@@dragondragon5437 lol CP3 had to join the rockets just to make it to the WCF. They may have made it to the finals... Oh that's right cp3 was hurt again. Actually where is CP3 right now? Oh hurt again. CP3 is better than John Stockton at collecting a paycheck from sitting on the bench in street clothes.
Just one if the many fuck ups this idiot makes: Stockton js the better player. End if story. If he had jumped around to better teams like CP3, he would have actually won a few rings. Stats are everything in this debate since they play in different era’s. Stockton has two records that will not be broken for at least another 15 years, and thats only if a player comes ariound that mimics his entire play style. Stockton is the better player, period end of story. Anyone that says otherwise is being biased against the unpopular Jazz player.
Stockton's more durable than CP3, partly cause he plays a less explosive style. But I think that Chris Paul has been available for every playoffs, and other than 10', has played at least 60 games every season (58 this season). 7 times he's played at least 70 games, and 3 times at least 80 games. Thus, not as durable as Stockton, but easily more durable than Allen Iverson, and descent durability overall.
Trent Irwin Making the comparison isn't the problem. It's just making it into an argument of who's better that makes it a problem. Stockton was as pure as a point guard gets, but CP3 is the last of the dying breed for pass first playmakers and ran a lot of plays from the mid-range, so I can see where comparisons arise.
@@alejandromarmolejo13 Chris Paul doesnt even come close to John Stockton. Like there is no comparison. John Stockton is clearly the better point guard.
@@dandsch Tough call. If I have a team w/ all the weaponry in place around the point guard already, I'm going w/ Stockton; his efficiency is flawless. If I have a missing part or 2, such as no slasher from the wing for instance, or I'm deficient in some other area, I'm going w/ Paul, cause he can carry a team more.
Basil Carpenter jr He played with Karl Malone for 19 seasons all of his assists would come him getting trapped picking up his dribble and passed it to Malone who would do a quick post move and Stockton undeservingly getting an assist
@@kaito3528 yeah, keep trying to make weak ass fucking excuses you hater. He was the epitome of a point guard , period. Tough as hell for his size, not a bitch baby like most of the players today
Chris Paul isn't worthy of being mentioned when it comes to John Stockton. John Stockton is the best point guard to ever play basketball ever. John Stockton's records will never be broken.
Stockton isn’t better then Magic Johnson Steph Curry Oscar Robertson Jerry West And Isiah Thomas I’ll put him over Chris Paul He’s got an argument over Isiah but I’ll take Isiah. Stockton is still 6 or 7th best PG ever
That's hilarious.... John Stockton any day of the week that ends in the letter y. All-Time career record in assists AND steals! He has also found way more success in the Playoffs, reaching the NBA Finals TWICE! Stockton is way too underrated, if he played somewhere besides Utah, he would be known as the greatest point guard ever!
Zeke said Stockton would've been even better in a more free form offense than the pick and role heavy Utah offense. Granted Isaiah hates Karl Malone and that might be a dig on Karl but Isaiah doesn't give out praise lightly (if at all). One other thing is CP3 is considered a bit of an asshole in the league (just ask Rondo). Plus he's wound so tight he fails in the clutch too often for my taste
1. Stockton played in the handchecking era when it was easier to get steals. 2. CP3 never had Karl Malone for almost 20 years. At best he had Blake Griffin who is nothing compared to the mailman. 3. CP3 has one of the most sauce of all time and Stockton has trash skills. Stockton never finishes with his left hand, even when going left. Find me a clip of him using his left hand and I'll give a $100.
Arson Hakobyan have you seen how many games Stockton missed in his career. The answer is 22. He was 1502/1524. You don’t even want to know how many games CP3 has missed. Also I assume you’re saying he’d beat Stockton 1 v 1 and not 5 v 5, because every hall of famer would pick Stockton over CP3 at PG 9/10 times.
G Money How’d you know they’d pick Stockton? You asked them 1 by 1? CP3 isn’t bad himself, with what he shown in his career he can be put into the debate of the GOAT PGs that ever played. I personally think Stockton is better, but it’d be better to construct your arguments without bringing down the other. You’re disrespecting what Paul has done in the league as if you really know who every HOF would pick. And if ever they did ofc more would pick Stockton since some played with him.
he is also one of the most efficient players in history, due to efficiency ratings on nba alltime stats. just for comparison, bryant is one of the worst efficient, like westbrook
Dominic dominic he relied on the whole team! He was a point gaurd. Weak players he went up against Gary Payton, Vernon maxwell, Kevin Johnson, Kenny Smith,Tim hardaway, terry porter, all in the West! Rock solid my dude. Sure the game has evolved, but for people to say players was weak in the 90’s is bullshit. I believe the this generation says it because they heard somewhere else, but they really don’t know for themselves.
