Steroids in Dogs and Cats: should you avoid prednisone? (essential guide!) - Pet Health Vet Advice

  • Steroids in dogs and cats can be a really powerful, effective treatment but steroid side effects can also be really severe. Steroid in dogs and cats are very powerful drugs that can treat many different diseases. Prednisone side effects though can also be really challenging for both you and your pet to live with.
    Find out which diseases steroids treat, the side effects to look out for, when steroids should never be given (or only be given with care), and how to monitor your dog or cat while they are receiving steroids.
    Steroids are used to treat inflammation, they can treat many cancers (the most common being prednisone to treat lymphoma in both dogs and cats), they are used if the body is not producing enough of it's own, natural steroid, and finally steroid in pets is used to reduce an autoimmune reaction or damp down the bodies immune system like an allergy.

    I hope this post helps someone. My dog was put on 5mg per day of prednisone for an ear infection. 2 days after stopping the drug he spiked a fever of 105.8 and had tremors that were violent. He was belching and very lethargic. By the 2nd day and with absolutely no input from my vet, I decided to give another dose of prednisone. I felt that he would not make it through the night. The fever broke and tremors stopped as well as the belching. After some more research, I found that he was having withdrawal from the drug and was heading into shock. I am going to taper again in much smaller and smaller dosages until he is safely off this drug. The vet had him on 5 mg every other day for 15 doses. There is not much information on this out there so I hope that this helps someone. My vet was useless once again. If you find a caring vet they are priceless, but I have not had that good fortune.

      Thanks this really does help our cat is also having with drawls from this drug even with tapering. I called yesterday however the vet was unable to get back to me until they were basically closed. We were down to half a pill a day but the vet suggested she get bumped back up to a full pill a day. I’m hoping for a similar outcome thanks!

      If it was an ear infection then it would be far better to investigate the infection and find out if bacterial, fungal or mites first then treat with the appropriate medication such as antibiotic etc etc. stay away from steroids as the side effects can be disastrous…. There was no need for steroids….very nasty stuff. In my opinion they should only be considered in emergencies …….or life and death situations. Many dogs with allergy problems are put onto steroids which in the end kills them! They are given out like sweeties!

    After reading through these comments why in the world is this medication being given to pets? Sometimes we must question what the protocol is and do more research on things. I see doctors and vets just following orders like robots. What is going on with the medical establishment, human and animal? It has went downhill drastically and it is time medical personnel start questioning things if they are seeing an increase in deaths or side effects from a particular medication, regardless of what the they are being ordered to prescribe. I was prescribed this to give to my cat and I am glad I looked further into this. I am disappointed after paying an enormous amount of money to a vet and they are so incompetent that I had to take my pet back twice and still things are not resolved. The veterinarians should be guiding us and offering solutions and education. But no, I have had to do my own research on several things with my cat, after paying a lot of money, shameful. I will likely have to put him down now, way before I intended to do so.

    I appreciate your video! It has helped me to better understand what prednisolone is and side effects it has in cats. My cat is on 10mg of the liquid version for asthma. My vet wanted to start him on this as a trial basis. I ran out of his meds Saturday because they only supplied me with 8 days worth due to extra not being in stock. Well since I couldn’t get anymore until today he has started to sneeze and has been hiding a lot. I’m assuming it is because of withdrawal, not totally sure. He is also fiv positive. I mentioned it to my vet and they said it is more than likely it is from sudden withdrawal. I administered his meds today and I’m wondering if the symptoms will go away.

    I wished I have done more research on prednisolone. Maybe my dog would still be here with me now.
    My dog was diagnosed with liver disease in August. He has lost his appetite and starting to lose a bit of weight . The vet prescribed him prednisolone tablets 1 mg for about three weeks 2 times a day and there were no improvement. He was also taking Denamarin .
    Then they put him on 5mg 2 times a day for about 3 weeks . He did started to eat a little but was still losing weight and having diarrhoea. His fur was falling out and his toenails just breaks off . So the vet said reduce it to 1 tablet a day. But my dog was getting worse and getting weaker and sad everyday . Two weeks ago he was struggling to stand up . Just laying on his bed . I need to carry him outside.
    I knew I had to make the difficult decision . We had him put to sleep last Monday. He was 13 years old . We miss him so much and I feel very guilty because if the steroids was not working. I should have stop giving it to him then maybe he would still be here 😢

      I had a sad story like that myself. Yes, near the end we could choose ourselves what to give them as an alternative. Sorry for your loss, it is so difficult to do or have happen. But we must remember, our pets do not live forever, right? And no do we...I suppose that is what helps me handle the deaths of our beloved pets. Liver disease once it takes off, it really does a number to an animal no matter what you try to do, sadly to say. I just lost a cat with that three weeks ago, so I feel your kind of pain. God bless them all.

