I had a sony 6300 and than I changed for gh5. Oh man, its a different world. So much better! Auto focus is a problem, but you can handle. Sony has advantage in iso, but the possibilities that you have in gh5, specially in 4k 10bits, makes the difference.
Great comparison- it’s amazing how long camera sensors go without much upgrades over years- I guess being used to new smart phone or cpu tech every year spoiled us! Great cameras, both of them
@ant billionz in a specific instance for low light shooting of course the bigger sensor helps. While budgeting constraints is a legit answer, why otherwise use an aps-c camera when you can go full frame for not much more at that point with either the A7iii or EOS R which will be significantly better for low light while still having the same great auto focus? End of the day of course, it is great you find a better camera for your specific need and it has helped you improve your work.
@ant billionz, we are currently looking to upgrade our old HC-V770 camcorder and, with a budget of~£1000, GH5, Sony A6500 or SonyA73 seem to be the main contenders. They GH5 and A6500 are both around £850, while A73 is £1200, so a big price difference. The main use of the camera would be creating promo clips for a music business, band/vocalist performances at bars and other venues (often with poor lighting), an occasional music video and also family/hobby cinematography. From what I gather, GH5 has way better stabilisaton and can film continuously longer without overheating, which are big benefits for videography?

@Kay I own 2 A7R3 and recently bought a GH5. In terms of videography the GH5 significantly outperforms Sony... It took me a few weeks to figure the correct settings for autofocus and now it can compete with Sony's. But half of the time I use manual focus to get the sweet spot. I don't know what you are talking about regarding dynamic range. But in post processing I can grade my GH5 footage however I like and colors stay clear. With the a7r3 I got issues when grading too much. 4:2:2 in 4k is simply superior. And I don't know why the 4k 60fps stays unmentioned. It is such convenient having this ability. After all I am delivering 4k more often and with a Sony a7r3 or a7iii I can not do that because it has just 4k 30fps. And all other aspects: IBIS, flip screen, more user friendly, better app... After all I am waiting for the A7S4 but sony community as well as I have enough of their annoying delays. I would throw an eye on the Canon R5 which is better than Panasonic S1 and could be the next beast in videography (depending on its costs...).
@@donnik7064 They just won't understand. Full sensor 4k 60 fps, ability to even do 5K video, anamorphic support, 10 bit video for the grading experience... This is all is not worth giving up for autofocus. it's just not.
Both amazing cameras, it's stabilization/4K60 (GH5) vs. autofocus/lowlight (A6600). Also for $200-300 less, G9 (which is 80% GH5 in terms of video specs) and the A6400 (A6600 minus IBIS which isn't that great) could be another option if you're a nonprofessional?

