    • Michael Jordan's Myth:... -~-
The Scottie Pippen dunk on Patrick Ewing IS The greatest Dunk ever. I settle this once and for all here. In this nearly 40min Feature (documentary) The NBA Storyteller explains exactly why This dunk, this one dunk by this one player at this one special moment is THE greatest, most compelling, The Goat Dunk in the history of the NBA.
From all the characters: Scottie Pippen Patrick Ewing, Spike Lee - to the ultra rare "Ultimate Dunk Trifecta" and Ultimate Dunk Humiliations This dunk and surrounding sequences clearly stands above al others.
    Correction
It is Derek Harper, not Ron, who fell down like an idiot

I don’t agree that he shrunk in that game he sat out, never if it wasn’t for him they never make it to 55 wins , never!! Phil should have made a play for him, just like mike!! He deserved it , he lead them, it was his team make or miss.

I'm definitely subscribed and will go back and check out your other vids. I'd say I'm convinced with this being the GOAT dunk considering all factors. Just based off pure style points, I would probably go with Iverson's putback against the Raptors or Dr. J's cradle dunk. For taunting I really like Shawm Kemp's dunk when he points at the dude (can't remember who) and the Shaq one you bring up. But damn, Pippen stepping over Ewing is rough and he gets extra points for doing it again later as you point out.

I came here because I saw one of your comments promoting this video. When you said 'insanely detailed breakdown', my assumption was it would be something like 15 minutes long. The fact it is 37 minutes is the definition of insane and I love it! Your production values are amazing, it's entertaining and hilarious. Like a lot of others, I'm really surprised you've only got 2.7K subscribers. But if you keep this up, the sky is the limit for you. This is as good as anything I've seen from million / billion dollar companies. I've never gone out of my way to praise a UA-camr before, but you sir, have truly blown my mind.

Taj Gibson over Wade. Kobe to Shaq but that was an allyoop. Vince Carter over Alonso Mourning, Kobe over Ben Wallace. Blake Griffin over Kendrick Perkins. Dwight Howard Superman Dunk. There's so many tbh. I didn't even mention Jordan, or mainly Dr.J but idk, I think the greatest dunk needs to be voted on or its just opinionated really. But love the work bro very much. Keep it going! :)

    • @THENBASTORYTELLER
      @THENBASTORYTELLER  6 років тому +3

Brandon Larranaga But what's the story behind all those, what stage are they on- some of those are just an instance, withen a game, a quick exciting flash, in the midst of something bigger. just a regular season game. This dunk is on a big stage, the leads have history, this dunk has tentacles and (as you saw) has story thread the go all over the place. Towards the end I break down What other dunks would need to be considered the greatest. And this one hits all the high points possible. Each one of those dunks you mentioned hit a variety of high points but not nearly as many as this one. Hopefully you see what i'm getting at. (and i do say it right off the top) My scale is not about the 0.7secs that the dunk actually took place. But it's Every single surrounding element that counts In THIS evaluation of greatest dunk. The Kobe to shaq might be a close second - John Starks over Jordan, Lebron over Draymond (if he would have made it in game 7 2016 finals)- those have a ton of stories and details adding to the moment. But they still dont hit as many high points as Scottie over Ewing. Watch it again if you get a chance, and look at the way i'm judging a dunk, and with this judgment scale you should instantly toss dunks out like Taj, and Blake over perk, Dwight Howard in the dunk contest( this is an in game evaluation btw) And yes, it is all opinion, But I tried to lay out my method of evaluation, and how this scoring system can be applied to Any dunk, and This dunk is the only one that passes every single test. I mean, none of those dunks end with a direct in your face "sit yo ass down" to a trash talking Celebrity.

This is pure logic. I saw it live over broadcast TV.
Respect of the golden age of the NBA. I miss when they battled tooth and nail!!!! When true centers could shoot, post-up, block aaaand actually hit free throws.
Then Pippen refined the point-forward position that Magic started! Then led the Bulls (also led the Bulls in EVERY statistic) almost as far as MJ with a weaker squad behind him!

You have earned the title "Storyteller". What an amazing video.- NO! What an amazing FILM! Have you sold this to anyone? So many narrators lose me in under a minute, before the actual video even starts. I thought, how can you talk about ONE dunk for 30 minutes? But I dove in anyways because I'm from Chicago and fondly remember these years. This is way more than narration, more than observation, more than reflection. This is passionate, inspired, well researched, insightful, creative, well written, painstakingly edited and most definitely entertaining.. Just.. WOW.

Shoutout to Pete Myers for everything he has done in his life and for never getting credit for it! Also I would like to acknowledge that by saying "elevation elevation", the commentator maybe just wanted to refer to both definitions of elevation. Oh and the only thing missing in this video is you making up a commentator sound bit (Not saying that this wasn't the best video you've ever made!). So, how would you have reacted/said if you would have been the commentator?

