Shake the Frost. That line “they raised the price of dreams so high I couldn’t pay”. Holy fuck wow. How true is that. He’s masterful in his songwriting. Truly special
@@drsimmons74 that line hit me in the chest like a train when I first listened to that song, I'm from a small town of 2,000 people and not shit for 30 miles either direction, nowhere to work besides one gas station and a diner. after I graduated highschool I had no idea how to get out of there but I worked my ass off that summer roofing houses, saved every penny then hugged my family goodbye then took off into the unknown with a full tank of freedom and no end destination, ended up across the country where I now live with a beautiful girlfriend, fulfilling career and a comfortable life but I'll never forget those times thinking of how badly I wanted to leave but couldn't because at the time gas was almost $5 a gallon and I couldn't get anywhere worth going to.
That solo at 10:00 straight up slapped and went perfect with this song! Like for real, that should just be part of it. Also, this song makes me cry everytime. Hits too close.
Absolutely. Ben Todd is sick talented. Absolutely ridiculous how good his songs are. His playing is phenomenal. I can’t say enough. His solo stuff like “Using Again” and Lost Dog’s “One Shot To Wake” are absolute gems. His performance of “The Mountain” is so good. I like it better than the original and the original is by Steve Earle. I mean the guy actually plays a Steve Earle song better than Steve Earle. Not many people can do that. Sorry man. I’ll shut up now
He is responsible for the best version of "The Mountain" that I've heard yet. I love Steve Earle and Levon Helm but Benjamin Todd's banjo version won me over.
For real it sounded good. Wish I could get that good at guitar. Just solo on the fly like that. I can play nose on the grindstone but I can't lead for shit 😂😂
By far my favorite reaction of this song, you had every intent to teach this song but after hearing his voice and the conviction in what he was saying, you immediately switched to full respect and just drowned in the song. I loved it because it showed genuine Love for music. ❤️🤘
This is hands down my favorite Tyler song. I love all his music but this song describes my childhood and teenage years perfectly. I grew up in the coalfields of Southwest Virginia across the state line from Pike County. Coal is king in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, Southwest Virginia and West Virginia, and with the current state of coal, the hard working men and woman have had to go to the extremes to make money. Some legal, some not. This song reminds me of the daily conversations between my dad and myself growing up. It will be 3 years in June since he left this ol’ world and he pushed me daily to get my education, become a good man, stay away from the growing amount of pills and drugs, and to get out of the hills. He wanted me to have a better life than him and he knew it wasn’t in the mountains where the only livelihood is dying. I feel like maybe you are focusing on the pills a little too much in the song, however. To me, it’s about a father’s constant reminder to his young son about the life lessons of being a good man, working hard, and to not venture down the wrong path in an area where it’s so easy to do. Then it fast forwards to where the son has reached the crossroads of staying straight or taking drugs and he’s struggling. So he thinks back to his childhood and his father’s advice. He gets the chills because he realizes every word his father said was true.
Your reaction to his voice and this song is exactly how it was for me. Tyler Childers is the real deal. I absolutely love this song. So good and what a voice!
Here are a few ideas: "Cover Me Up" - Jason Isbell (the Austin City Limits version is great) "Don't Think Twice" - Billy Strings (Dylan Cover) "White Freightliner Blues" - Molly Tuttle (Townes Van Zandt Cover) "Beautiful Stranger" - Marcus King Band
@@nosbigibby I think Jason is a great choice because his song lyrics are so incredible and on top of that he's a real guitar slinger. Not a singer-songwriter type.
It's awesome to see someone having the exact same reaction to this song that I had the first time I heard it. Love the passion you have for music, I know I'm not alone. I would recommend either "Shake the Frost" or "Hard Times" for your next Childers video. Again, thank you for doing what you do!
It's hard to imagine the absolute hopelessness experienced by the people living in these areas unless you have been to some of them. Entire towns built on the back of a dying industry, you couldn't write a sadder story. You should check out his song "Hard Times", this song speaks directly to the cyclical nature of life in coal country and how inescapable it can feel. Also - I've just found your channel today. I am really really enjoy your content. Keep it up.