John Stockton really is clearly ahead. If you say otherwise.....then you are either 12, or just have no knowledge of Basketball outside of the current era.
that's another thing that makes stockton better than paul which i didnt think about stockton always played like 80 or 81 or 82 games every year whereas paul never played 82 games pretty much.
Honestly he probably is. Isiah Thomas lucked onto being the centerpiece of his era's warriors. He was the best played on the best team for their chip runs and early in their formation. Paul's the more efficient player, the better defender, the better passer, and noticeably better at taking care off the rock.
They also drafted Kelly Tripuka who helped carry the scoring load. They traded for Vinnie Johnson and Bill Laimbeer by the next year because their old team had a bunch of solidish assets. (Essentially his team getting a Klay and Draymond before trading for an Iggy. Daly was hired after the new unit showed potential (hiring Kerr) and the team took off. They then jettisoned the solid wing they drafted for a multi-time scoring champion (Dantley/Durant). Except in his case his team kept adding more pieces building up a rotation that's comfortably 8-9 deep.
All time steals and assists leader who made 5 conference finals in 7 years, including back-to-back finals vs Jordan's Bulls. But sure. The guy who's never been out of the 2nd round? He's better. LOL
@@bcuno Stockton played in their primes at one point or another - Magic Johnson, Gary Payton, Jason Kidd, Kevin Johnson, Tim Hardaway in the West. Penny Hardaway, Mark Price, Allen Iverson, Isiah Thomas, Dennis Johnson in the East. The player he played the most games against in his career was Hakeem Olajuwon - the All-Time Leader In Blocked Shots. Chris Paul would be crying for his mama every night.
Newmans_Own you gotta remember that everyone today is better. A lot of what Chris Paul does today would’ve been an anomaly back then, as bball said the point guards weren’t as developed in moves and roles as they were today. Chris proves ly would’ve done better since the importance of centers and point guards switched between the 2 eras, as well as the skill levels required
Just to note John stockton wasnt even an allstar when they made it to the final by 34 he was out of his prime. Just think if malone had chris paul from this year
None of the stats you've used here account for pace. John Stockton's teams played at a relatively slow pace compared to Chris Paul's teams. Per 100 possessions, Stockton scored 20+ points and had 17+ assists (peaking at 23 and 19.4, respectively) for 8 straight seasons. Chris Paul has never posted those numbers. Stockton did it for eight. straight. seasons. Despite never getting a finals ring, Stockton saw more postseason success, while CP3 has never been out of the 2nd round of the playoffs.
lol what? you wanna talk about PER 100 POSSESIONS? yeah CP3 ONLY had: 32ppg and 16apg in 2009 30ppg and 16apg in 2008 30ppg and 15apg in 2016 29ppg and 14 apg in 2017 27ppg and 15 apg in 2014 27ppg and 15apg in 2013 etc. So what would people rather have? 32/16 or 23/19?? lmao the answer is clear DONT TALK SHIT IF YOU DONT KNOW SHIT 32/16 IS BETTER THAN 23/19 IF YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT SHIT LIKE "PER 100 POSESSIONS" LOL
@@anakovacevic6755 That's actually much closer than you're suggesting. Assuming every assist leads to a 2pt field goal, the 3apg difference is 6pts. The point differential's 9. So that's only 3pts there. Now 1 of those 3 assists probably results in a 3pt field goal or 3pt play. That cuts it down to 2. Now at this trend, there's probably at least 1 other possession more where Stockton sets somebody up underneath the hoop to get hammered and go to the line for 2, but Stockton gets no credit for either of the 2 made free throws. So I'm going to very roughly say that the difference is 1pt, so basically negligible per 100 possessions. But no stat is perfect, pace is part of the game too, as are other things, so just going off a combo of naked eye test & stats, Stockton's a tiny bit more of a pure point guard, while Paul is the more dynamic dual threat point guard.