Hey Dad, we miss you over here in camera land. But even though you went over to the dark side, your camera reviews are still watched and appreciated. I just ordered the GH5 M2, so there are still people who value the GH5, even after the launch of the GH6. I have Sony cameras in addition to MFT, but they frustrate me as I love the video features in Panasonic. I currently have the G9 and it will become the stills powerhouse it is designed to be and the GH5 M2 will take over video production. Looking forward to the extra GH5 video goodies that you have been enjoying for a few years now. Thanks for this excellent comparison video.
Yes while your content tends toward not needing the autofocus. What would you actually take on a trip with the family? Does the 4K require an extra expense on the computer and memory card side that you wouldn’t have with a just recording in 1080p and framing all your shots properly?
Or you can buy full frame lenses for the a6600 and use them to their full capabilities on a full-frame Sony. I think you missed the strength of low-light capabilities of the a6600 over the GH5.
I am a Canon shooter looking to upgrade my camera for video purposes. For the past 3 weeks I rented the GH5s. I LOVE this camera! It really is amazing. I shot for 8 hours (off and on/small clips) and the battery NEVER DIED!! However, the lack of autofocus is enough for me to pass. It was the most infuriating thing to deal with during a shoot, especially when hooked up to a small rig or a gimbal. IMO there is not a perfect "1 size fits all camera" for both video and stills. I am getting my hands on a R5 in 2 weeks, the overheating should not affect how I shoot, but it is a concern. I also tried the EOS R and I wasn't a fan. Aside from the R5, I am going to give Sony a shot. Sorry Panasonic, your AF is TERRIBLE!!
Would love an updated reaction after you had a chance at the R5 and the Sony. Assuming you had the a64 or 6600 in mind? Heard you could get GH5's auto focus on par enough to compete with the Sony's, although I'm not sure how effective setting it manually all the time is going to be. Good and consistent focus is one of my main attraction points. (First time camera buyer). Also, I came across many praises for the EOS R. What did you not like about it?
@@DeanArviv The first few times you do manual focusing, it will be very stressful and difficult, but it gets better over time. If you need to shoot unscripted moving people (weddings, events), autofocus might be better, but I would still trust manual focus more. Never know when the focus might jump to another person. Even if it's a 1% chance of failure, it could be a hit to your business if a bride makes a huge issue cos you lost the shot. If you need to do sports videos, manual focus only because no AF system can keep up with both sports movement and camera movement at the same time. EOS R is a huge fail because of the 1.7x crop in 4k. There is also no upgrade path because the R5 and R6 both overheat. So you're locked into a dead RF mount system, unless you buy their cinema cameras which cost like $5500 for the cheapest RF C70. Most importantly, for any kind of videography job, buy a monitor. Andycine A6 Plus is a good one. Feelworld F6 Plus is the exact same, just different branding. You can always start with higher apertures like f/5.6 or f/4, and slowly work down as you get more confident. In some situations you don't even need f/2.8. For easier learning curve and future-proofing, I would honestly still suggest the a6600 or a6400. Autofocus is still a great help, and it's better to have it. Just keep in mind Sony's codecs are horrible. Like utter crap. So make sure you white balance properly, and don't bother shooting in log.
Captain JC Rage if the GH6 has PDAF I would switch back to Panasonic no questions asked! They could change nothing besides that and it would hands down be the best camera on the market.
@@TheEverydayDad I know right?!!!!! I bought the GH5 and sold it because with what I do I need the PDAF. currently using EOS R for vlogging. it has all the advantages of the GH5 plus the PDAF and the 1.7 crop on 4k is still less than the 2x crop factor of the M43 system so no issue there.

I ordered my a6600, thanks for link bought from BHP for $918 thanks to that student discount, total came out to $1,005. Always wanted a sony a6000 series camera. So I'm glad I got this deal. Very excited to shoot with. I want to shoot video of cars and a bit of photography. Did my research and I considering to get the Sigma 16mm 1.4. But what do you guys think. Let me know. Haha great minds think alike. I'm pretty invested into Panny stuff for video but been wanting a Sony for continuous autofocus so I can film clients walking past stuff and telling us how excited they are about this new project and so forth. : ) Currently experiencing a brief window of solvency so for once I can opt not to cheap out and work around everything. I like EOS-Ms too and they've jumped into dual pixel so I'm not entirely committed to Sony (suggestions on this welcome) but yeah, it's like you've got one near-perfect system and then the other to play shortstop for that one missing capability and you're golden. Nice vid, good information and judgments without a lot of filler, bravo. ETA I have to say THANK YOU for even a quick evaluation of the audio pre-amps in these bodies. I'm a one-man band and if I can get decent audio with single system that's huge to me. It's amazing how variably noisy or quiet pre-amps can be within one camera family and you have to test them to know.
Never never never use the official Panasonic v log L to Rec 709 Lut as its designed for true V LOG from its cinema cameras and not the GH4/5/S/G9 V LOG L. From my own testing the best fit and forget solution is ground controls free v log to 709 Lut. Trust me it's so much better.
I used to be a Panasonic fan boy but they have made it clear that they don't care about reliable autofocus which has me looking at the new canon cameras.
Hi everyday Dad, p[lease can you compare the Sony imaging app to the Panasonic image app on iOS. I've got the Panasonic but I'm clueless on how the Sony iOS app works.
Sony imaging app looks and feels outdated. It does not have almost no features that panasonic one has. Basically you can import files and thats it. You select files transfer on the camera! Not in the app! In 2020!
For any kind of sports/action, hands down only Sony. There exists no other camera system with a powerful enough autofocus for sports videography. Canon is good, but overheats, so there's no reliable upgrade path, unless you buy their cinema cameras. Nikon is behind the both of them. Probably good enough for photos, but videos I'm not sure about video. Panasonic. Don't even think about it, unless you have mastered manual focusing.