*We're currently experiencing it in my town. Oil, coal, and railroad have dried up. Covid hit and made it twice as bad. Intense unemployment and drug problems abound. Sad to see the change the past five years.*

I don't usually enjoy enjoy reaction videos but your sincere eractions and love for the arts makes this format work so well. I really love hearing your little remarks and analysis is so much fun. Seeing you goof off and play along and the pure emotion in your reaction on Tyler's very first syllable and the so sincere smile growing on your face is good fun to watch and share. I think I consider this a perfect song! It really gives you an idea about Tyler's artistry when the guitar teacher says "Who cares about the chords!?" It's even more impressive having seen some of your other videos, which has just as much sincere emotion on your part but where you actually bother explaining the chords. You're so right in that it's the emotion and delivery that's on display here, the lyrics and the story, and the instrument is really just a vessel for delivery, rightfully taking a back seat! Thank you for your thoughts!
I hope you've become the Childers fan that I have these past years. I was late to the party but there are very few songs this man does that wont stir your emotions. Even when he does a cover, he puts that raspy yodel into it at the top of his dang lungs and it just is amazing! Mega talent!
Colter Wall, Tyler Childers, Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson. They all have real genuine voices that make them my favorite artists. I also love Eric Church, he’s not an amazing singer but a performer.
I've never seen someone with such great interval and theory training that still gets that much out of a straight forward 4 chord song. Loved the video keep it up. Love the silver sky as well.
Thank you for making this reaction video. Or else I'd might never heard about Mr Childers. And wow...that's pain turned into music if ever I heard it. Colter Wall and now Tyler Childers...this year is musically blessed...if not healthwise. Hope you all stay save, and keep distant :)
I have watched so many reactions to this video and yours is damn good man, the way you are playing with him at 10:08 you definitely feel the emotion in the song. I moved to a county near where he is from recently and pills are a huge epidemic there, this song means so much to me and my family, it speaks volumes to the struggle in the Appalachians.
You understand it. His guitar licks are beautiful, but that’s only one part of a beautiful piece of art. Thank you so much for focusing on the song as a whole. This song gives me chills too.
The first line literally went right through me, instantly brought me to tears. Everytime I hear great music I laugh, and I immediately laughed and teared up lol His voice is so powerful.
Tyler is fire, man! I've been blessed with the luxury of watching him grow as a good human & an outstanding artist...from his first open mic night at The V Club in Huntington, WV to the red carpet at The Grammys. He's a true troubadour. And God bless ya for 'getting it'! Getting what Tyler is trying to convey there...the message. Lonesome...haunting...desperation! Appalachian Blues at it's finest and most raw. God Bless Tyler Childers!! Appalachia LOVES you SO MUCH!!
First time watching. Tyler couldn’t be more genuine if the good Lord placed him directly on stage with his bare hands in front of your very own eyes. Truly a gifted, authentic soul. Check out the Universal Sound and the story he tells there.
Hey Michael, came across this reaction vid you did, and i must say out of "ALL" the other reaction vids on this song, you're the "only" one who got the message of this song correct, by paying attention to one word that sets the whole story of this song into place,,,,,"Pills". Good lookin' out👍🏼
Jason Isbell is fantastic (as a lyricist and a guitarist), literally anything would make for a good reaction video. If you want acoustic, pick "Cover Me Up" or "If We Were Vampires" if you want electric, go with "Never Gonna Change" or "Decoration Day"
Listening to Childers on repeat right now and even though this song is one of his best, it’s “shake the frost” for me. What a great songwriter and what a voice…loved your reaction!! So much fun watching your face light up the second he started to sing…
Childers is an amazing artist and humble person. He is fairly local to me, i've watched him for years on open mic nights as he grew into what he is today. Real and raw.
Colter Wall’s song “Cowpoke” has a completely different song, and on the “Western AF” channel you can hear him talking about it a bit beforehand (Here’s a link: ua-cam.com/video/MmxKsK90L14/v-deo.html )
I am a huge fan of Tyler Childers and after listening to some of his songs tonight UA-cam recommended your video to me and I can truly say I really enjoyed this video, your take on Tyler's song, the way you joined in and understood the music, on deeper level, of which I can relate to. You have my subscription and I am now going to watch some of your other videos. Thanks for your time buddy.
I felt your passion and pain on hearing this song.. I would never have heard most of who you react to being from the UK, Some great singers .. and great reactions . The little riff you slipped in was awesome too
Pike county native here! Tyler Childers is an amazing artist from my area and this song really hits home. Especially touching on the pill epidemic that’s destroying the country. I work as an underground coal miner, and let me tell ya there’s nothing else like it. It’s a family tradition that runs deep. But there’s also a lot of negatives that come with working a backbreaking job like that. Sort of how he describes in the song. But aside from all that I’m loving all the videos man! Keep up the awesome work. Definitely smashing that subscribe button!
Another one of my favorites by Tyler Childers is called Hard Times, would love to see you take a look at it. Also just came across your channel and love every video I've seen so far, keep up the quality content. I Will be sticking around for sure.