    Our new cat had been having asthma attacks so we've started her on prednisolone (10 mg tapering down). I'm worried that it's something in the environment because our other two cats have periodic asthma attacks (but nothing like the new had had - only periodic 1-2 times / year). So changed litter and have bought an air filtering machine. But because asthma typically is only 5% of cats, I'm worried this is something chronic w/environment. Then I just read that popcorn ceilings could cause asthma like reactions, and we have those, so I'm going to get the ceiling substance tested for asbestos now!

    hi Doc, my shitzu got into a fight with my terrier and his one eye got hurt and is red and buldges out a bit bigger than the normal one, our doc gave us predisone for him to take and when he took one pill, about 7 to 8 hours later he started having crazy diarrhea, and all throughout the night 8x we counted,. At the time the vet was closed so we stopped giving him the meds since they told us to give him 2x a day for the first 3 days. we monitored him ever since he took the med and he only ate his normal dog kibble. He has never had diarrhea before for the 8 months we had him until taking this med. Is it a good idea to totally take him off this med? Or do we have to taper it off slowly...thank you.

    We’ve tried cytopoint for allergies for my dog and it didn’t work unfortunately but apoquel does. Can you use apoquel long term due to it being an immunosuppressant or is it okay to? Thanks!

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  4 роки тому

      Absolutely. Apoquel is also designed for long-term use in the case of allergic skin disease. It is much more targeted than typical immunosupressants, and while monitoring is needed there is not such a worry with side effects. It also has an anti-inflammatory action which is why it can work when cytopoint fails if a dog is known to have atopic dermatitis (the specific form of allergic skin disease cytopoint treats). There are other strategies that should also be used to help manage dogs with skin allergies and you might be interested in this video - ua-cam.com/video/HRTG9De-msw/v-deo.html

    Hello and thank you for the very informative video. My dog was diagnosed with immine-mediated anemia a little over one month ago. He was put on Prednisone therapy (10 mg. 2x daily after his meal.) He has also been a diabetic for seven years and is getting insulin 2x daily, 20 minutes after his breakfast and dinner. The reason I am writing is that his muscles have atrophied considerably, which is making his quality of life not so great. He was a very high-energy dog, and now, he can hardly make it up four steps. Is there exercises I can do with him at home to help strengthen them? I look forward to hearing back from you. Thank you!

    Hi there. Late 2019 my cat Angel was diagnosed with mild asthma. Since then Ive taken natural & organic step within his environment at home in which has helped him greatly, thankfully! (Humidifier, no scents/cologne/candles/smoke & changed his food) But because asthma is a progressive chronic disease I've been afraid like so many other parents to turn to prednisone due to its infamous reputation. Ive taken him to another vet simply for a 2nd opinion& he suggested just the puffer instead whilst the other vet insisted on prednisone.
    Im so confused as to which option is best for Angel. The puffer or pill?

      If the asthma is well controlled then puffer treatment is likely all that's needed. Prednisone is often needed during flair-ups, getting initial control, or in those cats where inhalation therapy doesn't control the disease well enough (or cats who don't tolerate a puffer)

Her bloods were all fine, and a needle biopsy showed a slight rise in her white or red blood count ( not sure which one sorry ). She was put on a course of antibiotis as well as predisilone liquid .08 ml once daily. after 11 or 12 days i ubruptly stopped this steriod, as my cat didnt like it and i also wasnt told not to stop it suddenly. within 3 days my cat stopped eating, was lethargic, unsteady on her feet, and became jaundice. i rushed her to the hospital and new blood results showed a slight rise in liver results, slight anemia, raised heart rate, fluid on lungs, and she died the following day. Please tell me this was not my fault ? are these symptoms relevant to stopping this steroid cold turkey or not ? i need to know the truth please tell me

      Yea I did a lot of reading on steroids and you can't just abruptly stop them. The way they work suppresses the function of the adrenal glands I believe. So you have to stop the steroids slowly so the adrenal gland function kicks back in it took over a week doing my cat off of steroids but now her autoimmune disease is attacking her feet again so I'm debating on do I start her back on steroids to prevent her feet from turning into mush and let her hair fall out. She has got issues with the liver and kidneys and gallbladder I'll keep be made worse if it's an infection because steroids suppress the immune system they cost 600 bucks to get an ultrasound to find that out everything they use to diagnose her condition cost hundreds of dollars and I'm reaching my limit

    She's got asthma and allergies, and her target weight is 13lbs, but she's heavy. She was getting 5mg prednisolone, but it wasn't effective. She just got over pneumonia and was having severe asthma attacks nightly. Her doses over the last two days, every 12 hours, have gradually increased to 30mg, and her Albuterol. It's not quite lasting the full 12 hours either, but I have not seen such a good color in her ears and nose for months. I'll be very careful with the gradual lowering of the meds and careful with how long she's on 30mg after watching this. I'm also glad I bought more than she needs, so her weening down to 5mg again is less stressful, and she won't run out prematurely.
    Thanks for the warning! Hopefully, she'll only need her rescue inhaler after all of this, though that looks like weeks to months away.

