  • Croton plants come in a wide variety of shapes and colors. How to rid your plant of meely bugs, scale, and mites.
My houseplant, croton, was infested with scale, so I treeted it with neem oil, but the infestation was too established, so I had to go to drastic measures.

I was a boy who played outside and with bugs.
In first grade I created a "bug zoo" until my mother freaked out, but shortly after my parents got me a cat, so it worked out.

      Aloha, my friend.
Crotons, as indoor plants, do not seem as strong as indoor plants. They need a lot of light, and they do not like to sit in water.
TeedarkAngel, I appreciate you visiting. I want you to know that I've noticed and that I appreciate your friendship.

My parents had a small nursery set up exclusively for growing Croton‘s a few years back. They are beautiful plants and very resilient.. but Man when you mention the scale it brought me back.
We were preparing to ship to Singapore so they had to be clean clean.. And scale got into the crotons pretty bad. We spent days if not week’s de scaling and wiping down hundreds of plants with soapy water.
It worked out great in the end but man.. those little green bastards.
Crotons are awesome plants! All shapes sizes colors. My parents painted their yard using them and it looks so beautiful! Highly recommend :)

I don't know if it's "racist" but each time I read your comments, I hear an Australian accent :) which I think is a manly accent, but my exposure to the accent are from Australian tourist that I've services when I worked in Hawaii's visitors industry. Always wonderfully down-to-earth people.
Crocodile Dundee movies of the 1980s, Chris Hemsworth's Thor. That movie mini series in the 1980's 'Thornbirds.' .The Crocodile Hunter' - Australia seems amazing, but I suppose there is a "movie fantasy component" at work here because Hawaii isn't all 'Hawaii 5-O' 'LILO and Stich,' or 'Blood and Orchids."

      Dear Mary,
Well, I am biased, and I appreciate my luck of being born here, but the cost of living is so high that I may not be able to retire here. Most retirees relocate to Nevada and Arizona. That's a culture shock for me. I may retire in the Philippines. It's another tropical island, so how different could it be?

      Denice!
I just found your come not. I usually go to your comments first.
The webbing I fearfully suspect is spider mites. I hate spider mites!
Take these plants outside - considering whether, and hose the leave, especially the bottom of the leaves down with a spray of water. Do this in the morning so the plant has enough time to dry - if you must take the plant back into the house that same hour or end-of-the-day, tilt the plant on a 30-45* angle to alter the 'perched water table' before bringing it back into the house.
Spray the plant with 'neem oil' (dilute as directed), especially under the leaves.
You may have to repeat it a couple of days - beware not to keep the plant soaked. I've gone as far as to use Saran Wrap to cover the soil the second and third day as I hose/spray the plant to keep it from promoting root rot or fungus gnats.
I hate spider mites, they are so small I don't find them until they are established!
My thoughts are with you, my dear friend,
      Gerald:)

      Plants are my Therapy
Good evening Gerald, I found my crotons turning dark and they are in a South facing window, three large ones. I haven’t seen this bug in my Plants but you have me wondering! I don’t like their appearance after a year! I see they don’t look healthy!
Ad I reached to open a window, I accidentally knocked over the stand where my croton fell over! What a mess on a very light cream carpet! Well, so much for my sickly looking plant! I believe you are right, you can’t always get what you want.
I found it difficult to find a fertilizer such as worm castings. I found one store in Lavoniia. And didn’t get the only bag on the shelf! Sadly,
Glad you’re back and of course you were missed! Please let me know if there is anything ZI can do to help my 2 crotons look well again. I propagated another one and realized that I have five now! How our plants do multiply😀😍.lol! My large croton is doing well but the older ones should be growing after one year!
      Thank you Gerald

LOL! Apparently they grow big in the tropics. I've had mealy bugs that size on my Tahitian Gardenia Tree, and I didn't want to use chemicals, so I got up early every morning and picked out all the mealy bugs I could find/reach, then I hoses/sprayed the under side of the canopy with water. Seems like the mealy bugs can handle getting wet. I had an easier time ridding them from my tree than from any houseplant.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Wishing you well and pleasant dreams 😊

Thanks for another great video! I'm not a fan of Crotons, they're difficult to keep in Canada unless you have grow lights and like you, I'm not a fan of the garish colours.

      Hello Tabatha,
Aloha from Hwaii! Lucky you're in Canada right now. The humid tropical heat it exhausting! I had a hard time keeping crotons alive as Houseplants in Hawaii because it seems bug love attacking this plant. I suspect it came from the garden center with scale bugs, but I already found a spot for it outside.

I drowned my plant in the koi pond. No kois were harmed, but thelittle guppies had fun. I think the snails and the guppies picked off the insects on the plant or the insects just drowned and fell off, but I think it was the former.

