I did my Timing Chain Kit swap out, and I didn't even need it. However, I am glad I did. It took me 2 and a half days to do in my driveway. I took my vehicle out for 4 trips going 98 miles each, and she runs as she should! Thank you for the video. You just added years of life to your engine. Even though the chains may look good, over time and the many heat cycles the metal weakens, also the plastic guides will eventually break causing another timing issue. Arghh my god, do not wait for your OLM to tell you when to change it. Oil is the life blood of any engine and the orifices and passages are so small that any grunge will impact the VVT solenoids Spend the extra $70 a year for two more frequent oil changes - you can do it yourself on these engines
I am.doing this one 2011 chevy malibu using the Cloyes complete timing kit, new everything. Crazy part is, I bought the car with 17,500 miles on it. Changed the oil with mobile 1 synthetic every 3k and added MMO to the oil and I was disappointed to see how filthy the internal valve train was.

I believe my 2012 Buick LaCrosse 3.6L Leather Trim vehicle has the same engine. GM recommends you change the Timing Chain every 100,000 miles. I am doing mine in 2 days and hope that it doesn't look anything like this! However, I change my oil every 3,000 miles and use Mobile 1 "full synthetic". I'm going on 300,000 [highway] miles, and she runs like it did when I first bought her.
Jon Nieves make sure you use a good quality chain kit or else it may go bad quick ,I was told to stay away from cheap kits sold on line there junk according to 2 mechanic friends . I have 2.8 same as 3.8 only smaller displacement in cts mines works fine and I change oil no later than 4500 miles and use motor kote and quality filters also I add some wynns engine tune up to oil every few oil changes a week before I change it for rings and lifters it cleans them gently . I looked in to chains in case they go the cheap of shore ones are poor
@@nickking1510 Well, I did my Timing Chain[s] about the time I posted my question/reply the first time. My car's interior parts looked nothing like these. Thank God. It was actually pretty clean. I obviously did a total cleanup, which was easy, cleaned the heads, timing cover, etc, and put in "new" everything [Timing Chain Kit, Seals, Head Gaskets, Water Pump, Upper & Lower Intake Manifold/Plenum Gaskets, Spark Plugs & Serpentine Belt]. I always use Mobil1 and whenever I had to open the engine, like for valve cover gaskets, the valve train is spotless. And these engines have 250K+ on them.
You sound pretty calm considering what a horrible job that is. Everything so hard to get at. That engine probably has worn out rings by now, making the problem worse, also there's a lot more crud in the crankcase. Good video. Thanks for your patience.
Thank you for watching, this was a pain In the tail job but this was actually easy compared to the oil pan we took that off to remove the crud and clean the lower half of the motor it driver great now.
Till the wave plate goes in the tranny. A quote from the dealer to do just the timing chains is around 3 grand, pretty much would total the car. It's no wonder GM is closing it's car plants.