I love watching people who actually appreciate good music, listening to Tyler Childers for the first time. It's like watching them take axe handle to the forehead. "Wow, how have I not heard this yet!?"
At the same time I worry about those who don’t feel it. Soulless empty shells posing as humans. How can anyone hear this and not be moved? It’s seriously signs of a sociopath
This is why we love you Michael - you catch the chords and the technique, but most of all you catch the feeling. Tyler is such a talent, a true troubadour - with the heart and soul of a people in his voice and in his fingers and in his feelings. Like they say on the streets, "Real recognize real." Michael Palmisano you are appreciated.
Love love love love love. Tylers music came into my life probably 2 years ago and I have to rank him at the very top. Tears literally fall sometimes listening to some of his songs. That being said, I'm new to the channel and totally digging your reaction videos. I have learned many of Tyler's songs. Many are simple.. i love how you call the pull offs and details "whatever" because i totally agree. Its pretty dressing but the songs are about his lyrics and emotion that pours out of his voice.
The first time I heard this song It stopped me in my tracks, and I couldn't hold back the tears that followed... cause I fling lived it, and I survived to text here about it... many didn't... buried several of my kin in Kentucky who weren't so lucky... you can hear the pain in Eastern Kentucky in his voice... Love ya, Tyler.
I like you actually listen to music and recognize the feelings in all songs. Due to that, I would love to see how you react to Cody Johnson's cover of Shameless. I love this cover because you can see how much he enjoys playing and he just has so much fun.
Growing up in West Virginia has been surreal, especially as I've got older... looking back, as a kid I never realized what the people around me were dealing with, my father (messing up his back and getting onto Oxycontin) and it becoming more obvious just how much of my family were affected even if they tried to hide it from me and my cousins...
Gems on vhs is a super underrated channel for anyone looking for this unnamed genre, western AF is also amazing. Spread them far and wide. Country music is dying and Nashville's killing it. 👍
I'm from a small town in the oldest county in West Virginia called Hampshire County. The pills herion and meth is everywhere ruining so many peoples live. I was using pills after I was prescribed something mild for my back being out of line causing really bad pain. Well the pills I was getting weren't helping anymore so I had to get stronger ones off the street. After my back was better it was to late I was hooked and was introduced to perk 30s and was doing multiple a day then started to smoke them after I learned you could do that. I would spend a whole pay check in a day or 2 and would have to start hussling day to day to get my fix. I lost my girlfriend I loved more than the world lost my car lost my family's respect and trust. One day I told myself if I keep this up I'll never have anything and will stsy in my current state unless I do something about it. I called for help and got the help I needed. The hardest part was the first step forward and telling myself I have a problem. I have been clean for 3 years now and counting. When I first heard this song it was just unreal. Not only can I relate to this song but also everyone else that has or still is struggling. I love to olay along to this song anytime I'm feeling down and it helps me to keep grip on what I have accomplished. Love this song and am very happy that you did a video on this beautiful piece of art!!!
Just popped up on my feed again- and I have to thank you for introducing me to one of my favorites of the past 2 years. Tyler has already sold out his Red Rocks shows for 2023! That's why I love his music so much cuz I feel like I've been listening to him my whole life, even though it's only been a couple years
His cover of Pink Floyd's Time! Who sings Pink Floyd like that??
I think you would really enjoy
“You Don’t Care for Me Enough to Cry” by John Moreland
Second
Oklahoma boy.. red dirt for real
Yes you must listen to this live version : ua-cam.com/video/euy4A5niG8Q/v-deo.html
You will not regret it.
That song never fails to leave me a bit broken. Just devastating songwriting.
Tyler lived it for real. He's now a sober and happy individual. So glad I have his music to power my days...
Me and my gfs song is "Lady May"-Tyler childers. Give it a try
Me and my GF too
I walked down the isle with my groomsmen to that song waiting for my wife
You're the best, man! I wish everyone was this passionate about music
Asher Holmes it’s so nice to watch someone love it as much as you do.
Thanks guys :)
I agree! I love when I see people who get as excited by music as I do!
That would be a very boring world, if everyone was passionate about the same thing.
Yep ur sick, welcome to the club!
If you like this you should hear his song “ follow you to virgie” makes me tear up every time
His song Coal is one that always get me.
Shake the Frost. That line “they raised the price of dreams so high I couldn’t pay”. Holy fuck wow. How true is that. He’s masterful in his songwriting. Truly special
He played it at his NY concert the place went nuts
Teared me up... new me think of two women in these Ozark mountains .
