    • The Untold Story of Le... -~-
John Stockton is considered one of the top 5 or even top 2 NBA point guards of ALL TIME. And the evidence is all right there...right? All time assist leader - multiple time all star and NBA first team selection. He also rarely missed a game in his 19 year career. He made it to the finals multiple times, and the only reason he didn't win it all is because he ran up against the Jordan phenomenon. But wait... is there a particular play we remember from John (well that one winning three pointer in the playoffs against the suns) but as an all time great point guard, there's got to be a slew of dibbling and passing highlights we all remember, and of course he had to be a master ball handler...right?...right? ummmm well turns out it's more complicated then that... and that's our starting off point.

I’d imagine you’d see most players having dominant hand when put under scrutiny. This whole investigation seems like it could be done about any player...seems like stockckton is singled out here simply cause he thought of this while watching a video of him 🤷‍♂️

He has highlights involving the left hand where he takes one dribble to the left and then picks up the ball. As someone who is embarrassingly right-hand dominant, I can do the same thing. Between the legs, crossovers left-right and right-left, as long as it's *one* left-handed dribble and then a pull up or two steps, I'm fine. I recognize so many cheats in Stockton's game that I also use. What's hard to do: Going around a pick to your left, staying low, and keeping the dribble low and away from the defender. Show me
Stockton dribbling left around a screen with more than one dribble.

@@jamesr3505 that's an oddly specific request. He didn't need two dribbles to get to the basket. ua-cam.com/video/myMvojT6zIc/v-deo.html from 22 seconds in you see him driving left with his left hand several times. Your point about him being unusually one handed for an all time player is fair, but your claim is much too strong in my opinion.

The NBA Storyteller The first highlight video I clicked on showed a highlight of Stockton crossing over between his legs from left to right and blowing past Steve Francis @ Houston, then finishing the layup with his left hand.
You need to get a better understanding of the game before posting videos like this or you’re gonna lose all credibility. I’ve been around the game for almost 30 years. It takes time to truly understand the game of basketball. Idk... maybe make videos about other sports that you understand better 🤷🏼‍♂️

This clown watched ONE highlight reel from ONE game from 1988, Stockton's fourth season, and from that concluded that Stockton never used his left hand?!?!
And he made a 22 minute video talking about that 9 minute highlight reel?
Add that to the easily disprovable claims (mixing up Phoenix with Houston), and he has no credibility.
He claims in the video that people are now realizing that assists are "questionable", but the opposite is true. Advanced analytics are demonstrating more and more that scoring off of assists is MUCH easier and MUCH more efficient than creating your own shot.
He says you must have a great teammate in order to lead the league in assists, but he ignores the fact that those teammates benefit greatly from having an elite passer on the team. It is not a coincidence that the top 2 leading scorers of all time were long-term teammates of the top 2 passers of all time, and unlike the chicken and the egg, advanced analytics have proven which caused which.

oh shut the fuck up. he#s bashing Stockton hard, saying that the assists are only a result of working with the big guy all those years, like anybody with two hands could have done what Stockton did. It's all blah blah, hindsight, applying "new analysis of assists" to the past and a great player. Analysis of an era he never even witnessed. Analysis of games is for wankers
Analysis of the quality of 80's ballers is a wankfest by definition. "ali would have beat Tyson". who cares? I don't. Most significantly he ignores what great players said about Stockton being top 2 pg. Brushes over those statements and nitpicks details that in the end didn't matter. Stockton got the job done. in the NBA . On a small market team
The little fuck aint even a baller, and he chooses to ignore the only opinions that count, the guys that played with and against Stockton. . he's full of shit, and he ignores Payton's statement that Stockton was harder to guard than MJ.