Wow, I have the same engine in my traverse. GM suggests oil changes every 7500 miles, nope not me.I change mine every 3500 and use pennzoil platinum full synthetic.
I do mine every 3,000 miles and use Mobil 1 5W-30 Dexos Full Synthetic and Mobil 1 Filter. Only because Mobil Oil has been around longer than most. Pennzoil is engineered around racing cars and crossed over into street legal cars & trucks. It’s all good, mate! Different strokes for different folks. :)
Hahaha ya of course they do so when your engine blows they don't have to replace it. I run Mobil 1 and change every 5000km if that. Never goes over and happy engine.
I have a question: I'm not familiar with timing chains but I have here an 2011 chevy malibu 3.6L engine, its telling a code P0017 & P0014 but its a big engine and I'm trying to order a timing chains set. What is the difference from and to... Melling timing chain vs Cloyes timing chain or GM Timing chain. Do I have to buy the whole set or just the guide, chain, sprocket, etc. I'm not a fan of chevy but just still a beginner mechanic for DIY . Any advice. Thanks
I've researched and watched other videos and this is by far the best one I have seen on replacing these chain sets. Thank you for this. I have two questions. This going to be my second one. The first one I did I used cloyes, do you see a problem with that or should I just stick with oem (gm, acd)? Second, do you always change the guides? GM service bulletin says they only need to be changed if they are worn down to the base material.
Oh and I change the guides the one on the oil pump i pop off and change that one with out the mount. Unless your changing the oil pump. If the car is throwing codes and you can hear the chan on startup. I chang the pump. If it just getting up in mills and you wont to keep it from going out then its up to you. But the system works on oil pressure most of the time it is the pump getting week that is the problem
Looking at that motor I would be concerned about the oil pump. Since its right there might as well of replaced it and also the screen in the oil pan is probably gunked up
I have a serious question for you. If I use a Cam Holding Tool and keep the crankshaft at the 8 o'clock position, do I 'still' have to rotate it again to do the right side position? I saw the Melling version of Timing Chain replacement, and dude says that as long as the engine is locked via the Cam Holding Tool, the replacement can still be done, and a lot faster. I'm confused. I installed new chains and guides and tensioner when I rotated engine over the Left phaser for intake jumped two teeth chain lost tensioner for a moment and jumped two teeth! Is it because tensioner had no oil on it? Or what happened? I’m worried if I pill the cover again reset that chain what will happen when I crank it over it’ll do the same
My garage told me this engine has 2 reluctor Wheels and they think one wheel has slipped causing a timing issue on the left Bank and said they have to remove my engine to investigate 🙄
They said it would be pricey and then they recommended installing new crankshaft before they put the reluctor wheel back on 🤨 I said you guys are on crack, why don't we just get a new engine, they said that would be a good idea 😂
Every video I see of timing chain replacements, the engine is full of sludge, obviously no maintenance. I really wonder if chain replacement is even worth it, you know everything else is worn too. Would it make more sense to replace it with a low mileage junkyard find or a rebuilt/new one.
Engines are really not that difficult to remove and tear down and repair, most items. THIS 3.6L in this video, it is the worst Ive seen in 30yrs. Looks like original factory oil, with 150k miles on ot.
I change oil at 3k-4k. No matter what.. i have opened my engine valve cover, snd always have bern super clean..... this engine with have me freaked out!
This looks like someone who owned it didn't invest in using the correct weight oil, didn't change oil at intervals or didn't use synthetic oil. I like the ones who say aww that oil is too thin, you need to use 10w30, 10w40 etc instead of the 5w30 or what is recommended.
Salem taxi has a lot of work to do in regards to camera angles and instruction. You can't say this here, and right here and not only have a bad camera angle but also not even bother to point where your talking about 75% of the time.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate these types of videos. They're a great help but sometimes when people do things for a while they develop bad habits going through things a little quicker than they should and they miss tiny details that they forget are important to the novice or amateur garage mechanic.
Considering I'm working and filming at the same time. And provided the information need to complete the job..if you can do better, go for it make a video, explained your work, and show me how I should make a better video just for you. But I ask this question do u even know how to work on cars, if u did u would not need me to point to parts that I have called by name. This job is not for the amateur, and if u did not understand what I was explaining then maybe you should not try this job by yourself. It takes time, and some mental knowledge and experience to do this without messing up your motor. Hope this helps. Good luck.

You can get a set off ebay to hold the cams in place there is a flat one the cams on the far end you cam just check them before going back together. I also use a pin in the hole on the gear for the back cylinder to make sure its right. Easy to miss that one... ask me how I know...
You can if you have the tool. If not, follow the video along and you won’t go wrong. Just don’t buy any cheap internal engine parts. Get OEM originals.
Brake parts cleaner, from o'Reilly, and a wire brush. After assembly I treated the engine with my awesome cleaner process. Check my other channel Artistry photography for full details
I have been told over the years that when the inside of an engine look like that , the engine has had many different name brands of oil and not been changed reg. Sorry to say but I would hate for that engine to be mine.
Don’t follow recommend oil changes do them ever 4500 miles and use good filter an synthetic oil . I have a 2.8 same as 3.6 only smaller displacement I use 5-30 synthetic and a few oz of motor kote
Did you really change the guide on the oil pump.. says right in instructions not to touch as will fuck up oil pump alignment only suppose to change plastic slide never take off the bracket

