Rescuing a bat attacked by a dog; this is Twofer

- It was around midnight and there was a call fairly locally, for a bat attacked by a dog, so I hauled my butt out of bed, got dressed and went to collect the bat who would need euthanasia because the MOPs said one of the shoulders was broken or dislocated.
I don't like dog attack rescues because the bats are usually quite mangled, so it was an emergency.
He was an easy rescue - just go and pick him up out of a crevice; predictably he was a tad upset by the entire proceedings, and swore at me. I was handling him very gently in case he was in excruciating pain, and I could see a bit of white bone sticking out from his leg, in amongst all the flapping and wriggling and general screaming crankiness and fear.
I get him home and check him out in the garage because he was screaming so much I didn't need to disturb the neighbours. I just needed to see if he needed immediate euthanasia, in which case I'd contact one of the specialist emergency hospitals and beg and plead them to see my batty and trust me to hold the bat and keep them safe during the euthanasia.
I couldn't see any shoulder injuries and he was doing flappies and bigwingsing me in between casting aspersions on my parenthood and legitimacy.
In wrangling him I found that his broken leg was a bird feather quill and not a bit of dead bone sticking out, and that there was no visible shoulder injury, so I brought him upstairs with a warning that he needed to be very quiet otherwise people would know he was in my apartment.
I got him upstairs, give him some analgesia and let him settle while I had a shower, then came back to give him fluids and see what was going on with him. He wasn't particularly cooperative but at least he wasn't yelling and screaming, which helped.
Then I found out 2 critical things, but you'll have to wait and see what and why it was important; why I called him Twofer and what happened thereafter, but trust me it's happy.
This bat is a survivor. Enjoy the video in the order of my experiencing the rescue.
No wonder she was screaming! Protecting her baby. Good luck,Mama Bear.
Oh I do love a grumpy one ♡ Just the outrage! I only wish I was free to scream at everything that displeased me as well.
My goodness gracious, Mister Man! Such an outburst! Auntie Meg will have you right as rain in no time!
I always laugh at the angry nom noms. Another great name! You really are the Queen of naming the batties. I am very pleased to see that they are a survivor, yay.
I won’t give away the end of your video, but it is indeed happy and hopeful. This started out with you getting up in the middle of the night in the rain for what you thought would be merciful terminal intervention for a dog-savaged bat in terrible pain. You expected a sad experience, but that didn’t stop you. Step by careful, patient step you examined and gave medical support and what comfort you could, and the initially screaming, frantically thrashing bat quieted by degrees. By the end they were watching you quietly and mostly accepting help and grapes, especially grapes. You never expected a survivor let alone the surprise. Thank you for sharing this intense experience.
I hope she and the baby are ok! 💖 I've never heard a battie sound like a little piglet 😂 please keep us updated! Thanks for your marvelous work 🙏🏼💖
Ah she’s gonna make it… I hope baby survives too… it’s all so dramatic! I love the way she watches you Meg, whilst you clean her up. She trusts.
I just love those little feet reaching out. There’s something endearing about them.
I was loathed to read the description after watching but I'm glad the outcome is positive. I look forward to the update. Two for One
She’s like don’t touch me. I’ll eat your grapes under MAJOR protest 😁😂🤣😂🤣
It is amazing to see a terrified bat at first yelling out a swear storm...and then calm down and sees you with trusting eyes.
I loved how even you were extremely tired your autopilot kicked in and you told yourself: " fluids!!!" BRAVO for MEG🎊🎊Quite a filthy month for this pregnant battie 🤦🏼♀️. I really hope she gets better and doesn't loose her baby 🙏. Big hug🤗 from Silvana from South America
Oh my goodness! Such a tough girl...with a baby.
My heart is still racing as I respond fully knowing you all are half a world away.
Oh My! I've never been so thrilled at news of a random feather incident! Keeping everything crossed for Twofer, she's a real feisty momma! Great work as always, Meg - even the most outraged and vocal bats don't wrongfoot you!
She is one tough soon to be mama! Thanks for the hint about the future, the outrage is stunning and entertains, but the distress just rips at me.
So it's looking like she didn't lose the baby yet? What a strong girl. I hope she doesn't lose the baby but I know that it's still a possibility. I do hope you'll keep us posted on Twofer's progress even if she is no longer with you.
She is lovely :D and really managed to maintained the rage there, huh?! :]
Such a racket, he meant business (lol) thank you Meg 🦇🍁🇨🇦🐘🌞
Meg, I’ve been having some nightmares that I am a bat in trouble and you rescued me. I was attacked by a dog and another time I was caught on barbed wire. Thank you for all your caring work.
