Rescuing a flying-fox on a back doormat: this is Tafia
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 жов 2024
- Tafia is a 12.5 week juvenile female Black Flying-Fox who found herself on a back doormat in an oceanside suburban terrace. (this age is not common at this time of the year; babies are usually born in Spring, around October, so she is a product of an out of season mating).
The residents weren't home, but arranged for the babysitter to open up the home to provide access. I had no idea what I was going to find - a microbat a flying-fox either adult or juvenile, or any other creature...
So on arrival, I find little Tafia (tafia is a kind of rum made from (black) molasses) lying mostly curled up on the back doormat.
The terrace house was long and skinny and had many places where there was nowhere for a little batty to climb to get enough height to fly out.
Tafia is too young to be released as a hard release, so she will remain in care until she can be transported north for release or the batties return to Sydney so we can release them here.
Tafia continues to do well in care and is hanging out with Quai, Derek, and Jenner, and the other Black (also called an Alecto) in that cage.
Happy days kids...
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.

A nice Teddy to cuddle and cozy blankie! Life is good
And glucose and juice too lol.🖤🇨🇦
Meg... you are so good with your batties! This rescue was fantastic. little Tafia was constantly assured that you were there to help... constant conversation, glucose, fluids, and most importantly your love! Please keep sharing your rescues.
I agree completely 🖤🇨🇦
She is so smart. I don't think that I have ever seen them associate good stuff with the glucose tube so fast.
The young ones usually learn quickly and judge my by my actions and the glucose rather than being particularly wary
3:11 love. Just no way anyone can't fall instantly in love. What a sweetheart.
Lots of love from Manchester newhampshire . USA
Meg, I love it when you talk to bats. I always wait for them to answer you. In a verbal sense.., because they always answer you non-verbally! They know you are helping them. This can be seen, for example, after Tafia found glucose herself!
Smart girl, Tafia
I just love the little Black Batties. She is adorable.
I love when they pop their little faces out of the blanket like HELLO! Makes me laugh every time. Lovely girl
Me too.🖤🇨🇦
Thanks Meg. Another life reprieved from the brink!
She's absolutely gorgeous
She really liked the glucose. What a gorgeous little girl.
She liked the juice too, and ever so sweetly lapped away at both…no fanging, great table manners.🖤🇨🇦
She's a good girl 🙂
Little Tafia is so cute. 🥺 Bless. Happy to see she's doing well in care. 😊
That was so cute when you flipped her over to do the subcut fluids, and the glucose tube was within range of her little snout! More of this please! And you were so sweet to indulge her! Thanks for what you do. And for the videos of what you do.
Just a quick word and not meaning to be picky but the word is subQ which is a short form for subcutaneous which means just under the skin. I work in medical.😁😁😊😊.
That was very cute indeed!!
@@marionmuolo9321 I get what you’re saying… but from context, did you get the idea that I *didn’t* know that the term I used (subcut) is short for subcutaneous?
Also, I don’t work in medical, so I’m not hung up on “proper abbreviations.” Maybe your textbooks say subQ, but since Meg herself says “subcut fluids” quite often… I’m more inclined to stick with what works in context rather than be a stickler about the terms. I used to be more of that kind of stickler before I turned 50. Now context seems more important. Cheers!
@@stvbrsn I worked in medicine and subcut was a common term used (I’m in the UK).
Little Tafia was like "Ooh, sweet-water, can I have more?"
It always amazes me how intelligent they are. They come in terrified and within a matter of hours they understand that you are a friend and are helping them. Absolutely Brilliant!❤❤
The level of cuteness is killing me 😁 thanks for taking care of this sweethearts! 🙏🏼💖
I just loved watching this sweet little baby get help ❤️❤️❤️
Oh she is so smart and beautiful bright eyes... Tafia know just where the yummy food was. She could not be in a better place with a wonderful person.
So lovely to watch, thankyou for sharing
What a beautiful black beauty she is , & another blessing for them , & you ... 😍🖤🦇
I had a black poodle named Murphy. He died 4 years ago and I still miss him. These bats faces and eyes look so much like him.
Sorry about Murphy; you will always miss him but by missing him you will be remembering him.
@@Megabattie ❤️
The more I watch you the more I really appreciate you. Thank your for Your Heart.
thanks
Hallelujah, a wonderful sweet survivor!
She is adorable!🥰 With those beautiful eyes!😍Glad she is now in your care, the best! Thank you for the video!💝
Aw she’s a little beauty with big, bright eyes. I’m so glad to hear she’s doing well. Great job Meg.