@@anakovacevic6755 Wanna talk about 20010-2012 and 2017-2022 lol? John Stockton put up his 20/17 up every single year of his career not just half of them
+BBALLBREAKDOWN Everything you bring up in this video is valid, however, I have to with Stockton as the better pure point guard. However, this arising belief that CP3 is overrated and people beginning to believe that CP is not an all time top 5 point guard is extremely ludicrous. Thank you, for bringing to light the overlooked aspects of CP3's game that the casual fan refuses to recognize. This was my favorite video ever.
Chris Paul is slightly better individually, but if you are building a team of 8 to 12 players, you have to go with Stockton. He’ll make any team that much better. Steph Curry is a tier above both of them though.
grapplerke u could make that argument but i think in today’s game Stockton is gonna let it fly and get to the basket at any time as well as mid range shots it’s system because he fed it to Malone so much and point guards nowadays have more room to operate
John Stockton played against the greats and dominated... no mention to 24pts, 24assists and 5steals vs Lakers in 1988 playoffs at the forum? Chris Paul is said to be better because media needs audience... when he retires people will continue comparing the next big PG against Stockton not CP3...
you could have easily said the first sentence with the starting two words to be "Chris Paul". And I also don't really believe in that people will compare upcoming PGs to Stockton like he's the first ever great PG. CP3 will be just as legendary when he retires and people will look back at this Point God.
Yeah do you realize how many of those assists were simple post entry passes? Stockton only had 3 years where he was winning a substantial amount of games in the playoffs for his team: and that was '96 through '98.
Stockton>CP3. The only reason Stockton doesn't have a ring is because he ran into the GOAT for 2 straight NBA Finals. I love CP3 but he choked in 3 straight years in the playoffs. in 2013 the clippers were up 2-0 against the grizzlies and lost the next 4 games. in 2014 in game 5 against the thunder, the clippers were up 7 with 49 seconds left and CP3 had 2 straight turnovers before fouling Westbrook on a 3 that cost them the game and the series. in 2015 the clippers were up 3-1 against the rockets and blew the series. Now the warriors are too good and his chance to get to the finals are over but he had his chances and he blew them.
The Notorious G.T.M. Is it a team game when players negotiate their contracts??? I didn't think so. CP3 got paid max dollars to make a difference and the clippers still have never been to a conference finals. He deserves to be blamed.
Rob Tes so doesn't John Stockton need to be blamed by losing in the finals? And is everybody perfect? I see what you are saying bc you are right, Chris Paul should take the blame, but not all of it. Against the rockets, doc rivers drained the starters out and the bench could not provide anything. A quote by Isiah Thomas about game 6 of the finals when the jazz faced the bulls for the second straight year, "I believe that if John Stockton does not pass that ball to Karl Malone with 30 seconds left, they win that game." Many players believed that John Stockton passed too much to a fault bc John Stockton had the ability to score, but he would cost his teams by passing it too much. Both players share this characteristic that hinders their team.
+Rob Tes He did make a difference what the hell are you talking about. CP3 is the one who made the Clippers relevant again. And yes CP3 deserves blame but so does everybody else on the TEAM capisce?
Leon Tran No player is perfect but even if Stockton doesn't make that pass and they win Game 6 they would still need to win Game 7. My point about CP3 is that his teams were in position to win a series multiple times and he failed to capitalize. The responsibility and blame should primarily be on him.
or maybe you are uneducated and you dont know that Stockton played with a top 15 player of all time and thats why he won in the playoffs cp3s best teammate is mr. made of glass blake griffin who will be at best not even in top 150 players of all time and who else? david west lol you dont know shit so stfu
@Google Account buddy played with karl malone, advanced stats show who's the superior talent and player. Stockton was never a top 10 player in the league or mvp candidate when he played. Keep mouthing off tho
@Google Account what are you on about, Stockton never finished top 7 in mvp voting. He was also the second option every year of his career. These are facts, using fancy adjectives like "historic" means shit all next to facts. You're such a bozo lmao, keep mouthing off, let's see what adjectives you'll use next.
this shouldn't even be a discussion... if it wasn't for MJ Bulls John Stockton would have at least 2 rings... Guy was on the dream team the greatest team ever assembled.. and in my opinion Cp3 wouldn't have made the team
There's absolutely no way anyone can be compared to Stockton. he is by far the best point guard of all time. his assists total will never be broken. his steals, maybe. but no one will come close to assists. Stockton played 19 years and only missed a handful of games. his toughness cannot be challenged and knowing how long he played, in a league that had more physical contact allowed back then, being the size he was and going up against arguably the best era of basketball players the NBA has ever seen, he is by far the greatest point guard to ever play the game.
that's what also sets Stockton apart: his toughness. He can screen mammoth players and just shut them down. And if he falls, he never complains. He bounces right back up and continues with the game. I even think he's the GOAT.
