Here's a few tips from someone who lives in Wisconsin: 1. Throw your hazards on in that kind of weather so the person behind you can see you and know something is up. 2. SLOW DOWN!!! Slow way way down. Like a crawling speed. 3. Use the driver ahead of you as a guide to know where the road is. 4. If you are tall enough and it's safe enough, open up your window and slap your windshield wiper against the windshield. That will help to get some of the ice off. 5. In crappy weather like that, always have bags of kitty litter with you. If you ever get stuck in the snow the kitty litter is great traction and it weighs down your vehicle. 6. Pile ups are a real concern when driving in that bad of weather. If possible, turn down the radio and keep the windows open so you can hear for screeching tires or cars crashing. It'll give you a little bit of time to take action instead of having a pileup sneak up on you. Stay safe and safe travels! If you are traveling in the midwest currently, just know we usually get that one NASTY snow storm in April. After that one ugly snow storm, than it's officially spring.
Karen, as a Michigan girl, who has been driving 60 plus years, I back you up. If the driving is bad, it can get much worse real fast. Slow down. Put on hazards. You never know what the next patch of highway will be in icy, snowy wintry weather. Hard to tell what his speed was, but they seemed to be clipping along pretty good.
We just got several inches of snow today. Roads were good though. We have seen snow in July too. Just always be prepared, go slow if in doubt, and ask for help if needed.
It seems he threw his time frame (schedule out the window 13hrs of driving) as soon as the shit hit the fan. Good on him stopping. I bet next time he'll stop sooner.

He did amazing. I lived in alaska for 18 years, and can drive stuff like this "easily". Everyone else where we live now freak me out when I'm out during snow and ice as it's not a steady winter thing.
That reminds me so much of our crash in snow when I was 9 months pregnant. My husband just remained really calm and said ‘I can’t brake’ and we just slid down a hill and braced for the crash. Thank goodness we managed to turn and have our stop braced by a large bush/tree. Still the scariest moment of my life. I really felt your emotions, Kara.
My mom was in a really bad car accident about 11 years ago. They were driving when a teen driver pulled out and struck them on the front of her driver’s side, while trying to cross a large road, sending them careening towards an electrical pole. My mom started to panic for a split second but then she said she saw a man standing in the road, and she was terrified of hitting him, (and also cursing at him for being so stupid and being in the middle of the road, lol), so she forced herself to regain what control she could of the vehicle, and somehow guided just beyond a power pole on the shoulder. At this point her steering wheel was messed up, and the front of the car was WRECKED., but she came to a stop along a field just beyond that power pole which police and EMT’s both joked about, saying things like “you made it really easy for the tow guys that’s for sure!” because it truly looked like she just pulled off on the shoulder of the road, mind you, the car was mechanically no longer functional as soon as the accident occurred. As for the man in the road, I won’t get into that here. We don’t know what it was. Was it a ghost, Jesus, a man no one on scene saw by coincidence, or perhaps a complete hallucination on my moms part. I don’t know. But it’s the thing that snapped her into focus and made her regain control because she was terrified of hitting this man. It only occurred to her after that.. why the hell would he be in the middle of a busy street with cars coming? He’d have gotten hit anyways honestly. And funny enough, apparently that’s a “thing”. EMT’s hear commonly people talk about seeing people when accidents occur in weird places. Maybe it’s some sort of mental phenomenon. Us hoping aid is around so bad that we imagine people are there? I dunno.
The cop was screened by the truck and didn't see them. They were already past the stop sign when the cops driver side came into view. Up Here in the rural west cops will only let you get away with blowing a stop sign if there is good visibility and the snow is so deep you could get stuck. Other wise they'll ticket you and tell you to get the hell off the road if you are to scared to drive and obey signs, cause you are a danger to everyone on the road. I drove kids on school bus to sports tournaments four hours away and left in worse condition than that. This is a time lapse of the first storm we got to open winter 2020 in the first 30 seconds of the time lapse is the conditions I saw in this video. Seriously folks! get some real tires and man up. I got studded winter grips on my vehicles. The evening of the storm I was working at my son's place then drove home. Morning after the storm in the time lapse I jumped in my truck. drove to the gas station and picked up diesel for my garage heater and gas for my snow blower. Wife jumped in with me and we also went grocery shopping. plow didn't come to clean the streets for days. This may sound harsh but people scared of driving weather and unequipped should not be on the road in weather. They endanger everyone else. Skipping that stop sign in bad visibility could cause an accident. Look how cool the cop didn't ticket? I'll put my life that if the cop had actually seen them skip that traffic sign he would not only have ticketed them he would have torn a strip off of them. possibly even added improper equipment if they were driving around on 150,000 k summer tires and maybe even dangerous driving to boot. I used to drive tow truck and was on emergency services. Day and night I was out there dealing with people that shouldn't have been out there. Some of them survived it. Serious question here! Van life and they never checked the weather???? If it sounds harsh then good! If someone would have been harsh before maybe these people would not have ended up over their heads.
The police can be very understanding during different weather conditions. My friend had an officer wave him on cause it was raining and he had someone driving up his ass. He couldn't stop safely at the red light and the officer understood cause the same thing was happening to him.
Another thing I noticed is how much you respect each other. When one is talking the other is quietly listening in the background and not interrupting. You're just the best couple on UA-cam ever.
We all need a Kara in an emergency situation. The support she was giving Nate to keep him calm in the moment just comes so natural to her. Glad you're both okay :)
You did it perfect. Slower is faster. I have lived in Wyoming my entire life. I got my CDL in 1982, and drove 18 wheelers over the road for the better part of 29 years. I still drive, more local now. That one mile on hour faster isn't worth a wreck. Good job.
@@loganlevy400 i'm also talking about in Canada driving up a massive mountain backwards covered in snow as every time he went forward we slipped down the mountain. My dad also drove in conditions for his kids where you could not see the road or ahead at all and had to use the gps to see where the road was supposed to be cause it was so covered in snow and he couldn't see ahead. That was the only time he ever said he was scared. But even in that he was calm as a cucumber in the moment just said it was intense driving later.
I've been driving in trash weather like this my entire life living on the Iowa/Minnesota border. I can't imagine how stressful this was for Nate. He did a great job. If you are not used to this type of weather conditions it can be extremely dangerous.