    Hey my cat has been having diarrhoea on and off vomiting picking at his food in the mornings or skipping and then wanting food every couple of hours in the evening. Loss of weight. And I’ve noticed him drinking water which is unusual. He is 15. I took him to the vets 6 months ago pdsa they couldn’t seem to find anything wrong with. I now know lymphoma intestine cancer or similar is hard to diagnose. I took him back on Monday and this is what they think he has. Still waiting for blood results he has had an ultrasound. They found a large mass in his intestine. And something in kidney and Harding. Around bowel. They have put him on 5ml of this steroid you are talking about in this video. Pdsa do not do chemotherapy but want to know if o would like to be referred. Do you know how much chemo would cost privately as I know this may or may not prolong his life.
    Thanks

      from memory, chemo costs around £300/month. This would have been from a few years ago when I last workied in the UK and I may also be rememboring incorrectly. Also if the referral is to a specialist oncologist then costs are likely to be higher. Whoever you see should be able to advise you of expected costs and likely prognosis. As far as prognosis goes, cats with diffuse lymphoma have a life expectancy of about 9 months with chemo, although a subset of those that do respond will still be alive several years later after going into complete remission. Some though will unfortunately not respond and so live less. Being on steroids for weeks before starting chemo also makes the potential success much less likely

    Hello.
    Our 13 year old male field springer spaniel had 5 bad teeth pulled 5 months ago. The colour of his mouth and breath improved. That was good.
    Four weeks ago, he started coughing and after 12 days, I took him to the vet clinic. The vet noticed a lump - described as lymphoma - on the furry side of the throat/neck that I had not noticed. (The vet could not see down the throat.) Say the size of three stacked 25 cent pieces. A sample was sent to the lab and that was reported to me "inconclusive of cancer". Nine days ago he was put on 15 mg prednisone. On the 6th day that was reduced to 7.5 mg a day. He has had a strong appetite, increased water consumption and peeing. Bowels are normal. Since his teeth being pulled 5 months ago, we recognize he is an older dog and tires more. He does pant more the past weeks, for whatever reason.. The coughing has reduced this week. He has seen more resting and sleeping in recent months. Perhaps this lymphoma started two - three months ago? Today is 24 Feb 2024. We are hoping to have him around this summer for camping and swimming, but recognize cancer may take him any day given a cancer prognosis once detected is a short 4 to 6 weeks, I have read.

For the last week, we have tried some medication for nausea, pain, and acid reflux to treat the symptoms. Unfortunately, my cat is still having some symptoms, and my vet wants to try steroids as the next step. I'm very worried about potential side effects, and I'm not sure if trying steroids is appropriate considering her condition is considered "mild". I've heard that some cats have had success putting their pancreatitis into remission by changing to a low carbohydrate diet. Do you think I should try to switch her diet first before going on the steroid route? Thank you.

      Pancreatitis often goes along with liver disease and inflammatory bowel disease in cats (a syndrome known as triaditis). In some cases steroids are absolutely appropriate to manage these conditions. Cats are also much less likely to experience side effects from steroids, and if they are needed to make your cat well then in my mind are a risk worth taking. I would suggest talking to your vet about your concerns though

      If we are using long term steroids and feel they are the only option because of the disease or costs of alternatives then the general rule is to use the lowest effective dose. What this means in practice is that different individuals will be able to be maintained on different doses. It's about what works for them - some might need a low daily dose, others may be good on twice weekly dosing, it really depends on the individual and disease being treated. It may be that there are other treatment options (for example with asthma we can use inhalation therapy like with people). I would encourage you to talk to your vet about wanting to persue alternative options if any are available, and you always have the option of getting a second opinion if you don't feel heard. It may of course be that unfortunately there are no real other options.

