our teacher let us watch this video in online class thanks :)
That's wonderful! Thank you so much for letting me know :)
I'm very pleased to be able to help so many people!
@@24Washington I will be waiting, thanks !
This sewing machine is a family gem as my maternal grandmother sewed and helped the whole family for over 50 years and it is working very well today. If you want, I could send you photos, the cabinet, unfortunately, is not original, as this Singer was stationary for a long time, the termites ate all the wood.
How sad about termites, but family gems are still wonderful :)
You are welcome to send photos if you like. In my channel "about" page is a link for email. It says for business inquiries, but it is my regular address.
I hope the suggestion I wrote for the part is accurate for you.
I am 50 now. I just bought a sewing machine like this one in a junk yard because I always wanted to patch up my clothes. Thanks to your good help, I just mended my first pair of pants in my life with a sewing machine, and I am stoked. I couldn't make it work, but I saw from you, it is necessary to thread the needle from left to right. I am wearing those mended pants as I write. So good video.
This is utterly BRILLIANT!!!
Hats off to you, and I'm thrilled to have been able to help! :)
I wanted to type a note thanking you for your very easy to understand instructions on your Singer 15. My mum has the very same model and the cabinet looks the same also. She brought it from London with her when she came to Canada in 1947. She sewed endlessly on it . She passed away in 2013 and it got left to me as neither of my sisters wanted it. I am a retired mechanic and love all things mechanical. I took it apart washing all the mechanical bits and re oiled it. I watched your video to learn how to thread it and set the tension . I bought some new needles and thread for denim . I am happy to report that after following your tutorial, I was able to sew hems on my new blue jeans ! I was pretty happy . So thanks again for all your help .😀
That's an amazing story! Thank you so much for taking the time to share it.
I'm so very pleased to have been able to assist in getting such a special machine operational again, and send my best wishes for what I'm sure will be a long future of sewing delights!!
Thank you! Got today my wonderful 15K (Exactly like the one in the video) Haven't sewn on treadle in 35 years, so your great video helped bring the old habits back! My grandmother was a seamstress, she had a 15K from 1910 which I inherited. It's still very much alive and kicking - and better than any newfangled contraption.
Yay!!!! That's so wonderful.
Yes, these machines are built to last generations :)
Enjoy! So glad that I could be of assistance
Thanks very much for your sharing!! Your video helped me revive my vintage singer. I’ve been working for the whole day to make my machine work again after not using it for a decade. Only with your clear and detailed explanation, I managed finally! Thanks a lot!!!
That's so wonderful to know. I'm delighted that my video could help you get it working again!!
Enjoy your sewing :)
Thanks so much for this tutorial. I was just given my great-grandmother's Singer as a gift. Very keen to start using it :) x
What a wonderful gift! I'm so pleased for you :)
Enjoy becoming acquainted with it - it will serve you (and future generations) well, I'm sure.
@@24Washington So kind of you to reply. I look forward to using it xx
That demonstration of the feed dogs moving was so clear. I had no idea that it is the feed dog movement that determines the stitch length. Wow.
Excellent! Glad to have demystified the process somewhat!! :)
Great explanation of operating the treadle. I am a retired sewing instructor and you were very thorough and had great video of the steps. Well done. I am restoring my grandmothers 1901 Singer Treadle machine and this one is a bit different but most of the old Singers thread pretty much the same.
Thank you so much for your comment!
Wishing you the very best with your wonderful heirloom restoration.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. This has been a real education. My love and curiosity for these older machines increases with each video I watch❤️❤️
So glad I could help :)
This has helped so much I have a johnson 1892 treadle machine and this has helped another
So pleased that this helped you :) Thanks for the comment!
Just bought a Singer 15 myself at 29 y/o from the thrift store never having learned how to sew before! Your videos are a treasure. Thank you for helping me learn about this beautiful machine - I can get started learning how to sew now! 🤗
Awww. This is just wonderful!! Congratulations on your purchase, and I'm so happy that I can provide some helpful information to you!
Happy to try to answer any questions you might have :)
Wishing you the very best :)
I was an intern at a local Funeral Home and the widow died and I got her Singer. Thank you so much for this.