It's called "BLACK ICE" (you can't see it). I used to live in PA and this would happen a lot. I'll never forget just starting to drive and I did a 360 at a red light from it. SO SCARY! So glad you two are safe.
scary tricky ruthless stuff that black ice, a perfectly safe neighborhood can be suddenly terrorized by the appearance of black ice but even though the authorities tried to destroy it with the snow ploughs and salt trucks black ice perseveres
Absolutely not! Continue at steady throttle, don’t make a significant change to your steering inputs either. 1 plus million miles and 4 winters in Alaska has worked well for me;) And up to 9 tires chained up at times.
I swear - every time Kara cries I cry. As a Canadian I feel like we tend to laugh off those types of situations because we are raised driving in wild road conditions, but we often forget that if you don't learn to drive in the snow and ice and your vehicles aren't necessarily equipped for that weather, it can be really dangerous and super overwhelming. So glad you're both alright and made it safe and sound :) Now you'll have another adventurous story to share!
As a California native that moved to Colorado several times, and basically learned to drive in Co. …,I’ve learned the hard way that black top/snow free doesn’t mean safe. Black ice is a real thing and very tricky to navigate. You feeling like there was a magnet to the semi trucks that ran off the road would be you hit the same black ice they did. 😧🥶🫣

Guys! I’ve lived in western Canada my entire life. I’ve driven through my fair share of snow storms and every single time it’s terrifying as you count cars in the ditch and pray you don’t join them....or worse. Several times during winter the police issue warnings to stay off the road but with my job I don’t have the option to shelter in place. Driving in these storms as a novice or a pro is terrifying. Thankfully now it’s just a scary story you can add to the many stories of your travels. Stay safe and healthy guys!

Got caught in tooley fog on I5 in California at night and I 100% understand the trapped feeling. You cannot stop cause you're sure someone will hit you, you can't pull over because you can't see the shoulder, you can't do anything but continue to drive in that terrifying condition. It's an very weird kind of terror. You don't know when it will end.
That is the truth ! I did mobile security patrol many years ago in Utah, the company used 2010 Ford Mustangs as patrol cars... those cars are NOT good in the snow lol After driving all night I finally get home and unwind, it was an incredible feeling lol
I SO relate to this. I grew up in a very snowy environment and I definitely don't miss the feeling of driving in the snow or on ice. When they started to slide I literally had flashbacks to the time I slid into a ditch. Ooof! Luckily now the only snow we get disappears in a matter of hours.