Stockton had a vision of the game that was two and three steps ahead of everyone else. He set up most of his plays on the left side of the court to get Karl Malone ISO for a screen... The Flex system that Sloan ran had 3 or 4 options for him to navigate once he stopped the dribble... For him it was a chess match and he drew guys in, then 99% of the time dished it off to wide open guy... leaving the other team scratching their heads. NBA players such as Gary Payton said he was harder to guard than Jordan. (Not saying he could score like MJ, but he could pick apart defenses). Stockton was a no- nonsense, tough SOB, that out smarted just about everyone... and he did it with fundamentals, grit and preparation.... and yet to your point, he did it with his left hand tied behind his back...

    • @Drogon7102
      @Drogon7102 3 роки тому +4

Yes, but the fact he had to stop his dribble in the same spot no less and he often passed to the same man gets predictable. Which is why he never had any real post season success until after he stopped hunting for assists. And Gary Payton started much later on in Stockton's career when he had the 10 years of chemistry with a player to pretty much know how they play. Many NBA point guards probably would have played similarly in Stockton's shoes. Since they have added deception of half decent dribble moves.

I like your video style but do not like the disrespect on John. Find another basketball player from his era that brought in a consistent game night in and night out, doesn't matter if he was stuck on the left side of the court, you cannot exploit a weakness to take away from someone's greatness. Stockton's story is already told. History is already made. It does not matter how he did it. Damn, I don't even like the Jazz but I loved watching Stockton and Malone and basketball from that era.

He wouldn't go from that to crossover god no matter how many games he went through. There are so many other problems with this comment I could go into detail about but, I dont want to write a novel about how bad and wrong you you are so...

Hahaha, very entertaining video but unfortunately if people watch Stockton play for themselves (not just a handful of highlights) they'll realize that a lot of this simply isn't true. I love going back and watching 80's and 90's basketball, as I have watched the 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1997 nba all star games this week. After hearing the claims about Stockton rarely using his left or going to his left, I decided to watch Stockton with more scrutiny, as I wondered why it didn't stick out to me before like Jerry West. Well I noticed that Stockton goes to his left and uses his left way more than this narrative led me to believe. He definitely favors his right, but he definitely looks comfortable using and going to his left when he does (which is way more than you had me think, smh). I also watched a random full Jazz game to make sure 1994 Jazz vs Nuggets Game 5, and yeah same thing, using his left way more than we were led to believe. Still though entertaining videos, keep up the good work. But kids, don't just take another person's word for it.

I think the point is he was very right handed 🤚🏾. Not that he didn’t have a left. Let’s be clear the man held it down at his position. But another point is the assist record. He’s saying the criteria for an assist should be looked at. And he wouldn’t have had such an amazing career without the mailman. Let’s put it another way... He was steady, solid, and white, and he played in UTAH. A place where the N word gets thrown at players more then the bounce pass. I don’t fault him for that. But let’s not make Stock into something he wasn’t. After all. If it wasn’t for MJ. Isaiah Thomas would’ve and should’ve been on the dream team. Not Johnny Stock....

      @johnnyblingg 5 років тому +6

Alastair Chung-Jones Yeah you can’t get an accurate read at how good a played was by just looking at highlight reels. You have to watch the games in full.
Like I didn’t realize how great Larry Bird was, but then I went back and watched some games against the Lakers, Pistons, 76ers, and Bulls. Only then did I truly understand his impact.

If you watch a game you can watch game 5 of the 1999 playoffs. Jason Williams was benched had 2 points 3 assists. John Stockton took him to the left side of the court and they iso Stockton vs Williams and he took him left like 3 times and J-will got a foul on all 3. He also got a foul where John put his left hand in J-will body and went around a screen.
The video is funny but his example is a game where they have 2 seconds and the man who doubled didn't get to the top of the key. But ok good stuff