@@deabrv You're welcome. GH5 is a purely manual focus camera when it comes to video. No matter how much Panasonic tries to improve it, the nature and design of the algorithm means it will never be as good as Sony/Canon/Nikon which all use Phase detect in some way. Get the a6600. Sony's autofocus is only good after the a7iii was released (2018). So only the a7iii, a6400, and a6600 (under $2000) are reliable enough imo. Also, a6400/6600 has the latest autofocus tech which is actually better than the a7iii because it's the same one used in the a7r4 and a9ii, both of which are pro level cameras. Older models like a7ii use contrast detect autofocus which is same as GH5 and is really bad. If budget is your main concern, the a6400 is a good consideration. You don't get eye tracking in video, but the face tracking is good enough. Battery life is weak, but the 3rd party NPW50 batteries are cheap. You'll need about 6 for a full day of shooting. To be honest, a6600 is getting close to full frame pricing. A7C is $1800, a6600 is $1400. I would rather pick the a6400 which is $900 personally, and slowly invest in full frame E-mount lenses. Maybe in 1-2 years upgrade to full frame.

I am new to photograph and have spent the last week trying to find the ideal camera for me, initial looking at the Nikon D5600 but this is not capable of 4k videos. I will be mainly for pictures but will be nice to have 4k, i am planning on buying a mavic mini and gopro 7 black in a couple of months to give video making a go, would like to get some milky way shots. Any suggestions for under $1000 that will still be relevant in a year or two years and minimum 20MP? A6400, x-t30 and for some reason i am interested in the nikon D5600.
I hate to say it I was kind of trying to root for the G5 but then I'm really thinking about this if you have amazing auto focus why do you need the flip out screen. . . You still have the option for the flip out screen but you will need to add extra stuff when using microphone on top man this is a hard for me !
It's so haaaaaard. I want the high bitrate, great colour, tap to focus and stability of the gh5 but I also want the continuous eye af. I do music videos so both versions of focus are extremely important
The gh5 show grain in low light the a6600 is clear as day even when it’s super dark . I filmed a music video at night with only the city light and I got crystals clear footage. I couldn’t hardly see with my own eyes but when I looked on the lcd I seen the images well lit .

I've been looking to upgrade my panasonic g7 and g85 for a while. I'm sill trying to decide between the gh5 and a6600. The auto focus is leaning me towards sony for my gimbal shots at cosplay conventions. Damn maybe I need both!
The Sony is the answer just because of the system, micro four thirds is dead it's very unlikely that any camera beyond a Lumix gh6 comes out (if that camera comes out) and that's the end of the system, while Sony and the E mount are here to stay
Andres Carrasco how many lenses you need? Everything you need is already there. The newest one was the 10-25 1.7 and it is great. From superwide 7mm to to 300mm what else do you need?

