- Tire warranties promise 60,000 miles, 80,000 miles, even 100,000 miles. But our extensive testing finds they don't always deliver.

I've never had any tires last even close to the advertised mileage! I did have a set of Goodyear Tires, back in the early 70's that were poliglass/steel belted radial ply tires that went 61k miles, and were rated for 50k miles. They were installed on a 68 Chrysler New Yorker. Couldn't find replacements, because they were discontinued.
I've never achieved anywhere near the warranty mileage figures. When I lived up north, it was blamed on the poor conditions of the roads, now that I live in So Fl, the heat and humidity get the blame. The worst offender was an 80k mile tire I once bought at a Sears outlet. No only where they slippery, they only lasted about 40k miles.
At 131k miles, one of the Michelin tires failed on my Subaru, internal belt or whatever shifted making that one tire slightly lumpy. All four still had a decent amount of tread on them. "Hows a tire guy supposed to make any money" the shop owner exclaimed.
I miss the Michelin Hydroedge. I used three sets over the life of my Nissan Frontier, and got over 100,000 miles from two sets. The third set was still on it when the timing chain tensioner broke and I donated the vehicle.
I just got some Continental TrueContact tires for my wife's car. I have no expectation that the tires will last 90,000 miles. I don't think I can keep up with keeping the car in perfect alignment and rotating the tires on schedule.
This will help me when I need a new pair of tires.
I buy Michelin tires at CostCo. Long wearing tires,60,000 miles, tires rotation and flat repair available at no extra charge.
I have done over a 20k miles in my kumho optimo tires and still looks so new
Having to drive 100,000 miles on a set of all seasons sounds like automotive hell :)
My Wal Mart Good year Viva 2 ties were 40,000 mile tires and they had half their treat life at 30,000. They were awful noisy though.
is there any way to make a claim on the warranty before reaching the dangerous depth (for new england) of 2/32"? i usually replace at the rain-safe recommendation of 4/32". my 60k warranted michelins are already halfway there after just 15k miles (my oem bridgestones lasted 58k for comparison).
I recommend change every 2-3 years if you live in cold and hot climate like Midwest. I always change my every 2.5-3 years due to weather.
i've noticed that whenever i've gotten a new car, the tires only last about 20k or so miles. do companies cheap out on tires for their new cars??
I've got 8/32 left at 62,000 miles on my 2013 Frontier's original Goodrich Long Trail TA tires. I rotate every 5000 miles and about half my driving is at highway speeds. I'm impressed, but when I replace them I'm going for Michelins.
Perelli makes good tires and undercuts Michelin on price.
Pirelli p4 are skiddish and have a harsh ride. Not the ideal tire regardless of tire life imho.
Would it be advisable to take tires to the 100K mark? At what point does aging, internal damage, and rot become an issue?
Do what I do: drive everything like you just stole the car. Tire mileage will be the least of your concerns. ;)
Seriously, I've never owned a car that I'd want to see after 100k miles. Every tire is lifetime to me.
Oh yeah, and Michelin rocks.
Average people put 100k on a car in 2 years and then there’s guys like me who do 100k miles in a year on service calls.
I have BF Goodrich Rugged Terrains, if i remember correctly they say 60,000 miles. I have driven around 10,000 and they are well past half tread gone. These tires are garbage.
I have seen factory Michelin latitude tour on 2012 Chevy equinox last 110K miles. The tire is only rated for 65k miles.
Oh I would just love to get 160k kilometers from a set of tyres
Michelin is the best overall.
How does tire company know when u installed the tires and how many miles are on them?
I got a set of Nokians enTyre(1st gen). 5,000 miles on them, they still have 11/32nds tread. Honestly the way I see it, just buy a tire that's a good price and has a higher tread wear rating. 700 will wear slower than 450.
Don't forget road hazards. You can spend $200+ a tire but that doesn't mean potholes or curbs won't damage them.
Did you know the UTQG treadwear rating is provided by the manufacturer themselves? It’s rather meaningless. It just rates how tire has worn in testing versus a control tire. Which explains why my Nokians have gone from 11/32 to 6/32 in 16k miles despite having a 500 rating. I had a 320 rated set of Falkens beforehand and they lasted 22k.
"inflated" get it?