She's bossing the cage now
🤣
@@Megabattie😂
She’s a beautiful battie! 💖
Glad to hear Tafia is doing well now that she’s with the others she will be fine… great job Mega! I’m happy when there’s a survivor..❤️🦇🦇🦇🦇
Another beautiful bat
"There is no biting Meg"...she is so adorable.
Nobody takes any notice of Meg's dictums; they will always bite if they feel the need, and I will always cope.
Those big, round beautiful eyes! Did she finish off that tube of glucose? So very dainty, no savage attacks on you or the tube. This one is going to be a heart grabber💖
She got my heart right away.🖤🇨🇦
Gorgeous contrast of black fur with white teeth.
Yet another perfect name too!👍🥰
Auntie Meg knows how to take excellent care of precious little princesses! Just ask around....
She's so beautiful....I love her name too! What a bright-eyed little battie 🥰
Poor little gorgeous baby. She's helpless and just has to go along with her captor. Thank God it's Meg and her angels. They will see her through this ordeal. As they always do. So thankful to you all.
Such a sweet little cutie! Thank you for taking care of her!
How adorable! Thank-you for your work!
Gorgeous baby. 💜
Gorgeous little sheila that 1
shes a stunner!! i think the nom noms with the tongue sticking out is my fav thing that the batties do.. it makes me go all mushy lol (that aint easy to manage!)
She got me from the first moment, so beautiful. When she saw the glucose tube after having some, and stretched out for it I was smitten. Great table manners too.🖤🇨🇦
@@tamarrajames3590 yeah she figured out where the yummy glucose came from pretty damn fast. "more please, just gotta get the lid off" lol
How beautiful she is, and so dear. She figured out the glucose gel tube “blossom” in a snap, faster than I’ve seen before. Looked like she decided that with such loaded blossoms about, why bother with the work of chewing fruit. All good wishes to little bright-eyed Talfia. Yet another ace name, by the way.
The bit with the glucose tube was awesome, she is a clever little girl, as well as beautiful.🖤🇨🇦
What a beautiful walkway...
"I hate you! Don't touch me!...Oooo, that tastes sweet. Ok, maybe I won't kill you. I will just take a nap on this fuzzy stuffed.bear.". LOL
It must be very confusing for the little ones to come into care and be treated well. They understand that capture might be horrible, but they don't think it might be OK.
Oh Meg, you always make me want to give them a hug. So sweet.
She has such big innocent eyes, so sweet and you just want to cuddle her and make her better. Poor little thing. So glad that she made it to you before anything else were to happen to her.
That little flying fox definitely has a sweet tooth! More glucose!
You are simply amazing with your bats Meg, lots of love from Canada. 🧡🇨🇦🦇😊🍁
Tafia is secure and feels safe with your ministrations
Awww, snippy princess.
We all love a happy ending! What a cutie she is (I'm partial to the little black face)!
Ohh, that glucose is hitting the spot
Re-watching in 03/2024. Beautiful Tafia is so very lucky to have had the Meg love and care!🖤🦇🤗💓
Tagus is a beauty!!🫠🥰❤️🦇🇨🇦
So much love and care
Such beautiful intelligent eyes❤️
Sweet Sweet baby
Aw, she's a total cutie! And quite addicted to the glucose gel once she got a taste it seems. 🥰 Great to hear she's doing well in care; I'm sure she will be MUCH better equipped to handle the big wide world on her second attempt once she's a little bit bigger and older!
She will be in care until someone is driving north where she can be released in Spring with other late babies, or if our colony returns she may be able to be released with the other Blacks through the release cage near the colony.
Tafia is beyond gorgeous!!!🖤 Lovely eyes peeking out of the blankie!!🦇💕 You are their Angel & I thank you "as always", for EVERYTHING you do for them!!!🥰 Later I will toast to her good health & yours w/Bacardi rum🥃😉
Oh my gosh she is adorable.
Awwwwwwwwww 😘🦇🦇🦇🦇❤I love how you talk to your batties.🦇❣
I like to talk to them and offer a continually reassuring tone of voice so they associate my voice with me and my actions rather than being scared if I talk when I have been silent.
I also talk for the video
Yay, another survivor!
What a sweetheart
She is such a beauty and so sweet, listening to you and knowing you were there for her, thank you, you are amazing and batties too.
Wouldn’t you just love be inside her head for this whole process? At first complete fear. I don’t know what’s going on and I’m going to bite you. Then confusion. I don’t know what’s going on but this is delicious. Pretty soon it’s like, I don’t ever want to leave this wonderful giant who keeps putting delicious things in my mouth.
