    • Michael Jordan and Ler... -~-
This is the FInal scene and the largest case made in the feature "No Left" but since it covered so much interesting stuff I decided to release it on its own. Here are some of the topics you will hear about:
There is only ONE stat that is common for every single championship team. John Stockton may have been Russell Westbrook before russell was even born. Isiah Thomas was the only true point guard. Michael Jordan had no left, and didn't win until he developed one. Magic Johnson is a freak AND a freak.

Stockton was a stat padder like Westbrook?
1)Westbrook has 18 FGAs while Stockton had only 9 FGAs
2)Stockton was one of the best defenders in the NBA while Westbrook doesn't even bother about playing defence. He is just waiting under the basket to get the defensive rebound.
3)So Magic was an outlier while Stockton reaching to the Finals twice wasn't?
The Utaz Jazz were such a great team that they reached to the NBA Finals. Twice. The only reason they lost was MICHAEL JORDAN. If Magic had to face 90's Bulls he would have also lost all finals just like he did in '91
For some reason you hate Stockton. Stockton was unlucky because he played the same era as Jordan did. Just like Ewing, Barkley, Malone, Reggie Miller, Kemp

@@BorbaFerreira Equating the 91 Lakers to the 80s Showtime Lakers is insane. Vlade Divac may have been as good in 91 as Jabbar was for Magic's final title in 88, but their defensive ace on the perimeter in Michael Cooper had retired, as had their defensive ace in the post in Michael Thompson. They weren't as deep. Magic was already on a slow decline himself after 87. The 96 record-breaking Bulls may have been better than any Celtics team in the 80s, although the 86 team has really strong argument. But then the 92 Bulls that won 67 games were about as great as the best Lakers team from Showtime, which I think was the 87 team. But the other 4 Bulls championship winning teams (including the 2 that beat the Jazz) were not as great as the best Lakers teams from the 80s. The 90s Bulls benefited a lot from expansion in 89 & then again in 96, diluting the competition, each paving the road to an ensuing 3-peat. If that same Bulls team came together in the early 80s instead of early 90s, pre-expansion, I feel that they would've won 3 championships instead of 6. As great as the Bulls defenses were, the 80s Lakers & Celtics had great defenses too, while the Bulls would've been a bit offensively challenged against some of those stacked rosters.

In the game where Stockton recorded 28 assists, the Jazz team completed a total of eight dribbles while those assists were being recorded. So to some degree, an assist is partially a byproduct of playing with players who don't know how to put the ball on the floor and get their own shot, and also a byproduct of being the guy who holds the ball the longest on offense. The longer you hold the ball during a possession, the more likely it is that the guy you pass the ball to HAS to shoot the ball or risk a shot-clock violation.