bucknv19 I’m thinking of doing this timing changing job on my Saturn Outlook ,so far I removed intake plenum,valve cover,Power steering & coolant reservoir,fuse box,upper engine mount bracket including,I was having codes for Cam shaft sensor but I believe is the timing chain problem, I believe that this job is not for the amateur home mechanic (no ofense) if you decide to do it I will advise you to remove the fender ..why ? Because you have to remove the water splash so go ahead and remove the fender as well is very easy and you will gain a lot of space on the side to remove the first 5 items that I mention ,good Luck.!
People just don't realise you must change your oil and use the correct oil. People use non synthetic oil to save $ or drive it 10K miles plus on same oil as this is the result. The whole VVT system is stupid anyway . they should of left the old school timing set the way it was for years and years
That engine needed to come out and a clean one go in, you cannot clean it by wishing it clean and dropping shit down through the block, its spent, it needs to be totally stripped heads off and pressure cleaned, feather dusting is just going to make problems, reason I don't use mechanics.
It may have a flaw but the owner told me.she dosent change her oil. So that is no design flaw. I have the same engine in my caddie. Srx. Never had that issue. I change my oil every 4500.miles with new synthetic
A big problem with this engine is the restrictive PCV system. Drill out those ports on the valve cover and it will get a lot better. The main issue is the little nipple on the right bank towards the back. If you drill this out you will allow the motor to breath much better!
Greg G no really I have daily driver 3.8 gm n/a in a 2004 Grand Prix just turned over 400000 gets old changes full synthetic every 4500 miles and a good filter and a few oz of motor kote . Engine burn no oil get 35 mpg wit modded dual exhaust the engine sounds and runs like new .i also change all fluids every year and cooling ever 2 years . I also have a modded super charged 1976 vette many parts are original including all front end and steering , wheel bearings, transmission ,clutch and brake rotors , suspension, new shocks and pads . The car was raced in road race at tracks in Canada 2 years and auto slalom competition including 2 national championships only causality was the power steering pump . Repainted the car in blue and diamond metal flake and installed new carpet and redyed white leather seats

It sure looks like it. I know of a relatively clean 3.6 that has worn chains, or rather, necklaces.

I use cloyes no problems so far I have done 4 of them over the last 2 years all still running strong

Thanks for the informative video, will be tackling this soon on a 2010 GMC Acadia we bought codes Poo8,9,16,17,18 guessing most likely Timing chains sounds like a common problem on the Acadias. One question. How would you suggest cleaning the sludge oil out? Just parts cleaner and let it soak? How do ya make sure ya got those hard to get passages clean? Thanks New Follower! Dan Iowa
Depends on the sludge level but a flush would help
Just a FYI. I found out that GMC extended there warranty to 120k miles instead of doing a recall because of the timing chain issues .
Omg, I just brought one 2010 from a used car dealer. I got the same codes.
I installed new chains and guides and tensioner when I rotated engine over the Left phaser for intake jumped two teeth chain lost tensioner for a moment and jumped two teeth! Is it because tensioner had no oil on it? Or what happened? I’m worried if I pill the cover again reset that chain what will happen when I crank it over it’ll do the same
Use a new part and use clips to hold chain in place and follow the video
Take the chains off heads off and hose it with brake cleaner... then dw40 the cylinder wall lightly

My garage told me this engine has 2 reluctor Wheels and they think one wheel has slipped causing a timing issue on the left Bank and said they have to remove my engine to investigate 🙄
Sound like they gonna have a good bill for that
They said it would be pricey and then they recommended installing new crankshaft before they put the reluctor wheel back on 🤨 I said you guys are on crack, why don't we just get a new engine, they said that would be a good idea 😂
Every video I see of timing chain replacements, the engine is full of sludge, obviously no maintenance. I really wonder if chain replacement is even worth it, you know everything else is worn too. Would it make more sense to replace it with a low mileage junkyard find or a rebuilt/new one.
It's always a financial decision. And dont forget sentimental value.
When you see a motor like this it is time to replace the motor. This is not going to last long. This is what i see as a long term Tech.

Engines are really not that difficult to remove and tear down and repair, most items. THIS 3.6L in this video, it is the worst Ive seen in 30yrs.

I change oil at 3k-4k. No matter what.. i have opened my engine valve cover, snd always have bern super clean..... this engine with have me freaked out!

This looks like someone who owned it didn't invest in using the correct weight oil, didn't change oil at intervals or didn't use synthetic oil. I like the ones who say aww that oil is too thin, you need to use 10w30, 10w40 etc instead of the 5w30 or what is recommended.
Salem taxi has a lot of work to do in regards to camera angles and instruction. You can't say this here, and right here and not only have a bad camera angle but also not even bother to point where your talking about 75% of the time.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate these types of videos. They're a great help but sometimes when people do things for a while they develop bad habits going through things a little quicker than they should and they miss tiny details that they forget are important to the novice or amateur garage mechanic.
Considering I'm working and filming at the same time. And provided the information need to complete the job..if you can do better, go for it make a video, explained your work, and show me how I should make a better video just for you. But I ask this question do u even know how to work on cars, if u did u would not need me to point to parts that I have called by name. This job is not for the amateur, and if u did not understand what I was explaining then maybe you should not try this job by yourself. It takes time, and some mental knowledge and experience to do this without messing up your motor.