The biggest point against the claim that Stockton's status being completely dependent on Malone: He averaged 5 assists a game as a backup point guard playing 18 minutes a game his rookie season. Malone wasn't drafted until the following year. All this video does is point out that John Stockton apparently had a weakness; a weakness that for some reason some of the best players that ever played the game were unable to exploit. All this suggests is that perhaps he could have been even better had he developed his left. However, if anything it is a credit to him that he was able to do all that he did despite this weakness. At one point Michael Jordan couldn't shoot the three. It's a credit to him that he developed it. However, even if he hadn't, I think he would still be considered the greatest. Finally, the idea that John Stockton stayed quiet to control the narrative is BS. John Stockton never promoted himself. Never has he made a claim that he deserves the status given to him. He was a classy player without a lot of fancy moves. We could use more players like that to be quite honest; let their games speak for itself. And yet, his simple style was extremely effective for 19 years. With Steph Curry changing the way the game is played, I dare say it won't be long before John Stockton, Isiah Thomas, and other greats from the 80s and 90s will be removed from the list of the top five. Magic Johnson may be the one exception. But he was the real deal. By the way, Johns Stockton is also on the list of top 50 scorers just ahead of Bernard King. So by his own standard, the author is implying that Stockton is an all time great.

There was a point in this video where I almost started thinking, wow...this dude is on to something...then...
"John Stockton lacked so many Point Guarding skills"
    15,806 Assists
    3,265 Steals
Career Ave 13.1 pt 10.5 ast 2.2 stl
    996 Regular Season Wins
What did this guy mean to the team? In 1998, the second Finals year he missed the first 18 games of the season. The Jazz went 11-7 without him. 51-13 the rest of the way.
    "He was a minimum required"
That was the single most idiotic statement of the video.
He's probably the best guard to ever play the game, the best point guard to ever play the game." -Bobby Jackson
"He's probably the best pure point guard to play the game . . . He's about efficiency and making people better. That's why he's played for 19 years."- Kenny Smith
"I've always said that John Stockton is one of the five best players I ever played against."- Charles Barkley
"John Stockton was a harder player to guard than Michael Jordan" - Gary Payton (ok, that one is pretty far fetched)
"John is the smartest player I have ever seen, he suckers guys to do what he wants them to do, each and every night" - Jeff Hornacek
"He never took 5 dribbles, when 3 would do" - Frank Layden
"In my opinion, John Stockton was the greatest. I had the opportunity to see what he was about every single game."- Jerry Sloan
Yeah, you are right...the dude is over rated...none of those men I quoted know sh** about basketball.

i think you're taking it a step too far - is John a top 2 guard? in my eyes he's maybe 6 - i never said he was trash or useless - to the contrary i actual recognize he was good. But honestly, quotes from one player about another, that is collected for publication (tv or print)will go one of two ways, Overwhelming praise OR passive insults, so i appreciate the quotes but i would love to hear what idk, Jordan said about John back in the locker room. Also, I think you may actually agree with me, that he didn't really have a comfortable left. And to restate the premise, when i realized that, it blew my mind, as I always assumed he would have been a master ball handler - not flashy, but very sound, which would include a flourishing left.
ALSO, Karl was special, he didn't pound the ball - when most big men back then would take a moment to set up, karl went into this moves AND that alone will greatly increase the amount of numbers in the numbers buckets we count
again, follow the premise, it's not a stockton is garbage video - it's a discovery of what was going on, on the court. Regardless, thank you for watching and especially for your input!

You know what always baffled me about Stockton? As slow as he was he somehow would normally get by his opponents with ease without any fancy crossovers or shake and bake moves, and that opponents would back off of him far enough that he could he could stop his dribble several feet within the three point line.

Idk bro, you're dismissing a legend as a decent/basic point guard. But before I go further longevity does mean something. 19 years as a 6'1" pg and retiring at 40 is incredible to say the least. Not being able to go left just shows how dominant he was. 51% fgp. 82% ftp. 10.5 APG. But the most important stats. W. He made the playoffs every single season he played with always having a winning record. Magic(still the greatest pg all time) couldn't shoot, didn't have a cross. Isiah quit early(he would've been the best ever). Chris Paul has never even made the Conference Finals let alone a finals. JS made it 5 times with 2 Finals appearances. Steve Nash never made the finals.
Top 5 I'd go Magic, Isiah, John, Jason, Steve.Gary Payton has a strong argument but I would still put him 6th. (Chris Paul might go in here depends if he can win a few rings, and Steph Curry has the chance to go down as the greatest ever if he can stay this way for years to come).