Awwww. What a lovely item to receive. Good luck continuing its legacy :)
So helpful, thank you. I just received my Singer 15 from 1890 😅 I’m so excited to get working
That's WONDERFUL!!! How exciting for you :)
I hope to have an in-depth guide into treadling in a month or so.
This is just wonderful, thank you so much.
Even though I’ve just been machine sewing for a couple of years with a Singer Tradition 2273 you have given me the encouragement (and kick up the backside, lol) to service and put my late mother’s five drawer treadle back in action. She passed in 2010 aged 87 and I have very found memories of her beavering away at her machine, sometimes late into the night… Hi Hi

Thanks again, form the East Coast of Ireland.
What a lovely connection you have to your machine!!
I am delighted to have played a part in encouraging you to get it operational again. :)
Thanks for those link recommendations and for the subscription, too!
I own a 1936 treadle sewing machine it is much like yours I personally like using the treadle over the electric because it gives way better results because you are in full control my parents gave it to me as a Christmas present when i was a teenager that year my parents gave all the the children expensive presents for Christmas I got the soigné machine my brother got a real live cow which he sold to pay to go to Bible college with and my sister got a set of cross country skis which eventually got broken but I still have my sewing machine I make money off it by selling the things I make
What a remarkable family history!!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this
Thank you, thank you for your video. I inherited the very same Singer sewing machine. Thank you I can use it ❤
Excellent!! All the best
Thank you so much! Just got this sewing machine as a hand me down from my Nonna. This is a very beginner friendly video thank you :)
How wonderful!!! And do you want to know what else is cool? My last name is Mancino 😍
My mother brought her Singer 15 -81 RAF centennial (handcrank) over from England on a former liberty ship. I use that machie almost daily. I take very good care of it, those Kilbowie machines are fantastic!!!
Great video and A+ for the manual. I've looked everywhere. When my parents were in Saudi Arabia in the 80's, my mother bought a Sinterman Mercedes DeLuxe machine. It works well but I'm a novice at this. Thank you.
You're so welcome :)
Thank you for the feedback.
THANKS SO MUCH - I was having a problem with my grandmothers 100 year plus treadle sewing machine and your video helped me solve it - I'm back sewing again!
Oh, that's terrific feedback!
Well done for solving the issue, and I'm thrilled that my video could help :)
Excellent tutorial, thank you. I've just been given my neighbors 1903 singer 15. She's owned it for over 60 years. I'm a 66 year old male, know nothing about sewing but I'm keen to learn how to maintain and use this machine.
That's wonderful!! Congratulations
Good luck and feel free to ask any questions :)
Thank you so much for this helpful video! 😍 My grandma never got to teach me this but now I can use her wonderful singer just like she used to 🥰
This is so wonderful that you are able to learn how to use her machine! I wish you every joy and success on your adventure 🙂
Tq very much for this tutorial. I decided to revive my Father & Mother-in-law's 15k80 version and this tutorial helps very much in the nitty gritty 👍 and yes tq very much for downloading the manual in it's original form. Your contribution is appreciated whole heartedly ❤ Tq once again.
You are very welcome. I am so pleased that the information could help another machine return to use!!
Thank you so much for your work! I have been given this model of machine from 1906 that was used by my grandmother. There is no manual, so your detailed instruction helps me to learn how to use it. I am so excited to start sewing.
Wonderful! Thank you for your comment :)
Good luck using such a wonderful family machine.
nice explanation. thanks for sharing
You are very welcome. Thank you
I've seen a bunch of these and this video is by far the best and most comprehensive one! It's been many years since working on one of these and have recently been given one and could not remember how to thread it. I hope you have a video on making bobbins, going to look for now. 😊
Thank you so very much for such a lovely comment!
I can have a tendency to go on and on with too much detail... But hopefully it was a good balance for you.
I trust you found my bobbin winding video - you might also find my most recent video on attachments to be of interest, too.
Take care.
Thank you so much for this video! I have an old Singer from my grandmother and even though it is not the same model, this has helped me so much to learn how to use it!
