Yes. Otters are a better idea 😀
Yes.
Having seen multiple news shows on Chimp attacks, I'd say that is correct.

Exactly. The word "wild" ought to give people some hint.
People keep buying wild animals for pets and then are surprised when they act wild. 🤦🏻♀️
Yes, it makes me so sad for the animals. This is a problem with domesticated pets too, and some of them go aggressive. People are not prepared to care for the true nature of their pets, they confuse them with human children.
@@user-wj3yr7xr2f your comment is going to trigger a lot of people but I agree with you. I foster dogs and cats. You wouldn't believe how many people create behavioural issues in their animals because they treat them like children. They essentially create a spoiled brat, except this brat can easily over power you and has a bite force that can break bones, and then they surrender the animal to shelters like it's the animals fault. I had to adopt a malamute because he needed so much work to correct all the bad habits his owner caused and no one wanted to adopt him.
@@Freya1412 I do believe you. I too have worked with animals so after a while I started seeing patterns in the owners.
@@user-wj3yr7xr2f yeah, people have weird expectations for their pets. The previous owner of my dog purposefully made him vicious, thinking he could control the aggregation on command. @@marlanaferro1481 😳
Fun fact: the San Diego zoo has to be careful with their keys. The primates will steal them and use them to either leave or barter for snacks. One orangutans stole the keys and snaped one key off at a time to trade them for snacks. When the keys were gone, he gave up the key ring and went on about his business.
@@sirennoir258 That's amazing.
I'm a former funeral director/embalmer (20 yrs) and have seen it all without becoming seriously nauseated or vomiting. Just one look at what was left of her face is proof this attack was beyond extreme and worse than anything I've ever seen. I honestly can't even look at pics of this woman afterwards without becoming nauseated and if I dwell on it - probably vomiting. It may sound cruel or calloused but in my opinion it was worse because after he ripped her eyes out, bit her ears, lips, and nose off and ate all of it - she lived. Personally I wouldn't want to live - just let me die. Ugh. The couple who bought "Travis" as well as his owner are to blame - not him. It should be illegal to purchase any primates or wild animals for this very reason. He was cute but still a dangerous, wild animal who was deprived of life in the wild by those who wanted a pet. 🙄 He obviously was confused and by all accounts it sounds like she was having some kind of sexual relationship with him - "she always had him bathe/shower with her". 😏 What the hell? Her friend paid the price for her mistake of having such a dangerous animal as a pet. What's really sad is he paid the ultimate price for her error.

Having a pet chimpanzee is a lose-lose situation. It’s dangerous for them, it’s dangerous for you, and bad situations are inevitable.
Perfectly stated. Sadly some people can't or won't accept the absolute truth of what you just said.
This is why there must be some limits to personal freedoms. People basically have to be saved from themselves in many instances, especially when so many "adults" are basically just grown babies.
And yet, the police were aware of the Travis situation and did nothing.
You must have all the answers. Maybe you could start a dear Abbey 😁
I have 8 pet chimps and I know for a FACT that it's a win win situation. How do you know it's a lose lose situation if you don't even have one?so ignorant smh
Wild animals belong in the wild. Better for animals. Better for humans.
Many animals benefit from being cared for by humans. Tigers live twice as long in captivity as they do in the wild. However, potentially dangerous animals, like apes and some big cats, should not be allowed in private homes or near human habitations.
@@robertodell9193 Living longer isn't the only aspect of life quality. They may be better off with a shorter, but normal life with a chance for some fulfillment.
@@robertodell9193 thats a ridiculous lie. One tiger once upon a time maybe lived twice. Most "captivities" are petting zoos where they are drugged so they can take pics w kids until theyre too big, when theyre sold into tiny cages in private zoos of oligarchs and sheiks until they lose their money. Then the tiger is sold to a hunting/trapping lodge or taxidermied. Seen it with my own eyes, not on tv ;) The only thing a wild animal benefits from is being wild and being protected from poachers in the wild.
