Iv just ended up using 5d mk1, mk2 and mk3 for photos, they’re between £100-£280 and I think take far more filmic pictures than the newer systems. Those and a pocket 4k make a great cheap set for video and photos
D7000 user here, and there is a few cons I can think of : first, the buffer is pretty limited. Like super limited. If you're shooting RAW of any kind to any card, you have a buffer of 8 shots, which at 6fps shooting is like 1.3 seconds. And the card slots aren't fast, so you need to wait a little bit to be able to shoot again so it's clearly not the best camera for sports or anything like that. Another thing that would go towards this is the autofocus system. The 39pt system is not super accurate in general. The D7000 and the D600/610 were the only cameras that were in the mid/high end to use it and it was quickly phased out of those bodies for several reasons : first, compared to the more advanced (but older, surprisingly) 51pt AF system, the tracking features isn't anything to write home about, it's very frequently loosing the subject you selected with 3D trackign and drifts off to the background while the 51pt system just stays on target. Second thing is that it's much less precise than the 51pt system as far as crossed type AF points go. The margin of error is much wider leading to a lot more front or back focused images. Worse than that, the AF itself can drift and required you to send back the camera to Nikon for a re-calibration. It can happen, I have seen online plenty of D7000 that got that issue, so far mine doesn't. But that's definitely something to keep in mind when buying those guys used. Overall, the D7000 is a very good camera, and the sensor still holds up today very well. In this price range, if sports and wildlife are a priority, looking at the D300 or D300S isn't that bad of an idea. I got one, and it's such a world of difference having that accurate AF that tracked well, fast 8fps burst rate and deep buffer even for RAW files (I think I can get around 20RAWs? With a faster CF card too !). The 12MP sensor in the D300 isn't as nice as the 16MP one in the D7000, but it's honestly not too far. D7000 beats it on high ISO performance though
I am on the same boat and I seem to have fairly similar experiences using the Nikon D7000 and its cons. Especially with its autofocus that seems to just drift especially in low light situation, or just suddenly back or front focus. For still and slow moving subjects the autofocus is fine and manageable
Shot the D7000 for years and didn't have any issues with auto focus at all. And the buffer never filled at 8 for me either. It would slow around 12, but rarely ever went that far and I was shooting action with the military for all the 350,000+ shutters on my D7000.
Amen. Had the same AF issues. Fanboys will quickly tell you, they never had issues, but I had 3 copies & all 3 did the same. Shot with my D90 & had no issues with it. However, that 16mp sensor of the D7000 was a beauty. If only Nikon put the 51 point AF system in the D7000. Or if they brought out a D400 in a D300 type body with that sensor. And yes, the buffer wasn't great, so I don't know how someone can claim they got 12 shots. Perhaps in jpeg, but definitely not in RAW. That said, the buffer on the D7100 was even worse.
I have not used it myself. However, the Canon Rebel T4i or 650D can use magic lantern and is supported by the latest crop mood build which is regarded as significantly more stable than other builds and provides real time preview. Magic lantern can shoot up to 14-bit raw. Also, "I made it here."
I’m just starting to think about upgrading from shooting video on iPhone, and this was very helpful! I don’t know anything about cameras, so it was informative to just listen to you talk through all of the features and give pros and cons. Keep up the good work!
The Pentax K50 or K30 can be found for under $200. Both are weather sealed, 16 MP cameras. They both shoot 1080 P video, though it’s only adequate. Both have built in image stabilization so work with any lenses mounted on them. Great photo cameras. If you get one though, make sure it has the solenoid fixed.
I just bought a K-30 for $175. Also picked up a 35-80mm lens for $20. Nice outfit for less than $200. Being that I’m a novice in DSLR photography, for me this was a nice entry camera. I have a Pentax K-1000 I bought 40+ years ago (still have it) and loved it, so I thought I’d go with Pentax again. I also thought I might want to dabble with some film photography (just for fun) and want to use lenses that work with both cameras.
