    • Michael Jordan's Myth:... -~-
Ok, soooooo the Real name of this video should be : The SICK & SiNISTER SYSTEM of the Gregg Popovich Spurs (aka Kawhi's Great Escape) but folks say my titles are too long and don't make a ton of sense.. either way, This is our exploration into Gregg Popovich, head coach of the San antonio Spurs. The least i can say is that it's a complicated story of a man who thinks really highly of himself coupled with players who don't think nearly enough of themselves. From Manu to Tony to Tim even David, they all just go along with the..."system"
But Kawhi Leonard may have been Greggs first real test of his..."system" IDK i'm rambling here - just watch the damn video

Hopefully skip bayless will see this. I think when Pop ordered the Code Red on Kawhi mid-season, Kawhi was totally shocked and betrayed. The NBA Storyteller - THE END Around 10:08 into the video, are you sure you know anything about basketball? Pop took Tim out because the Heat was obviously going for a 3. And yes, he put in Diaw. But that's only because Diaw was doing a good job guarding Lebron that game. He missed the shot right? I'm not saying Diaw was the direct reason Lebron missed the shot, but it sure made a difference. Look, your editing is nice. The way you speak sounds professional. But that doesn't always mean you're right. You're like that guy, BSOLZ. Just cause your vids come out good aesthetically, that doesn't mean the content/substance is good. And that's just one part of this so-called "documentary" of yours. A lot of these comments praise you and agree with you, and you notice them. Masterful breakdown and presentation bro. Popovich's military background connects him to his expertise in MKultra programming handler. Not to mention the fact that he majored in psychology. Pop is not the only one that utilizes these techniques. He's just one of the more conservative ones that wanna portray this liberal political appeal so the majority of black players can become indoctrinated into his mind control system. He's a great coach, but he's Machiavellian as hell.

Indeed. Phil is one of the most manipulative people I've ever seen and in my view his style is closer to cult leader than Pop. In his books, he overtly talked about making a specific player the whipping boy in order to make the rest of the team submissive to his vision and actually incorporated spirituality/religion into his coaching. And, like Pop, his tactics produced tangible results. Not so much as an executive though, lol. Show me a great coach in any sport and I'll show you a control freak that heavily utilizes the loyalty garnering tactics described here. Pop, I would describe as more of a military style leader. Did he stunt Manu's individual production? Yes. Did he produce a player that could play as a cog and branch out solo when needed? 100% For those it works for it really works for and maybe ultimately Kawhi did want more of a spotlight on him. So now he goes elsewhere to get it.
Where the video gets ridiculous - Neither person is actually abusive in the relationship, as the cult leader or kidnapper is and that's why so many remain loyal after the partnership ends. The loyalty expectation extended to the workplace. As others have mentioned, Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili have all had significant endorsement deals.

As laker fan, I have to disagree. Phil played little games with his guys and the media, but he wasn't running a fuckin cult like pop here. He let his superstars be superstars on the bulls and the lakers. He treated them like professionals and men and individuals. And he would never have ordered his players to call Kawhi out like that in the media and accuse him of faking an injury

