You could probably squeeze like 2x more performance out of it, but they’re going to see huge diminishing returns on time spent vs IPC improvements. This is what Intel is currently doing with their 14nm and 10nm chips, but look where that’s got them. They’ve spent so long on 14nm that they forgot they can get the same IPC improvements faster by moving to a smaller node. AMD realized this so they jumped the gun on 7nm (and are about to go to 5nm), and they’re really reaping the benefits right now.

@@darthvalkyr scalpers piss me off too. Especially with stuff like this. Peoples livelyhoods can quite often depend on them getting these parts as soon as possible. When the nintendo switch launched, I checked every retailer within 200 miles of my house, and no one had it. I ended up paying $430(the cheapest I could find. Most were asking around $550) to a scalper that was also trying to scalp copies of Breathe of the Wild, which didn't even have stock issues. With a game console it's not the end of the world. It's still scummy as all hell, but whatever. You can always just wait for stock to come in. With serious hardware like this, it's infuriating. Someone's ability to effectively do there job can be seriously hindered by these assholes.

Even though I get what you are trying to say Intel will most likely do a comeback. Probably when they reach 7nm but I would expect a comeback atleast within 3-5 years since we already know that the upcoming is 14nm and wont win their throne back. AMD was afterall behind them for how many years and was almost bankrupt but here we are.

"10nm ported back to 14nm" means original design goals were to design for 10nm, but there was no competitive and/or profitable reason to use 10nm, cost benefit analysis says 14nm was better for profits.
Not entirely true, 10 nm means More Chips per Wafer also Less power Per Watt which are Both Selling points and can increase Profits OVER 14 nm its why AMD moved to it and Why Intel Has been trying and failing to hit that goal which they set for themselves Years ago.
Also, it's not a straight backport, part of the architecture have to be removed to fit on 14nm. Intel had to backport to 14nm from 10nm, it wasn't a choice.
If we're talking about Intel, the far more likely cause it that yields on the 10nm process have been sub-par and not enough to meet target goals for all markets. It's partially why Intel has only, for the most part, targeted low power chips/laptop chips for the 10nm chipset.
Well if you remember, way way back in the day AMD used to be more powerful even without being clocked the same as intel. That's been so long now that a lot of people may not know about it anymore. Most people now just remember how poor AMD performed right around the time of the multi core revolution with the fx line

i wanted the 5800x but decided to get the 3800x instead a few weeks ago due to a catastrophic failure and I now feel cheated :( I didn't think that I'd be able to snag a 5800x either on launch day

Idk how. I was going for the 5900x and it literally went from not on the site to out of stock. The 5600x lasted for like 30 minutes but that’s it. I do have a plan to get one but we will see. I’m building a brand new system so it seems that with all the new tech it won’t be built until next year. I can’t really wait either, I’m on a GTX 970 and a i7-4770k.

So I kind of find it hard to believe that Intel is having super duper mega ultra trouble "finding & applying" the next batch of fab tricks for its next shrinking process, while AMD seemingly and "magically" would have clear coasting blue skies with strong back wind? come on, both companies are fighting against the same physics limitations, and using from the same "pool" of engineering science. In other words: both have to buy their sailboat from the same store (fabbing scientific advances), and are more or less on the same spot in the ocean (same problems to face). If one is facing a storm, so does the other. Intel's problem though is that it's chips are now so incredibly complex, this slows down dev time a lot. Yay for bureaucracy! but that is CPU design. For the "base" ## nm process, both companies are facing around the same physical limits. I wonder if there is a detailed article or video that explains in depth all the differences between all these "## nm" sizes.
thats not true, it took, the combined weight of th e3 companys to finally beat Intel. And its not like their that far ahead. If Intel uses TSMC to get to 7nM, its a tick/tock one faster than the other, like AMD and NVDA.
Over the past 20+ years, I've bought nothing but AMD for my main desktop. I always wanted to support the underdog to keep the competition. Does this mean I need to switch to Intel?
nah....I've been using AMD since Duron.... yeah... Intel was better than my FX8350, but I already had the motherboard with the Phenom II.... Glad I stuck around, like others. If not for "us", we would still be using 4 core CPU's.
My friend stood up all night and couldnt get one. I just gave up and went with a 10700k since i only use pc for games. It's 120 euros cheaper and only 2% slower than 5800x. It is hot as hell tho.
Waited in line for 16 hours. Disappointed when my local micro center only got 5 5900x’s in total. I was #36 in line out of 220 people. Luckily I got a 5800X, unlucky but still grateful! My first PC ever is gonna have some great parts!
@@sogetsu60 depends on the game. 5800x gets 25% higher FPS in heavy cpu-bound games like Valorant and CSGO but only gets 5-10% in most other titles. But I mean, who’s really gonna notice the difference between 600 and 750 fps anyways...