@@evelynwaugh4053 its a lie that they live longer. @Cour Sandi yep. How many wild pet owners lost their money and threw away their pet. Or zoos that are closed to visitors cant get the revenue to care for their animals. I suspect tens of thousands of privately onwned wild animals were put down in 2020
Travis's mother was drugged so they could take her baby and sell it. Imagine that: She came to and her baby was gone and she could never understand why. *That* is what Sandra Harold *knowingly* paid for. It is sad that Travis did not end up attacking *her* instead of her employee, she would have more than deserved it.
Charla Nash actually lives fairly close to me. I’ve seen her out shopping and at the laundromat I go to (someone is always there with her because of her injuries, of course.)

Wild animals should not be permitted to individuals. These are a danger to the general public.
It depends on the animal and what you mean by "wild". Wild as in taken from the wild should most definitely never be pets. However, wild as in non-domesticated animals can be great pets when they are captive born and bred.
Exactly. But animal lovers do not listen to reason when it comes to big cats, monkeys, and even birds. That lady who had the pet bear, from what I remember, did not think anything could happen to her, so sad.
here we have an "exotic pet license" Which is actually quite strict. If you want a pet fox or a venomous snake you need to pass an animal handler training and show that you're able to take care of the animal needs.
@@caroled3943 Well you gotta begin somewhere. Russians already have pet foxes that are much more cooperative compared to a wild caught fox and their breeding started in the 70's. Selective breeding and modern understanding of genetics could speed this process a lot. And if done properly and with care for the animal in quesion, I don't see a problem with it.
@@caroled3943 I don't think you realize what animals are domesticated and what aren't. I also don't think you understand animal husbandry enough to be able to say it is always cruel. When an animal is living longer in captivity than it would in the wild, it's likely because we have been able to achieve proper husbandry.

This is one of his best.
I appreciate how lonely Sandra must have been after her husband died, but to continue to sleep with Travis? To bathe with him?
The first time I read or saw anything about this, I speculated that as Travis was developing normally, aging as a chimp, with high testosterone levels etc he (and his hormones) would have struggled with the loss of his immediate male superior.
It's likely that Sandra would have been more physical with him, probably cuddling with him to ease the distress felt by both of them. However that too would not have been understood by Travis.
I know very little about chimpanzees or other species, but all of that is definitely predictable. It's the same as when you go through heartbreak you'll cuddle, hold and talk to your dog more. The loss of a human male from a dog's life changes the animal's behaviour, and I think that would be magnified greatly for a chimpanzee who's been encouraged to act as a human.
As Dr Grande mentioned, Travis knew Carla, but she had a new hairstyle However I don't really believe that was the cause. She had in the past been phoned by Sandra and asked to help contain him so I wonder if he identified Charla as a "party pooper" - the one who'd curtailed his fun before and so caused him to resent her and attack so as to be able to continue playing. Once he'd started to attack, nature, in the form of adrenaline, testosterone, animal survival and need for dominance occurred.
I simply do not understand the thought process that starts, this is a magnificent wild animal who deserves and needs to be protected and kept from danger, to, we must stamp out all natural urges in this animal, make its life as humanized as possible.
If you're going to spend $50,000 on acquiring an animal, one that you're determined to make as much like you as possible? For starters, where are your values? 50K would pay for a lot of research, a lot of protective agencies for wild life, especially back then.
I have read that as well as being given Xanax he was given alcohol, albeit a small amount, but it was a usual daily occurrence and he'd act up if he was denied it.
Humans don't really deserve animals.

You can never fully predict a wild animal’s behavior.
No one has a RIGHT to own a chimpanzee.
Exactly. If they can't be released to a life in the wild, they should live in a sanctuary or a zoo where experts can give them a life as close to that of a wild animal as possible.
The ironic fact is that many such purchasers think of chimps as near-human. Which-- if they thought it through-- would mean that trafficking in higher primates is essentially slavery.