Great story telling. Though despite all the exaggerations, Pop is a military man whose career reflects that upbringing. Heck his formative years as a NBA head coach only reinforced those ideals, as he had Robinson (a military kid) & Duncan a quiet & coachable kid (who was open to & almost leaving, but Doc Rivers got in the way of him & Orlando I believe).
But let's look at the military upbringing here which has deep roots, as Gregg, not pop, as player not coach. Gregg played bball is whole life and was good his whole life. Was on a national all star team at 11, finishing 3rd in the world, played high school ball, then college ball at the air force academy rounding out a collegiate career. Gregg was team captain & leading scorer for the air force team btw. He then did his 5 years of required service with the air force the basketball team where he was captain & they won the AAU championship. Gregg even got invited to the 1972 bball Olympic trials. Gregg was good at basketball.
He spent some of those 5 years coaching. Gregg sacrificed his playing career to assistant coach at the air force. But Gregg was playing basketball his whole life, as someone who WORKED his ass off into being a star, playing basketball WITHIN(!) A REGIMENTED LIFESTYLE, playing basketball without the glitz & glamour of today, and even avoiding the bit of it there was in 1970s. Being trained as a coach under Egan a military man, Larry brown (not especially progressive by today's standards), & Don Nelson who was known for treating players like chips on a poker table. This is when we see Pop, was used to a certain control. Control to win by any means necessary. Hell, Gregg had been preparing for this, he just didn't know it. Gregg played his adult career in the Soviet union & eastern Europe, got his degree in Soviet studies & had intelligence training AT THE HEIGHT OF THE COLD FRIGGIN' WAR.
But pop? Pop is a general who has been trying to build a trench family, brothers in arms, his whole career with the goal of winning the war(a championship). Pop knows first hand injuries can ruin players (first 2 seasons as a head coach), so he was progressive about resting them. Pop knows how important it is for his business partners to be more than just business, but family. He & the entire staff was fired by the spurs, forcing him to the warriors. So it being just business wouldn't work out, he tries hard to act like a father figure to shake the very notion of being all about business (so he can find players to commit too). Gregg/Pop, lastly, has been successful. Pop is like Thanos, or Lebron: they were forced early on into choosing how to be successful, and ever since it worked early on, he has been doubling down (or in Thanos' case, halving down) ever since.
Idk, I get Pop. It isn't insidious. However Pop does over step those boundaries by affecting ads, and parts of life way outside the bball realm. You're right sorta kinda I guess. Idk. I'm rambling. Great vid.

Well said! And here is some more. NBA Storyteller talks like trying to get players to check their egos and submit to what is best for the team is a bad thing, but it is the definition of what a good coach is.
I'm absolutely sure there is a lot of truth to what he says in terms of players who will or will not submit to what is best for the team as Popovich - the head coach who is responsible for the team's success - determines it should be. And, as quiet as Kawhi is, I can find no other explanation for him demanding to be traded aside from his personal desire to get better stats and improve his brand. OK, so go already, and godspeed. I like Kawhi and wish only the best for him and sorry he did not fit with the Spurs culture and/or system.
Where this whole thing gets way too sketchy and out-of-bounds is where he calls the Spurs a cult. Here are some definitions for a cult:
      1) - a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object.
Well, if that object is the Spurs team, then OK. That's what team sports is about. If it is a person - in this case Gregg Popovich - then I disagree with that suggestion as well as his implication about Popovich being so egotistical that he thinks it is all about him. Does he have an ego? Sure. But not to the degree that it is all about him. It is all about building a winning team for him and he uses his strong personality to reach that goal. Sometimes I don't like what I see - the way he treats press sometimes, for example - but that does not mean that he is a cult leader or that it is all about him. It means he sometimes has a hard time controlling his emotions. I can relate.
      2) - a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister.
Nothing sinister or strange going on here. Just a team trying to win.
      3) - a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular person or thing.
Nope. Just demanding that people check their ego at the door and submit to what is overall best for the team, even when they could get better personal stats if they could just do whatever they want on the floor.
Look, someone has to lead and mold a group of athletes into a team. It SHOULD be the coach, that is their job description. Nowadays we see players having more power than the coach on many teams, so when a coach actually has the power, as they should, we get people calling it cultish behavior. It's not. It's coaching.

Pop likes players that have gotten over themselves. That are willing to buy into the concept of TEAM and that's in ego driven league. You say that Pop took Tim Duncan out of the game in the finals because he was trying to assert his "dominance" ? Pop took Tim out because they wanted to be able to switch all screens. That's what basketball coaching is. Thanks for pissing on one of the few things that is right about the NBA and that's team play.