Another GREAT video. And your videos are not just about thoughtful content and coherent concept, but you have one of the best animations and graphics of all youtubers. Respect. Even if I sometimes disagree with something, it's always amazing and interesting to watch anyway.
I also really like your concept and courage to make longer videos with complex view of the story. You are not another short story teller youtuber.
Keep working, you should have 1 million subs ad it's only about time.
And about Scottie - for me, he is one of the greatest basketball players of all time. I love MJ and he is NBA Goat for me, but without Scottie, he would maybe have only one ring. MJ was the best scorer, leader, clutch killer, who decided the most important games, but Scottie was that one man army, humble and brutal allaround team force, which made that team unbeatable. And most important, he could be superstar, but he managed to be that second star to MJ - how many players of this caliber in the history of the NBA could do this?
They absolutely needed each other + Phill to shine and to be the best.
Michael made Scottie, and Scottie made Michael, and Phill made the Team and System. I am disgusted with any disrespect to Scottie. When MJ is the Goat, then Scottie is The ALL-AROUND Goat (who is Lebron James???...yea!). Scottie in his prime could be celebrated superstar in other team, could have crazy statistics and triple-doubles, could have lot more money, could have shoe deals, could have respect like MJ, could be famouse legend even in minds of mainstream weaks. No, he was the real man, he wisely took step down from his ego and prosperity for MJ and team, because he was the Winner and The Legend. He cared more about winning and team, than about money and fame.
And this is, what made him one of the best of the best, not crazy statistics, big contracts, but his winning heart and humble soul and mind.
I have watched all their 1987-1998 playoffs games - and even I was suprised, how often it was not the greatest clutch killer of NBA history, but Scottie, who decided the games, when MJ had not his day. When Michael was killing it and it was 90% of the time, than Scottie step down and made his dirty allaround work, but when MJ took off day, Scottie step up and won the game.
If Chicago won six rings, than half of them belongs to MJ and half of them belongs to Scottie. And who knows, if in their prime, who knows, what if...could by MJ alone so successful like could Scottie without MJ?...who knows, they needed each other to be at its best.
Michael Jordan is the shining Sun, and Scottie is the quiet Moon.
But together (and with Phill), they were brutal black hole, which destroys everything in their way.
Finally, some offtopic - greatest dunk, ok. It's about point of view, you have iconic dunks, physical dunks, original dunks, unreal unhuman dunks (like 720), deciding dunks, blind dunks, two basketball dunks, not NBA better dunks, it's almost impossible to give one of them name The goat.
But what about greatest basketball playoff series of all time? For me, and without any doubt, it's Chicago Bulls vs New York Knicks in two seasons 91-92/92-93. I have seen most of the 1980-2018 playoffs, and these two are in another level. It was not just basketball at its best in history, it was the real war of real men. Like the warrior John Starks said - It will be a war. Who will see this battles, just can not take seriously today's NBA basketball and next gen sissy stars anymore.
Thanks for another original, thoughtful, stylish video!

I've gone back to watching this for more than 20 times by now and it's still funny and intriguing
every time I watch it. (every time enough time has gone by and I watch this, and I hear the line "btw funky physics *is* the answer to how babies are made" I laugh out loud, every time). btw, you are about the main point, taking in all factors this is probably the GOAT dunk, and about your comparison to scenes from national geographic, this is actually the only time in history that the end of a dunk looked like the end of a lion hunt scene. it's kind of like the only time in the history of dunks where you get the whole national geo full episode from a single dunk, so that kind of solidifies your point (and , had to add, scottathon (scottie) is a *beast* and in general deserves way more respect, even more than I've given him till today).
side note: every time you diverge to a side note and then comeback, I feel, all of a sudden, like I'm teleported into an animaniacs episode and get nostalgic about that awesome show, so thanks for that and yada yada yada...

An excellent video production and this is a truly great dunk that deserves to be on any all-time best dunk list. I remember watching it at the time and thinking that it was a truly devastating dunk on Ewing. But...and don't get too worked up just yet [I just subscribed to you!]...the intangible factors here and with so many highly promoted dunks from today's NBA that artificially elevate them onto "best-ever" lists is that beginning around the early 1990s the dunker, the bench, and the announcers really started to "sell" impressive dunks in ways that were uncommon prior to then.
It may have begun with Charles Barkley in the 80s, but players like Shawn Kemp helped to accelerate in this trend - who would emphatically taunt players after dunking on them or swing around on the basket after a dunk adding a little extra flair, gesturing to the fans afterwards helping to hype the dunk...like Baron Davis when he dunked on Kirilenko had the benefit of the announcers really exclaiming the dunk, the Warriors players leaping off the bench in unison to celebrate it, the fans all wearing Warrior colors going crazy, this added extra flair to an otherwise impressive dunk, but not an all-timer...or like the JR Smith dunk where after the ball went through he swung on the rim and pulled himself up to sell an otherwise pretty good, but not an all-time great dunk...or like Dwayne Wade's dunk on Varejao - a really good dunk that got sold by Wade tauntingly stepping over Varejao afterwards and yelling out to the fans along with the emphatic announcing. There was a generational change that emerged in the 90s and went to the next level in the 2000s that turned really good dunks into marketing and celebratory events.
These "selling" antics were rare before the 1990s and older dunks are now getting left off lists because there just isn't the selling flair of those dunks by the dunker, the bench, or by the announcers - just listen to the announcers on some of the great older dunks from the pre-SportsCenter era, they're relatively restrained with their reactions. These intangibles help to market the dunk (and the player) because it's simply more entertaining for viewers, but the dunk itself sometimes isn't an all-timer. The older generations were often more restrained with their expressions or perhaps even respectful after making an impressive dunk, simply trotting back down the court afterwards to get back on D, and their benches clapping along with the fans...not with today's emphatic celebrating and chest-pounding, rim swinging, bench clearing, opponent taunting, and gesturing to the fans selling antics to get replayed on SportsCenter fo the following 24hrs and elevating these dunks to events rather than highlights.

I found out why Clyde tucked his legs when he dunked and it was to make the defender pay for wanting to take a charge. So both of Clyde's knees would hit the defender's chest.

i was totally not planning on watching all of this, but was just curious how you were going to handle it. figured it would be an examination of a lot of different dunks given the length... and then you give a master class in examination of circumstances, story and what makes a specific kind of play great.
result? i watched the whole thing and didn't even realize it until you hit the conclusion. good job man.