You know what is insane? You didn't include two HUGE rule changes. The illegal defense and hand-check rules. When hand-checks were no longer allowed guys like Pistol Pete who were innovators in the past were either gone or well beyond their physical prime. The illegal defense laxity more free dribbling because no longer could you steer a defender to a side you wanted to defend him ( why Scottie Pippen was literally disarmed as a great defender when it was banned after Jordan retired and Bulls disbanded). Suddenly the no charge rules were put in place to allow a dribbler to attack the rim without consequence of an offensive foul.
It wasn't a lack of trying but a lack of imagination by the NBA, a lack of imagination which they have been desperately trying to reverse with more and more moves which were illegal in the past ( see the Iverson crossover; if the hand was anywhere near underneath the ball it was considered a discontinued dribble). I'm no big fan of Stockton he was just a guy who competed hard, but he was in fact limited by his era ( ball security era), an era which advanced cross-overs could result in idiotic discontinued dribble calls, an era where taking the shot you wanted was considered more efficient than the run and gun style played only 25 years prior. If you look at the advanced stats you realize Stockton didn't have 100 or even 75 possessions in the game, in fact, he was at one of the lowest pace of play in the league but still managed a ton of assists by dominating the ball, Meanwhile Ervin (Magic) Johnson created so many of his assists from the controlled chaos of a fast pace and thus higher possession numbers while Westbrook (the Ultimate stat padder) had both advantages and shattered all expectation by scoring as well as distributing.
See stats can lie, it takes the context and actual viewership to judge a player. Stockton was a great player, not because he was such an advanced dribbler or he was a competitor that took advantage of the rules in place. Much like the Pistons played a sort of illegal defense that became called much more later to help Jordan or how the Celtics played illegal defense ( 3 seconds) from the weak side daring officials to call it every possession or to shoot from deep, or how the Jordan Bulls took advantage of the illegal defense rules isolated the best athlete in the NBA in isolation against defenses prevented from playing zone against him, or the LA Lakers took advantage of the physical defense hiding Magic's deficiencies on that end while utilizing his passing to unlock Kareem. How the Lebron led Heat took advantage of shooting big men and softer rules which helped guys like Nowitski and Duncan while driving to the basket, how the Cavaliers took advantage of the defensive rules and bind Lebron put defenses in ( no rim deterrent= death by Lebron), or how the Warriors took advantage of how protected jump shooters and off-ball cutters became more protected than the past. Your entire thought process is flawed, as you fail to account for the rules of the era. Watch Isaiah's games, how many times he was called for traveling or carrying then, how many times he was called for fouls which would have been flagrant in the league today, how often he hand checked ( why so many players of that era had such great upper body strength for guards). So calling one style inferior depends on the rules of that era, not the players themselves as much.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what bias you have against Stockton or the Assists stat in general, Stockton was an amazing player. He is the all time Assists and Steals leader. Look at all the players on the all-time Points scored leaderboard, same seasons played as those on the Assists board. What held Stockton back was not being more selfish and taking more shots. First of all, the way you downplayed steals is one of the dumbest ways to keep a narrative that I've ever seen! Jordans on that list and retired 3 times. Olajuwon's the only center in the top 30 all time in steals, Mookie Blaylock didn't have an extra long career! And since you're trying to keep a narrative, a particularly millennial narrative, you need to include the entirety of how assists were originally measured, by assist to turnover ratio! It was supposed to measure how well you facilitate the ball to your teammates compared to how many times you turned the ball over! Stockton never won a ring for several reasons, and it usually came down to matchups!

I am from that time period. Take a look at Earl Monroe, his spin move, never or rarely turned the ball over. Jerry West, huge hands, stopped on a dime and shot. He, along with others were great. I think the current NBA have great shooters, but there is largely no defense, constant use of the off hand to creaet space from the defensive player are fouls. The euro-step, Hardin step back, stepping after you turn the ball over, used to be discontinued dribble, walking. It all looks good and sells but it is no longer a game its a show. Biggest gripe is no way do these guys compare to Jabbar or so many others who were great within the strict rules. Thanks.

I rarely reply to this stuff but played in NYC in the 60-70's. You could not turn your hand over, most of the dribbling in the NBA would be called carrying, turning the ball over. The Euro-walk, Hardins step back are walks under the rules I grew up under. Take a look at Jerry west, Calvin Muhy, Bird and others once you stopped the dribble you could not take another step and then shoot. It was called stopping on a dime and shooting. Much of what is in the NBA is catching th ball and takin a set up step, thats walking. The use of the off hand by the offensive playing pushing the person guarding him is an offensive foul. You cannot use your hand to creat space, as Jordan did sometimes. You want ot see a great play, look at what Jabbar did for years, 1986-90 Lakers.

