Marcus, thank you for this video. Very informative. I recently got my hands on a GH5 with the G X Vario 12-35mm lens and I'm really enjoying learning how to use it.
You’re welcome, and thank you as well. I’m glad you’re enjoying your GH5, ice been wanting another camera…. Been thinking about another Sony, but I can get a used GH5 for a great price….. tempting. Anyway, cheers!
Hi there Draz. Thank you. Yep, the GH5 is still great. I do prefer my 1.4 prime lenses though for more shallow depth of field. But, still use my GH5 all the time, and I really prefer full-frame for a lot of things.....mainly because I really like shallow depth of field, but, man, it's just hard to beat the GH5 on so many levels, even with newer cameras. And with those 1.4 primes the GH5 comes pretty close. And I have a harder time color grading or fixing the color from my Sony A7iii......the GH5 image comes out beautifully and I don't have to do much to it. And, as I said, it's one of the cameras I own, and it's great, so there's no reason I can't make great content with it! Cheers.
@@MarcusHutsell really appreciate your comments sir. I am hunting for GH5 right now.. hope to find a good one..wish me luck sir. Thank you for everything
I use also a GH5 as it was the camera I had for other purposes, and your points explain the reasons why it is not perfect but still more useable than other options. 6:10 about the image app, it is really convenient and I have used it when placing the camera in inaccessible locations ... BUT you cannot use it when using the HDMI output .... and this is a major drawback if you need to monitor or feed the image to your computer. Focusing remains a major problem, as for some reason, even if I use manual focus, when I turn on the camera after a while, it has gone out of focus and I have to refocus every time .... and as I have the camera a bit far away, it is not the simplest task. The GH5 has a good stabilisation and you can shoot video handheld and in movement with an interesting result (but that is not for self filming on UA-cam)
Hi there Blas! Sorry I've been out of touch, the fall was very busy and, work and my own videos seemed to take all my time! And, actually, yes, you CAN use the mobile app while using the HDMI output, I do it all the time. The camera-screen will black out because the GH5 will only allow 2-video outputs.....so you get either the Camera-Screen+HDMI (with no app connected), or if you do have the app connected, you can have Camera-Screen+App, or HDMI+App. It definitely does work with this way. The main thing I don't like about the app is that it doesn't show audio meters, so, I always have to set my audio with the camera-screen so I can see the meters. Or, if I do hook up an external monitor, the audio will pass through to the monitor and I can view/see/listen to audio from the monitor. And you can't make minor adjustments to the while balance, like dialing in the color a little more, but, not a huge deal for me because I can still do almost everything else I need to do, even put the camera in a different frame rate or codec. As far as losing focus when you turn the camera off/back on, 2 things: 1. There is a setting in the menu which will remember the focus point after a power-cycle, it's located in: Menu > then the C/Wrench Icon > Lens/Others > Page 6 of 7 > Lens Position Resume, turn it on. And this should save the memory of the lens-focus position when you turn the camera off/back on. 2. However, this "memory" of lens position is lost if you remove the battery. But it seems to hold that memory as long as it senses a battery or an AC adapter, handy if you're doing several takes and want to turn the camera on/off between shots, but, yeah, have to refocus if I completely remove the power source from the battery compartment. I also bought the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 M.Zuiko Pro lens because it has a manual focus clutch option and if you use the manual focus clutch on THAT lens. It can be used in autofocus and you can remotely focus it using the app, but, when you switch the clutch on that lens to it's full-manual setting, it's no longer "focus by wire" and once you set the focus position, the camera no longer has any control, so it will hold it's position forever because it's completely manual, all in-lens. But again, CAN be focus-by-wire if you put the manual focus clutch in that position. It's a great lens, although it actually is quite a bit warmer than all my other Panasonic lenses,.......I've estimated about 600 Kelvin difference, so, I just know that if I use that lens and cool down the white balance. But yeah, still a great great camera! Cheers!
Video seems to have matured as far as large advances. Im also happy with my gh5 and i also use a canon c100ii. Buying used will also help save a few bucks.
Yep, still use my GH5 daily! I haven't ventured into the Canon world.........yet..... I have gotten fairly familiar with Sony Cinema cameras over the past couple of years, using them a lot for work for live broadcasts and videography, etc. Still haven't played with much canon gear, maybe one day :)
Just coming across this video. I have seen other videos like. I have the GH5 and often feel those who had it then sold it never used it to its fullest. Most camera users do this. Those who use it for its fullest often say its a beast of a camera and if you're happy to be behind the camera then its a camera that will last you a long long time.
Agreed!! I still love the image that comes directly out of my GH5, using just the "Natural" Photo style (so, I"m NOT using V-Log and color-grading)......just using the image mostly as-is with a bit of tweaking in post, but very little. I have a MUCH harder time liking, or getting colors looking good with my Sony cameras. I love my Sony Cameras too, but, my GH5 is still my main A-Camera for my youtube stuff. Still hard to beat it!
Hi Marcus. first of all, great video! I made a similar video about the GH5. I still use it. I prefer using my Sony for "UA-cam", not because of the autofocus, but I like the noise free image I get in my studio. But I use the GH5 mostly for 4K60fps slowmotion b-roll.