Totally made sense to me. Its called being "Snow blind". The shades help you differentiate between all the white around you and where the hell the road just went.
@@charlotteblack7593 This... The Inuit people and other peoples that live in cold climates have types of shades to cut down the light from ice and snow to prevent snow blindness, the Inuit call them ilgaak... Just Google that for pictures.

i grew up in CA. didn't drive ice and snow country until my 30's in MN. in a 2wd, i figured out to down shift to slow the vehicle without using the brakes so much. have to be at 40 mph or less but it helps. if climbing, seesaw the wheel to grab traction. i also noticed, in snowpack, find the line of fresh snow and travel with one side of tires on that and the other on pack. it seems to help. wishing you safe travels.

For what it's worth, just wanted to say that your feelings are valid and that I'm sure that even the most experienced of drivers still experience fear every now and then. Watching this was like reliving our time driving our skoolie on unfamiliar old curvey mountain roads with a dog and a cat, a broken headlight and through the early darkness with no streetlights to be found. We made a video on it too - honestly thought we might not make it around a few curves. Glad you made it out unscathed!

Yes, it’s very scary to drive on icy 🥶 roads. You did the right thing by stopping. I slid off the road in Arkansas a few years ago. Fortunately, I landed it a big pile of fluffy white ❄️ snow. Stay safe!!!

As someone who has been to Yellowstone in the winter and the summer, I HIGHLY reccomebd skipping the warmer months. It's a totally different experience in winter because it's way less crowded. A much more magical experience.
Hey I'm a fellow North Dakotain! I also agree he did well. And Kara I almost had a wipe out in winter when driving by myself, the well of emotions is real.
North Dakota guy here. As soon as I saw those roads and the wind pushing the snow sideways and lowering visibility and knowing what you guys are driving, I got tense. I KNOW how dangerous the roads in the Dakotas get with the snow and the wind. Everyone up here has a winter survival kit in their car. Food, water, flares, survival blankets, candles, shovel, extra clothing, etc. Winter in the Dakotas is no joke. Things get serious real fast. You guys did great. Just take your time and drive slow and smooth.

@@KaraandNate my mom and I had to drive from Rehoboth Beach DE to Fairfield CA in November bc my grandparents passed away. This was 10 years ago. My son was a baby daughter was 8. They stayed with Pop and the babysitter. Not only did I have grief to deal with, not having my kids, my mom has never driven farther than an hour away (we dont really get along either) but she wanted to do the majority of the driving. NEBRASKA IN NOVEMBER IS THE WORST. 18 wheelers flippes over. 7° with the wind blowing so hard it was blowing thru the foundation and walls of the hotel. Yall did good. We would be on cleae interstate and then BLAM snow all over the road blowing straight across back to clear back to snow. I will never (ok ok ill try super hard) complain about tourists in the summer again! Glad yall were ok! That stuff is very scary.

Oh man. As a Wisconsinite, this activated my winter driving PTSD. It's brutal. Also, Yellowstone is crazy. I can't believe they let you walk on those boardwalks over boiling hot water like that.
@Stephanie, the boardwalks are safe and you don’t feel the heat. I’ve been there in the late summer and it is truly an amazing place to see. In order to really take it all in and enjoy, you have to spend a few days there.
I live in Wisconsin now, but 25 yrs ago we farmed in south Dakota. The roads are way worse in south Dakota because they dont salt or plow often. It's much easier driving in Wisconsin! Lol
I'm also from Wisconsin but I live near Madison. My roads are plowed super fast but my grandparents live up north in the middle of nowhere where it's super dangerous to be driving and they plow themselves. Honestly depends on where you live. Lol

I laughed when Kara called it "old Geyser". My kids started calling it "old Awful" because they couldn't remember the name. We still call it Old Awful because we think it's such a funny name
I was shocked driving in Montana and Idaho seeing so many hundreds of miles of land. I'm from a small town Northern California yet even our small towns are never too far from stuff.
At 30 with two kids I moved to nowhere North Dakota and was trapped in a few bad blizzards, and lived this nightmare for a year, because you have to learn how to survive their winters. And you did exactly the right thing to keep driving and not stop on the highway, Black Ice is scary! The Dakota's are no joke! Glad you two are safe. ❤

Nine months after I originally discovered this video, and decided to go back and watch from the beginning, I've made it back here. Even without knowing you two, I cried along with Kara the first time I watched - I have driven into a sudden white out before and I know how that terror finally hits you when you've made it out the other side. Now I feel like I know you two so much better after watching 775 videos and I found myself crying again. I am so thankful you both made it out in one piece from that snow storm, and I am so grateful for the joy your videos have brought me over these past nine months. I can't wait to watch the remaining 46 videos and be able to follow along with your continued travels "in real time" - and to finally follow you on social media (I've been avoiding *spoilers*)!

