  • What are the common dog cancer signs? Dog cancer symptoms? Cat cancer signs? Cat cancer symptoms? There are 10 cancer signs and symptoms that pet owners shouldn't ignore. This video is part one.
But, just because your pet has any of these symptoms doesn't necessarily mean they have cancer, but you should bring your pet to your veterinarian.
Early detection is so important. If we can catch cancer early and take our pets to the veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment, we can greatly increase their chances of survival. The key is knowing what those signs and symptoms are.
Cancer is often treatable, and treatment is well-tolerated in the majority of dogs and cats.

Our Doberman, only five years old, was diagnosed last November with Osteosarcoma. He showed no signs except for a a fire y but more tired than usual but we were out exercising together a LOT and that time of the year leading up, where we live, is quite hot. Other than that he was completely normal. Then the day or so after Thanksgiving (on that weekend) he got up from a nap and was randomly limping. I took him to the vet that Monday. They X rated and the radiologist said OSA. Took him to the cancer specialist and they confirmed. We then scheduled his amputation. Some doctors tried pressuring us into chemo. They said we would be lucky to have six months but probably only 3-4 months. The the prognosis was barely any different but with chemo side effects so we opted against it. So we have kept him on a good diet, stretches, regular exercise (but noting too high impact), car rides, snuggles, and other fun stuff! Nine months later and he’s doing phenomenally well! He’s a very happy boy and we take zero days for granted. God bless ✝️🕊️🙏🏻 🐾

My English Pointer passed away a few months ago. She was getting up in age and there was behaviourly changes. When we went to the vet, similarly blood work was normal except for thyroid. Starting on thyroid meds did nothing but made things worse. A follow up 10 days later showed a large tumor high up in the chest. It was a shock to hear that this was the cause, but deep down inside for months prior I had the sneaking feeling that we were approaching the end. We did the best for our buddy all her life and putting her down was the only option. It is sad to have the bad memories of her demise overshadow, the best memories of so many years. All the love I have had for all my previous dogs is now focused on our new dog as I recall all the best times with all my past furry friends. God bless them all.

too many Vets only care about money. It cost more for my dogs to go to the vet than it does my wife and I to go to the doctor. Hell the vets we have here suck. Hope you arent like these vets here.

I know firsthand how important it is to find lumps early. My dog had swollen lymph nodes in neck in the PM but not in AM that same day. They were huge.
I brought him to vet 2 days later and vet rushed him to hospital for testing
They were amazing and I’m so grateful for their care and concern
He was diagnosed with B Cell Lymphoma 3A six days later - it happened so fast I felt like I a tornado was spinning me around and dragging me along for a terrifying ride. But….
We found it early. His prognosis is 90% full remission for 10-12 months.
I’ll take it! And cherish every day with him
Thank you for these vlogs ❤

Often, cancer can result in a really voracious appetite, like they can't get enough food. That isn't always to do with cancer, That can happen with a dog or cat who has had a lot of exercise, missed a meal, etc. But cancer growing demands nutrients. This is an unnatural appetite.
Also note the smell of your dog or cat. If their smell changes, that can be a sign -not always of cancer, but of some physical changes, which may not have yet shown up as symptoms.

I'm so sorry for your loss Marc! I had to put my baby to sleep on Saturday due to that nasty cancerous tumor in his heart and spleen. I had no immediate sign other than a hacking cough which I believed to be a respitory problem. Nothing that would even lead me to consider cancer. He ate, urinated and pooped fine! It's so hard losing a love one, but he's with me in spirit!!! Your boy is forever with you!!!

This advice is really good. My cat recently had a sore bottom, soft stools, more urine in her litter tray, was slightly off her food and had been sick once. My cat had been diagnosed previously with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which is diet controlled. Blood work showed inflamed pancreas, anemia, flare up of IBD and the very beginnings of kidney problems. During a follow up exam at the vets I held my cat and felt a very small lump on her mammary. This has come back as mammary cancer. Her symptoms were very subtle as she is still seeing off cats outside. If you live in a country that allows your cat to go outside keep a litter tray. It gives you a chance to check their stools and the amount of urine in their tray. Another sign my cat was ill is that she laid on my hand on the side of her 2 mammary tumours which was a new behaviour. Any concerns see your vet. 💕🐈

Disease starts in the gut, insufficient exercise, toxic food, toxic water toxic environment can compromise the natural immune system. Know the natural ways to bust the immune system and what makes it weak is key, make sure your pet detox everyday and takes optimal natural raw nutrients to reset and renewal the natural immunity so can fight anything that is compromising the defences, same with humans.