Yay! I'm so glad that I could help :)
Thank you for taking the time to comment!
What model is your grandmother's? I ask, because I have several machines in my collection and was thinking about making another basic operation video.
@@24Washington it is the 169M11, if i'm not mistaken
@@mafaldaj.344 Oooo! I've never encountered that one. Is it Italian? Had you see the manual pictures at picclick.it/Libretto-SINGER-istruzioni-illustrato-manuale-macchina-da-cucire-264692936034.html (Unfortunately, I don't think all of the pages are there).
Thank you this is super, finally found the same machine as my own!
Fantastic! Glad this could help you
I just watched your video, this summer I will have to give it a go on moms treadle machine. She wants me to have it some day. She had a hard time as well remembering how to use it. It’s been many years.
Awesome! I have a script written to help people learn how to treadle, but haven't yet recorded the video. Maybe I'll have it uploaded by the time you're ready to use the machine this summer. Good luck and feel free to let me know if you have any questions :)
My treadle machine will finally be ready to use later today and this was super useful. When I got it it had a faulty electric motor retro fitted to it and the table was missing. It was also fully seized up from being left in the damp. I motorbike mechanic friend got her moving again and I found a table for her that she has just been fitted to. I'm super excited about using her.
Oh wow!!! What a journey!
I'm so pleased that my video could help you and I wish you every happiness using her :)
Thank you so so much for the video and for the instruction manual. I have a 1927 model with no manual. Even though is not the same model, it is very helpful for the similar ones.
You're very welcome! I'm always glad to her that my video has helped someone :)
This is the best tutorial (about anything) i have ever seen. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for such a lovely compliment!
I'm glad my video was informative to you.
Thank you so much for this video. I have just bought a gorgeous 15k treadle (1951) and had never tried a treadle machine before, watching your clear tutorial has really helped me to get it threaded up properly and sewing!
Thank you for your feedback! Be sure to stay tuned as I anticipate delving into the treadle portion, too.
You don't know how much you saved my life with this video. I used to be dependent on my mother or sister or the local tailor for everything stitching, now I can do all stitches on my own. ❤️ You made a complex machine so easy to learn!
That's WONDERFUL! Congratulations:)
I absolutely love seeing people empowered to do things for themselves, and I'm so pleased that my video could help you.
Thank you for your comment.
Your an excellent teacher. I understand so much in this one video. Thank you 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for this lovely compliment :)
I'm so glad that you could learn a lot.
Excellent, I have inherited a fold away Singer treadle machine and considering learning to use it, potentially for stitching classic car seats amongst other things. At the moment I don't have a clue , so a new adventure in retirement. The machine is mint as it is a fold away, only the wood needs some TLC and maybe a bit of varnish.
What a wonderful adventure awaits you! And such a marvelous idea to work on classic car seats!
Your machine will most definitely make it through a single layer of leather or vinyl to top stitch or emboss.
If it struggles with two layers, you can always look into getting a heavier duty Singer 31-15. I have a treadle model one of these, too, and it will feed a more sturdy upholstery thickness thread and power through thicker materials.
Best of luck, and I wish you a very happy retirement.
Thank you ! My intact manual is in France language so your video is the only way to operate again this beautiful machine !
I'm so pleased to be able to help you like this!!! Have fun!
So glad to find this page in you tube. I learned a lot as i had similar machine. Thank you very much.
Thank you for such a lovely comment :)
I'm always delighted to know that my content helps others.
Thank you! I've just spent a couple of hours trying to figure out what went I was doing wrong with mine and then I found your video! Still not sure what model mine is as it was my grandmother's and she uses a motor instead of the treadle but it looks pretty similar to this one... So thank you again! You saved me from the frustration.
Wonderful!!!!! I'm so pleased that this video helped you.
Thank you for taking the time to comment! You've made me smile :)
This is the best video on this machine I've seen yet! Great job, thank you.
Thank you so much!! :)
I'm glad you enjoyed it
my grandma gave us her sewing machine and it's from the year 1964 but i don't know how to use it so thankyou for this
You're welcome :)
thanks. Have one of these, prob another unit of the same exact model, that my mother used when i was just a toddler. Sat down acumulating dust, im happy to start giving it use once again
Oh how wonderful! These machines will last many lifetimes.