He travelled to Alaska to become one with the bears, he became successful, a bear ate him", Dr. Grande you said that with a straight face, did you have to try several takes or is it a natural ability?
The dry humor is comical 😂😂
He's genius
Dr. Grande....I love your sense of humor. The best!
Good afternoon Dr. Todd. I enjoy your videos.
This is such a tragic story in so many ways. I feel so bad for Nash and Travis. They both paid a great price for something neither of them were responsible for.
Preach
I feel so awful for animals like this that are put into such difficult situations. What can be expected under stress....
Me too. Most likely Sharon was the best thing to happen to him. But he must have been so messed up by the time she got him. They had him on Xanax. I mean, Jesus...
Lol, yeah it’s awful. Maybe we should have organised some therapy for the poor chimp.
Well at least we now know what it does to chimpanzees.
This piece is causing me to rethink my apartment rhinoceros.
I love Dr. Grandes sense of humor. This man is awesome.
The Doc delivers the driest, and best, sarcastic burns.
Im actually crying with laughter 😭.
A DMV driving test examiner... 🤣😂🤣😂
It's humor heaven!!!!
NO ONE does it better 😂
This reminded me of something Chris Rock said years ago when one of the Siegfried and Roy got attacked by their trained tiger and everyone was shocked and calling the tiger crazy. He said something so funny and true it stayed with me forever - “tiger didn’t go crazy, tiger went tiger” ...These ppl purchased a WILD APE at 3 days old, took him away from his mother and natural habitat, treated him and fed him in such a way that was unnatural and against his instincts and genes all of his life, and didn’t expect that one day he will attack? ultimately cost his life... Sad and moronic
Exactly! And once a chimp is taken out of it's natural element it can't be returned unless it happens pretty quick. The other chimps will reject the chimp if it is away for too long. So to take a chimp is doubly cruel because it's being taken away from where it is supposed to be and also ensuring it can never return.
😂 Tiger went Tiger.
Chris Rock was in his element in that special. Brilliant.
True!
Considering Chris Rock was in the jungles of Madagascar, I'd say that was on point.
How you managed to get through the first part of this without collapsing in tears of laughter is beyond me. Riding in towtrucks... sleeping in bed with the owners, dressed himself, used the toilet, did his chores... where can I get a kid that good?
Saw this story when I was a bairn, freaked me out for life. Will never forget it.
Why your name is entity
"She knew that this was the logical action, but her own pain prevented her from taking action, she was lonely, depressed, the relationship with Travis was something she just couldn't give up. Sometimes people can't handle one more loss"- 🙄😐 Wow Dr. Grande! This really resonates with a narcissist break-up!
It's bad enough what happened to Nash. Imagine if it had went off on someones child.
Buy a HEMI. A car won't rip your face off.
@@cathylindeboom638 wasn't Nash herself a child of someone else too?
"Travis the Chimp was born in October 1995"
Those millennials
LOL!!! 🤣🤣👏🏽👏🏽
Bwahaha 🤣
Months after I was born.
Me being born in '93
*spiderman pointing at other spiderman meme*
Goteem
Luv your sense of subtle humor. 😆
Great analysis, as usual.
This is awful! Hearing her plea with police is heartbreaking. 1st we all know that the purchase if Travis should not have happened in the first place. Though one could not forsee cancer, the responsible thing to do would have been to see Travis off to his new home in a sanctuary. That way her husband could have said goodbye, known he would be safe and know that he wouldn't be leaving his wife with all the responsibility of taking care of Travis through her potential grieving process. I understand that Travis was all that was left for her, saying goodbye is extremely hard, especially given the circumstances BUT was holding onto Travis truly that worth it? The owner not only lost her beloved chimp she also caused harm, near death to a dear friend as well.
I hate when people forget that animals are animals. Even their pets. Even the cutest tiny lovely puppy can become aggressive/deadly if they feel attacked.
Some kids come and touch my dog without asking me. If he bites a kid, he would be killed :(
Humans become aggressive and deadly in pretty much the same way, except no animal is making a t.orture or r ape dungeon.