In the end, I think Stockton's longevity wins out. If you have to pick player for a single game, you could take Paul, but for a career, it's Stockton by a long shot.
Exactly. Some players have that something about them that you can trust when the time calls for it..... that's John Stockton. A mentally fragile player like Chris Paul will always choke come crunch time. You just know these sort of things if you are in-tuned with sporting competitions.
One word: Stockton. More steals and more assists all-time than any player in NBA History. One of the 50 all-time greatest players in the history of the game. 19 years with Jazz.
Is this even a question??? It's blasphemous to even compare Chris Paul to John Stockton. Paul is not even close. Stockton is the greatest point guard ever!
Kyrie stats barely even better than an system like nash🤦 all he does is score but good enough for an superstar like AI not only that he been missing a hell lot of playoffs games lately iam take an hard pass. Should of said damian liilard
Hi, I'm Magic Johnson, the actual best point guard of all time. If you'd like to call me up to apologize, I'm at Laker headquarters, trying to fix Jimmy Buss's mess. Leave a message with Jeannie.
"Yes Hello, Magic? In regard to your request we have declined your offer but what we can do is offer you a John Stockton play by play video tape on how your improve your game. Have a nice day"
the tittle says "BETTER POINT GUARD" a point guard is an a court leader, basically a coach on the floor. They're supposed to run the offensive not score like Curry or Westbrook. The question is who's a better Point Guard, that answer is Stockton but better player is Paul. I rather take Stockton and he is the better POINT GUARD
Stockton no question. CP3 is very good but Stockton was a legend through the end of his career. Hope CP3 gets healthy and finishes his career on the upswing though!
I watched Stockton growing up. The game was much more physically demanding back then. He was a pit bull out there. Fundamentals and defense that few could match. CP3 is a very good player. But I’m sorry he doesn’t stack up to Stockton. If Stockton wanted to he could have scored much more than he did. I got to give it to Stockton.
"...the only reason they couldn't win the whole thing was two words... Michael Jeffrey Jordan. " Pauses video. Counts with fingers. Resumed video and continued eating popcorn.
Big Slatts John Stockton would have been equally as great without Karl Malone but you can’t say the same about Karl Malone without those assists from Stockton.
I’m the biggest John Stockton fan ever, so of course I’ll say Stockton. That said, I think this would be a legit debate if CP3 had been more durable. I’m glad y’all are showing Stockton the love!
If you play 9 of 13 career playoff series in the first round (don't have to maintain stats for longer playoff runs) and never faced a Finals/Title caliber team (easier competition), you better have good playoff statistics at the bare minimum. Any top 15 PG of all-time will have similar or better playoff statistics in Chris Paul's shoes *Rod Strickland 1994 - 1997 Playoffs* 21.7 ppg - 5.1 rpg - 9.5 apg 2.9 TOpg - 45% FG *Chris Paul 2008 - 2017 Playoffs* 21.4 ppg - 4.7 rpg - 9.4 apg 2.7 TOpg - 48% FG 1994 - 1997 Strickland faced 2 championship teams to CP3's 0 Finals/Title teams. Averaged more PPG, RPG, APG on less efficiency and slightly more TOpg. Most playoff games (76) without reaching a Conference Finals - despite the luxury of never having to face a Finals/Title team Not only did KJ set a significantly higher number of playoff records than CP3, he did it against significantly better competition. KJ lost to 6 teams that either made the Finals or won it all. In each of KJ's playoff runs where he averaged those numbers under his list of records, he lost to either a Finals or Title team. CP3 faced 0 teams that even made the Finals after beating him, let alone win it all KJ also played with lesser supporting casts than CP3 in his pre-Barkley years, and even when he had Barkley he played significantly better playoff competition regardless in 3 championship teams to CP3 facing 0 teams that even made the Finals.