This is just normal winter driving for us in Maine, (except we have WAAAY more snow) but I can't imagine how stressful it must be for someone from the south, who isn't used to driving in snow on a regular basis. Good job Nate. Big hugs Kara
One Christmas we were driving to Washington from Salt Lake. We had to pull over and stay in Boise because the snow was crazy. We got up to a beautiful blue bird morning, got back on the road, and passed several cars in the median, and a truck flipped over and surranouned by wrapped Christmas presents that had flown out of a broken back window. Driving is serious business.

Hahaha...I was that kid once driving overnight from Florida to Ohio. I left the house wearing shorts, tank top and flips. Fell asleep in the back of car while my parents drove. Woke up in Ohio with 3 feet of snow. Glad you guys made it thru ok.

I’ve enjoyed your videos, it was hard to see you so scared, I know that God loves every single person on this planet, I can’t help but believe He had a hand in keeping you guys safe. My dad was killed in a car accident when I was 13, it wasn’t long after that that I started going to a local church that taught Gods word, I started realizing that He loved me more then even my earthly dad did and that like my parents He wanted the best for me and didn’t want me to hurt myself. I gave my life to Him and accepted His gift of salvation and forgiveness for my sins and wrong doing. Even though I was only 13 I knew that I had done things wrong. That was 51 years ago, the older I get the more I know how much He cares about me. I will be praying for safety on your journeys. God bless you both and thank you for sharing your travels with me.
yo anyone who is about to be mean who lives in a northern state and is used to driving in this stuff, stop. you have to remember they have NEVER lived through a snowy winter their whole lives so they are not used to driving in these kinds of conditions, so please be nice.
I mean if you’re not use to it wait out the storm and don’t put others lives at risk. They could’ve wrecked into a semi, blew thru a stop sign in low visibility causing a wreck, or ended up on the side of the road where a local tow truck would have to risk his life on the highway to go save them. Ignorance isn’t an excuse to put others in harms way. If they were going to commit to traveling across country they should have committed to educating themselves on the conditions and how to properly prepare for winter storms in this part of the country. Otherwise, wait till summer. Us locals don’t want our families hurt because a guy in a van from Tennessee doesn’t know to slow down on black ice.
@@heatherzelenka11x did u not see how fast the roads froze over when they were driving?? they literally said a few miles back the road was fine and then it turned to ice the next few miles...as soon as it got bad they took the first exit they could. you should know that in these states, exits are far and few in between. they literally did everything they could. did u even watch the vid?
@@CaseyandBreelyn thats the thing, the roads were never fine and anyone who drives these roads often can see it in the video and know they weren’t fine from the beginning. They saw “black” and thought the roads were fine and he even makes the comment “a little icy still tho” because what they didn’t know was the black wasn’t the road/asphalt, it was black ice. Driving around here you know a heavy/wet snow as they were in was going to cause ice the moment it touches the asphalt. Everyone in the states that were hit during this time locked down because we all knew that this storm was going to be heavy and cause major ice problems. Hence why there were only truckers, tourist at the gas station, and police on the road. The Dakotas, Montana, and Wyoming do not salt or throw dirt on their roads like other states to preserve their lands. So people come out expecting the roads to melt, they don’t. You can guarantee as soon as a snow storm is predicted the roads will be crap and you should plan on staying off of them.
You gotta realize when you're in Yellowstone, you're in the caldera of an ancient megavolcano. All the geysers are heated by a huge magma chamber several thousand feet below.
Carry chains, and you're fine. Living in a nice roomy van like that means you have nowhere to go fast. You learn patience and how to enjoy the moment that way. It's good for you.
Being in Canada I know this all to well....it never gets easier. Losing control of your vehicle makes you feel so helpless. Kara's reaction is me everytime this happens....so scary.... glad your aok! 🙏
Sorry you had to go through this. If you don’t have snow tires it’s worse. Even in Canada where we should be use to this kind of weather, it’s still very frightening when you encounter a snow storm on the road. Glad you got through it safely. Yellowstone looked lovely.
Living in the deep Canadian south I have never used snow tires. I usually don't have any issues when we have snow I just change the way I drive. Of course I am so south I go north to get to Detroit. If I worry about the road conditions I usually do some hard breaking in front of my house just to see how my van handles.
Watching you both supporting each other & being each other’s rocks is one of the reasons I keep watching your videos. As well as the cute one liners...there’s a subway and Kara’s woohoos 🥰
This happened to me in February driving through Northern Arizona during my LA to ATL road trip. The main highway was closed because of the snowstorm so I had to take backroads through mountains. I could barely see in front of me and in the dark but like Nate I made the decision to keep going and just go slow. Eventually, I got to Albuquerque, my destination for the night after driving 11+ hours. It was originally supposed to be 8 or 9 but the snow and slow speeds made us behind schedule by 2-3 hours.
I drove through Texas during a snow storm in 2015 and it was exactly the same situation as yours. So many 18 wheelers flipped, I was so grateful my roommate was driving, one of the scariest things