Chase the Summit all pros on youtube say you shoul NEVER go above 6400 with the sony. I also saw a low light comparison son a6400 vs panasonic g9 (same sensors) and the result was that the sony is NOT much netter in low light it is noticable but not much. Another pro photographer on youtube said if he needds iso 5000 with a aony he would need 600+ with a mft sensor . So i guess your 300% better talk is crap. Even on a full frame sensor no one recommends going up to 12000 iso if you want your noise level low
What about low light video capabilities? I believe the bigger sensor on the A6600 would be better at low light video? Can you confirm or deny that estimation?
It doesn't differ by much. The dynamic range difference between APS-C and M43 is usually between half to 1 stop. It is better yes. But not a game changer. If you need low light, just go full frame, don't even waste money on APS-C/M43.
... said it before, the Sony wins because with pancake lens it will easily fit in my cargo pants’ pocket. I can go on vacation and not lug my 50lb canon kit.
The Everyday Dad true! ...But the problem (a great camera through) is the ‘prism’ on the Gh5 that makes the cargo pocket a no go and when I am in Hawaii or even strolling along in Florence I don’t want a shoulder strap bogging me down when I can get too notch video and stills from my pocket!
GH5 produces stunning images. However the autofocus is unuseable. It WILL ruin your footage. Consider the GH5 a manual focus camera for any serious work. 4K 60P looks amazing for stock video.
@Kay a beginner should not get this camera indeed. but for most types of shots where you are not talking into the camera and the camera is moving autofocus will also ruin most of your shots
I know it video is old now, but this is problem w e mouth ... it has to big lenses to APS-C system... Look of size fuji lenses. m4/3 has half of size of sony lenses and weight. It will only important if you have FF body, if not is more a problem than a solution.
Sony A6600 VS Panasonic GH5 | Is Autofocus REALLY Worth it? Yep. great AF is litteraly worth it weight in gold. Especialy when used in conjunction with the toggle MF/AF button. With a little practice you can get great results. HOWEVER in darker conditions you need to manual focus. I've not used an Auto Focus in any camera 'yet' that can focus 'reliably' in low light. And speeking of low light, I'm sure the Sony does better in one other small but crucial area ... hummmm ... what could that be? 🤷♀️
@@andrescarrasco1248 You are both half wrong. Out of focus - screwed, too shakey - try to stabilize it, fail, and have it look blurry as if it's out of focus anyways. You just have to be a smart videographer using any of them. It won't do miracles.
Better comparison would be between the X-T3 and the GH5... GH5 came out swinging for the fences all the way back in 2017! ... X-T3 came to the party in 2018...

Sony’s 4K rolling shutter is a deal breaker TBH And the IBIS on Sony isn’t really IBIS for video it’s more for photos in real world use.

I'm pretty invested into Panny stuff for video but been wanting a Sony for continuous autofocus so I can film clients walking past stuff and telling us how excited they are about this new project and so forth. : ) Currently experiencing a brief window of solvency so for once I can opt not to cheap out and work around everything. I like EOS-Ms too and they've jumped into dual pixel so I'm not entirely committed to Sony (suggestions on this welcome) but yeah, it's like you've got one near-perfect system and then the other to play shortstop for that one missing capability and you're golden. Nice vid, good information and judgments without a lot of filler, bravo.
ETA I have to say THANK YOU for even a quick evaluation of the audio pre-amps in these bodies. I'm a one-man band and if I can get decent audio with single system that's huge to me. It's amazing how variably noisy or quiet pre-amps can be within one camera family and you have to test them to know.
How's the stabilization with the 6600 for Vlogging? If you would to have to go for one lense, which one would you chose?
Never never never use the official Panasonic v log L to Rec 709 Lut as its designed for true V LOG from its cinema cameras and not the GH4/5/S/G9 V LOG L. From my own testing the best fit and forget solution is ground controls free v log to 709 Lut. Trust me it's so much better.

Hi everyday Dad, p[lease can you compare the Sony imaging app to the Panasonic image app on iOS. I've got the Panasonic but I'm clueless on how the Sony iOS app works.
Sony imaging app looks and feels outdated. It does not have almost no features that panasonic one has. Basically you can import files and thats it. You select files transfer on the camera! Not in the app! In 2020!
Does the GH5 have "unlimited" (13 hr) video duration? The A6600 does. That's one of the reasons I'm getting it. Plus, I already have a Sony A7 RII.

For any kind of sports/action, hands down only Sony. There exists no other camera system with a powerful enough autofocus for sports videography.
Canon is good, but overheats, so there's no reliable upgrade path, unless you buy their cinema cameras.
Nikon is behind the both of them. Probably good enough for photos, but videos I'm not sure about video.
Panasonic. Don't even think about it, unless you have mastered manual focusing.

@@deabrv You're welcome. GH5 is a purely manual focus camera when it comes to video. No matter how much Panasonic tries to improve it, the nature and design of the algorithm means it will never be as good as Sony/Canon/Nikon which all use Phase detect in some way.
Get the a6600. Sony's autofocus is only good after the a7iii was released (2018). So only the a7iii, a6400, and a6600 (under $2000) are reliable enough imo. Also, a6400/6600 has the latest autofocus tech which is actually better than the a7iii because it's the same one used in the a7r4 and a9ii, both of which are pro level cameras.
Older models like a7ii use contrast detect autofocus which is same as GH5 and is really bad.
If budget is your main concern, the a6400 is a good consideration. You don't get eye tracking in video, but the face tracking is good enough. Battery life is weak, but the 3rd party NPW50 batteries are cheap. You'll need about 6 for a full day of shooting.
To be honest, a6600 is getting close to full frame pricing. A7C is $1800, a6600 is $1400. I would rather pick the a6400 which is $900 personally, and slowly invest in full frame E-mount lenses. Maybe in 1-2 years upgrade to full frame.