Dude, animals torture just for fun. It's not even rare.
I have a rescue dog who ended up in that situation. When she was 5 months old she bit toddler who was giving her a 'bear hug'. That kid must have scared and\or hurt her. She sure isn't a mean dog. A couple of my cats attacked her once. She got one down and held it down with her chest while she turned her face away so the cat couldn't reach her eyes. I grabbed the other cat who was attacking her back end by the tail...that's not a mistake you make twice.
There are some things about that mutt that continue to amaze me to this day. You never know a rescue dogs whole story, but she has a forever home where she can run loose now.
Completely agree!! I can’t tell you how many large parrots-especially cockatoos-wind up in shelters because they’re still VERY much wild animals and people didn’t anticipate that. All birds, no matter how well behaved and cared for they are, scream and bite. While they are remarkably intelligent and personable, birds go through hormone seasons that turn them into buttheads or little perverts for a significant period of time and those natural behaviors send them to shelters.
Even though I have a parrot, I don’t even know if they should be pets. That being said, my little princess needs me to sing her night night song and tuck her in for the night because Lordy is she throwing a little fit 😆
@@SilknSass76 Pets love us so do unsuitable pets. We haven't really domesticated them. We just fit into a survival strategy that they evolved. That wild spirit is always there.....
This is tragic in so many ways. The lady who was mauled, the other lady who was lonely and living with this chimpanzee and in the end, a wild animal who should've been living in a sanctuary with other chimpanzees.
Instead of her a man she got a monkey 🙄
No one can dead-pan deliver dry jokes better than Dr. Grande...NO ONE!
Steven Wright would like a word...
...and you do this with a straight face...I'm impressed!
If you retold this exact story without mentioning that Travis is a chimp, everybody would assume it's a story about Florida-Man!
😂🤣😂🤣
😂😂
Yes! Down to him looking her in the eye then continuing the attack
Especially when he said Travis took Sandra's keys at had a drive around town. 😂😂😂
Hello Dr Grande, I have a suggestion for a future video.
Brian Wilson, the lead in the Beach Boys, was a genius in music, probably the most genius musician of the last century, but he fell into addiction issues and then fell into a very abusive and at the very least, odd relationship with an infamous therapist. He was also the victim of childhood abuse. I'm leaving out alot of details but that premise alone seems like good material.
I 2nd this one.
He’s schizophrenic
And Charlie Sheen
Don’t get carried away with your “most genius” label. It’s a matter of taste and most would disagree.

Your reply says more about what you dont know than it does about me.
Fascinating analysis of this terrible case.
If Proper licensing and enforcement action were taken.....nuff said.
You are so measured in your approach and impressed with your delivery. Thank you 👍
Doc I haven’t even gotten through your intro and I already am anticipating laughter
Michael Jackson sent Bubbles to a sanctuary when he became aggressive. He was still young then.
And that is saying something b\c Michael Jackson did not really have a firm handle on reality.
The last time I heard about poor Bubbles he was in a tiny cage in some hellhole, in a documentary about Chimps that are no longer "cute"..I cannot stand to even look at pics of MJ and that poor animal, every time I think of what happened to him, and a long, long, lifetime to live out his sentence.
@@chetmaklin3138 A lot of those `sanctuaries' really aren't, they are basically a way to defraud animal loving donors out of cash.
@@evelynwaugh4053 what the hell, that is horrible! I guess I shouldn't be surprised, since there are horrible people who foster kids just for the money and mistreat them.
Bubbles is at the Center for Great Apes. I don't know where you got that other nonsense. He's living free on several dozen acres of land.
Travis in addition to naturally be unpredictable due to his species, had also undergone significant changes and loss. His “sister and dad” had died and were no longer in his life. His “mom” was putting a lot of emotional pressure on him. He was rarely going out, and was going stir crazy. Was he her sole source of companionship? What was he watching on TV? He was overweight and getting old (makes me depressed). Travis snapped. And once that ball got rolling, it was a juggernaut
He liked using the computer. Wonder what he was looking at?
yeah, I watched a video of this before but I was kinda feeling like travis was the villain but them other videos that I watched put more information about how Travis was treated by her owner, so now is more clear that Travis was not mentally stable. even if he was a real human he will going crazy for not going out, having not social life.