Hi there. Thank you! Yeah, I do use both of my cameras here in my studio, and I totally prefer the (usually) more shallow-depth-of-field look I can get from my a7iii, and so I do go back and forth. I even bought the Panasonic 12mm 1.4 just to get the shallowest (almost) depth of field AND as low of noise (ISO)> as I could, and I really love that lens. But yeah, I've learned to try to stick to 400 or 500 ISO on the GH5.....used to use my Panny 12-60 (f2.8) and had to be around 800-1000 ISO and yeah, that didn't look great! Aaaaanyway, at least I'm learning every day. I should probably use the 4k 60 on the gh5 more often, I have been forgetting its there! Thanx again, happy filming :)
Just got a gh5 and the image app seems hard to connect to sometimes. Also having to get up and manual focus every day is a pain. Any advice on how to make this easier ?
Hi there. Yes, those are definitely both things about the GH5 that we just have to put up with. I've generally gotten my GH5 and the wifi/app to connect almost every time. But I have experienced it dropping the connection here-and-there. But usually when I'm sitting at my desk (like I am in most of my videos here on UA-cam), the app stays connected and rarely drops. And yes, it is a pain to do manual focus all of the time. It's just one of those things about Panasonic (up until now) that every GH5 user has to do and put up with. But, I still use my GH5 daily. I have a 12mm lens (24mm "equivalent" field of view) and with my 12mm lens, AND because I'm 6' tall and my arms are relatively long (so my wife says), I can just reach the focus ring most of the time while NOT moving my face/head much from where I need the lens to focus. So, if I NEED to manually focus without the app......I can do it when I use the 12mm lens......but just barely. This is also why I'm a bit excited about the release of the S5 Mark II that just came out, because Panasonic just changed their autofocus system to phase-detect and (supposedly) it's great now.......we'll see. But, as I said in my video, the GH5 is what I have, and I still REALLY like the image that comes out of the camera without having to really do much to it in post. And that's the case pretty much any time I use the GH5 whether it's for my personal UA-cam videos, or when I take it out and use it at work for live-streams or videography recordings, etc. And when I use it for work I'm almost ALWAYS going to want to manually focus anyway (think green-screen recording and/or studio-style work), and in those situations I do NOT want autofocus on ANY camera to be engaged. So, I don't have a solution to the app-connection-dropping-etc, it does frustrate me some days when it just takes 5 mintues to connect, it certainly can kill the creative vibe, but, I almost always do get it connected and press-on. The other thing to note is this: If you get your focus set (even using the app), if you turn the camera on/off, the focus will STAY in the same place IF you go to the menu and turn on "Lens Position Resume." That setting is in the "c-Wrench" icon, "Lens/Others," page 6 of 7, "Lens Position Resume," set it to "on." Then if you turn the camera OFF and back on, it will hold the last focus position. However, if you remove the battery or the dummy-battery the camera will "forget" the focus position and you'll have to re-focus. It's kind of like the GH5 senses and/or uses a small amount of voltage from the battery or dummy battery all of the time and the "Lens Position Resume" seems to get affected when ALL power is removed (even if the camera is OFF). So, this method works well for me since I have my GH5 on AC-power using a dummy battery almost all of the time.......as long as the dummy battery doesn't get unplugged from the power strip and my GH5 has had some sort of power (again, even if the camera is off), then I can (mostly) be assured my focus is in the same place. All right, that was a long reply, I hope some of that was helpful. Happy Recording!
I still have my GH5 that I bought in May 2018. Back then I also had the GH4 which I sold in October 2019 and that half funded a new G9 (because I am a Photo and Video guy) and I was content with my cameras but I built up a varied assortment of lenses and eventually a used Atomos Ninja V . . . . . And there was peace throughout the land. I imagined I would upgrade to the GH6 and keep the G9 (which had received major Firmware updates) but then the delay to the GH6 was announced and (simultaneously) an announcement that the GH5s would be able to record 12 bit Pro Res RAW to my Ninja 5!! OK new plan; buy a used GH5s and stick with that (GH5, G9, GH5s) combo until at least 2023 🤷🤷
Yeah man, awesome. I "accidentally" got into the Panasonic world when a guy at the local camera store plunked down a G9 in front of me 3 years ago when I was looking to get my first real, interchangeable lens camera. I didn't know enough about larger cameras at the time, sensor size/lens differences, so I went for it. It was great in many ways, but I was disappointed in many ways as well, I think I was really looking for that full-frame (ability to have shallow depth of field) look, and I was having a hard time getting it with the G9....but I then learned how great of a video camera it was too.......and eventually sold it to get a GH5 b/c of some more of those pro features I talk about in this video. But kept all my lenses and I've been happy ever since. I totally like what I see in the new Sony A7iv, but.......I'm still a fan of being a great craftsman with one's tools. I also recently got a Ninja V, so now I can use my Sony A7iii WITH face detection on and record externally. A pricey piece of equipment just so I can see myself with my current Sony Camera, but, it works great, and I have no REAL need to upgrade, just gotta keep pumping out that content. There's definitely a fine-line between staying current and competitive with fellow photographers and videographers or just relying on trusted gear, despite the lack of good autofocus (GH5), but,.........it's what I got, just gotta keep my urge to get that new A7iv at bay for a while!! Cheers!