Glad you're using it again :)
Thank you Ma'am. You're a big help and very considerate instructor for beginners 😘😘
You're very welcome!
No one beat antique singer sewing machine which is originally own by my great grandmother and she inherited to my mother because this old quality is really good compare to modern sewing .
Yes!!
Thank you so much for sharing your sewing machine and going through the manual! I have been dreaming of getting and using a vintage or antique Singer sewing machine, but as I am so new to sewing, I am quite intimidated! However, seeing you walk through this gives me some confidence that my dream might be possible!
You're more than welcome!
Two things that I love most about these older machines are the logic and straight-forward mechanical principles. They're really NOT difficult to figure out.
If at all possible and if you have the space, I would suggest a treadle. The early electrical machines are just as strong, but what you gain in speed and a reverseable feed, you lose in control.
I hope to one day do a tutorial series following the Singer Art Embroidery book - stunning pieces, all created one stitch at a time with a very controlled treadle (not full-speed like modern machines).
In the meantime, more operational videos will follow - so watch this space!
Happy to offer whatever assistance I can, just let me know.
Trust me as long as there is nothing seriously broken, day underneath 24wahington will give you all the advice you need to get your machine up and running again. I The threading of the two bobbins looks the hardest but this kind lady pauses and goes over most of the threading procedure twice over. I’m a bloke so if I can do it I’m pretty sure you can two. I am no sewer and don’t think I will ever be. I just wanted to bring this beautiful old machine back to life and with the help of 24 Washington a small can of machine oil and two reels of cotton my Singer looks just great all prepared for use. If any one asks me I can tell them the difference between the feed dogs and the tensioner! Go and give it a try. I must admit fitting the new treadle drive belt took three attempts. So very easy if you first place it around each drive wheel pull as tight as you can before cutting to size. When I fixed the first two attempts I treadles away but noticed the belt was stationary as it wasn’t tight enough for the wheels to make contact! 3rd time lucky and now it works perfect and looks so elegant. A little bit of history rescued from eventually ending up in a scrap metal merchants or a tip. Good luck and take care and please wear a mask when you are out amongst the masses. Bye for now Barry
Thank you! I forgot how to thread my grand grand mothers machine and this video helped me a lot!
Awww! How wonderful! I'm delighted that I could help 😊
I am a beginner and found this so helpful. Thank you ! I am looking forward to more lessons. I will have to do some detective work to find out more about my antique Singer machine. Cheers from Montana !
Detective work is my absolute favourite!!

I've inherit a similar sewing machine from my granny, just discovered it was manufactured in 1916, unfortunately don't have the manual, cause she bought used in the 40's and I'm trying to learn how to use. Your video was super helpful, thank you so much for sharing! ♥ (Now I just need to have some coordenation to move my hands and feet ate the same time and pace LOL)
What a wonderful machine to inherit! I'm very happy that my video was helpful, and I promise your coordination will improve with time :)
Good luck!!
You are great teacher
Thank you!
Amazing Instruction and quality camera angles!!!
Thank you for your kind comment.
Great video! You have lovely hands and a gentle voice! Perfect for giving confidence in learning about these wonderful machines. I remember that Mr. Singer's vision to bring the sewing machine in the home played a part in the emancipation of women at that time and wonder who sat at mine then.
Thank you for your kind words, and for the historical insight!
"If these machines could talk ... !!"
Probably the house husband when he came home from a hard days labour. Only kidding yes you are right. I guess it gave a great deal of enjoyment too. The only thing regarding emancipation. As a child of the 60s I well remember that the factories of most towns and cities were 99% filled with women using the machines and the other one percent were warehouse/ drivers and of course the over lookers were males cracking the whip if you weren’t keeping up with demand. Anyway good luck with your machines. I’m a bloke but have just brought a bit of history back to life thanks to 24 Washington. Although not in use it will never be on the scrap heap and looks amazing polished and cottoned up ready to go. Take care Barry.