Great video - I switched my old D3100 for the Sony A5000 just over a year ago and absolutely love the small size of it. There's a custom firmware available that gives more recording options than stock (and removes individual recording time limit). A small correction to the review - you can preview the shot via the phone app and remote zoom/ trigger which could come in handy in some circumstances. You can also use a remote flash if needed - I picked up a cheap aliexpress rig for using this 'on the camera' if I really need it as well.
I have a $2,000 camera and have no idea why I love watching these videos. 😅 It is amazing how much you can get out of a super cheap used camera these days if you don't have really niche needs.
I bought my Nikon D7000 last fall from KEH Camera. Heartily recommend both the camera and KEH. They are who I purchase all my second-hand gear from, now.
The Olympus em5 is also a very good choice for just a bit more cash, and has the side sdcard you like to see, ibis, water seals, a great evf built in, and looks and feels like a classic. I've loved my em5ii to pieces and am probably going to get another for a backup soon. Another old oly that ranks on this list is the pen mini, I have a pm2 I use as a work bag camera. It lacks the flip out screen but is very pocketable with many of the smaller m43 lenses.
So happy I found this video! I am starting my YT channel this year, which is best for taking about 15-20 min videos & then editing them on the Movavi software?
I think for Pentax, a better choice may have been the K-5. That was a 16MP flagship camera in 2010 that is commonly cited as a Pentax classic, with better high-ISO perormance and more manual controls to eliminate the need for menu-diving, weather sealed, and 1080p/25fps video with a microphone jack. While it's a bit harder to find under $200, I saw multiple good examples on eBay for less than that, and the lenses are cheap as well. I think a $20-30 premium over the K-r does get you a noticeably better camera. That said, this is really nice evaluation and comparison video at a price point that people who want to get into photography won't balk at. I think so many photographers are so used to paying thousands of dollars for good equipment that it seems like the word "cheap" loses its meaning, but you've shown that there are some truly excellent cameras within almost everyone's reach.
@08:55 [the Nikon D7000] can _...record 1080P video @ 24fps...so same video capabilities as the Sony A5000..._ Not quite. While the D7000 is limited to 24 fps, the A5000 can shoot up to 60fps @ 1080.
EDIT: i was a little abrassive and forgot to mention that i still appreciate the effort that went into finding 5 actual budget cameras. thanks for the vid! forgot to mention that the F mount on nikon will take ANY glass made since the 1960's until today. nikon does no artificially limit you in which series of lenses you can use..as such the lens selection should be a smidge larger than the "hundreds and hundreds" of E-mount lenses for the Sony. also, don't compare an APS-C 2014 12mpx sensor to a today's FULL FRAME 12mpx sensor. there are, in fact a few differences between the two of them..
Nikon d700 and Canon 5d mk1 are great budget professional full frame cameras!! They got the best color science vs all those cameras you showed. Only problem is they are pure photo cameras. No video is incorporated in those full frame cameras.
Yup happily watched it all! I'd like to have YOUR opinion on the Canon 200D/250D! I got a 200D because it was recommended as a beginner UA-cam camera! AND initially I was annoyed that the 250D came quite soon after the 200D - massive FOMO on 4K - until I heard that 4K filming ADDED ADDITIONAL CROP factor!
The T4i is a great budget cinema camera that can shoot 5k with Magic Lantern crop mood and I would argue that it's an even better option than the EOS M. Hope you make a video of this! 😊 Also, the Pentax K-r is good but there are better Pentax options out there. Try the K-5 for starters. Once you hold one, you'll never look back. Pentax's weakness is always videos.
I doubt in the Olympus EP-L line. L stands for “light” so very stripped down range. For these settings most the Pen EP range has Super settings, button mapping. So do the Olympus OM-D E-M10/5/1 tiers.
I actually kept my D300s & sold my D7200. Such a pity Nikon never gave us a D400 with the D7000 sensor in a D300s type body & the 51 point AF system of the D300s. That would have been a huge hit
people forget 4k is only 8.3mp mp stands for million pixels so if you take a 20mp photo and pull it up on a 4k display the file is more pixels then your display can show and phones are nice for those quick snaps of "oh nice flower, let me snap it and look it up after my hike," then I take my DSLR and get a really good photo of it and adjust the colors how I like on a rainy day.