Nobody Touches Jordan idk if you wrote this yourself or if you copied and paste but the whole cp3 hasn't played any championship teams or has all his stats against non competitive teams is BS. Just off the top of my head ( I'm sure there's PLENTY more that I'm forgetting) I know he played the reigning NBA champion Spurs team and beat them (and hit the game winner/series winner) in 2014 not only did he beat them he had amazing numbers in that run, also his series against a perennial championship CALIBER okc team he did the same, and he just played a Utah jazz team that was the number 2 rated defensive team in the entire league this year and still got his pretty easily he was almost at 50/40/90 with 25 ppg and 10 ast. Point being cp3 gets his numbers pretty easily which is a testament to him being a good player simple.
Playing a defending champion is not the same as facing an actual championship team. I am referring to facing a Finals/Title team in the same year that a player lost to them. The 2015 Spurs were the 6-seed and lost in the 1st round, then the Clippers lost to a Rockets team without Beverly that lost before making the Finals. Only two seeds in history outside of the top 3 seeds have won a title, so the 2015 Spurs were not legitimate contenders regardless of their previous two seasons. as evidenced by losing to a Clippers team that lost to a non-Finals team The 2014 Thunder also did not make the Finals that year they beat CP3, they lost before making the Finals. 2012 was the only year they made the Finals. So once again he lost to a non-Finals team Utah was without Gobert for the first 3 games and Hayward was out for the last 3 quarters of Game 4 due to illness, so the Jazz were not at full strength for more than half the series. So Chris Paul only faced the Jazz's top ranked defense for less than half the series at full strength. And did nothing in the 2nd half of Game 7 when the stakes were highest. John Wall is averaging 29-11 in these 2017 Playoffs on 50/36/83 shooting. Westbrook was previously the only player to average 26-11 in a playoffs past the 1st round, so Wall has a chance of setting a new record if he keeps up this play. His 2017 run thus far is way more impressive than anything CP3 has done in the playoffs.
Nobody Touches MJ I knew what you referring too I know the teams I mentioned didn't win chip I never said they did my point was that he did play championship CALIBER teams plenty of times throughout his career so my point still stands to have the notion that he never played anyone is stupid asf to me. Besides the whole basis of your argument seems stupid you know how many NBA players could have their stats "discredited" because they didn't play the champions that year??? Yea your right John wall has put up nice stats this post season slightly better than cp3s and for a larger amount of games but that has nothing to do with everything else I said above and doesn't change the similarly amazing stats cp has and has had. And like I said those were only a couple I could think off of the top of my head I'm sure there are many more series we could discuss if I actually went and looked up the records and searched for the numbers
He's faced good teams, but never faced a true Finals/Title team so the point still stands. A Finals-caliber team is not the same as actually making the Finals or winning it all, with rare exceptions for weak conferences like the 2002 / 2003 Nets or 2007 Cavs. "you know how many NBA players could have their stats "discredited" because they didn't play the champions that year??? " But my point is not that CP3 did not face Finals/Title teams for one year, it's that he has never faced a Finals/Title team in his ENTIRE playoff career. The only other notable player I can think of who faced 0 Finals/Title teams in his playoff career as a starter is Tracy McGrady. All the other notable players that made 0 Finals have lost to Finals/Title teams at least once. Such as - Nash - Gervin - English - Gilmore - Moncrief - David Thompson - Tim Hardaway - Webber - Bernard King - 0 ECF/WCF - Dominque - 0 ECF/WCF so CP3 and Tmac's cases are especially bad, because all the other non-Finals players played better competition (Finals/Title teams) and have more valid excuses. so once again, he deserves extra criticism for making 0 WCF (not even the Finals) while facing 0 Finals/Title teams in his entire career. CP3's stats are not that amazing, because he's played 9 of 13 series in the 1st round and faced 0 Finals/Title teams. Rod Strickland from 1994-1997 put up better stats, with less help, and against better competition in 2 Title teams as posted in the first comment
I’ll go with Stockton because of how tough he was and how fundamentally he played . People saying cp3 was. Better in defense that’s not really true.. Stockton was playing in a defensive era where mostly everyone was good at defense that’s why he didn’t make a lot of defense all team . Cp3 is great though he’s not that far from Stockton . But I gotta go with the OG
Nice video, but I would edit out the comment about it being easier to get to the hoop after beating your opponent in Stockton's era (because of the illegal defense rule). Contemporary game is much more wide open to the basket because of the spacing, the (much more effective deterrent) fear of getting called for flagrants, the disappearance of the carry and travelling calls, and the rules that now all but rule out any physical contact with the ball handler. Watch a few of those games and notice how crowded the paint was and how the PG would get clawed and hammered on the way to the basket.
