Rescuing a baby flying-fox in a courtyard; this is Butterscotch Schnapps

- The rescue call said there was a possibly dead bat hanging low for 24 hours, but the MOP had no idea if it was alive or had a baby on it.
I thought, easy peasy; I can drop in and check a dead bat, probably off powerlines, which will most likely be male and have no baby; bag it up and dispose of it and all on my way to the nursing home to visit my Mum..
Of course it couldn't be as easy as I planned, and turned out to be a skinny 10 week baby (whom the MOP thought was huge) stuck in a courtyard side passageway of a terrace house.
Predictably, our little baby was rather unhappy about the entire situation including the lead up to her misadventure, the architecture, the plants, the rescue, me (the furless pink kidnapping giant) and basically everything about everything. I sorted her out in the carpark of the nursing home and put her to bed for the time I was with Mum, and brought her home.
I popped her on Owl so she could suck his beak.
I dropped her off to a carer that night; I've been too busy to take bats into care for a while.
The carer as asked me to get an xray for her collarbones this week so I'll see her again.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Poor girl. How heartbreaking she lost her mum and was trapped alone and injured. She's devastated 💔. Her cries tell the tale. Glad she's in such loving care. 💞

Now I know that you not only CAN love the bats, but you NEED to; it makes me wish all the more that I lived where these bats are, so that I could also train to care for & rescue them. I LOVE them.
Poor little lost girl. I hope the XRays don’t show any collar bone breaks or other major concerns. It was fascinating to hear a bit of your history in wildlife care. I’ve never heard of parrots being described as psychopaths with bolt cutters, but that’s both apt and concise. And very Meg.
Still love parrots but they have the emotional maturity of a 3 year old (for life) and bolt cutters to enforce their crankies.
@@Megabattie Perfect description, I did some time with a group that took in and rehoused parrots people had bought, not knowing what they were getting into. Pretty labour intensive.🖤🇨🇦
🤞🏻 that Butterscotch Schnapps’ x-rays come back clean. I’ve learned not to get my hopes up too high, especially as much as she was cranking. She’s such a pretty girl, and would hopefully be a feisty addition to someone’s aviary!

I"m not sick, just recovering from 6 days of very high fevers. I just have to take it a bit easy for a few days until I get my strength back. I sleep a lot and get really tired.

I always wish that when people rescue animals, they would understand that you are just trying to halp them. Even though the can't understand, what you are doing is fantastic! I wish I could help!

It's not as simple as "loving on them"; it's brutally confronting; they don't all survive, and if you over-tame them they're not releasable and are euthanased.
I do understand, I love the fact, though that you give them a fighting chance, and do what you can. I feel like every living thing deserves a chance. You’re a very kind person.

They have the intelligence of a 5 year old and the emotional maturity of a piece of limp spaghetti. (none).
And they have the bolt cutters to enforce their displeasure about perceived slights.

That poor little girl was so mad at everything and everyone.
I can't imagine what she must have been thinking after losing her mom, getting stuck in an unfamiliar place and then having a furless giant come and wrap her up.
No wonder she didn't want any glucose.
That little batattitude is quite funny.
I always find attitude endearingly entertaining, however sometimes it heralds more underlying physical distress.
Butterscotch has probably been released by now.
Hoping she's ok and can learn human mamas are the next best thing to battie moms. Poor Butterscotch's cries just tore me up! I know, I know - it's outage and defense. Still, it's a baby crying to this human mom's ears. Also hope the MOP learned something but sounded like she's had a lifetime of misinformation. *sigh* Thank you for everything you do!
I don't expect everyone to like bats; I just expect them to call for rescue.

Sometimes people call because they want their problem gone; sometimes they call because even though they're terrified they still don't want bad things to happen. I'm just happy that they call and ask them to call immediately if it ever happens again.

Butterscotch Schnapps is aptly named. Very sweet and buttery, but packs a wallop. I hope she'll be alright and no damage is found. She is good at crankiness for a baby. But, she's a wild baby that's too big for all this, so figures telling you off is best. Take care, Meg.

@@Megabattie I hope you and your energy improve. It seems like flu, virus and the common cold duration is longer as I've gotten older. I guess our immune system can diminish with older age or the bugs are stronger?

She is one of the most upset babies I have observed.

That MOP was so rude. Interrupting you, while you're explaining, with a rude "just take it outside."
She was terrified, and I hadn't realised it; she just needed the bat to be out of her house whence she could at least talk to me without the fear that it would escape in her house.
Thankyou Meg for taking such good care of her and all the batties.
Don't know why, but I find myself really pulling for the exceptionally outraged ones...... guess I appreciate the spunk. Will be hoping BS's x-rays come out ok.
She certainly has a lot of fight, carrying on like that well after she should have had her emotional crash and gone quiet. Fingers crossed nothing untoward turns up in her xrays!

If I was any good at making things I would make for you a bunch of stuffed animals that looked like a momma bat. It seemed like a moment when Butterscotch saw those big old owl eyes she said "yikes"

I've made stuffed mumma bats - they're so-so; for some reason they love the Owl - they younger they are the more they take to him.

Schnapps is a drink. A kind of brandy I think.
She appears to be old enough to have completed her bat course on "things that will kill you" and does not entirely trust humans.
Btw the course probably has a section on owls
She's definitely got the gist that humans are to be avoided. Shame she didn't get the memo about light wells, courtyards and side passageways.

I can't get some footage converted into a format I can use. It's really annoying. If I knew the issue I could probably fix it, but it appears to be in the right format, just the computer won't recognise it and says there's nothing there.

It won't cost money; various things do cost money like getting a new battery for one of the computers - but I just need to figure out what I've done wrong which is why I can't convert it. Frustrating @@tamarrajames3590
