- Playing Doom in Windows task manager. Finally got it working and looking decent!
But can it run Crysis?...
ctrl+alt+doom
Done by taking the original pixels, then parsing to black and white and scaling down to 56x32 pixels. I spent quite a lot of time finding a good function to scale the brightness to try to make the contrast good.

at this point, im convinced doom and crysis are two sides of the same coin.
one can run on anything, and the other runs on nothing.
if my comment results in the advancement of humanity, then so be it
oh boy
What if you could run crysis inside doom?
So we need to find the edge of the coin it seems!
But crysis is coming out on switch
This is basically what chrome does to your task manager

True
Alternatively: this is your task manager on Chrome, any questions?

1995: Doom gets ported to Windows 95
2020: Doom is implemented by Windows itself.
"These games are getting very realistic"
might aswell be part with solitaire
2024: Doom becomes Windows itself.
As a person who just shot a demon to get into the browser, I can confirm.
this aged rly well@@namal007
Now output sound as a waveform to the network usage tab. Bonus points if download/upload are the left and right channels.
You might be onto something here
Jesus ...
mate.
Output the sound from the dang FLOPPY DRIVE(s) (ya might need more then one :p)
VRM coil whine audio
i think this has been done during some chaos communication congress on the grafana board :) can't recall which one though.
Man, imagine 10+ years from now when we'll have so many cores you could do this same thing again and it'll look near HD
2073600 Cores..
Not 10 years. Just replace the CPU's in the vid with AMD's Epyc Rome CPU's. 64 cores 128 threads per CPU, more than enough to graph stuff quite decently if you use several of those ^^
And so the loop begins!
That won't seem impressive at all to those next-generation gamers who use those tens of thousands of processor cores for their augmented-reality brain implants.
Epyc 64c128t * 32 sockets would be 4096 threads instead of 896 here.
That's not what I meant when I said to check how much CPU doom is using in task manager.
Oops
Well that's too damn bad
Doom isn't using CPU
CPU is using doom
What people normally do with supercomputers: Artificial Intelligence research
This guy: "Let's run DOOM on the task manager."
Because this isn't going to create killer robots to wipe us all. Seems like a better choice.
It does have some implications though. You can hit cores with garbage data and maybe send information to something that has monitoring access only
Hello fellow doomguy
A true pioneer.
Or this will show the AI to fear Doom guy. If they tried to kill human kind, he shall come to rip and tear till job is done
CPU rendering has come a long since the early days
People from 1990s: We will having flying cars by 2020.
2020:
we do have them just cant use them yet
Way better
It isn't a bad thing that our flying cars haven't arrived. Haven't you seen the Idiots in Cars subreddit? Are you really in a big hurry to see its unholy spawn, Idiots in Flying Cars?
I don't know how long it will take to develop reliable self-driving cars, but I hope flying cars aren't available until at least then.
People playing Doom in 1990s: We'll have flying cars by 2020.
2020: We have Doom in blue lego.
You are clearly very young
The interesting outcome of this is that when you finish the first chapter, you end up in a pitch black room and get killed by a horde of enemies... Wouldn't that lock up the machine?
LITERALLY everything with a screen, can run Doom. It's the law of modern electronics.
I bet someone’s gonna do it without a screen, just link DOOM up to a printer and speed up the shots by like 500x or something
Not necessarily. A screen can always be added. If it can calculate, it can run DOOM
I mean here’s doom on a printer

It's official, doom has transcended the limits of digital technology
Yes
I'm calling AMD today, to play this at 640x480px we'd need 307 200 cores. I will give em a month for it.
that's only about 2.3k 128-core Epyc cpu's. Sounds doable.
:DD
Just a couple of EPYC / Threadripper and its done
Doom originally ran at 320*200 (and yes, that's for a 4:3 aspect ratio - it's designed with the pixels being "tall" in mind). So you 'only' need 64000 cores :P
doom originally ran at 320x200 though.
just 64k cores.
Now I believe when a sales man said buy more CPUs to increase gaming resolution.
*DOOM: Taskmanager Edition*
System requirements:
- Windows 10
- taskmgr.exe
- cpu 896 cores
pretty hc if you only got 2-8 cores
-896 cores*
and 400 threads
And
- Multi core thread
Your were so preoccupied with whether or not you could, you didn't stop to think if you should.
If the question is, "Should I play Doom on this?" the answer is always yes. No exceptions.
You definitely should.
Everything must run Doom. It's the rules, I don't make them.
mankind was create so it would run doom on anything that it sees. it was destined that we would do this.
They both could and should
Doom always finds a way
Impressive. As a CGI animator, this isn't *_quite_* the CPU rendering I'd be doing with that many cores, but since when does Task Manager refresh that quickly??
3 years late but if you hold F5 it refreshes very quickly
@@jakov1753 weeks late, but I didnt know that, thanks for telling me😊
"Do you always look at it encoded?" - The Matrix
AND they're playing on the highest difficulty.
We've clearly gone past the line of no return, so let's see how far we can get anyway!
Magnificent!!!
Knee deep in CPU cycles!
Only 20-30% cpu utilization. Can it run Crysis?
all of them
I think the joke about Windows being a computer game has reached it's peak.
I don't know whether I'm impressed or disappointed at the tenacity of people making Doom run on things it shouldn't.
manager: no you cant play doom while at work
programer hold my beer
that's utterly fragging EPIC. Now make the sound come out of and array of floppy drives...