@@darklight8675 thanks best buy isn't really an option outside the US. only the large international stores shipping here are Newegg (out of stock), and Amazon (which charges ridiculous shipping fees). and local stores usually sell at a 40-50% markup so yeah... Newegg is pretty much the only reasonable option.

@@escarretada I don't believe consoles have access to all cores for gaming last I read, could be wrong. That being said, if later down the road you need to go 8 cores for whatever reason there are clearly options to upgrade. A lot more flexibility on an AM4 socket vd LGA 1200 right now.

Hey. I am aiming at that level of hardware next build. I can tell you I am happy with a 1080p monitor. I will eventually go to 1440p, but on things to do, it isn't all that high on my list. Getting new peripherals is higher on the list, as is getting stuff done around the house. Upgrading my monitor to 1440p is a minor concern for me.
I'm kinda the same way. I've never been able to play a modern game at max everything even right back to the original Half Life, had to turn stuff down on the family computer. With the way my current build is slowly evolving I would rather comfortably run 1080p with maximum everything on a higher refresh rate monitor than run 1440p with settings turned down.
Getting a 4k monitor was the best upgrade ever since I build my first PC in 2002, and I am still using a 750ti that can't play anything but Factorio at this resoluiton. Any use outside games greatly benefits a better monitor if you do use it for things outside gaming.
Do not worry, AMD just finally caught up again, happened before, Intel will hit with their true next gen and will pound AMD into the floor boards. Lest We Forget the Core 2 Duo.

I'm a 1950 owner too and I'm fine with it. Gotten years of solid work out of this machine, it's kind of silly to compare price or performance to a product that came out so much later. Besides which, one of the main reasons I went Threadripper in the first place was for the extra PCIe lanes, which I actually am using. So this wouldn't really be an upgrade in that regard...
It's amazing that AMD has come back that far, took them a while to beat intel at gaming but they did it, at least with low resolution which is sadly less current with the new vga better at supporting 4k, just can't wait to see what intel will do to compete with that, I have no dedication for any companys i just love competition and its looking good for next year.

Probably when they reach 7nm but I would expect a comeback atleast within 3-5 years since we already know that the upcoming is 14nm and wont win their throne back. "10nm ported back to 14nm" means original design goals were to design for 10nm, but there was no competitive and/or profitable reason to use 10nm, cost benefit analysis says 14nm was better for profits.
Not entirely true, 10 nm means More Chips per Wafer also Less power Per Watt which are Both Selling points and can increase Profits OVER 14 nm its why AMD moved to it and Why Intel Has been trying and failing to hit that goal which they set for themselves Years ago.
Also, it's not a straight backport, part of the architecture have to be removed to fit on 14nm. Intel had to backport to 14nm from 10nm, it wasn't a choice.
If we're talking about Intel, the far more likely cause it that yields on the 10nm process have been sub-par and not enough to meet target goals for all markets. It's partially why Intel has only, for the most part, targeted low power chips/laptop chips for the 10nm chipset.