I'd say you are right and wrong, I love the video don't get me wrong, but the problem is not having a high assist pg, it's being dependent on one guy to create for others, for example, a guy like wall is a 10 assist guy, not because it's about" him" creating for others, but because he HAS to create for others at that rate for the wizards. Just like with most other skills, if a team was dependent on one player to do 40% of their scoring, like stockton and the jazz with assists, they wouldn't win, that is depending on one player for 40 points at least, it's not about "assists don't matter as much as we thought" but the other way around, 10 assists are at least like 35% of a teams assists, can't remember many championship teams that won with a guy having to score 35+ points a game either, if we lower it to 8, that is around the same percentage of the teams production in assists to 28 points a game, I have seen a lot of teams win with 25-28 points a game from one player, and 7-8 assists from their best assist guy, just like assists can't all be coming from one guy, neither can points, or probably any other stat, the problem is most people understand with more scorers (wich is a good thing) ppg will be lower, and still credit 25-28 points per game guys as amazing scorers, but once a guy is in the 7 to 8 assist range he is no longer in the top passers discussion, a lot of great passers have lower assists in their most successfull years, not because assists are not a good measure of helping your team, but because our preception of "10 assists" is wrong, having 10 assists of 25 your team has, is like having 40 of your teams 100 points, much less those like wesbrook, 10 assists 5 to guys are like a guy that scores 40 points and shoots 33%, you are not going to win with that. And terms like 20 and 10 guy, makes a lot of people think 1 assist = 2 points in terms of distribuiton, when in reality, it's more like 1 assist = 4 points (again not in value, but dependence, based on a hypothetcial 100p 25a), most people would look at a 20p 5a guy as score first, when in truth that player is all around if you look at the percentage of his teams statistical production he is responsible for 20% of his teams points and assists, going by that, if 28 of 100 points of a team is a healthy ratio for a top scorer followed by a guy scoring 24, and a third one scoring 18, then 7 assists would be what you want your top passer to get, followed by 6, then 4,5 (the math may need adjusting). To summerize, anything over a 1 to 3 assist to point ratio is pass first, if a point guard is 20p and 7a, he is a pass first point guard. a 16p 10 assist player is unhealthhy for the offense, just the same as much as a 40p 4a one, and a good balence for a star player in general would be 24p 6a.

although players back in the 70s-80s weren’t as skilled as they are today the reason they didn’t dribble like the ones today wasn’t because of a lack of innovation but because carry/traveling rules were very strict back then so you always had to keep your palm parallel with the floor when dribbling
these rules made it almost impossible to create space with dribble moves against a defender as you had less control of the ball. nowadays it almost seems like players almost have their palms under the ball when they’re dribbling and thus they have much more control over the ball. this technique can be seen a lot in guards like isaiah thomas from the celtics and kyrie as well.
trying to do a crossover like kyrie in the 70s would’ve been an easy travel call for the refs

you're wrong and here's why, it's not players faults they don't have players on their team that know how to pass and you're forgetting the level of talent, some of these players get high assist because their the only (one of the few) player on their team that can get their shot so they get clogged lanes, double teams, etc

Video shouldve been 3 minutes, you talking about a lot of nothing...basically you saying high assists is overrated and use Stockton as the poster child so you tried to simplify his career, doing that you omitted everything he do well. Stockton one of the most efficient, effective pgs of all time. One of the best defenders at the position. All that and you saying he overrated because he didn't have a left hand and got too much assist. Video lame asf.

One of the reasons Bron loses more finals than he wins. He is so talented that he still wins but his style of play is flawed. Dominating the ball all the time and passing it to guys who will only shoot because they are not allowed to stuff the paint. He needs the space for his scoring. If Bron would move more off the ball and also the ball itself (not only looking for the direct assist or score but also hockey assists, pass and move etc.) his stats would suffer but he would win more and people would perceive his teammates not as bums that can't do nothing. LeBron helps shooters but everyone else he makes worse. It could change this year with AD tho.. let's wait

Only three players ever led the league in assists AND won the NBA title the same year: Bob Cousy, Jerry West and Magic Johnson. The two years the Jazz made the Finals, even if they'd won, Stockton would not have altered this, because he did not lead the league in assists (for the first time in a long time) in either of those two seasons. With that in mind, it's practically a curse to have the league assist leader in on your team. It's almost a telltale sign that you're not going to win.

Damn this is really good. A few comments, Magic was still too future even for this era. Still the most innovative passer I've ever seen on the break. I may give it to Steve Nash in the half court though. Secondly the problem with these great dribblers except Isiah and Curry who are balanced with it, is the same with overly high assist men. It discourages distribution and creates stagnation. See Kyrie who ruined what Boston had, and is currently canceling out what made the Nets, the new Nets. So it doesn't equal more winning, just more show.