They should collaborate!
This is one of the most ridiculously insane things I have ever seen for some many reasons. Good job, sir and/or madam.
When you arent able to play games at work
play it at 144p and small window, thank me later
Me: yo task manager close this app, It's not responding
Task manager: I Can't, I'm beating Cyberdemon rn
Holy crap; that's the worst but most awesome version of Doom I've ever seen! My brain had to focus so hard to see it that it started filling in colours!
It's cool to see a remaster of Doom for my task manager
0:48 He’s on Nightmare difficulty.
consistently blown away by this omg

Mom:
It's a good computer, quit complaining
Me:
Mom, i can only run doom on this thing.
Nobody:
Look at my 896 Cores...
Imagine having a whole core dedicated to one pixel
We live in such an absurd and beautiful time & place to be alive. Thanks for being here with me.
So how is this implemented? Telling each specific core what color ( CPU Usage) should it be?
I don't know the exact details, but the general idea is not very complicated. You can assign threads to certain cores, and there is a central rendering process that takes the input and loads the corresponding core in accordance with its brightness. Actually coding that, of course, is a whole 'nother can of worms.
I could see 2 different paths, but I don't know how feasible each is. In all of them, you aren't running the calculations for doom in task manager, but only using it as a display:
1. Feed task manager incorrect info about core usage so it displays the right colours
2. Find a 'bogus' task for each coloour you want to be able to show, for example 'calculate the fist 100 prime numbers by brute force', have your program run on ALL cores and send these bogus tasks to cores to make those cores busy
Actually thrashing each one that hard.
Finally, a computer that can run DOOM!
This is the ultimate form of Task Manager pictures
I can imagine in the year 2047, people are still trying to run Doom on the most ridiculous stuff possible. Like maybe we’ll see a video where somebody runs Doom on their medical implants
수많은 둠 구동 영상을 봤지만 이게 최고네요 ㅎㅎ 임신테스트기보다 작업관리자가 최고
which version of windows support 32x 56 core cpu's? I've found only that the most advanced win10 version supports only 256 cores (wiki and ms sites)
Probably a modified server based one
I want to see a tour of that set up. Cause damn.
This brought huge joy to my heart. It's craxy awesome!
people from 1940: we will playing doom in a task manager in te future
2021: flying cars
I NEED to know how this was done.
excellent, thanks a lot for this :)
We really don't know what to do with all that processing power anymore, huh?
it's simulating what it does to apps that aren't responding
Holy shit this is incredible.
This is just so epic
The madman continues with 896 cores
That's what the quarantine making to you...
Love it!
Holy shit... The future is now old man
The fact that he could beat this on Nightmare difficulty is the most impressive thing here.
And it's only using 25% out of 896 cores. amazing.
It's weird that I can skip to any given point in this video and identify immediately exactly where you are in e1m1
Now if only the case rgb lighting could be used to display a screen on the viewport of the tower to play doom.
There are cases that have screens in the side window.
There is this thing: ua-cam.com/video/9V_V_3xN_CY/v-deo.html
Amazing!
Well Done!
The mad lad
i'm literally watching Lucy (movie) and this video got on my twitter feed, like are we transcending?
The game with the highest system requirements.
32 sockets has to be a rack of servers consuming a few 10KWs of peak power 😮 and fan noise almost as loud as a plane taking off 😮
Doom really is the most violent hello world to ever exist
I ♥ it!
I wonder on which core the code is actually running on :D might look like a dead pixel
Of course it can also run Doom, because why not!
Call me weird but I read this with the LGR sound in my head :P
beautiful
Man, only 100 comments on a video with 200k views? That's crazy, man
Insane
I’m both impressed and terrified
NO WAY LOL
I want someone to play doom on a stove or oven/microwave
ua-cam.com/video/mM7cMG49N8Y/v-deo.html
There you go, doom on a microwave
So basically what I’m getting at with this is that if it exists, it can run Doom. Got it
Doom isn't just a game. Doom is a word "game" itself...
Doom is the game of all time
This is the reverse of what all my vms look like
Brutal!
every day we stray closer to doom running on every thing
Wow! This person must have had access to an entire server. Just one of those CPUs has 28 cores (56 threads), so he would need 32 of these CPUs.
Edit: I noticed the core/thread at the bottom-right and was amazed at the compute power required for this.
Now do this with crysis
That is crazy you are a genius
Please make a setup guide on how to do something like this
doom runs on literally anything
That’s awesome!!!!!!!
holy shit this is honestly the most epic thing i have seen in thelast year or so.
this is the best thing that machine ever did
the brain of this guy is a million dimensions ahead of everyone
Step 1: buy a new super computer, minimum with 896 cores!
And then the age-old question comes up: why?
this is insane
Can you do TETRIS?
one day we'll play doom in doom
So this is why we need super computers... and clusters... just to populate a pixel...
Q: but why though?
...
...
A: because we can