Hey! I'm just getting into sports videography and I'm considering the canon t4i. I know this sounds stupid, but is there a lens needed or something or is it just 150$ flat. Again, just beginning.
Hi, I am new to photography. I am using an borrowed Nikon D3500, now would like to have my own camera. My budget is between $300-$400. Please suggest some models. (I primarily take photos during my seasonal trips and some street photographs.)
Great video. I'm a beginner filmmaaker and the webseries on my channel is shot with the Canon T3i. I love the soft look especially compared to smartphone video.
Foxtw - Sony 5000! You claimed that the camera could not film with higher resolution than 1089/24 - YET AT: 1m31s the screen shot says: "4k 120p, 10-bit 4:2:2 internal!" - seems like impressively capable for Video! I'm just pointing out that for continuity. EXCELLENT video though! Thank you! Keep up the good work! Live well! Swedish Bob
You want a even cheaper camera? Get a G1 for your photography, I own one adapted with a Pentax K Manual lens 28mm for street photography, Easily my cheapest and best setup.
Amazing! Although I'm finding it a bit hard for me to decide. I'm a beginner birdwatcher and want to purchase a camera, which of these would you best suggest?
Go m43 (micro four thirds). As it is a smaller sensor than the 35mm film equivalent cameras (wrongly called Fullframe by some YT idiots back in the day, which has stuck since), it allows smaller lenses, to achieve the same reach. I.e 45mm for m43 = 90mm fullframe. My advice (depending on your budget): take an “ OM-D E-M1 mark 1 or mark 2 (even the smaller OM-D E-M5 mark 1 or 2) and a cheap lightsaber Olympus 40-150mm f4-5.6 plastic fantastic lens. It’ll help you start your journey for wildlife/bird photography on a budget, as it’ll give you a 80-300mm range for a real small footprint (with so much organic character in terms of image) . The E-M1 or E-M5 cameras have stabilised sensors, great burst mode, it’ll compensate the non stabilised lens.
Seems like of all the videos I’ve watched, canon is doing the best for beginners. My only issue with at that is I already own a canon (eos rebel) t3i and it has had issues from the beginning. Amazing camera but it automatically stops recording randomly for random durations of time and I’m trying to record video only. And that’s apparently an issue with the t#i canons.
👁 made it here! 👁really like the Canon T4i with Nikon D7000 close runner up. I’m looking for a solid camera to shoot pro dance video, cinematic vlogs, and nature photography. The size of the canon seems sensible without loosing this functional entry feature like battery and SD Access, flash etc. Thank you for such a thorough review on these cameras 📷 I learned so much and feel more confident before purchasing!
I tried to sell my Nikon D810 in FM Marketplace about 8 months ago. I gave a fair price of $750 which is a bargain, much better price than Ebay or KEH Camera. No takers, I was like WTH? Guess everyone wants mirrorless now. Not a giant, heavy tank like the D810. Oh well, just decided to keep it. It is probably for the better.
For photography older cameras are extremely good. All sony a5xxx and a6xxx cameras with good lens are great. No eye focus needed if you know what you are doing. Photography cameras are only got better like with video options. All of those can create images that you cant say what camera was used.
Are there any good second hand cameras i can find for about under 200 euro? My current phone has a very good camera for close range but I'm looking for one i can use for those far shots of birds or animals and things like that
Made it this far and enjoyed 👍🏾 I was wondering if the Lumix GX80/85 would feature. I picked mine up around 2 years ago for £250 (UK) and was thinking it would be down to the $200 limit by now. Great content and will subscribe
@FoxTailWhipz I like your content, but can I ask you a question? My copy of Nikon d7000, d5500, d800 from MPB all suffers from the back or front focus issue. I read online it seems common for that era, but the earlier models like D200 D90 does not has this issue. What’s yours opinion here?