@@rowanjoy419 its also very possible that Travis got angry because that friend took his favorite toy. She probably wasnt allowed to touch it. Both of them didnt understand how chimps react
And then... add drugs! Seems he had some bad effects there too! Poor guy. A whole bunch of sad, unfortunate decisions cost lives. So sad...
Again, he was a monkey. Because chimps are easily trained and interact with humans, it is ridiculous to think of their state of mind as human. They do not have the frontal lobe capacity of humans and therefore, they don't reason as humans do nor do they "feel" as humans do. What was he watching on TV?? Planet of the Apes???
Good analysis Dr!
Well in Threadwell's case, the dude was mauled and killed in a very gruesome manner, whereas in Sandra's case it was not HER face that was brutally ripped off. But, at the end of the day, I do feel that Sandra had a very sad life and she finally was freed of miseries forever.
This is why I support bans on exotic pets
Far too often they’re owned by people who have NO idea what they’re getting into and are sold by brokers who don’t care who’s buying them or where they’re going as long as they get their fee
Yes it's always the dumbest people who do this. No long term foresight. Impulse control.
Personally from experience from working in a zoo and I’ve worked with monkeys I still to this day do these animals should never ever be in an enclosed space like that not in a house because these animals always have a predatory insect
A friend of mine had a nephew that was mauled by two male bobcats. Had the police not entered the cats home with a riotshield, they would have been mangled because one immediately lunged for an officer's face. Both had been shot once they got in the house. An older woman bought them but said she found them in the woods as orphans. It wasn't the first time she'd owned bobcats, or the first time one of hers had been euthanized.
i love how you talk about travis’ backstory the same way you do anyone else you analyze!
Dr. Grande, I can't help but laugh at your dry sense of humor that subtly appears in your videos. Your soft voice, great intelligence, and subtle humor would make for a great podcast!! Thank you for being you!
That was such an awful thing. I have thought many times about the poor lady that was attacked, and how that incident totally ruined her life. Very interesting video.
Sandra Nash is one of those people that I feel so much sadness for, whenever I hear of this story it makes me so upset. What a horrific thing to happen to a person and to try and recover from (emotionally and physically, she lost her face...I can't even....). Animals, even more so than us, pick up on stressors and emotions and I wonder if the chimp was on edge because he missed her husband too and could feel the sorrow and depression of his owner. He certainly would be aware she was crying and/or numb all the time, on top of him already being aggressive and on meds it would add to it. No one should have exotic animals as pets.
No chimps were diagnosed in the production of this film
Somehow, your profile pic made this comment even funnier! I’m imagining 'collar-and-tie cat' delivering this line straight to camera, reporting the story on the evening news.😹
😂😂😂😂
Can we all agree Dr Grande is the absolute best !!
Dr. G !!! Covering everything !!!
“He wanted to become one with the bears.... he succeeded, he was ate by one.” Love your dry delivery.
I feel so bad for both the victim of the mauling and of Travis’ death. Once Travis became unruly, he should have been given to a sanctuary. So sad. :(
The other chimps would have rejected him
@@joanbaczek2575 yep Travis wouldve gotten fuuucked up in a sanctuary unfortunately
He should have never been in a home, treated as a pet, treated as human. He was a wild animal.
@@joanbaczek2575 no if workers know how to organise chimp groups, it should've been a new group, getting a full adult male in an old one could be a disaster.
He wasn't 'unruly'. He was being a chimp. It was stupid of the woman to expect him to behave like a cuddly pet in the first place.
Ppl shouldn't be allowed to own wild animals point blank, and if they are found to have them, they should be subject to fines and possible jail, no exceptions!!!
Excellent article.