LOL you spurs fans are going crazy about this video. I thought it was very enlightening, and explains the downside of running an organization with a coach-dictator. It's not for everyone. And what pop did to Kawhi this past year was fucked up. Took it too far. Some superstars prefer the more laid back Phil Jackson style. He managed crazy personalities like MJ, Pippen, Rodman, kobe, and Shaquille, Ron artest. Different style.
These players are grown men running their own business with themselves as the product. They have to maximize their careers. These aren't college kids from the Styx. OK hold. You had me until the "reason" for making Manu a 6th man. Yes, Pop has a stranglehold on the basketball culture in San Antonio. I grew up there. I was 6 years old when Pop took over. I KNOW SPURS BASKETBALL... better than my own mind. Rewind back to 2005 when Pop officially moved Manu to the bench. The Spurs were playing the Denver Nuggets in the 1st round. These were the Nuggets starring in-their-primes 'Melo and Kenyon Martin. Marcus Camby was an immovable obelisk on defense, Andre Miller was handling the reins at point beautifully (he had 31 points in the first game of the series).
Game 1, the Spurs were beaten 93-87 thanks to some spotty shooting by the big 3 and a ghosting from the bench. Manu was the top scorer for the Spurs in the game because of the difficulties answering the Nuggets' defense - DerMarr Johnson had the Ginobili assignment, so no problem, EXCEPT that Brent Barry gave the Spurs 19 minutes of play with no points on 2 shots taken. I remember specifically thinking in my 14-year-old brain that Brent Barry could not shoot when he was cold off the bench, and it's totally inexcusable to have a Barry on the court who only takes 2 shots. Switching Manu to the bench was the obvious answer.
Game 2: The Spurs make the switch. Barry starts and goes 4/4 from 3 for 16 points, Manu comes off the bench and does his Manu thing with 17 points in 18 freaking minutes. I truly believe that without switching Manu out for Barry, the Spurs don't have a 2005 Championship.
The fact of the matter here is that Manu needed to come off the bench in his prime because it was a smart basketball decision. Here you have a guy who can score the basketball from anywhere, at anytime, even off the bench. Now he's comfortable doing just that, and suddenly there is an additional bargaining tool to bring in any, as you say, impressionable young or international player to take over the starting role.
Of course the Spurs are going to be viewed as a sort of cult. They have ridiculous sustained success, they constantly credit "the system," and Gregg Popovich is a surly old guy with an ever-present chip on his shoulder. The decisions are made for the benefit of the organization, and it works!

