Very thorough, clear and instructive video featuring an absolutely pristine example of a Singer 99K. When threading, I think it would be worthwhile to mention that the presser foot should be in the lifted position so that the pressure is released from the tension plates so that the thread easily slides fully between the the tension plates. Inadvertent failure to fully engage the thread between the tension plates is a common error that is made when threading a sewing machine.

In my singer 99K manual, it shows the bobbin being loaded opposite of what you are showing. The Tip I was taught was to hold the bobbin vertically in your right index finger and thumb with your thumb closest to your body. The thread should drop from the back and down the left side, it looks like the letter P. Place the bobbin in the bobbin case, maintaining the P look. when you pull the thread, it should turn counterclockwise

Of course, you are correct, Michelle. He installed the bobbin incorrectly. Too sad as he made a nice video and had great intentions to share. He also threaded the thread guide below the bobbin winder wrong. I did not watch more of the video. For those interested you can download A FREE copy of the Singer Instruction Manual for Model 99 at this page of the Singer Support website; www.singer.com/search/support?title=99 Just select the one about 1/2 way down the list "99 Sewing Machine". You have a good eye for detail, Michelle.

Andy, thank you for the confirmation about which way the bobbin should be placed in the bobbin case. As we all know mistakes are just opportunities for learning. I am very thankful for the videos that you and this gentleman and everybody else that shares their time and their knowledge and their experience with us how fortunate we are to have this resource 🤗

@@michellegutierrez5664 Sure thing. I admire the production values of his video and his presentation style, especially compare to my first videos he is miles ahead. I hope he continues b/c knowledge is power and I love that people are rescuing the old Singers and getting them back in service. Take care, Michelle.

I was quite disappointed. I was hoping this would be a good aide mémoire for a young lady I’m teaching using the same model and era machine. Then he doesn’t put the bobbin in correctly and negates all the good bits. Shame.

Thanks for the very educational video! You have made my nostalgic, yard sale purchase work like a charm. Your hand drawn diagram of how to thread the bobbin was very clear. Thanks again😊

We have two 99K's; one in the case you have and another in a cabinet. Both auction finds.
Hubby went through both of them and they are spectacular. And, YES, they like to be lubed!!

I have a 99k. I have the bobbin going counter clockwise. Also, there is a hole in that gooseneck to the left of the tension mechanism. The thread should go in that hole, otherwise the thread will break when you start to sew. Threading this way solved all my issues with my machine.

I think my 99 instruction booklet tells me to have the bobbin thread coming from right to left OVER the top of the bobbin as its facing you before you insert it. You can check this by pulling on the bobbin thread before you insert it and when you do this the bobbin turns counter clockwise.

Thank you for this helpful tutorial. I just acquired mine for $20 and it needs some work before use. Where did you order your parts from? Do you know of anyone who will refurbish them ( rather than just a tune up from my local singer dealer)?

While plastic class 66 bobbins will work just fine in this machine, I have found that some will not fit on the 99k’s bobbin winder. If I must use plastic bobbins with this, I fill them on a stand alone bobbin winder.

I'm having problems with my 99K again so watching tutorials. :) Yours is a bit different than mine. My dad had to redo the wiring to get it working. I can't get the light to work again, but that's fixable with a lamp. If you are lacking the book, you can find in online for free-the diagrams are bigger. Now I'm going to have to look for a hem guide.. The holes in the base plate are stripped, but I should able to get it to work. I have to use heavy duty singer needles, it doesn't like the needles otherwise. I just had to take the upper tension mechanism apart. I would love to have all the embroidery attachments for this workhorse, it works so much better than my newer machine. Did you just get a regular LED from the store? I usually end up ordering parts in bulk because I have a hard time finding the belts that I go through about every 15 months. Which is why I have a backup...

I learned with bobbins that you have to mind yours "P"s and "Q"s.......with top-loading bobbins, it's loaded like a "p" (the tail on the left side) and with front-loading bobbins it's loaded like a lower case "q" (the tail on the right side). Check out page 17 of the document you showed in the segment about oiling. Great video otherwise and thanks for showing us how to take care of our 99Ks.