Here's a few tips from someone who lives in Wisconsin: 1. Throw your hazards on in that kind of weather so the person behind you can see you and know something is up. 2. SLOW DOWN!!! Slow way way down. Like a crawling speed. 3. Use the driver ahead of you as a guide to know where the road is. 4. If you are tall enough and it's safe enough, open up your window and slap your windshield wiper against the windshield. That will help to get some of the ice off. 5. In crappy weather like that, always have bags of kitty litter with you. If you ever get stuck in the snow the kitty litter is great traction and it weighs down your vehicle. 6. Pile ups are a real concern when driving in that bad of weather. If possible, turn down the radio and keep the windows open so you can hear for screeching tires or cars crashing. It'll give you a little bit of time to take action instead of having a pileup sneak up on you.
Stay safe and safe travels! If you are traveling in the midwest currently, just know we usually get that one NASTY snow storm in April. After that one ugly snow storm, than it's officially spring.
Karen, as a Michigan girl, who has been driving 60 plus years, I back you up. If the driving is bad, it can get much worse real fast. Slow down.
Put on hazards. You never know what the next patch of highway will be in icy, snowy wintry weather. Hard to tell what his speed was, but they seemed to be clipping along pretty good.
We just got several inches of snow today. Roads were good though. We have seen snow in July too. Just always be prepared, go slow if in doubt, and ask for help if needed.
It seems he threw his time frame (schedule out the window 13hrs of driving) as soon as the shit hit the fan. Good on him stopping. I bet next time he'll stop sooner.

That reminds me so much of our crash in snow when I was 9 months pregnant. My husband just remained really calm and said ‘I can’t brake’ and we just slid down a hill and braced for the crash. Thank goodness we managed to turn and have our stop braced by a large bush/tree. Still the scariest moment of my life. I really felt your emotions, Kara.

My mom was in a really bad car accident about 11 years ago. They were driving when a teen driver pulled out and struck them on the front of her driver’s side, while trying to cross a large road, sending them careening towards an electrical pole. My mom started to panic for a split second but then she said she saw a man standing in the road, and she was terrified of hitting him, (and also cursing at him for being so stupid and being in the middle of the road, lol), so she forced herself to regain what control she could of the vehicle, and somehow guided just beyond a power pole on the shoulder. At this point her steering wheel was messed up, and the front of the car was WRECKED., but she came to a stop along a field just beyond that power pole which police and EMT’s both joked about, saying things like “you made it really easy for the tow guys that’s for sure!” because it truly looked like she just pulled off on the shoulder of the road, mind you, the car was mechanically no longer functional as soon as the accident occurred. As for the man in the road, I won’t get into that here. We don’t know what it was. Was it a ghost, Jesus, a man no one on scene saw by coincidence, or perhaps a complete hallucination on my moms part. I don’t know. But it’s the thing that snapped her into focus and made her regain control because she was terrified of hitting this man. It only occurred to her after that.. why the hell would he be in the middle of a busy street with cars coming? He’d have gotten hit anyways honestly. And funny enough, apparently that’s a “thing”. EMT’s hear commonly people talk about seeing people when accidents occur in weird places. Maybe it’s some sort of mental phenomenon. Us hoping aid is around so bad that we imagine people are there? I dunno.