Let's begin with me being sorry for my english, I', way more comfortable in german and french.
Ok...so...I feel the need to balance the scale, bring the opposing perspective to the discussion. First, I love how an idea, that came to you while watching a movie, was fleshed out to the size of a documentary. In my opinion though, the narrartive is a bit too one-sided. I'm guessing that was intentional but as a journalist, I just feel that pressing and indoctrinated need to present both sides.
The cultish side to the San Antonio Spurs is definitely there and cannot be ignored, once you spot the clues and dive into it. I've had that revelation myself, a few years ago, when I became a bit infatuated with Coach Pop and wanted to understand how he works. I attended one of his coaching clinics, read and watched everything in existence. Once you that, you can't deny that his methods of teaching follow the path you skillfully described. We can agree on that.
Were we disagree, is the stated fact that it has a negative impact on the persons involved. As a former professional player, I learned that Basketball is a team sport, where there is no place for egotistical teammates. Sooner or later, they will destroy everything that you've build as a collective and rob the lesser skilled players of their achievements. What those egomaniacs don't understand, is that not ONE championship has been won by ONE player. I don't care if you are Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant or LeBron James, there is a team behind every trophy and while the star is responsible for a big chunk of the wins, his career will depend on the environement, meaning his teammates, his coaches, his front office, but first of all, the stars ability to respect his peers and they bring to the table. Just like in real life, mutual respect comes first. If you put yourself before others all the time, don't respect them and think you are superior, your environment will evolve in a negative way, which in the long run, will have a negative impact on your career. Just take Carmelo Anthony as an example. He always had to be the uncontested superstar, didn't really give a shit about his peers and look where it got him?
What the Spurs, especially Pop, are trying to do is implement and uphold a system, that prevents such behavior. While the stars have to accept some drawbacks when it comes to their branding, ego and financial success, they get to play in a stable and structured environement, where the 15th player on the roster has worth, a sense of achievement and is respected by the guys he plays with and for. Hell, a whole bunch of players wouldn't even be millionaires, if it weren't for the Spurs. While I get the negativity attached to that whole system, it's based on the premise that the "amercican way of life" is the only viable one. Money, power and stardom above all else. The individual counts more than the collective. In my experience, you can't achieve greatness alone and you have to respect the people that walk the way with you, especially if you are supposed to lead them to success. Sometimes you'll have to yell and be mean, but it's for the collective. A team needs a clear leader, if you want to achieve anything at all. The lack of just that, is why we mock the Kings, the Suns and every other team that doesn't have a clearly defined sytem and someone to rally around. You'll have to accept that your ego will take a hit but you'll also be part of something bigger than yourself. It's a team sport. I have the feeling that, somehow, this aspect of the game got lost along the way, in all the comercials, shoe deals and individual glory. Everybody wants to be like Mike now. But at the end of the day, the best teams in history were based on mutual respect, playing the right way, the understanding that you are part of a collective where the sum is greater than its parts. Think Bill Russell's Celtics, the 70s Knicks, the 80s Celtics, even the Warriors of today.
There is a reason why Wilt Chamberlain never lived up to his potential. He was just to damn selfish. The Spurs have found a way to take the selfishness out of the game and focus on the common goal of playing basketball the right way: together.
I wish I could articulate this better but, as I said, my english is not good enough. To be clear, I love this video and I have the same reservations when it comes to Popovich. I'm just not sure he's the evil cult leader you make him out to be, even though I'm pretty sure your one-sidedness on this specific topic was intentional, which makes it even better. You couldn't have gone that far, if you hadn't fully commited to it. Nonetheless, I felt compelled to give my take on the topic. Keep doing what you're doing and stay frosty/beautiful :)

where is the cultish side? Being a good person, trusting your teammates, being apart of a collective goal greater then yourself? Its integrity, pride in your work, and selflessness vs Ego, Selfishness, and pride in stuff you have. that is what this is. Businesses that do right by the community they are in aren't going to make the most money aren't gonna be the glamour media darlings its not just in sports Chikenfila perfect example whether or not you agree with political or religion ideology of their owner when has Chickenfila not done right by the community or its employees? and when have they sacrificed quality of service or food for a better bottom line? Search it Its hard to find. Same idea search for situations that the Spurs have rushed injured players to play? They missed Danny Green's injury cause he was out wanting to play improving on his already diagnosed injury why would you think something is more wrong? And find a player Spurs have fucked over their employees sacrificed quality of their product for a better bottom line ? Pretty hard to find

This is very well articulated. There is way more give and take to the situation than is presented in this video. It either cynically caters to the idea that nuance gets you nowhere on UA-cam or shows an extreme narrow mindedness and animus to Gregg Popovich and the Spurs, along with the idea that star players should be worshipped, catered and kowtowed to at the expense of team. Is the maker of this video a Lakers or Suns fan, perhaps?

This video assumes that the players are all completely submissive to Pop. Even Duncan had his disagreements with Pop...
Kawhi left because he wanted starpower... simple as that.
At least, what I believe is Kawhi's family influenced his decisions. They must've guilt tripped him into asking for a trade to LA and try and brand his name as a superstar like Kobe Bryant or something.

Well I appreciate the effort it took to make this. way too much reading between the lines. you're totally wrong about Jonathan Simmons Jonathan Simmons was not a 19 year old. he was an older player that's been a long time in the D-League had the ability to make NBA a Payday. the Spurs were not going to give him one, he couldn't draw interest with the restricted tag on it him so the Spurs did him the favor of renouncing his rights. They would later be thanked by his agent publicly. The Spurs are aware they have a small Market and they've decided to run a program of Player Development and the team play, much like a college team, and much like a college team the coach is more important than anyone player. unfortunately all your psychodrama is contradicted by Kawhi Leonard's letter to the San Antonio community praising Gregg Popovich and thanking the Spurs organization. As it is with the last majority of ex Spurs players, you forgot to mention that the current Dynasty. Golden State, have modeled themselves after the Spurs Dynasty. And Popovich coaches proliferate the sidelines of the other NBA teams all ALSO singing his praises. You are trying too hard and revealing the ugliness if "hot take" journalism.

