelin’ it 🙏✨

Ok, so I know you posted this awhile ago but I wanted to say, you 2 and your rad grapefruits are always welcome in the states. Lol and I'm glad the border peeps didn't rough you up too bad. Things are just batshit crazy here right now. Ugh. Anyway, I would TOTALLY dig it if you guys did more videos like this when you're feeling up to it. I'm sure it would be crazy annoying if you felt like you had to do it every day. For me, I'm a nature addict and I love to backpack and hike. I'm a wilderness survivalist and all that fun stuff but since December of last year to now and probably for the next few months I've been pretty sick and health is just escaping me (my mom was also just diagnosed with cancer so I want to stick around for her) so watching you guys provides and escape for me and keeps me in a better headspace since I'm stuck in my room unable to work right now so, thanks for sharing of yourselves. I'm always stoked about new vids from you guys and the gnarly good vibes I get watching.
Also, I'm so sorry you guys don't have access to some of good vegan options up there in our neighbor country of Canada. I grew up and still live in California (moving soon to Idaho and right at the border so I'm stoked about visiting you awesome Canadians) and we have a BUTT tonne of vegetarian/vegan options. You can't turn a corner in most of Cali without finding something amazing to eat. I was raised vegetarian and I've been vegan for little bursts of time and it's so easy to do here! (if you're ever in SoCal look up Veggie Grill. You will not be disappointed. Their fried breaded cauliflower is fucking amazing! As well as other things on the menu)
I hope you were able to find a Trader Joe's. It really is an awesome experience. Sooo much goodness! Yum!
Look me up on Insta RisskeeBusiness or the same on FB Risskee Business. I haven't been able to post much since I've been so sick because I haven't been on any adventures in over a year but hopefully soon I'll get back to it.
Much love to you quirky kids! ❤️
    Riss 😎🤙

Hey Friends. A cool podcast to listen to is “Extreme Ownership”
This is actually a book , You can get it on audible.com as an audiobook, and it was written by two Retired Navy SEALs. As a small business owners who potentially will grow into a big company, you’ll be ahead of the game, with the knowledge you will gain from This book. Lots of love♥️

The chats were great and would love to see more of that :) as for podcasts, I'm also a huge fan of Views by David Dobrik. You guys should check out Ted talks daily, they have some good thinking posts that last anywhere form 5 mins to an hour. Another cool one is Death, Sex and Money (not as bad as it sounds) where super charismtic people talk about the "taboo". Enjoy the trip, drive safe!

I like your channel. But be careful! Recording a conversation with a public official is a felony in Illinois when a party is unaware they are being recorded. Illinois law is extreme. I'm not certain about where you crossed. But laws in the USA vary widely between states. Just be careful. BTW, the original IL law was already found by the IL Supreme Court to be unconstitutional. But legislators came up with a different "flavor" of the same law in order to circumvent the ruling.

Forgive any repetition but at the border don't lie by statement or omission! Be a good Canuck! I've have been personally told by us customs that Canadian travellers are the best. Honest, happy straight forward! However the rule is answer the question asked then shut up. Not the time to chat! As you learned. Surprised because didn't smack you! Looked like she was ready. I and my super travelling family have too many stories of misconstrued info that results from joking, chatting etc. Be serious and Canadian! You have learned I hope!!!!travel safe. All the best! And please take this info as it is meant to be of help.

Now you know how us USA people feel when we want to go into Canada. In 2011 all I wanted to do was see the better side of Niagra Falls. I swear trying to get into Canada I felt like the guy treated me like I was some sketchy person. Lol I have to laugh because I was in a nice Mazda suv, I was dressed nice and I totally DO NOT look sketchy. So these boarder people are just doing their jobs at making both countries safe.

Did you ever think about adding a hydrogen fuel cell to your Mercecedes Benz van... hydrogen and diesel really go together as far as doubling your mileage. Also cleaning your engine out when you drive and keeping your oil clean... I make these ONLY for MYSELF as a hobby.... if you would like more information as to where you could get one, email me and I can tell you... It's the wave of the future in the present.. Also love your van tripping around.. I did my world tour many years ago... got married and settled down... As far as vegan... NO... but we add more fruits and veggies now adays... "peace out and stay safe".. will keep you on the channel... you two are a trip..

I lived in mexico for a year. Its an incredible country. If you can visit Taxco- beautiful colonial city where the buildings are all white and the taxis are all old white volkswagon beetles. Guanajuato is another colonial city, it feels very european and romantic, lots of cobblestones. And you can see real mummies there. Try to catch the lucha libre in mexico city, and the Patrick Miller nightclub is really fun, filled with middle aged mexicans dancing their hearts out to disco music.
    Enjoy!!!

Chatting's cool, but I think more focused conversations work better. For me, you’re telling a story about your lives, but stories become less effective (ie less watched) if they are rambling, lacking focus, have long silences, participants look bored, etc. Like the border patrol story and interactions about it between you two were really interesting, but about the time you asked for podcast recs, I fast forwarded until the story about fake burgers. (And I say this as as someone who likes you both, has seen every video since the van build started, and has been a professional writer.) Things like tighter editing to remove lags, picking a topic ahead of time and cutting what doesn’t work can benefit you when you shoot a lot of footage. Best wishes for your trip and have tons of fun! Jenny