Stockton didnt have a selfish bone in his body on the court, and certainly wasn't driven by ego. Chris Pauls biggest issue is his ego. Stockton over Paul any day of the year
Stockton wasn't a brand like MJ, or Kobe, or Lebron etc... CP3 has more of a star rating because of his flashy style of game etc... But people tend to overlook one thing about John Stockton, when his all time assists (near 16k), and his all time points (near 20k) are combined, you get the most efficient player in NBA history, responsible for ~60k points in total (combining assists and points). Stockton is by far, the most underrated player ever.
I’m a firm believer in the evolution of the game making players today far better than players of the previous generation and so on. I feel from a skill standpoint CP3 is better but career wise Stockton has him beat. Of course records will stand but the position CP3 faced is far more advanced in skill than the position Stockton faced. Players today are unstoppable and can spread the floor anywhere. Stockton didn’t have the same problem, bigs didn’t shoot and zone offense was somewhat relevant still.
I was a HUGE Chris Paul fan from 2007-2013 during his prime years...I personally thought watching Stockton during his prime years was not very entertaining for the fact that he really concentrated his game only on offense...but at their primes Stockton was better...Chris Paul is my favorite point guard in the modern era and I would have him running point in my fantasy starting 5
GREAT VIDEO!! I love these types of videos. You should create more of these past vs present sort of videos. With your knowledge, this material is a treat!
I'm glad you finally did a video on Stockton, probably don't remember but I suggested a video idea of the pick&roll in today's game vs (possibly best) Malone and Stocktons game. Even though I'm still highly interested in the change from then to now, considering back then bigs did not shoot from distance, this a great video. Thanks coach.
If CP3 can keep up his averages after 19 years, then him. If you took Stockton's first 12 years stats and compared them to Paul's current 12 years, Stockton BLOWS him away in every category but scoring.
excuse me? Ana Kovacevic one thing we gotta put into consideration tho when it comes to these comparisons: average usage rate for both players over the first 12 seasons applicable

I just realized Chris Paul and Blake Griffin are the weak versions of Stockton and Malone. lol

The best ability is availability.. so i am going with John Stockton
Samuel Robles lol
This might be the best point in comment section. How could you not pick a player that played so hard, yet could not be injured.
God WestBrick CP3 > Lurry
Correct. Even though CP3 is great, he got injured many times and in the playoff too. So, if you're not on the court, you can't help the team.
I think it’s insulting to make the comparison. John Stockton easily. No contest or debate.
Trent Irwin it’s not embarrassing stop it kid.
Trent Irwin it’s not insulting. It’s more insulting of your part to devaluate a legend like Chris Paul like that

Stockton has a reserved personality, just about that, the people doesn't consider him as one of the all time greats.
Stockton have a losing record in the Playoffs you Know that

What kind of total moron could put Paul over Stockton?
Because Chris Paul is very fucking good at basketball

29ppg and 14 apg in 2017
27ppg and 15 apg in 2014
27ppg and 15apg in 2013

DONT TALK SHIT IF YOU DONT KNOW SHIT
32/16 IS BETTER THAN 23/19 IF YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT SHIT LIKE "PER 100 POSESSIONS" LOL

Forgiven Sinner 20/20/0
you could have easily said the first sentence with the starting two words to be "Chris Paul".
Daniel Alves You're an idiot
It's John Stockton. He could do perfect cutting passes.
Chris Paul didn't lose in those series', the Clippers did. Basketball is team game if you didn't know
The Notorious G.T.M.

Always Stockton. Both great players. But i would choose John Stockton every time.

If you play 9 of 13 career playoff series in the first round (don't have to maintain stats for longer playoff runs) and never faced a Finals/Title caliber team (easier competition), you better have good playoff statistics at the bare minimum. Any top 15 PG of all-time will have similar or better playoff statistics in Chris Paul's shoes

21.7 ppg - 5.1 rpg - 9.5 apg
2.9 TOpg - 45% FG
*Chris Paul 2008 - 2017 Playoffs*
21.4 ppg - 4.7 rpg - 9.4 apg
2.7 TOpg - 48% FG
1994 - 1997 Strickland faced 2 championship teams to CP3's 0 Finals/Title teams. Averaged more PPG, RPG, APG on less efficiency and slightly more TOpg. Obviously CP3 maintained his stats for a longer time so he's better, but the point is the same that it's much easier to put up big playoff stats in CP3's ideal circumstances.

