In experiments on animals, it is often not taken into account that visual perception for them is not key in understanding the world. For a rat, the outside world is determined to a large extent by smells, data from vibris (whiskers), sounds (in the ultrasound spectrum). Without all this, the picture on the monitor does not make any sense to them.
Well said. You could test that hypothesis by removing the treats once they are trained to the system. But I still think it's a very valid study about how the brain can develop spatial understanding through various means of stimulus. In this case, treats are the stimulus. Imagine being able to find your way through something by taste alone. Or satiation.

I've probably missed something with my perception of this. On the surface level, I can appreciate that its cool that a rat can play Doom. On a more depth level however am I understanding right to say, positive behaviour is rewarded by the tube in the middle which gives something the rat likes, and the other tubes are to correct negative/undesired behaviour? If I've got that right, my further question for this experiment is questioning the rats motives. Is the rat actually playing the game with the visual stimulus of the game in front of it and moving the character based on knowing that's what they should be doing; or is the rat's motivations driven on the more basic level of ... "if i walk forward, i get my treat"?
You asked the correct question. In experiments on animals, it is often not taken into account that visual perception for them is not key in understanding the world. Without all this, the picture on the monitor does not make any sense to them.
Rat has no business caring about what happens on funny magic box, that's why it needs they need more motivation Can't wait for a rat to do a better vergil combo than me
Seems to be the case yes. The rat gets the treat when it moves forward. The demon blocks the movement so it has to shoot the demon to keep moving (probably button at the mouth part)
That rat doesn't have a clue or even care what's on the screen. Their eyesight isn't good enough to perceive the optical effect from the screen. Also they can't see red, so when it flashes red, the rat stops for a moment because to the rat, the light went dark.
I think the rat simply needs more sensory data, certainly sense of smell would probably be very difficult but sense of touch via whiskers is already being simulated here and probably just needs to be increased in accuracy.
If rats lived 20+ years instead of 2-3 we would be seeing insane amounts of intelligence from them, the potential is crazy. So sad they have such short life spans
It looks like the rat is just trained to run on a ball to get a reward, and it just happens to be controlling a doom character.