The cop was screened by the truck and didn't see them. They were already past the stop sign when the cops driver side came into view. Up Here in the rural west cops will only let you get away with blowing a stop sign if there is good visibility and the snow is so deep you could get stuck. Other wise they'll ticket you and tell you to get the hell off the road if you are to scared to drive and obey signs, cause you are a danger to everyone on the road. I drove kids on school bus to sports tournaments four hours away and left in worse condition than that. This is a time lapse of the first storm we got to open winter 2020 in the first 30 seconds of the time lapse is the conditions I saw in this video. Seriously folks! get some real tires and man up. I got studded winter grips on my vehicles. The evening of the storm I was working at my son's place then drove home. Morning after the storm in the time lapse I jumped in my truck. drove to the gas station and picked up diesel for my garage heater and gas for my snow blower. Wife jumped in with me and we also went grocery shopping. plow didn't come to clean the streets for days.
This may sound harsh but people scared of driving weather and unequipped should not be on the road in weather. They endanger everyone else. Skipping that stop sign in bad visibility could cause an accident. Look how cool the cop didn't ticket? I'll put my life that if the cop had actually seen them skip that traffic sign he would not only have ticketed them he would have torn a strip off of them. possibly even added improper equipment if they were driving around on 150,000 k summer tires and maybe even dangerous driving to boot. I used to drive tow truck and was on emergency services. Day and night I was out there dealing with people that shouldn't have been out there. Some of them survived it.
Serious question here! Van life and they never checked the weather???? If it sounds harsh then good! If someone would have been harsh before maybe these people would not have ended up over their heads.
The police can be very understanding during different weather conditions. My friend had an officer wave him on cause it was raining and he had someone driving up his ass. He couldn't stop safely at the red light and the officer understood cause the same thing was happening to him.
Another thing I noticed is how much you respect each other. When one is talking the other is quietly listening in the background and not interrupting. You're just the best couple on UA-cam ever.

@@loganlevy400 i'm also talking about in Canada driving up a massive mountain backwards covered in snow as every time he went forward we slipped down the mountain. My dad also drove in conditions for his kids where you could not see the road or ahead at all and had to use the gps to see where the road was supposed to be cause it was so covered in snow and he couldn't see ahead. That was the only time he ever said he was scared. But even in that he was calm as a cucumber in the moment just said it was intense driving later.

I've been driving in trash weather like this my entire life living on the Iowa/Minnesota border. I can't imagine how stressful this was for Nate. He did a great job. If you are not used to this type of weather conditions it can be extremely dangerous.

It's called "BLACK ICE" (you can't see it). I used to live in PA and this would happen a lot. I'll never forget just starting to drive and I did a 360 at a red light from it. SO SCARY! So glad you two are safe.

As a Canadian I feel like we tend to laugh off those types of situations because we are raised driving in wild road conditions, but we often forget that if you don't learn to drive in the snow and ice and your vehicles aren't necessarily equipped for that weather, it can be really dangerous and super overwhelming. So glad you're both alright and made it safe and sound :) Now you'll have another adventurous story to share!

As a California native that moved to Colorado several times, and basically learned to drive in Co. …,I’ve learned the hard way that black top/snow free doesn’t mean safe. Black ice is a real thing and very tricky to navigate. You feeling like there was a magnet to the semi trucks that ran off the road would be you hit the same black ice they did. 😧🥶🫣

Guys! I’ve lived in western Canada my entire life. I’ve driven through my fair share of snow storms and every single time it’s terrifying as you count cars in the ditch and pray you don’t join them....or worse. Several times during winter the police issue warnings to stay off the road but with my job I don’t have the option to shelter in place. Driving in these storms as a novice or a pro is terrifying. Thankfully now it’s just a scary story you can add to the many stories of your travels. Stay safe and healthy guys!

Got caught in tooley fog on I5 in California at night and I 100% understand the trapped feeling. You cannot stop cause you're sure someone will hit you, you can't pull over because you can't see the shoulder, you can't do anything but continue to drive in that terrifying condition. It's an very weird kind of terror. You don't know when it will end.

That is the truth ! I did mobile security patrol many years ago in Utah, the company used 2010 Ford Mustangs as patrol cars... those cars are NOT good in the snow lol After driving all night I finally get home and unwind, it was an incredible feeling lol
I SO relate to this. I grew up in a very snowy environment and I definitely don't miss the feeling of driving in the snow or on ice. When they started to slide I literally had flashbacks to the time I slid into a ditch. Ooof! Luckily now the only snow we get disappears in a matter of hours.