Fantastic tutorial. My Father gave me this model machine but motor driven. This has explained to me perfectly how to use it. Thank you so much.
Awww. Brilliant! So glad that this video was helpful to you.
@@24Washington I do have a request if it's at all possible. The first thing I would like to make are some pillow covers with zips. Would love you to make a tutorial on how to do this with the Singer 15 and how to put the zips in. Only if you have time of course. Many thanks. Alix in Germany.
Thanks for the request. Are you looking for a side seam zip, or center back?
I just bought this exact machine!.....Thankyou so much, this was really helpful.

Thank you for the the good tutorial. Helped me to see what I miss in my preparation of the Machine.
Wonderful! I'm glad that it was helpful to you :)
I was just marveling at how much control you have over your treadle, being able to stop and start without using the hand wheel, and I was going to ask how one learns to do that -- now I know about practicing with the stitch mechanism disengaged. I'm sure it says that in my 27 manual too, but I'll have to try it!
Awwww. Thank you! Lots of hours have gone into that ability hahaha.
But I've had a video planned and partway scripted for nearly two years on the topic, and hopefully won't keep you waiting for too much longer.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge

Thank you so much for your tutorial….My Grandmother gave me my great Grandmothers antique Singer and I have searched through countless videos to help me figure out where I was threading it wrong, to no avail. I still don’t know where I went wrong but I followed your tutorial and I am now sewing without any problems. ❤️

Happy sewing!
Keep tuned in, because I'm currently working on a video covering the identification and correct use of all of the common sewing attachments!
It’s really transforming thanks a lot
You're very welcome :)
Thanks for stopping by.
I learnt to sew on one of these that had been converted to take a small external motor. It was a steep learning curve. My ex wife gave it away so I ended up having to buy a newer machine that did things like zigzag and buttonholes.
I'm so sorry that your old machine was given away.
There's definitely a place for modern machines, but vintage machines can usually be found from time to time. The attachments that were invented to allow for more sewing diversity are little engineering marvels, in my opinion.
You may have seen the other video I have which goes over some of the most common attachments.
very thorough!!! love your video!!!
Thank you :)

Thanks for such an awesome video! We are currently refurbing my partners 1903 treadle Singer that was from Scotland. He learned to treadle at his grandmother's knee. It is pretty much like yours except the thread length adjuster is opposite. Smallest stitches at the top. 😁

thankyou so much, very informative, i also have this machine but mine was made in 1940, it has the same decals too.im looking to refurbish/restore as i do not get on with electric machines(i have one which now doesnt work but rarely used), i learnt on a treadle when i was young and want to re-engage with a change of pace.
Brilliant! I can completely relate. I've been given a few electric conversions over the years, and disconnected the power as a first port of call on most of them 😂
Enjoy treadling!

@@24Washington hello im having a bit of a problem the machine no longer sews for some reason it doesnt stitch if i thread the bobbin it brings it up without a problem but thats it it no longer picks it up whilst sewing
You say "no longer sews" - have you known it to sew, and it just stopped? Or you've never been able to get it to sew for you?
Is your needle facing the correct way and inserted all the way?
Have you tried with a different bobbin?
My other thoughts would be:
Could it be a tension issue?
Could it be a timing issue?
If your needle is facing the correct way, make sure that the threads pull securely but not too tightly through the machine. You should be able to pull the threads by hand.
I would also suggest you open up the lower bobbin housing to see what happens to the upper and lower threads as the stitch is supposed to be forming. Use your hand on the wheel to slowly operate the machine with the presser foot up.
(I have another video showing how the lockstitch mechanism should work if you are not familiar with it.)
When you can see that the loose threads lock correctly, try holding the tails to the rear of the machine with a little bit of tension to see whether they still lock correctly.
You can also try with a thin strip of fabric with the bobbin cover open to repeat this.
Would you like to make some observations and let me know what you see?
@@24Washington yes the machine worked fine up untill today i will try some things and let you know
The good thing then, is that a major mechanical issue is highly unlikely.
It is hopefully something very simple, but you just have to try several possibilities.
Maybe completely unthreading and then re-threading.
Good luck!!