Well if you remember, way way back in the day AMD used to be more powerful even without being clocked the same as intel. That's been so long now that a lot of people may not know about it anymore. Most people now just remember how poor AMD performed right around the time of the multi core revolution with the fx line

Idk how. I was going for the 5900x and it literally went from not on the site to out of stock. The 5600x lasted for like 30 minutes but that’s it. I do have a plan to get one but we will see. I’m building a brand new system so it seems that with all the new tech it won’t be built until next year. I can’t really wait either, I’m on a GTX 970 and a i7-4770k.

And what about Intel's 14+++nm vs AMD's 7 nm? This is a pretty limited industry, i.e. all players and talent know each other.
So I kind of find it hard to believe that Intel is having super duper mega ultra trouble "finding & applying" the next batch of fab tricks for its next shrinking process, while AMD seemingly and "magically" would have clear coasting blue skies with strong back wind?
come on, both companies are fighting against the same physics limitations, and using from the same "pool" of engineering science. In other words: both have to buy their sailboat from the same store (fabbing scientific advances), and are more or less on the same spot in the ocean (same problems to face). If one is facing a storm, so does the other.
Intel's problem though is that it's chips are now so incredibly complex, this slows down dev time a lot. Yay for bureaucracy! but that is CPU design. For the "base" ## nm process, both companies are facing around the same physical limits.
I wonder if there is a detailed article or video that explains in depth all the differences between all these "## nm" sizes.

nah....I've been using AMD since Duron.... yeah... Intel was better than my FX8350, but I already had the motherboard with the Phenom II.... Glad I stuck around, like others. If not for "us", we would still be using 4 core CPU's.

My friend stood up all night and couldnt get one. I just gave up and went with a 10700k since i only use pc for games. It's 120 euros cheaper and only 2% slower than 5800x. It is hot as hell tho.

Waited in line for 16 hours. Disappointed when my local micro center only got 5 5900x’s in total. I was #36 in line out of 220 people. Luckily I got a 5800X, unlucky but still grateful! My first PC ever is gonna have some great parts!
@@sogetsu60 depends on the game. 5800x gets 25% higher FPS in heavy cpu-bound games like Valorant and CSGO but only gets 5-10% in most other titles. But I mean, who’s really gonna notice the difference between 600 and 750 fps anyways...

@@escarretada I don't believe consoles have access to all cores for gaming last I read, could be wrong. That being said, if later down the road you need to go 8 cores for whatever reason there are clearly options to upgrade. A lot more flexibility on an AM4 socket vd LGA 1200 right now.

Hey. I am aiming at that level of hardware next build. I can tell you I am happy with a 1080p monitor. I will eventually go to 1440p, but on things to do, it isn't all that high on my list. Getting new peripherals is higher on the list, as is getting stuff done around the house. Upgrading my monitor to 1440p is a minor concern for me.
I'm kinda the same way. I've never been able to play a modern game at max everything even right back to the original Half Life, had to turn stuff down on the family computer. With the way my current build is slowly evolving I would rather comfortably run 1080p with maximum everything on a higher refresh rate monitor than run 1440p with settings turned down.
Agree 1080p with high refresh rates more than sufficient for me.
Aside from gaming, 1440p is totally worth it.
Getting a 4k monitor was the best upgrade ever since I build my first PC in 2002, and I am still using a 750ti that can't play anything but Factorio at this resoluiton. Any use outside games greatly benefits a better monitor if you do use it for things outside gaming.
I remember when my RAM was 16MB. Now the cache is bigger than that. 😁

Over the last 25 years I've seen AMD have the lead a couple of times. Intel will be back, that you can be sure of.

I'm a 1950 owner too and I'm fine with it. Gotten years of solid work out of this machine, it's kind of silly to compare price or performance to a product that came out so much later.
Besides which, one of the main reasons I went Threadripper in the first place was for the extra PCIe lanes, which I actually am using. So this wouldn't really be an upgrade in that regard...

It's amazing that AMD has come back that far, took them a while to beat intel at gaming but they did it, at least with low resolution which is sadly less current with the new vga better at supporting 4k, just can't wait to see what intel will do to
compete with that, I have no dedication for any companys i just love competition and its looking good for next year.