Totally made sense to me. Its called being "Snow blind". The shades help you differentiate between all the white around you and where the hell the road just went.
@@charlotteblack7593 This... The Inuit people and other peoples that live in cold climates have types of shades to cut down the light from ice and snow to prevent snow blindness, the Inuit call them ilgaak... Just Google that for pictures.
As someone who lived in the West for a long time, sunglasses in snow help to reduce eye strain in snow storms.

i grew up in CA. didn't drive ice and snow country until my 30's in MN. in a 2wd, i figured out to down shift to slow the vehicle without using the brakes so much. have to be at 40 mph or less but it helps. if climbing, seesaw the wheel to grab traction. i also noticed, in snowpack, find the line of fresh snow and travel with one side of tires on that and the other on pack. it seems to help. wishing you safe travels.

For what it's worth, just wanted to say that your feelings are valid and that I'm sure that even the most experienced of drivers still experience fear every now and then. Watching this was like reliving our time driving our skoolie on unfamiliar old curvey mountain roads with a dog and a cat, a broken headlight and through the early darkness with no streetlights to be found. We made a video on it too - honestly thought we might not make it around a few curves. Glad you made it out unscathed!

As someone who has been to Yellowstone in the winter and the summer, I HIGHLY reccomebd skipping the warmer months. It's a totally different experience in winter because it's way less crowded. A much more magical experience.

Hey I'm a fellow North Dakotain! I also agree he did well. And Kara I almost had a wipe out in winter when driving by myself, the well of emotions is real.
North Dakota guy here. As soon as I saw those roads and the wind pushing the snow sideways and lowering visibility and knowing what you guys are driving, I got tense. I KNOW how dangerous the roads in the Dakotas get with the snow and the wind. Everyone up here has a winter survival kit in their car. @@KaraandNate my mom and I had to drive from Rehoboth Beach DE to Fairfield CA in November bc my grandparents passed away. This was 10 years ago. My son was a baby daughter was 8. They stayed with Pop and the babysitter. Not only did I have grief to deal with, not having my kids, my mom has never driven farther than an hour away (we dont really get along either) but she wanted to do the majority of the driving. NEBRASKA IN NOVEMBER IS THE WORST. 18 wheelers flippes over. 7° with the wind blowing so hard it was blowing thru the foundation and walls of the hotel. Yall did good. We would be on cleae interstate and then BLAM snow all over the road blowing straight across back to clear back to snow. I will never (ok ok ill try super hard) complain about tourists in the summer again! Glad yall were ok! That stuff is very scary.

Oh man. As a Wisconsinite, this activated my winter driving PTSD. It's brutal. Also, Yellowstone is crazy. I can't believe they let you walk on those boardwalks over boiling hot water like that.
@Stephanie, the boardwalks are safe and you don’t feel the heat. I’ve been there in the late summer and it is truly an amazing place to see. In order to really take it all in and enjoy, you have to spend a few days there.
I live in Wisconsin now, but 25 yrs ago we farmed in south Dakota. The roads are way worse in south Dakota because they dont salt or plow often. It's much easier driving in Wisconsin! Lol
I'm also from Wisconsin but I live near Madison. My roads are plowed super fast but my grandparents live up north in the middle of nowhere where it's super dangerous to be driving and they plow themselves. Honestly depends on where you live. Lol

At 30 with two kids I moved to nowhere North Dakota and was trapped in a few bad blizzards, and lived this nightmare for a year, because you have to learn how to survive their winters. And you did exactly the right thing to keep driving and not stop on the highway, Black Ice is scary! The Dakota's are no joke! Glad you two are safe. ❤

Even without knowing you two, I cried along with Kara the first time I watched - I have driven into a sudden white out before and I know how that terror finally hits you when you've made it out the other side. Now I feel like I know you two so much better after watching 775 videos and I found myself crying again. I am so thankful you both made it out in one piece from that snow storm, and I am so grateful for the joy your videos have brought me over these past nine months. This is just normal winter driving for us in Maine, (except we have WAAAY more snow) but I can't imagine how stressful it must be for someone from the south, who isn't used to driving in snow on a regular basis. Good job Nate. Big hugs Kara

One Christmas we were driving to Washington from Salt Lake. We had to pull over and stay in Boise because the snow was crazy. We got up to a beautiful blue bird morning, got back on the road, and passed several cars in the median, and a truck flipped over and surranouned by wrapped Christmas presents that had flown out of a broken back window. Driving is serious business.