I just received mine in the mail and the leaves will not purp up. The soil is moist but I think it might be in shock from the travel to my house. It is currently 21 degrees in New York. I'll see if there is a contact number for the nursery. Don't know what else to do.

    • @PlantsaremyTherapy

      Hello Dawn
Keep the plant away from cold drafts, keep it away from the heater. let it sit out this winter. just keep it alive. if the leaves fall out, just let it go, and probably best not to water it until the soil is completely dry. in the spring is your best chance to turn this plant around.
Good luck, I know how hard it is to see anything suffer.
Try to have a happy and healthy holiday

Can I use Alaskan fish fertilizer on ALL my indoor plants ?

    • @PlantsaremyTherapy
      @PlantsaremyTherapy  3 роки тому

Yes you can, but remember that it will smell like fish for about a day. Also remember that women have a better sense of smell, so it may be more than a day.
I hate fish smell, so I dilute the fish fertilizer and water the plants on the patio in the evening, then I let it stay there over night. In the morning I get up early to light hose the plants down, and before the sun gets too hot, I bring them inside.
      Hope this helps.

Alot of people say crotons don't like drafts, warm OR cold but if they thrive outside...how could that be? Is that false information?

    • @PlantsaremyTherapy
      @PlantsaremyTherapy  3 роки тому

      Hello, Banana Fana
Aloha from Hawaii! I hope you had a good day. Thank you for visiting me. It really means a lot to me.
Crotons are a tropical plant, so they thrive in bright sun, but they do better if they get some shelter from the brigth sun outside. As an indoor plant, they need bright light and can handle periods of direct light. They can handle the heat, but I don't think they can handle the cold. I hope this helps, my dear friend.
Again, thank you for visiting. I hope you have a wonderful weekend 😊

I always check the clearance plants at the Iwilei Home Depot when I go there. There was one time I saw a plant there--I don't remember what kind of plant--that was covered in scale bugs. I mean the stems were just fully covered. I was aghast. I assume that's why they had it in clearance. Very inappropriate. They shouldn't have had it anywhere but in the trash. No one was around for me to point it out to, unfortunately, and I was in a hurry. I hope someone ignorant of pest didn't buy it. I picked up a Pele's Fire croton at Times in a four inch pot. I just love that plant. It's getting leggy, though, so I have to figure out how to get it to bush out. It really looks like fire. Interesting plants pop up at Times sometimes. I picked up a variegated ohi'a abut five inches tall there in a four inch pot for $5! I guess it was probably a cutting. It's now a gorgeous tree about seven feet high in my front yard. You really have to keep your eyes open for those rare finds.

Hello Gerald, took your advice and took my croton out with spider web. I accidentally knocked John (name of croton). It’s funny, I don’t know any Johns so it’s the biblical character John! Sooo, The wilting is quite obvious but you’re making me nervous!
John is on my balcony , but it’s getting cool here in Michigan! Sooo, it shall be outside for a while. I saw nooo spider mites when mine was dropped!
I have nooo reservations that it could be mites! Gerald ,will Neem Oil help with the spider webs?
Please help me with this issue and guess the other croton( Joshua)😌 will join its buddy😞. I have a beautiful vibrant one facing South and loves it! Crotons enjoy misting but I may not mist daily, just precautionary.
Well keep fingers crossed and hopefully I will hear from you soon! It’s Friday! So, will leave them alone and hope
    Take care you!

      Good afternoon, Denice
I'm not sure about crotons specifically, but most tropical plants do well >60*F, and they struggle in cooler temperatures.
Maybe the spider webs are from spiders. I hope your croton recovers.
      Take care, my friend

@@PlantsaremyTherapy hello Gerald thank you for replying best wishes to you and your family in this crucial time in the world today we just have to keep praying... I'm glad to know that the bugs haven't returned, as for the scales at least try my remedy on a few for safe measures if you want because it really worked for me. 1. The soap will help to stick the mixture to the plants while still helping to get rid of the scales.
2.The vinegar will help in lifting the scales just as it dirtiness from tile and surfaces, yet still working with the acidic taste.
      3. The bleach will help further with the fumes and taste...
Add a little of each in water and watch it work. I which you good luck.

      Hello, Vera
I tried ordering from catalogs, but my job hours are so strenuous and the needs of my grandchildren as so unpredictable, that I may not be able to get to my mailed plants as fast as I need. It's been over a year, and my curry tree is only 8 inches tall.
I haven’t been on UA-cam for quite some time. It’s been a challenging year and I had to tend to family.
I hope you will be able to visit me when you have time.
Wishing you good health and happiness always,
      Gerald😊

      Aloha from Hawaii!
I'll try that, but the plant, for some reason, is doing quite well and hasn't been infested for months. It's about five feet tall now.
Thanks for visiting and taking the time to write