49% FG - 83% FT
3.80 AST:TO ratio
Lost to 2 Title teams (88 Lakers, 95 Rockets)
Had Stockton had the statistical luxury that CP3 does, of playing only in 1-2 round playoffs in his prime, he'd have the highest playoff APG by a comfortable margin. 13.4 APG to Magic's 12.3 APG. Also would have the highest playoff SPG average, 2.45 to Baron Davis' 2.28.
*Chris Paul playoff career 2008 - 2017* (All Runs lasted only 1-2 rounds)
21.4 PPG - 4.7 RPG - 9.4 APG
2.21 SPG - 0.09 BPG - 2.7 TOpg
48% FG - 85% FT
3.45 AST:TO ratio
Lost to 0 Finals/Title teams
Stockton's assist advantage (+4.0) is much greater than any of CP3's advantages combined (+3.2 PPG, +1.0 RPG, -0.8 TOpg) since it accounts for at least an 8 PPG advantage
CP3 isn't even half as good as Kevin Johnson, so there's no chance of comparing him to John Stockton.
*Kevin Johnson's Playoff records*
1. NBA records for most playoff runs (ppg-apg) of
- 20-8 past the 1st Round (5)
- 21-8 past the 1st Round (5)

3. 2nd all-time, behind Magic Johnson, in playoff runs (ppg-apg) of
- 20-10 past the 1st Round (3)

- 21-9 past the 2nd round (2)
- 20-10 past the 2nd round (2) - Tied with Nash
- 21-10 past the 2nd round (2)
*Chris Paul's Playoff records*
1. Highest AST:TO ratio in a playoff run past the 1st round (min. 11 APG)
Other players have higher AST:TO ratios with less APG however
- Fat Lever - highest AST:TO ratio past 1st Rd (min. 3.5 APG)
- Johnny Moore - highest AST:TO ratio past 1st Rd (min. 8, 9, or 10 APG)
2. Tied-Most all-star teams (9) without passing the 2nd round with Dominique Wilkins
- however, Dominique lost to 2 championship teams (86 Celtics, 93 Bulls)
- CP3 has never faced a team that even made the Finals after beating him
3. Most playoff games (76) without reaching a Conference Finals
- despite the luxury of never having to face a Finals/Title team
Not only did KJ set a significantly higher number of playoff records than CP3, he did it against significantly better competition. KJ lost to 6 teams that either made the Finals or won it all. In each of KJ's playoff runs where he averaged those numbers under his list of records, he lost to either a Finals or Title team. CP3 faced 0 teams that even made the Finals after beating him, let alone win it all
KJ also played with lesser supporting casts than CP3 in his pre-Barkley years, and even when he had Barkley he played significantly better playoff competition regardless in 3 championship teams to CP3 facing 0 teams that even made the Finals.
Only two seeds in history outside of the top 3 seeds have won a title, so the 2015 Spurs were not legitimate contenders regardless of their previous two seasons. as evidenced by losing to a Clippers team that lost to a non-Finals team
The 2014 Thunder also did not make the Finals that year they beat CP3, they lost before making the Finals. 2012 was the only year they made the Finals. So once again he lost to a non-Finals team
Utah was without Gobert for the first 3 games and Hayward was out for the last 3 quarters of Game 4 due to illness, so the Jazz were not at full strength for more than half the series.
But my point is not that CP3 did not face Finals/Title teams for one year, it's that he has never faced a Finals/Title team in his ENTIRE playoff career.
The only other notable player I can think of who faced 0 Finals/Title teams in his playoff career as a starter is Tracy McGrady. All the other notable players that made 0 Finals have lost to Finals/Title teams at least once.
Such as
- Nash
- Gervin
- English
- Gilmore
- Moncrief
- David Thompson
- Tim Hardaway
- Webber
- Bernard King - 0 ECF/WCF
- Dominque - 0 ECF/WCF
so CP3 and Tmac's cases are especially bad, because all the other non-Finals players played better competition (Finals/Title teams) and have more valid excuses. so once again, he deserves extra criticism for making 0 WCF (not even the Finals) while facing 0 Finals/Title teams in his entire career.
CP3's stats are not that amazing, because he's played 9 of 13 series in the 1st round and faced 0 Finals/Title teams. Rod Strickland from 1994-1997 put up better stats, with less help, and against better competition in 2 Title teams as posted in the first comment
Excellent timing. GG Utah!
