    I like the Zanzibar variety for my aquarium (just the roots in the water!) since other water-loving plants (peace lilies, pothos, etc.) tend to have bigger leaves & take up a lot of room, the Zanzibar doesn't & it complements the yellow, orange & red plants within the aquarium. 😎

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  6 років тому +3

      No problem Leticia! They will grow in either, but best color and health will come from neutral to slightly acid soil. Mine are in slightly acidic potting mix, but all spring and summer they are watered with my tap, and that is very alkaline, around 8.4! So they have some flexibility for sure. :)

      with more sun, it should color back up for you just fine. Sometimes it mostly shows on the new growth, but the old should change as well.

    Your Petra crotons by your front step AND in the ground by your pool - I think it’s a Pygmy date palm?? Anyway - your crotons are gorgeous! I’m in Fort Lauderdale so I have a few in my yard as well.
    I also have four that are similar to the “mother daughter” croton you showed, but I think they may be called “shoestring” croton? I’m not sure don’t quote me 100% on that. But one of them has lost about 75% of its leaves, I’ve had them since around 2018 with no issues. Do you know if I cut it back significantly would it grow back healthy?

    In California they are very marginal. I find that they are best kept in the bay area in mostly sun in summer..and then moved on to shelter like a porch in winter to keep off cold rains and light frosts. Small leafs tend to be more hardy then wide leafed plants and the most common? Petra" one of the more tender and will drop leaves in the cold. Mammy,Curly Boy and for me "Excellence" are holding up best and can live over a winter. Not a sure thing! I think the consensus is "Stoplight" is the most cold hardy of all the cultivars. One to look for in California.

    Hi plant friend! I need to replant my Croton ( needs more soil and I see roots popping up on top of the soil and down below). I'm not sure what to use for potting soil. My kid is indoors, stays in my kitchen. I have organic potting soil, coco coir, pumice, orchid bark, worm castings, charcoal. Can any of these be used in it's soil or should I get something else? Thank you for your help

    I'm in Sydney Australia. I bought this a few weeks ago and placed in my patio. It's summer here right now. But I'm worried about winter and if they might not survive it. Sydney falls in the hardiness zone 10 (11 on the coast though, where I'm NOT at). We do get around 2-3 mild frosty mornings per winter though. So, should I take them inside once its winter? Or they can handle a few nights that reach close to 32F/0C?

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  5 років тому +1

      Hello, Era! A few nights of light frost wont kill them so long as the following temps are nice and warm (over 70F) and they aren't sopping wet during the cold spells. Can always toss a sheet of frost cloth over them as well to help protect them on those colder nights. If it looks like the cold nights are going to be back-to-back then i would suggest covering them or moving them indoors to keep them looking nice. :)

    Ok... I just bought a Petro about 4 days ago. She was absolutely gorgeous when I brought her home, and like most other plants, I watered her because the soil was pretty dry... I picked it up from Kroger, and I know they don't care for the plants correctly, so I just watered it. That's it. 2 hours after watering the plants, they were COMPLETELY WILTED. I first thought it was because I brought it home and it's temperature and lighting was changed, and thought she'd perk back up within a day or two,.. but she's still completely wilted and no signs or making a comeback... Please tell me what I did WRONG 😟😞

    I live in Dallas, zone 8a. I have other "tropical" plants such as Colocasia and Basjoo Banana that leaves die off in winter, however with mulched beds they come back. Is this true for Crotons as well? Many thanks.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  5 років тому

      Hey Jake! I've heard of then growing as deciduous shrubs in zone 9 before from other people who have commented on the videos. Idk about zone 8 though, that might be a bit too cold. They really die quickly with hard frost. Especially if there isn't really warm weather following immediatly afterwards.

      @@rockmom62 I don't know if he ever replied to you, but I had a croton that was acting similar to how you described. I put the container in high but filtered light outside to help it dry out a bit. After that, it perked right up! now I just keep it slightly moist at all times, but never soggy. What is a good natural remedy for a developing root mold?
    I've a mammy croton {(scientific name: Codiaeum) from South India} & the leaves started dropping off. When I pulled it up to check its root system I realized it needs more space & something to prevent rot development.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  6 років тому +1

      good drainage and aeration is one of the best ways to avoid rot. Sulphur powder also works well. Even though Sulphur powder is natural, it isn't that great for the environment if it leaches out heavily, so moderation is best. Adding in some perlite, coarse grade sand, permatill or turface ( my favorite) to growing area will help increase drainage and air flow. Hope all is well! :)