4:01 “holy shit”😂😂 I think that’s everyone’s reaction when they hear Childers for the first time
This is the Tyler Childers reaction that I didn't know that I needed. Excellent reaction!
That solo at 10:00 straight up slapped and went perfect with this song! Like for real, that should just be part of it.
Also, this song makes me cry everytime. Hits too close.
Chris knight - Down the River. Or William. In same vein
This is one of my all-time favorites. Gives me chills every time.
Great suggestion!!!
William. Please
Any Chris Knight song. There is no bad one.
Talk about a song that tells a story, down the river is one of the best
Highly recommend Benjamin Todd and the lost dog street band
Agree with this wholeheartedly! They will really blow up in the next 18 months IMHO
Yes!!!!
@@jenbranshatraw Ben's cover of the Mountain gets me every time.
10:08 haven’t seen anyone talking about your beautiful addition to the song. Man you are good lol
For real it sounded good. Wish I could get that good at guitar. Just solo on the fly like that. I can play nose on the grindstone but I can't lead for shit 😂😂
Joshua Ridge keep at it my friend...it will happen!!!
By far my favorite reaction of this song, you had every intent to teach this song but after hearing his voice and the conviction in what he was saying, you immediately switched to full respect and just drowned in the song. I loved it because it showed genuine Love for music. ❤️🤘
That’s it my friend. Thank you
Of course, I'm a Metalhead but when you hear the spirit of the backbone of America, you don't look away. 🇺🇲
The first time I heard this song I cried. I still do. THIS MAN IS AN ABSOLUTE GIFT TO MUSIC.
Just chiming in again to recommend Late July by Shakey Graves
LeftHandMan he knows Shakey ;)
Watching you not even touch your guitar and just taking Tyler Childers in says it all. Hard to find something so raw and powerful
Seeing the emotion on someone's face when they hear this song for the first time is incredible. This song will live forever.
Here are a few ideas:
"Cover Me Up" - Jason Isbell (the Austin City Limits version is great)
"Don't Think Twice" - Billy Strings (Dylan Cover)
"White Freightliner Blues" - Molly Tuttle (Townes Van Zandt Cover)
"Beautiful Stranger" - Marcus King Band
Yeah, definitely some Molly Tuttle
Cover me up definitely
Cover me up, Austin City Limits version is legit: ua-cam.com/video/NaUCDqWzy1k/v-deo.html
@@nosbigibby I think Jason is a great choice because his song lyrics are so incredible and on top of that he's a real guitar slinger. Not a singer-songwriter type.
Yes! Yes! Tyler Childers!!! Saw him and Sturgill live in February!
Canceled... :/
I hate that. They put on a great show!
They do put on an amazing show! Love em both!
How was it?!?! I've seen Tyler but not Sturgill. Was supposed to see em both Ma6 5th, but of course it's been postponed cuz damn COVID.
Same!
It's awesome to see someone having the exact same reaction to this song that I had the first time I heard it. Love the passion you have for music, I know I'm not alone. I would recommend either "Shake the Frost" or "Hard Times" for your next Childers video. Again, thank you for doing what you do!
Love it. Thanks!!!
You have to listen to Out On a Drunk, mais Feathered Indians and Whitehouse Road
I'm new to this channel, but something I've noticed in almost every video is the pure joy that comes across Michael's face during the music. Love it
It's hard to imagine the absolute hopelessness experienced by the people living in these areas unless you have been to some of them.
My roots are in McDowell Cty West Virginia... and couldn't have said it better 💙
Russell county va about an our from pike county where tylers from and his songs are so critical of the area and rightfully so. We are drowning and theres no life rafts
Quit putting coal killing politicians in power!!!!
@@propstick Has nothing to do with government, but the market demands. Even with Trump pro-coal policies, most energy providers prefered natural gases and renewable energy. They are more effective per cost than coals.
Bro I come across your page by accident and all I can say is I've been going thru your stuff and can't get enough. Thanks for doing these because it's amazing. Keep it up, man.
Phillips Family thank you!!!
You know it’s a serious song when Michael puts the guitar down, and says you know what let’s just listen to that again. You’re killin it man!!!
Ollie9mm dude. So true. Thanks so much!
Sturgill Simpson / Tyler Childers 2020
DING!
@@Guitargate Canceled unfortunately :/ Two of the best!
I went to one of those shows on the good lookin tour
@@gshep42 I had tickets to see them in Houston last month. Maybe next year...
Canceled.
I started tearing up first time I heard this song. Hits home.