Chris Paul can't even lead a team to a conference finals despite having talent around him.
This aged well because CP3 just carried his team to the Finals yesterday
The fact you are comparing the all time assist leader to Chris Paul is blasphemous
Watch a few of those games and notice how crowded the paint was and how the PG would get clawed and hammered on the way to the basket.
but was the western conference back then not a blood bath as well?
Actually, it was.
Definitely Stockton. Stockton stood up for Malone during clutch moments when the Mailman was cold.
Stockton didnt have a selfish bone in his body on the court, and certainly wasn't driven by ego. Chris Pauls biggest issue is his ego.
Stockton over Paul any day of the year
The title should be "why Stockton is clearly better than Chris Paul"...
Body of work is all I can say. Stockton is first all time in assists and steals, and no one in the league is going to catch him anytime soon.
Greatest pure point guard of all-time.
This question is like comparing Charles Barkley with Horace Grant
Stockton by a lot due to being able to pass efficiently with left and right handedness.
Chris paul winning the chip would put him over john stockton not only that chris paul at 36/37 is way better than john stockton in his late career.
Bruh
"2 words: Michael Jeffery Jordan"
No contest, John Stockton is the greatest point guard of all time.
This is blasphemous I guess isiah Thomas didn’t play or magic Johnson
@@slayy51621 they b on that man nuts he not even close to top 3
@@russell9411 magic curry john
john stockton is the perfect point guard he never switch team !
Paul was traded tho
What does that have to do with anything?
But he never carried a team to the Finals as the best player on his team like CP3 just did yesterday
Hand check rules have to be mentioned here. Made it way harder for a guard to penetrate
That and durability mean I have to give it to Stockton.
Im going with John Stockton. Healthier, longevity, and can take it away on a consistent basis
How is this even a debate? CP3 Is not even a top 3 PG OF ALL TIME 🤔
Stockton too tho
As much as I like Westbrook and acknowledge his growth he could learn a lot from Stockton. John had the goat turnover ratio.
Stockton easy. 2/3 point guard all time, but CP3 isn't top 5.
Prime Deron Williams was better than prime CP3. This one isn't a debate
stockton is the best pg ever,
Chris paul is lucky to be in the top 10
john stockton is a legend hall of famer . the greatest point guard of all time
high iq ball handling skills than curry and chris paul combined
Who’s better?
Two words....John Houston Stockton.
CP3 is a better overall player but in terms of legacy I would go with Stockton for now.
Even though I love cp3 s game, stockton is just the goat at the point guard position...
If CP3 can keep up his averages after 19 years, then him. If you took Stockton's first 12 years stats and compared them to Paul's current 12 years, Stockton BLOWS him away in every category but scoring.
excuse me?
Chris Paul first 12 seasons
18.7ppg, 9.9apg, 4.4rpg, 2.3spg, 47,7%fg, 37%3pt, 86.6%ft, 2.4TOVpg, 6.6FGM/13.9FGA
John Stockton first 12 seasons
13.6ppg, 11.5apg, 2.7rpg, 2.3spg, 51.7%fg, 37.8%3PT, 82.1%FT, 3.0tovPG, 4.8FGM/9.4FGA
In conclusion
CP3 - PTS, REBS, FT%, LESS TURNOVERS, MORE FGM
STOCKTON- AST, FG%, 3PT% (barely even tho he took a lot lesss threes)
So who is blowing out CP3s stats? CP3 is one of the best point guards of all time, and Stockton is also that.
Dont talk shit if you cant back it up with stats like i did, shut the fuck up and go to sleep kaay?
Ana Kovacevic one thing we gotta put into consideration tho when it comes to these comparisons: average usage rate for both players over the first 12 seasons applicable
bitch you shut the fuck up, rude ass
Ana Kovacevic dumbass ! Stockton wasn’t a starter his first few years, that’s why his numbers aren’t as good
John is the better guard but they are so similar in play styles 2-way playmakers
1:00 If the Basketball Gods ever decided to create a point guard from scratch, they would make him in the image, of either John Stockton, or Chris Paul.."
And then they'd make him 6'9 and call him Magic Johnson.
Stockton is the better point guard, no doubt.
"Two Words. Michael Jeffery Jordan." uhhh... LOL
pick stockton = reach finals
If John Stockton had atleast ONE ring, you wouldn't even think about comparing them both in the first place.