    • @hitchhiker3173
      @hitchhiker3173 6 років тому +5

Brandon Larranaga I'm pretty sure pistol Pete, jerry west, and oscar robertson were left out. Iverson though you could argue he stole his team's shooting gaurd spot while playing the point. You're forgetting tony parker maybe and gary payton should be up there as well. Steph and kyrie probably as well by the time they're done playing. Maybe bob cousy has a place there (although him and oscar are pretty ancient, but they have more championships for sure and so do magic, west and isiah). Kevin johnson was killer at the time (and fun to watch, even had a pretty good dunk lol). And don't forget russel westbrook and derrick rose either, if you're talking about a would have been num 1 career. If you look at all of that I think stockton should be somewhere between 10 to 20 on your list, and he had a good career and was smart and an achiever, maybe in the top 10 of achievers, but if you look at other achievments like championships and abillity to take a team's play on your back, you'd have to bump him a few places, and to my taste there are alot more interesting names on that list. (and you'd have to think if a more skilled PG would have stole a ring or 2 from jordan with malone at his side, which was just a monster in the paint with crazy talent.. which no one ever asks or considers, because stockton was after all an excellent PG overall.. but what if you put kidd, or nash or paul next to him, or if you put payton next to him back in both of their primes? Are you sure they would'nt have more achievments with malone, besides a crazy assist rate? Like a few championships. I'm not saying for sure, but you gotta ask yourself).

His assists are because he had a behemoth of a man always secure post and all he had to do was give it to him while noy making that opening tk pass himself. His team throughout his career had like 0-2 assists with only karl having 2. Thats ehy tbey never one a title. .
this was a world-shattering revelation, at first. john stockton is my third-favorite point guard of all time, and he's honestly the first pg off my bench. i've grown used to being made fun of for liking him so much, but now i'm starting to wonder, are all those people who have told me i'm dumb, actually right? this presentation of yours left me right where i didn't want to be, second guessing my younger self, figuratively dead-to-rights, looking back to see what's left of my NBA fandom that stretches right back to the good old days of late-80s and early 90s short-shorts-donning, no-zone-defense-playing, flagrant-fouls-are-a-fact-of-life-so-don't-expect-a-whistle OMG how could this man not ever go left? he's like zoolander! and nobody ever noticed. i feel like i'm taking crazy pills. but, without yet getting into the MJ conspiracy, allow me to just state this simple fact about loving sports-entertainment in the form of NBA basketball: you don't have to be a complete player to make it to the NBA. yes, you would think that a point guard should possess the ability to go both right and left, but let's be real here, all you have to be good at, is whatever you are good at. and then the trick is to be better at it than almost every other person alive. know what i mean? if you own your offensive skill set, and you also happen to be tall and agile enough to at least look like you're playing defense, AND you also are privileged enough from a socio-economic/class standpoint to have access and exposure to athletic programs at the youth and/or collegiate levels, then chances are, you'll be able to make it as a professional or semi-professional basketball player. i speak from personal experience. so all i'm saying is, no man is perfect. john stockton may have been a god among dime-droppers, but all that really means is the guy had faulty pockets. name any elite NBA player, and i will be able to name someone who can point out flaws in their game. yes, some flaws are more glaring than others, but a flaw is a flaw, am i right? actually, i'm ambidextrous. but if you watched me play basketball, you'd think was just sleep deprived.
    .
this does make me wonder, will we ever see an NBA player with literally, physically, only one hand? i mean, john stockton has to make you believe it's certainly possible, right? julius randle figuratively has no right hand, and he's doing alright for himself. so maybe it's only a matter of time before a one-handed player emerges from the shadows and takes us all by the hand, and leads us into a new golden age of equal opportunity in professional sports-entertainment. this will be an age where you can go in any direction you choose, as long as it's the one direction everyone knows you're going to go, based on your physical limitations. but seriously, what's left after that? am i not right to think that we will have collectively arrived, so to speak, once there's a one-handed basketball player who excels at his craft? it's like that one time we had a half-black president, who, incidentally, has no right hand on the basketball court. we've all got to play to our strengths. at least, that's what Grand-Mama used to tell me.
    .
i wonder what percentage of stockton's assists were left-handed. given the argument laid out in this video, i'd venture a guess of less than 4%. . . . . after a quick numbers crunch, i see that would still measure out to over 630 left-handed dimes dropped by the g.o.a.a.t. (greatest of all assisters, truly) - and let's be real, that's far too many. there's no way he had that many left handed dimes. so, maybe 0.4%, which would be 63 out of his 15,806 career assists. that still may be generous, but we're probably on the right track here. john jeffery stockton, he of 99.6% right hand dominance. nothing to be ashamed of, brother. have you seen roger federer's forearms? imgur.com/wxASyyM