Yeah and the thing about the foreign players is stupid! Of course they are grateful about it most foreign countries don't have what we have in this country. And dealing with American kids who though can be poor to many of us, but still not some foreign forms of poverty. He must be a guy sitting the bench or never picked for a real team because every sports franchise is a business and you have bosses you answer too and follow their rules. And if you didn't know look at Bobby Knight, or Phil Jackson and many where it's the coaches way or the highway and he goes for team players not one man shows! You put out good work into this with flawed info and a flawed look at the working world. That's a JOB! It's only our entertainment it's their job. I've seen no one tell their boss what and how to run their company. Only now can you go to HR and cry like a baby and try to change the work place. But now people are so called working on UA-cam stuck in your basements not dealing with real life. Now check, a lot of his players did and do have, as he does a Military Background Structure! Kawhi is of the new era of cry baby spoiled athlete's that see the glitz and glame that is not in the spurs values! An interesting viewpoint. The alternate view is the one that leads to the old saying that there's no "I" in "team". One body made of many parts, each with different functions. The Spurs have successfully epitomised that for a long time.
Those who don't understand the concept of team can only see the world as simply a set of individuals. Relationships are reduced to simply a set of negotiations or power plays. Such people have no concept of "us" or "team". Theories such as the one that was so well explained in this video are unavoidable to people with such a world view.

    • @QuestionEverything562

I don't think one of Kawhi's main reasons for wanting out of SA was the style of play, the system, or the actual play on the court with the Spurs because he still produced big numbers there. It was when Kawhi got hurt, and the Spurs doubted the seriousness of his injury initially, I believe from that point on that Kawhi had made the decision in his mind that he was finished with Dictator Pop and his Spurs. The Spurs all teamed up against Kawhi, Tony and Ginobli both said critical remarks about Kawhi's injury claims. I do believe Kawhi was faking the injury after a while, but at that point when he was actually okay to play, the mistrust and damage was already done. I really hope in 10 years or so that they make a documentary about this whole odd ordeal. I also really think Timmy D retiring in 2016 was a massive setback for Pop's control over Kawhi. I was originally siding with the Pop and the Spurs, but I've come to understand since then why Kawhi wanted out.

At least try to make sense. Your editing and storytelling is still amazing but you make no sense some times.
Jonathan Simmons was a wildcard but that's not why he was let go. He wasn't going to play too many minutes on the Spurs. Kawhi and Danny Green were still on the team and he wasn't going to be able to contribute enough to pay him 20 Million. Also, Simmons isn't a young player. He was 27 when he started getting minutes on the Spurs and I don't see how that's young, at least not as a basketball player.
You talk like David West left the Spurs and went on to put up 25ppg in Golden State. He's doing exactly what he did in San Antonio, sit on bench and play roughly 15 minutes. He left coz he realized there was a team that could make it easy for him to win a ring.
"He never played Tracy McGrady", what are you talking about? There was a reason McGrady joined the Spurs, because he was old and injury riddled and that was his last hope for a ring. You're telling he should've gotten minutes over Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard (or even Danny Green for that matter)?
So, tell me why LaMarcus decided to sign an extension with the Spurs? I'm sure you'll try to make him out be a pedophile or something now just because he signed with them.
He was trying to suppress Kawhi and making sure he wasn't getting any "endorsements", but Duncan played in the same city and still got plenty of endorsements. Is it really everyone else's problem that he's bland and awkward and not marketable?
Tim Duncan was overshadowed by Popovich according to you, but Tim Duncan is considered a top 10 player of all time and greatest PF of all time, how exactly was he overshadowed?
Everybody ripped on Popovich when he decided to bench Tim Duncan and yeah it's forgiven for the same reason that LeBron's move to Miami is forgiven, he delivered on his promise. Spurs won the title just a season after that.
So, who do we believe? Pretty much everyone who has ever played for the Spurs who talk about Popovich with respect even after they leave the franchise or a random guy on UA-cam trying to get people to click on his videos? That is a toughie.