This is why I'm subbed here Michael... I had never heard of Tyler and now I need to hear all of his music. Excellent job, thank you!
Vandyman yesssssss
You are in for a treat. A truly beautiful and heartbreaking storyteller.
I been listening to tyler childers for a couple years. He is a beast. Check out Zach Bryan too. The both write great lyrics.
The pain in his voice......that is what makes the song good..conviction....you nailed what it is about....moved me the first time I heard it
Yeah, Mr. Childers left me speechless too. Lol the guy is a legend
I hope you've become the Childers fan that I have these past years. I was late to the party but there are very few songs this man does that wont stir your emotions. Even when he does a cover, he puts that raspy yodel into it at the top of his dang lungs and it just is amazing! Mega talent!
I love watching musicians and vocalist just geek out over this guy. He’s got something about him that’s just magnetic
I only discovered Tyler Childers yesterday and I already consider him my favorite musician. I broke down crying listening to a live show.
Jon Moreland- you don’t care for me enough to cry
Great shout, this is an incredible song.
Love Tyler Childers- shake the frost!
HELL YEAH!!!! Love this!
You understand it. His guitar licks are beautiful, but that’s only one part of a beautiful piece of art. Thank you so much for focusing on the song as a whole. This song gives me chills too.
A army buddy of mine from Georgia hooked me on Tyler. I’m grateful for that. Thanks, Ethan, wherever you are. 🤙🏼
The first line literally went right through me, instantly brought me to tears. Everytime I hear great music I laugh, and I immediately laughed and teared up lol His voice is so powerful.
I am a laugh/cryer too
“Lady may” by Tyler Childers is amazing a lot more guitar picking and it’s beautiful. It will make you feel the season of spring ! Love the videos 👍🏻
Its a beautiful thing when a son respects and appreciate his father its the same respect that makes a man believe in god and respect life.
If you want acoustic, pick "Cover Me Up" or "If We Were Vampires" if you want electric, go with "Never Gonna Change" or "Decoration Day"
Gotta do outfit!
He’s on a course straight to Isbell lately for sure
Tyler Childers and colter wall covered a song together called “Fraulein”. These guys together and unbelievable
Jeffrey Tanner definitely a good one!
Such a great song!
Good version but it’s actually not his song. Check out the original by Dave Stamey
So you know, Sturg found Tyler and brought him to light and produced early records. He is also from the same town as Chris Stapleton.
And The Harvest.
@@cicibradley2809 That's another one of my favorites too.
You're solo was sick. Perfectly fit. You could tell you felt that.
Tyler is raw soul, your reaction is too, Well done for being authentic.
Also let’s talk about that little solo you made over the song 👀
Right?! That sounded insane.
I was wondering if anybody else heard it! Vibed perfectly with it
That was amazing lol holy shit
Yess
Love love love love love.
Tylers music came into my life probably 2 years ago and I have to rank him at the very top. Tears literally fall sometimes listening to some of his songs.
That being said, I'm new to the channel and totally digging your reaction videos.
I have learned many of Tyler's songs. Many are simple.. i love how you call the pull offs and details "whatever" because i totally agree. Its pretty dressing but the songs are about his lyrics and emotion that pours out of his voice.
This song is so good For a second I thought this was gonna turn into “guitar teacher listens to Tyler Childers”😂
How did people thumbs down this video? Great song and great reaction! Keep it up!
Tyler Childers shake the frost or Cody Jinks Somewhere in the middle, Love letters and Cigarettes, or less wise
I second all of these. Excellent choices.
Ditto
Yes. Yes. And yes
Shake the Frost please!!!
Any Cody Jinks! A couple of my favorites are momma song, hippies and cowboys and fast hand!

Lot's of good stuff can be found around this man.
Gems on vhs is a super underrated channel for anyone looking for this unnamed genre, western AF is also amazing. Spread them far and wide. Country music is dying and Nashville's killing it. 👍
Solo or with lost dog street band, phenomenal artist
Using Again... man crazy good song
As someone who also struggled with a script addiction im proud of you. 7 years clean. You can do it
Dude also has one of the tightest bands I’ve ever seen live.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is probably the tightest ever
Just popped up on my feed again- and I have to thank you for introducing me to one of my favorites of the past 2 years. Tyler has already sold out his Red Rocks shows for 2023! I love his voice SO MUCH. Thanks again, that is why I keep watching... and I definitely listen to music in a whole new way since viewing your channel.
Out on a drunk/honky tonk flame is one of my favs by him. I listen to that and born again everyday