    .
so this brings us to the first major point of this analysis-analysis. "is it deception, if nobody claimed to deceive?" the short answer is, yes. in the rhetorical battle of intent vs. effect, it is indisputable that one's intent has no bearing over the eventual interpretation of one's actions or words. yes, your intent guides the argument you build, which in turn is at the heart of what sways the minds of your audience. but, in truth, audiences/viewers/fans of the game are good at one thing, above all others, and that is to draw their own interpretations of what they see, regardless of the work that was put into developing the object/skill in question. (actually, we often don't draw our own interpretations, rather we borrow the interpretations of people who get paid by espn to think about these things for us. but still.) in other words, it doesn't matter how hard steph curry practices his midrange game, or works on his defensive skills, because there will still be people who want to believe that he's a horrible defender (which he objectively is not) and all he can do is shoot 3's (which he undoubtedly can, but he can also score from anyplace inside the arc, and obviously he excels as a playmaker when he's not turning the ball over. again, no player is perfect.) in the same vein, john stockton may have never worked on developing his left handed dribbling, he may never have felt comfortable driving to his left, or passing with his left, or giving left-handed high fives. but it really doesn't matter, because basketball fans came to know him as someone who excelled at his craft, and we gave more thought to his short shorts, than his shortcomings. feel free to use that one, i've got plenty left in the tank. we reserve the right to critique our NBA heroes, without truly being critical in our examination of them. this is what makes TNBAST special, sometimes. you're forcing us to consider our own blindness to some obvious truths. for example, that one of the greatest passers ever was really not a very good passer at all, but just some guy who was in the right place at the right time...always.
    .
also, how convenient is it to have a miniature version of yourself hanging around the house for when you need to film a flashback sequence? i should invest in one of those. then maybe i'd have someone else who could have fun with the massive collection of basketball cards i've amassed over the years. i consulted this collection just to double check the lefty sitch, and lo and behold, all of my john stockton cards featured left handed dribbling and passing. every last one of them. WHAT SENSE DOES THIS MAKE?! none at all. zilch. thanks for giving me something else to harp on.
    .
imagine if steve nash had a guy like karl malone? how about this.. let's imagine if karl malone had a guy like jason kidd! and if you will, let's also imagine more TNBAST videos with supreme postscript sendoffs like this one. it was masterful, in a word. i'm usually known around these parts for my brevity, but allow me to say a few more words. THE NBA STORYTELLER is a gift to youtube. props to bsolz and zach lee and MDJ for recognizing their godfather. newer to the game but older, but still i guess younger, for now. basketball is a game, games are meant to be fun, and TNBAST is the bringer of all things fun to this arena.

Interesting and eye opening. He played his first few seasons without Malone and still had very high assist volume per 36 (he wasn't a starter). He was also a really good, intelligent defender who would harass the shit out of you all game ala CP3.
Even taking the lack of a left hand into account he still grades really high at court vision, passing accuracy, shooting, running half court offensive sets, 1 on 1 & team defense and overall toughness/leadership.
So for me, he still grades as a top 5 all time PG.