I really do wonder what they think and how they process the entire event.
She is so beautiful. always happy when the MOP wants it rescued. Very lovely indeed

I suspect mostly they wanted the bat gone.
They haven't phoned or asked how she is doing.
@@Megabattie i suspect the same thing!! On the contrary i want the bats are rescued!!!
7:30 what a clever trick 👍☺️
What a little cutie 💓 I'm so glad to be back and see Tafia she is stunning 😍 Meg you're still amazing and we know what you do is hard work, but you are helping them so much...I believe people that help especially animals and children will have a happy afterlife. 😊 Know you are loved and prayed for 🥰🙏
Meg love love watching your video i learn alot from your channel thank you for doing what you do for them and what you do great job meg .
YAY! I love survivors! Good luck darlin girl!🦇💞💞🦇
She was such a hungry little thing.
I was worried at first she was seriously hurt but I'm glad she's ok and doing well.
Great news she is doing well. She certainly liked the glucose gel😎 Lovely seeing her fall asleep wrapped around flat teddy all warm and cozy, only earlier in the day she was lost in her thoughts as to what was going on, scared and confused as too what had happened to her🦇❤
She’s a beauty! Hope she flourishes in care, as she seems quite relaxed with you already!
Around the two minute mark...I was thinking,"hehe, you made a little battie ball" X3
Love these feel good ones😊
Oh Meg, she’s almost as beautiful as you!
You really are an angel.
Harriet xx
Hi Harriet - Meg is definitely no angel, just an average person who is lucky to be able to do something she loves.
Oh Meg!
Self deprecation will not work!
Girl! You’re a fair dinkum Aussie angel/legend!
Just gonna have to suck it up and accept this as the truth according to me!
Much love, Harriet x
@@harrietking8768 I'm not being self-deprecating, just realistic.
I like doing what I do.
Oh Meg!
I know! This is exactly why you are an angel!
How about we agree to agree!?!? Lol
H xx
that face ! the fangies... those eyes... >smitten
She's young - has good teeth and most of her adult teeth have come in now she's 12 weeks old.
Poor little lady. She had a tiring day. I am so glad you could help her, Meg.
So glad this is a happy rescue! Tafia is such a pretty baby!
Tafia seems so soothed by your gentle voice and yummy glucose! 🦇🩹💗
Hooray! Another adorable survivor ❤️ 😇❤️🎉🦇🖤❤️
One of the cutest yet! Her eyes are really lovely.
I want to kiss that baby sooo badly! 😭
She' s so sweet , She likes all that you give her, . The name Is perfect!! In Italy the same rum Is called Ratafià ( from black cherries)
Glad she is doing well!
Aww that's a really good batty . I'm sure it will be happy to join the others in the big play pen player on.
I can't describe how adorable this all is😇😇😇💜💙🧡💜💙🧡
She knew where that yummy glaucous was as soon as ypu put her down ❤ poor little lady , those bog beautiful eyes are like pools of ink, so beautiful ❤
She’s so cute when she inadvertently sees the tube of glucose and decides to help herself. Then you take her out of the incubator and she looks at you like “Oh it’s you, The-Bringer-of-Good-Stuff”. Bright eyed little girl.🥰
yes it was funny and cute.
It’s amazing how quickly they adjust to you & not try to bite after only a few hours. Actually, she stopped trying to bite when you gave her subcut, even before the incubator nap.
She's still young enough to be a little more trusting than the adults.
Bat lickies and nom noms. So much cuter than hooman nom noms!
It’s her lucky day.🍀🍀🇺🇸😁🥰
Sweet little ebony fox face. 🥰
You’re so wonderful to rescue these cuties. 🙏🏼 I love all of the detail you give I your descriptions, even including who the MOP was letting you in.
I like tell the story and for you to be able to experience the rescue as I do, from my point of view.
When I;m having an awful day, I too would like to be swaddled, held, and given food till I feel better 🥺
Tafia: FEAR ME!!
Also Tafia: GLUCOSE!! Nom nom 😋
Tafia is adorable. Glad to read that she's doing well. Thanks, Meg!💗🙏🦇
Tafia is so cute
Hang in there Tafia.
Lucky batty
She is indeed and is hanging out bossing around the boys in her cage.
Aww my this little one is just so beautiful and a super quick learner.
I didn't read the report first to see that Tafia was doing well and when I saw her lying there i thought it would be bad. what a relief! She's gorgeous.
She's gorgeous and it's a total surprise that she's OK