I didn't have the D800 or D5500, but I did go to the D7000 from the D90. The AF was imho a step backwards from the D90. Yes there were more points, but the system wasn't as reliable as the D90. And in low light it was terrible. I hated it. Loved the sensor of both the D90 & D7000 (more so the D7000), but hated the QC & the AF
A camera that I would like to see in the next edition of this video would be the Nikon D3300. It is a really cheap camera and also the latest Nikon d3000 series that has a microphone port and also records in 1080p 60fps
You can sometimes find the T5i for cheaper than the T4i. Is there a reason why I've been seeing a lot of camera channels recommending the T4i and not the T5i when I've seen it cheaper?
I don't know at what point cameras lied about their specs It is one of the thing that I like about older cameras they didn't interpolate the size of the photos back then if a camera had a 10 mega pixel sensor that would be the maximum file size for photos But these days you have cameras that advertise them capable of taking 40 mp pictures and when you look into it you find out that worst case scenario the camera has a 5mp sensor or if you are lucky an 8mp sensor with the rest being pure fakery via software
I believe you can use terminal client session to over write something on the a5000 or a5100 to accomplish this. Don't hold me to that but I feel like I remember it well
I have owned lots of cameras. My advice for people on a budget is to get an Olympus EPL 5/7 or an EM10 with the kit lens or a 25mm f1.8 lens from Panasonic or Olympus. That's a $200 camera that takes great images and can be carried in a jacket pocket. Don't have that much money? For $100 you can get a Canon SL1/100D with the USM kit lens and it does everything you need, also it's fun to use. I also enjoy carrying a Sony RX100 M1 or a Nikon D7100, but the Sony is flimsy while the Nikon is large and heavy. The M43 system is the best compromise between price, quality and portability, also the available lens are very good and cheap.
I am a Sony user, but of the bunch, I would say the Canon. It was designed as a starter DSLR, so its user-interface is going to make the experience easier/better, and there are plenty of budget lenses available, especially given that Canon had the lion's share of the DSLR market (which are reasons to avoid the Pentax and Olympus cameras; you will be more limited in selection of lenses, and you will pay more as well).
@@luckyhobbit8894 Keep in mind that the five cameras on this list are but one man's opinion, and that depending on what you want to use a camera for, it is possible there may be better choices. Perhaps you don't even want or need an interchangeable lens camera, and may be satisfied with a compact or fixed-lens type.
Great video and information, small prices for good cameras. Esp. with the great variety of lenses which are offered by most of the companies. Down to earth, like it !!
You're overstating the adapability of DLSR lenses to the A5000. SLR lenses, yes. DSLR, not so much. Maybe Canon and certainly Minolta, not so much anything else. But any mirrorless camera will support pretty much any SLR mount.
I’m still seeing the T4i going for around the $400 mark. Most likely due to the interest because it’s on the list of cameras that can be modded through magic lantern.
I want to get started with Sony e mount and your suggestion helped make up my mind where to start. My two a200 and a500 are a mount. Thanks I subscribed also.
I use a Canon ELPH 190 IS to take my pictures. I can only use one hand so it is easy to use and it takes excellent pictures better than what I've seen on smart phones . I would never buy a camera with a touch screen because it is too hard to handle and that is why I hate smart phones.
As a VFX artist I have to say that most of these cameras have terrible rolling shutter artifacts in the videos that they take, unless the camera's movement is really slow or minor.
Salute! Good choices, all. Been subscribed for years, always learn something -- thanks👍 An a5000 with OSS kit lens for 200 bones will get you started, endless hours of fun. Cheers

It’s crazy how the prices have gone up since this video
Great video - I switched my old D3100 for the Sony A5000 just over a year ago and absolutely love the small size of it. There's a custom firmware available that gives more recording options than stock (and removes individual recording time limit). A small correction to the review - you can preview the shot via the phone app and remote zoom/ trigger which could come in handy in some circumstances. You can also use a remote flash if needed - I picked up a cheap aliexpress rig for using this 'on the camera' if I really need it as well.
I have a $2,000 camera and have no idea why I love watching these videos. 😅
It is amazing how much you can get out of a super cheap used camera these days if you don't have really niche needs.
I bought my Nikon D7000 last fall from KEH Camera. Heartily recommend both the camera and KEH. They are who I purchase all my second-hand gear from, now.
The way he said he put so much time in making this video, I subscribed.