Nope. Americans DO buy into authoritarian parenting, and Pop takes advantage of that in getting the free pass he gets from media and everyone else. A master manipulator covers his tracks...Pop' contemptuous power tripping couldn't be more in-your-face... A "true Marxist"--WTF? There are about 27 "true Marxists" in this country, and Pop is not even close to that description... but I do agree with you, Good on Kawhi for chasing freedom...

Ask Dennis Rodman how the Spurs, Pop, Robinson and Elliot specifically blackballed him in the press when he was traded to the Bulls after his time with the spurs. Rodman wrote about it in his book. Pop never liked Rodman from the get-go and made him suffer during his time in San Antonio. Insulted him in the media, cut his minutes, DN-P’d him even though he averaged 20 rebounds and played with heart. But because he dressed strange off the court and wasn’t a choir boy, Robinson and Elliot alienated him under Pop’s orders. Kawhi is the first superstar player Pop couldn’t control and it bothered him. They didn’t want Kawhi to have endorsements, commercials or other off the court business and tried to control his stats too. Pop famously said on a TNT broadcast to Reggie Miller, he didn’t want Kawhi to average more than 25ppg. He said it was bad for the team smh. Kawhi has to defend the best player on the opposing team and be the leading scorer? Pop only wants international players and G-leaguers because it’s easier for them to buy-in to the spurs cult-ish ways. It’s good Kawhi left. The San Antonio media who are in cohorts with Pop still taking pot shots at Kawhi. BTW Jon Simmons and Dedmon were both ex-communicated after the 2016-2017 season because they had disagreements with Pop. Pop yelled at Simmons all season because he wasn’t allowed to dunk.

Interesting take especially when you add in Kawhi Leonard's current situation. Masai Ujiri the Raptors Team President said in an interview after introducing Nick Nurse as the new Head Coach that he hired a psychologist to interview his coaching candidates to understand their mental makeup and how they would handle certain situations/players. And in Masai's words Nurse passed with flying colors, it's going to be extremely interesting to see how that relationship develops this season.

Professional sports is littered with psychopaths and sociopaths. At 21:00 the video uses the example of other teams siding with the star (Bulls and Lakers), but in those scenarios MJ and Kobe are the sociopaths. Pop runs his team like Alex Ferguson ran Manchester United - he's the head sociopath. Nobody cares about the human cost, because the sociopaths bring home the trophies - this is the reality of ALL professional sports. Not all stars are sociopaths, Curry appears quite balanced (time will tell). That said, I admire Kawhi's decision - I hope he wins one with Toronto.

You say that Pop kills stars. But how? Yeah Tracy didn't get many minutes but it wasn't just some power play by Pop. He had injury issues his entire career and by the time he was on the Spurs he was already done. Pau is no longer the scoring powerhouse he was, he lost his speed and what little strength he had by the time he got to SA. If anything Pop has only shown that he makes players the best they can be. Parker was picked 28th, Manu 57th, Mills 55th, Simmons and Green both undrafted and with the 1st pick Duncan has become at least a top 3 (if not the best) PF of all time. So the notion that he "kills stars" is just ridiculous. Manu didn't say anything really bad about Kawhi, he just said it sucks that he's hurt, Parker has been known to start shit so that's not too surprising from him. The reason Kawhi was traded to Toronto, was because it was by far the best offer. Toronto was dumb enough to give SA an all-star and a young rising center for a rental and player (who is one of my favs) that wasn't living up to his contract. I don't hate or sleight Kawhi for his decision but the ways he went about it weren't ideal for either party. Basketball isn't about the individual, its about the team. I usually love your content but, this ain't it chief