I am new to photograph and have spent the last week trying to find the ideal camera for me, initial looking at the Nikon D5600 but this is not capable of 4k videos.
I will be mainly for pictures but will be nice to have 4k, i am planning on buying a mavic mini and gopro 7 black in a couple of months to give video making a go, would like to get some milky way shots.
Any suggestions for under $1000 that will still be relevant in a year or two years and minimum 20MP?

I hate to say it I was kind of trying to root for the G5 but then I'm really thinking about this if you have amazing auto focus why do you need the flip out screen. . . You still have the option for the flip out screen but you will need to add extra stuff when using microphone on top man this is a hard for me !

In vlogging situations gh5 af is not bad. I also use ththe app and the tap to focus feature a lot

It's so haaaaaard. I want the high bitrate, great colour, tap to focus and stability of the gh5 but I also want the continuous eye af.
I do music videos so both versions of focus are extremely important
The gh5 show grain in low light the a6600 is clear as day even when it’s super dark . I filmed a music video at night with only the city light and I got crystals clear footage. I couldn’t hardly see with my own eyes but when I looked on the lcd I seen the images well lit .

I've been looking to upgrade my panasonic g7 and g85 for a while. I'm sill trying to decide between the gh5 and a6600. The auto focus is leaning me towards sony for my gimbal shots at cosplay conventions. Damn maybe I need both!

The Sony is the answer just because of the system, micro four thirds is dead it's very unlikely that any camera beyond a Lumix gh6 comes out (if that camera comes out) and that's the end of the system, while Sony and the E mount are here to stay

you don't have to buy crop sensor e mount glass , full frame glass works very well .
Downside is that it's more expensive, bigger, heavier, and typically slower aperatures compared to APS-C versions like the Sigma 16mm f1.4.

Chase the Summit all pros on youtube say you shoul NEVER go above 6400 with the sony. I also saw a low light comparison son a6400 vs panasonic g9 (same sensors) and the result was that the sony is NOT much netter in low light it is noticable but not much. Another pro photographer on youtube said if he needds iso 5000 with a aony he would need 600+ with a mft sensor . So i guess your 300% better talk is crap. Even on a full frame sensor no one recommends going up to 12000 iso if you want your noise level low

It doesn't differ by much. The dynamic range difference between APS-C and M43 is usually between half to 1 stop.
It is better yes. But not a game changer. If you need low light, just go full frame, don't even waste money on APS-C/M43.

The Everyday Dad true! ...But the problem (a great camera through) is the ‘prism’ on the Gh5 that makes the cargo pocket a no go and when I am in Hawaii or even strolling along in Florence I don’t want a shoulder strap bogging me down when I can get too notch video and stills from my pocket!

GH5 produces stunning images. However the autofocus is unuseable. It WILL ruin your footage. Consider the GH5 a manual focus camera for any serious work. 4K 60P looks amazing for stock video.
@Kay a beginner should not get this camera indeed. but for most types of shots where you are not talking into the camera and the camera is moving autofocus will also ruin most of your shots

I know it video is old now, but this is problem w e mouth ... it has to big lenses to APS-C system... Look of size fuji lenses. m4/3 has half of size of sony lenses and weight. It will only important if you have FF body, if not is more a problem than a solution.
Sony A6600 VS Panasonic GH5 | Is Autofocus REALLY Worth it? Yep. great AF is litteraly worth it weight in gold. Especialy when used in conjunction with the toggle MF/AF button. With a little practice you can get great results. HOWEVER in darker conditions you need to manual focus. I've not used an Auto Focus in any camera 'yet' that can focus 'reliably' in low light.
And speeking of low light, I'm sure the Sony does better in one other small but crucial area ... hummmm ... what could that be? 🤷♀️

I believe it's otherwise of what you wrote. If it's shaky you can stabilize on post, but if it's out of focus you're screwed