I think so many photographers are so used to paying thousands of dollars for good equipment that it seems like the word "cheap" loses its meaning, but you've shown that there are some truly excellent cameras within almost everyone's reach.
the fn d7000! you love to see it. such a fun cam. built like a tank. dual card slots. a beast. great vid fam
I wouldn't exactly say built like a tank. It's certainly no D300 or D700.
@08:55 [the Nikon D7000] can _...record 1080P video @ 24fps...so same video capabilities as the Sony A5000..._
Not quite. While the D7000 is limited to 24 fps, the A5000 can shoot up to 60fps @ 1080.
made it to the end, great informative video, thanks! I'm only starting to get into photography so I wanna educate myself before buying anything
Watching from Nigeria 🇳🇬 ❤️
Canon Camera with Crop mood is highly encouraged for review......!
I keep seeing Panasonic G7's for around 200 CAD (paid 160 CAD for mine), with the kit lens. That would be a stonkin' good cam for this video.
WHich one do you think is the best one
So which one is the best of the 5
EDIT: i was a little abrassive and forgot to mention that i still appreciate the effort that went into finding 5 actual budget cameras. thanks for the vid!
forgot to mention that the F mount on nikon will take ANY glass made since the 1960's until today. nikon does no artificially limit you in which series of lenses you can use..as such the lens selection should be a smidge larger than the "hundreds and hundreds" of E-mount lenses for the Sony. also, don't compare an APS-C 2014 12mpx sensor to a today's FULL FRAME 12mpx sensor. there are, in fact a few differences between the two of them..
Nikon d700 and Canon 5d mk1 are great budget professional full frame cameras!! They got the best color science vs all those cameras you showed. Only problem is they are pure photo cameras. No video is incorporated in those full frame cameras.
The 5D mark I is an awesome camera!
@@FoxTailWhipz nah the 5d mk1 and D700 are both awesome cameras.
Agree, both awesome, but once you got them, you need glass that will bring the best out of them
Best channel on the youtube!
Also, the Pentax K-r is good but there are better Pentax options out there. Try the K-5 for starters. Once you hold one, you'll never look back. Pentax's weakness is always videos.
Interested to hear your opinion on Pentax K-X, I myself can't keep track of all the nuances...
Fujifilm X-T1 ❤
On olympus you could turn on (what we call it?) A superuser settings? That could enable focus peaking, button mapping, and any other settings..
I doubt in the Olympus EP-L line.
L stands for “light” so very stripped down range.
For these settings most the Pen EP range has Super settings, button mapping.
So do the Olympus OM-D E-M10/5/1 tiers.
Excellent video 😮
I still use a Nikon D300s which I have had for years. My favourite lens is the 24mm 2.8 AFD. I love it.
I actually kept my D300s & sold my D7200. Such a pity Nikon never gave us a D400 with the D7000 sensor in a D300s type body & the 51 point AF system of the D300s. That would have been a huge hit
Cool video. Great to see Pentax get some love. I shoot with a K5 IIs and an Olympus EM 5 Mark 2.
I don't know anything about photography, but I would like to learn, this video has come at the right time for me, thanks a lot!
people forget 4k is only 8.3mp mp stands for million pixels so if you take a 20mp photo and pull it up on a 4k display the file is more pixels then your display can show and phones are nice for those quick snaps of "oh nice flower, let me snap it and look it up after my hike," then I take my DSLR and get a really good photo of it and adjust the colors how I like on a rainy day.
My guy did it again 👏🏿🇯🇲 love seeing your videos pop up man
I rather a Nikon 600-700 or even a Nikon D7100 for similar prices. Even the Canon 5D mk 2 can be had for close to this and they are full frame...
bro ..a7s3 is for video. It has only 12 MP because each MP is bigger thus beeing brighter!
Great video, should also mention Fujifilm X-Pro1. From 2012. I still use it and have made a youtube video about it.
Live well!

What are the most economical cameras that are not used?
I just got a A5000 for $80 and Im amazed with it for the price so far.
That Nikon takes absolutely beautiful photos ngl
Should i pick nikon d5100 or nikon d7000?