You can but that will require a few more hours of work

Yes to dissolve any remaining small particles 4 qts oil 1 qt awesome. Flush till oil is clean also change the filter during the flushing process.

Can you tell me the reason for the new timing chains? Did you use a tool to keep the cams from turning?
You can get a set off ebay to hold the cams in place there is a flat one the cams on the far end you cam just check them before going back together. I also use a pin in the hole on the gear for the back cylinder to make sure its right. Easy to miss that one... ask me how I know...
When doing this job do you need to lock the cams in place?
Follow the video directions
You can if you have the tool. If not, follow the video along and you won’t go wrong. Just don’t buy any cheap internal engine parts. Get OEM originals.

What did you use to clean the engine ..
Brake parts cleaner, from o'Reilly, and a wire brush. After assembly I treated the engine with my awesome cleaner process. Check my other channel Artistry photography for full details

I have been told over the years that when the inside of an engine look like that , the engine has had many different name brands of oil and not been changed reg.
Sorry to say but I would hate for that engine to be mine.
Don’t follow recommend oil changes do them ever 4500 miles and use good filter an synthetic oil . I have a 2.8 same as 3.6 only smaller displacement I use 5-30 synthetic and a few oz of motor kote
Did you really change the guide on the oil pump.. says right in instructions not to touch as will fuck up oil pump alignment only suppose to change plastic slide never take off the bracket
so if you are rebuilding the motor you must remove it. just make sure it is installed properly to avoid issues

Did u watch the video? All the stuff I removed had to be removed to get to the chains, there are no short cuts on this job.
@@salemtaxi9026 yeah I watched the video. I meant prior to where you video started. I have to fuse box removed etc.. does the coolant reservoir need to be taken out as well? Any other tips would be helpful. By the way great video I'm in the process of starting this right now.
bucknv19 I’m thinking of doing this timing changing job on my Saturn Outlook ,so far I removed intake plenum,valve cover,Power steering & coolant reservoir,fuse box,upper engine mount bracket including,I was having codes for Cam shaft sensor but I believe is the timing chain problem, I believe that this job is not for the amateur home mechanic (no ofense) if you decide to do it I will advise you to remove the fender ..why ? Because you have to remove the water splash so go ahead and remove the fender as well is very easy and you will gain a lot of space on the side to remove the first 5 items that I mention ,good Luck.!
If you follow the OLM then you will get what u have seen here from the beginning. I have seen a Acadia with gummed up crank case even worse than this.
People just don't realise you must change your oil and use the correct oil. People use non synthetic oil to save $ or drive it 10K miles plus on same oil as this is the result. The whole VVT system is stupid anyway . they should of left the old school timing set the way it was for years and years
All my new car always rag out before the engine, the engines outlast the cars because I use synthetic oils.

Yes the cam phasers seem to hold up well. I did my traverse and my dads acadia and both are just fine

That engine needed to come out and a clean one go in, you cannot clean it by wishing it clean and dropping shit down through the block, its spent, it needs to be totally stripped heads off and pressure cleaned, feather dusting is just going to make problems, reason I don't use mechanics.

It may have a flaw but the owner told me.she dosent change her oil. So that is no design flaw. I have the same engine in my caddie. Srx. Never had that issue. I change my oil every 4500.miles with new synthetic

@@georgemendez777 The high failure rate is due to the emblem on the front of the vehicle! LOL
A big problem with this engine is the restrictive PCV system. Drill out those ports on the valve cover and it will get a lot better. The main issue is the little nipple on the right bank towards the back. If you drill this out you will allow the motor to breath much better!
Greg G no really I have daily driver 3.8 gm n/a in a 2004 Grand Prix just turned over 400000 gets old changes full synthetic every 4500 miles and a good filter and a few oz of motor kote . Engine burn no oil get 35 mpg wit modded dual exhaust the engine sounds and runs like new .i also change all fluids every year and cooling ever 2 years . I also have a modded super charged 1976 vette many parts are original including all front end and steering , wheel bearings, transmission ,clutch and brake rotors , suspension, new shocks and pads . The car was raced in road race at tracks in Canada 2 years and auto slalom competition including 2 national championships only causality was the power steering pump . Repainted the car in blue and diamond metal flake and installed new carpet and redyed white leather seats
