Many vintage machines have motors attached which are now well past their sell-by date. Rather than risk using an old electric motor, it is far better to convert the machine back to hand power - fortunately this machine still had the original handle kept with it. This video shows how easy it is to restore a machine to its original condition. The machine shown was manufactured in 1927 and has many years of useful life ahead of it.

Lizzie. You are the best. I love these old machines.

I know the video is from 10 years ago but thanks for the information, that's exactly what I was looking for! I have an old Singer very similar to the one you're showing here, pedal and everything, and was planning on removing the light+motor block as I'll soon be moving from the UK to the US so there's little point in having a 250V device 😌

I have this machine with the original table and it still works. The bulb is even good still. Built to last.

Thank you! The machine has now been oiled and tested - it sews perfectly.

Unfortunately, here in the States, original handcranks are few and far between. I have a reproduction for my Singer 128, and it does the job, but I long for a genuine Singer handcrank.

Shangas, Yes, it is the stitch length regulator. Screw clockwise (all the way in) for the longest possible stitch, then anti clockwise (outwards) to make it smaller. Try it out with no thread in the machine and just watch the movement of the feed dog teeth, then feed a piece of paper through the machine so you will see the difference in the perforations.

Hello Shangas, Any Singer that has a motor fixed on to a bracket at the side can have a hand crank attachment put on in its place. There is a hole for a large screw beneath the wheel on the side of the machine, which is where either the bracket or the handle is attached.
    Best of luck Muv

    Hello RhodeToPrepping,
There is a difference between restoring a machine to its original condition and converting it to a hand machine. This machine had had the handle removed and a motor attached. Fortunately the original handle was still with it, so I was able to restore it to its original condition. This was not a conversion.
If you want information on conversions I suggest you look at the Sew Classic website, but be aware that modern reproduction handles are not as good as originals.

Lizzie, you do fabulous work! Do you have a video on how to properly oil and maintain the 99K? Mine should be arriving shortly, and I want to be ready for her! Cheers!

Great video..... I have a question...I have a 185K and the light bulb does not work, and I need to remove the lens but I am following the manual pushing the lens and turning but nothing comes off so I can;t replace the light bulb, would you consider creating a video on how to replace the light bulb on the Singer 99... thanks so much for all of your help, excellent job...

Sorry Lourdes, I never use electric machines. As I said to Mcallister, I use a table lamp.

Hello, Watch the beginning of our video How to Clean and Oil a Vintage Sewing Machine Part 2 where I show how to remove the wheel - as it happened the wheel on that particular machine wouldn't come off, it was too tight! Just goes to show that old sewing machines can be a bit unpredictable sometimes.
    Best of luck Muv

Been wanting a human powered sewing machine. Have 2 sewing machines, plus a serger, but concerned what I could use if there was no power. I have my mother in-laws old Singer I was thinking of turning into a treadle. Watching your video, I am wondering could I turn it into a hand crank? So, If I understand you correctly if there is a motor attached at the back or side, my mother in-laws old machine can be switched out? Is that correct? Where would I get a handle? BTY, I appreciate this video.

Hello Mcallister, You are asking the wrong person. The first thing I would do would take the light off and use a table lamp. Muv

Hi, thanks for the video. I got a 191Y singer. They sold it saying it was hand cranked but theres a motor and no pedal nor a handle. I don't know if this was a hand cranked model in the first place or not.
Can I turn it into a handcrank one? Do the manufactured handles fit every model, or can I detach a non working Singer's handle and put it on this one?
And up until 4:38 the metal part at behind, where you put on the handle looks just like mine. But the next square where video is turned off and on, yours look like it has a small extension where you fix the handle. What is that? Is it among the parts that come out from the side box? Can i find it with the handle?

Hello Irem, I think your machine was manufactured as an electric machine and I would not recommend trying to convert it.
I suggest you read this link before considering doing any conversion.

Thank you. I'm trying to give it back. Turns out my grandmother already has a handcrank model singer in her closet. Lucky me:)