For photography older cameras are extremely good. All sony a5xxx and a6xxx cameras with good lens are great. No eye focus needed if you know what you are doing. Photography cameras are only got better like with video options. All of those can create images that you cant say what camera was used.
I recent purchased the Olympus pl5, it has been great for an everyday camera. I am wanting to get the Pentax K-r in some color variation next.
Are there any good second hand cameras i can find for about under 200 euro?
My current phone has a very good camera for close range but I'm looking for one i can use for those far shots of birds or animals and things like that
i bought my a5100 brand new and sealed with one year warranty and kit lens for 311 USD in December 2023.
Thanks for the video, that said you spent a lot of time on the Sony 8000. It's a shame with the flip screen it's not better for video.
What was that other camera he was recording on the Nikon d7000? I like it
Sony a5000 on top
T4i/650D is magic lantern compatible, even better for recording than what was shown here still great video 😁
Thx why think about a NIKON D5200 THAT'S WHAT I STILL HAVE WILL IT DO A GOOD JOB FOR MUSIC VIDEO
Made it this far and enjoyed 👍🏾
I was wondering if the Lumix GX80/85 would feature. I picked mine up around 2 years ago for £250 (UK) and was thinking it would be down to the $200 limit by now.
Great content and will subscribe
What is the app called so I download the pics on my phone
Great options. I'd recommend the Fujifilm XE2 and XE2s for a Fujifilm option. Crap video but has a viewfinder. Great image quality. Super-compact.
Pretty sure you can't find a decent one for under $400.
Where would you place the Baby Ari Alexa in this category
is the Canon T4i compatible with magic lantern crop mood?
I don't know at what point cameras lied about their specs
It is one of the thing that I like about older cameras they didn't interpolate the size of the photos back then if a camera had a 10 mega pixel sensor that would be the maximum file size for photos
But these days you have cameras that advertise them capable of taking 40 mp pictures and when you look into it you find out that worst case scenario the camera has a 5mp sensor or if you are lucky an 8mp sensor with the rest being pure fakery via software
For me, I would get the Nikon d700 or the Nikon d5200 those two I’ve been using since I was 10
Any of these good for streaming with a clean hdmi out? Best camera for streaming under $250/500 video?
Soooo which one of these would you recommend for someone getting their first camera?
I am a Sony user, but of the bunch, I would say the Canon. It was designed as a starter DSLR, so its user-interface is going to make the experience easier/better, and there are plenty of budget lenses available, especially given that Canon had the lion's share of the DSLR market (which are reasons to avoid the Pentax and Olympus cameras; you will be more limited in selection of lenses, and you will pay more as well).
@@trekkeruss thanks! I'm going to look into that canon.
Could you compare it with an iPhone or a Samsung coma pistón va these cameras?
Great video and information, small prices for good cameras. Esp. with the great variety of lenses which are offered by most of the companies. Down to earth, like it !!
Thank you!
what do you recommend for plane spotting
Micro four thirds. Greater reach for smaller camera bodies and especially lenses, with stabilised sensors, easier to handhold.
Canon EOS M would have been a good addition especially with the magic lantern hack
You're overstating the adapability of DLSR lenses to the A5000. SLR lenses, yes. DSLR, not so much. Maybe Canon and certainly Minolta, not so much anything else. But any mirrorless camera will support pretty much any SLR mount.
Great video!!!!!!! Greetings from Brazil
What about canon eos 1300d with sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5?
What would be an amazing video camero on a budget? 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I would never buy a camera with a touch screen because it is too hard to handle and that is why I hate smart phones.
i checked the market in sweden today. The Nikon D7000 goes for $600 bucks!
Thank you for this video G
As a VFX artist I have to say that most of these cameras have terrible rolling shutter artifacts in the videos that they take, unless the camera's movement is really slow or minor.
Salute! Good choices, all. Been subscribed for years, always learn something -- thanks👍 An a5000 with OSS kit lens for 200 bones will get you started, endless hours of fun. Cheers
What about the Sony a58?
I love these videos. Thanks for posting it
Compré una nikon d7000 nueva y esto lo pasara sacarle todo el jugo 🤜🏼📸
Thank you.
I made it here!😉