Great video. Phil Jackson was very similar to Popovich. I remember Brian Cooks last season in LA. Cook had worked on his game and developed a 3 point shot. Playing with Robert Horry taught him the value of being able to stretch the floor from the power forward position. Even though Robert Horry was allowed to shoot open 3's, and even though Cook was a very efficient shooter, Jackson was having none of it. Jackson would not give Cook any playing time. Then when there was an injury to Horry and Jackson had to play Cook because they didn't have a back up power forward Phil Jackson was livid with Cook. I remember one game where Cook had 19 points in the first half, was 5 for 7 from the 3 point line, and the team was up 20 points at half time and Phil was pissed. He was in Cook's face yelling at him and didn't play him again for the rest of the game. The very next day there were trade rumors because Jackson was shopping Cook around the league to get rid of him. Just because he didn't submit to Phil's ego.

This video is truly mind altering and a really amazing visual essay. It uncovers a scary blind spot about a man (Greg) who is deeply manipulative and a bully. There are some stories that I have accepted and never looked at critically, but they have a really neat (too neat) quality to them. I.E. The Spurs are a well run and winning organization (They have 5 championships to boot) with a coach that, at his core, cares about his players. Then, why are the Spurs’s stars not the faces of the NBA? Why does San Antonio feel like the Montreal Expos of the 1990’s? The Expos were rarely televised, were in French speaking Canada and few people showed up to the ballpark. San Antonio has none of those problems yet it still feels so isolated. (Yes okay SanAntonio has only one professional team and is in nowhere Texas where the most important sight is the Alamo but other organizations have captured the spotlight (Think Golden State, Cleveland... Bulls of the early 90’s) A true subculture when the NBA is American Popular Culture.

The spurs have made the playoffs 27 seasons since 89-90. Proves they’re a winning franchise. Pop started coaching in 1996. They drafted Duncan in 97 and have made the playoffs for 21 straight. 21 seasons is there streak. That’s called winning. For that coach to be there and make the playoffs 20 in a row! He must be doing something right! He been with the spurs for 25 years. Its called coaching! Which is a lost art of sports. Kawahi wants to be let loose, I understand. But But with out Pop the spurs probably wouldn’t be the storied franchise that it is.

  • @nicholasbuckley3436

I am a Spurs fan, so this could completely come off biased, but the first point he makes about T-mac, Gasol, Simmons and Lee, seems so out of context. He acts as if they are in their prime. Gasol is 38, how is he supposed to be this dominant scorer. I can't think of any center in the late thirties, who was a dominant scorer. And if you watched him play, he isn't agile enough to even beat any bigs. T-Macs career was completely done. By the time he got to the spurs, he was no way better than parker, ginobili, green, or pretty much any guard we had. And the point about Pop taking duncan off as way of asserting his dominance over the players just seems ridiculous. Criticising one of the greatest coaches of all time over a decision which if you really look at it, seems pretty logical. he is only saying this because in his mind, duncan is a better defender than diaw, so he must be on, even though, diaw is a better perimeter defender, and can switch on guards. Do you honestly think he has more basketball knowledge than someone who has one five championships. The point about simmons not playing within a system makes no sense, considering when manu first came in the league, he would play the complete opposite way to the way pop wanted to play, yet he still turned out to be one of the greatest spurs of all time. the real reason pop didnt resign simmons, was because he wanted more game time, which we could not give him, with green, anderson, kawhi, gay and ginobili all playing the same position as him. That is as far as i got into the video. Couldn't stand hearing what else he had to say.

I really like Pop and respect Pop for the most part but I don't respect what he and SAS did to Kawhi. That's life however, you can't be perfect 100% of the time and things just didn't work out for Kawhi and the Spurs. They had a good run together and they should just move on and find success without each other without the bitterness. I'm glad Kawhi that so far Kawhi is showing that he's more than just a system player and is deserving of being called a top 5 player. In the end of the day, players have to do what they think is best for their long-term health...what happened to Thomas should be a precautionary tale for ALL players.