It's a total game changer for pills that don't taste good, and if you have multiple meds that are safe to give at once, you can put more than one med in the capsule and administer- so you can cut down on how many times a day you have to pill your cat. Our cat's mouth was hanging open with tongue out, labored short breaths, & had to take her to kitty ER & get a shot of 10mg Cerenia Monday evening (she had 102+° fever) after having what the Vet thinks was an asthmatic attack and still 2 days later she can't walk more than a few steps at a time before laying down again. Dahlia's 9 yrs old & her hind parts are a little crooked as she walks (she had blood work/iv in back leg), she's lethargic, paranoid, her head has had a little bobble to it, her pupils are quite dialated since getting the shot, (they've gone back and forth in size), she has only eaten a little fresh chicken breast, she finally fell asleep last night so hoping she'll make a full recovery. Still scary and we want to help her more. She's never had any health problems before. I think it was brought on by stress as the landlord had to do his annual house inspection & people had to come in to get estimates on new central AC unit and water tank in the basement. Dahlia hates people in the house & she burrows & hides far away from them. Also it was 90-95° outside during last week & inside, even with fans, it was still 80.° I'm worried heat stress & house work has contributed to her having an asthma attack.
    Has anyone experienced this with their cat? How are you dealing with it? Does anyone think it's the Cerenia shot that has caused these terrible side effects? Dahlia has liked being gently brushed and has purred. I sure could use any advice on this. We are still terrified that she won't make it through. Making an appt with out vet for a follow up. Our sweet boy passed away in January after only 1 week before that being diagnosed with congestive heart failure. We know Dahlia doesn't have that after blood tests for it. The vet wants to leave him on 2.5 mg every other day indefinitely but I’m not sure. He says at that low dose there will be no side effects. He still walks 2 hours a day but I do worry about him. He seems more calm now than ever and just stares at me now in the eyes. Ignores other dogs totally now even his friends. They prescribed 0.6 mm/cc of Prednisolone, twice a day for 7 days, then once a day for 7 days, than once every other day for 7 days, to my cat because of a muscle injury to her back left leg. Is it important I give it all? She hates taking it as much as I hate giving it to her cause now she avoids me. Can it just heal on it's own if I stop giving her the med?

      My cat pulled a muscle in her leg and I let it heal and didn't go to the vet. Then I got a kitten and everything was great they were running around the house but then one day I realized she injured her muscle again. Now it's taking longer to heal because the kitten tries to get her to play. So this time I did go to the vet I was hoping I could get something like a kitty ibuprofen and they gave me the steroid. I have no experience personally with cats or myself with steroides I just was very hesitant my instincts were don't give this to her. So it's Saturday morning and she is still not better a week and a half after we went to the vet. did not give the steroid and now I'm considering giving steroid so I got on UA-cam this morning to gather some information. I see you posted 8 months ago please tell me how your cat is doing and did you ever gave it steroid? after seeing all these comments about pets passing away, not feeling comfortable with this at all I hope your cat is doing well please tell me more about your situation

    Hi, thanks for a great video. I believe prednisolone killed my dog. We took him to the vets for a anal problem and he was prescribed prednisolone. He had been licking his bum excessively for a couple of days, but on the third day he started gnawing at it and made it bleed. It looked quite nasty so I put some sudocrem on and the following morning it looked fine. He started his treatment the following day, taking four tablets a day. We gave him three doses but after this, he vomited a great pool of blood up. He vomited twice more throughout the night, once again massive pools of blood. We took him to the vets immediately and they said they’d call us once they’d done some scans. They called us back to say, he’d have to be put to sleep because they’d found a tumour in his stomach, which had ulcerated and bled. I believe the medication brought this on, because, apart from licking his bum, he was fine. Prednisolone, seems to me, to be a very dangerous drug.

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  2 роки тому +3

      The steroids may have increased the chances of the tumor bleeding, although I suspect this is highly unlikely and steroids are actually a very common drug to give to treat various cancers in our pets. It certainly didn't cause the tumor. If you have further questions I'd suggest talking to your vet who may be able to give you some more accurate answers than I can speculate at. i was wondering what your opinion is on medications for fear based dog aggression/reactivity. you have a couple of videos that touched that topic a bit but none really going in depth - unless i missed it^^
    there’s lots of information out there but all so confusing. not related to reactivity but as an example - one of our dogs hates fireworks, new years eve is a nightmare. one vet suggested some drug (sorry, forgot the name). skip forward a year - different vet - we asked for the drug again and he said “big mistake, drug just seems to help but makes the fear worse. give her some alcohol instead”.

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  5 років тому +1

      a drug called ACP used to be used to sedate animals who had phobias but was found to just cause them to be slow and sluggish without reducing the fear they were experiencing and as such could make things worse in the future. There are different + newer drugs that can be used that do actually reduce the amount of fear a dog is experiencing. Examples would be diazepam or alprazolam, fluoxetine, trazodone, and oral dexmedetomidine.
      I would never recommend giving a dog alcohol.

    never be used is the one month shots. Because the smallest environmental threat can kill your cat. Should be used on indoor cats only. Health problems usually start with neutering and
    vaccines. And china sourced cat food. Seen the healthiest cats that have never been to a vet. Although antibiotics, anti fungal meds(good luck getting them prescribed) and narcotics
    sometimes work miracles.