Hahaha...I was that kid once driving overnight from Florida to Ohio. I left the house wearing shorts, tank top and flips. Fell asleep in the back of car while my parents drove. Woke up in Ohio with 3 feet of snow. Glad you guys made it thru ok.

I’ve enjoyed your videos, it was hard to see you so scared, I know that God loves every single person on this planet, I can’t help but believe He had a hand in keeping you guys safe. My dad was killed in a car accident when I was 13, it wasn’t long after that that I started going to a local church that taught Gods word, I started realizing that He loved me more then even my earthly dad did and that like my parents He wanted the best for me and didn’t want me to hurt myself. I gave my life to Him and accepted His gift of salvation and forgiveness for my sins and wrong doing. Even though I was only 13 I knew that I had done things wrong. That was 51 years ago, the older I get the more I know how much He cares about me. I will be praying for safety on your journeys. God bless you both and thank you for sharing your travels with me.
yo anyone who is about to be mean who lives in a northern state and is used to driving in this stuff, stop. you have to remember they have NEVER lived through a snowy winter their whole lives so they are not used to driving in these kinds of conditions, so please be nice.
I mean if you’re not use to it wait out the storm and don’t put others lives at risk. They could’ve wrecked into a semi, blew thru a stop sign in low visibility causing a wreck, or ended up on the side of the road where a local tow truck would have to risk his life on the highway to go save them. Ignorance isn’t an excuse to put others in harms way. If they were going to commit to traveling across country they should have committed to educating themselves on the conditions and how to properly prepare for winter storms in this part of the country. Otherwise, wait till summer. Us locals don’t want our families hurt because a guy in a van from Tennessee doesn’t know to slow down on black ice.
@@heatherzelenka11x did u not see how fast the roads froze over when they were driving?? they literally said a few miles back the road was fine and then it turned to ice the next few miles...as soon as it got bad they took the first exit they could. you should know that in these states, exits are far and few in between. they literally did everything they could. did u even watch the vid?
@@CaseyandBreelyn thats the thing, the roads were never fine and anyone who drives these roads often can see it in the video and know they weren’t fine from the beginning. They saw “black” and thought the roads were fine and he even makes the comment “a little icy still tho” because what they didn’t know was the black wasn’t the road/asphalt, it was black ice. Driving around here you know a heavy/wet snow as they were in was going to cause ice the moment it touches the asphalt. Everyone in the states that were hit during this time locked down because we all knew that this storm was going to be heavy and cause major ice problems. Hence why there were only truckers, tourist at the gas station, and police on the road. The Dakotas, Montana, and Wyoming do not salt or throw dirt on their roads like other states to preserve their lands. So people come out expecting the roads to melt, they don’t. You can guarantee as soon as a snow storm is predicted the roads will be crap and you should plan on staying off of them.

You gotta realize when you're in Yellowstone, you're in the caldera of an ancient megavolcano. All the geysers are heated by a huge magma chamber several thousand feet below.
Carry chains, and you're fine. Living in a nice roomy van like that means you have nowhere to go fast. You learn patience and how to enjoy the moment that way. It's good for you.
Also…always have chains just in case. If illegal in your state…use the sock chains.

Sorry you had to go through this. If you don’t have snow tires it’s worse. Even in Canada where we should be use to this kind of weather, it’s still very frightening when you encounter a snow storm on the road. Glad you got through it safely. Yellowstone looked lovely.
Living in the deep Canadian south I have never used snow tires. I usually don't have any issues when we have snow I just change the way I drive. Of course I am so south I go north to get to Detroit. If I worry about the road conditions I usually do some hard breaking in front of my house just to see how my van handles.

This happened to me in February driving through Northern Arizona during my LA to ATL road trip. The main highway was closed because of the snowstorm so I had to take backroads through mountains. I could barely see in front of me and in the dark but like Nate I made the decision to keep going and just go slow. Eventually, I got to Albuquerque, my destination for the night after driving 11+ hours. It was originally supposed to be 8 or 9 but the snow and slow speeds made us behind schedule by 2-3 hours.
I drove through Texas during a snow storm in 2015 and it was exactly the same situation as yours. So many 18 wheelers flipped, I was so grateful my roommate was driving, one of the scariest things
