The song, written and composed by James Taylor, is the banner song for his debut album James Taylor. It was released by Apple Records, and this song was the audition piece played by James Taylor for Paul McCartney and George Harrison, before they signed him up for Apple. There were speculations that the Beatles' song with the same title was inspired by James Taylor's song. JT on the other hand confirmed on his part, that the ending lyrics "yes and I feel fine" was inspired by the Beatles' song I Feel Fine.
The song pave the way for James Taylor's musical style of strained delivery, poignant, yet enchanting and elegant. Letting the lyrics, melody, voice, and guitar, melt into a wonderful musical creation. Many of Taylor's contemporary agrees that this song is his finest performance.