Wow Dr.Sue, I’m so happy I found you! Most importantly, I am so grateful & thankful you are passionate about what you do to take your own time to post these videos/blogs! I work in a pathology dept. I assist in FNA procedures.. but on humans.
1st?: I found a lump on my dog (paperanian) in the prescapular location, had FNA performed, told lipoma, I asked for the slides/results. I only received one slide. I’m curious what’s your policy in office at your practice routinely performs? Is it a typical veterinarian practice to collect an aspirate on only one site of a lump/bump and not make a smear? I received a diff quik stained slide, not a pap stain.
2nd question: I’ve noticed a cluster of “lipomas” on my dog in the same location where there was previously only one. She also has one new lump/bump on her L. Axillary L.N. I would like a follow up FNA/biopsy on both locations at each site. Not sure if I should see a different Vet/office or simply ask these questions? Just do not want to offend anyone at the same time my dog is my only child, furry or not she’s my one and only.
Do you happen to have a video on, “How to approach your veterinarian and staff with questions regarding: care, necessity, protocol, and maintenance?” Or “have you ever thought of asking questions but hesitated?
I apologize. This has become an epic novel of a post. Your insight, knowledge, & experience on any of these topics would be greatly appreciated! You rock Dr. Sue!

My first sign was not eating. 2 weeks later, after a couple vet visits later, I had to put her down at 10:00am yesterday. That’s when they found it. It was so bad and so sad. Big mass. Lots of fluid. Slowed down. Could see the pain and the want for help in her eyes.

Also she hasn't vomited or anything in these 3 months. But is still looking slimmer. I wonder why. I took her to the Vet just the other day for her skin issue, I thought he would say something about the same but he didn't.

My 13 yr old 16 pound poodle that was a rescue had breathing sounds like snoring. Or copd in a human. We took her to vet. She was very active healthy looking barking. Only prob breathing. Took 4 trips to vet. In an ultra sound liver cancer, the mass was pushing on her lungs. No other signs other than breathing, she ate good everything she always did just struggling to breathe. Right now only pain meds can be giving she still
Eating good. I know time is close. I though I would add this in case any1 else’s dog had breathing issues recommend ultra sound. Cause all her blood work was good. So sad right now. If was my choice I would let her go now. Idk how painful it is or if the pain pills make her struggle more. I do know it’s end stage. Thanks

I have a brother and sister, 16 years old, who both have been having health issues. The boy vomited several times a day, the girl had frequent accidents of loose and bloody stools. I took them in for ultrasounds, and they both have lymphomas. Their sister died from lymphoma about 3 years ago. I find it very odd that three cats from the same litter should all get lymphoma. They are currently on prednisolone, and I will not go the chemo route for them. Since starting the prednisolone, the vomiting has almost stopped and there are no more accidents. But I know they probably only have months or weeks left.
I had another cat several years ago who developed a vaccine associated sarcoma in his thigh. He had surgery 4 times on his right leg. After the last surgery, the cancer did not recur. He ended up dying of sudden cardiac failure at age 16, seven years after we first discovered the cancer.

My fur baby of 14 years has leukemia and apparently her white cell count is over 600 which I was told is way too high. My Lola won’t eat much and is losing weight a lot. She vomits a lot but she eats her treats and still drinks water but doesn’t seem to care much for anything but her treats and her bones and ribs are showing.
She’s has radio graphs to confirm this. Everything you described is what my dog has.. not sure what to do now.. do I let her go? I’m devastated.. she’s my best friend and companion.. I love her with all my heart.. I don’t want her to suffer.. he suggested an oncologist but admitted she’s so old and coughing and vomiting and not doing well and that the cost for chemotherapy would be astronomical to just then not be able to cure her cause of her age. He looks we should let her go. What do you think?

Hi Dr. Sue -- We are going back to the vet in a few days but want to know you opinion on the possibilities of disease for our dog:
On Wednesday 12/25, our 5 year old male mini poodle dog met his cousin (my sister's black lab) for the first time. Our dog does not socialize with other dogs much however my sister's lab does all the time. This information may or may not be relevant...
On Friday 1/3 we felt a firm grape-size lump under our dog's jaw on the left. On Saturday 1/4 we took him to the vet and were prescribed antibiotics with a follow up in 10 days on 1/13. He had a slight fever at the vet too. Over the weekend that lump grew bigger and the dog began evening sneezing fits, water eyes, some lethargy and not much desire to eat his regular food (he does like rice and ground beef though when his stomach is upset so he'sat least eating that). We took him back to the vet on 1/6 for an aspirate sample, bloodwork and chest xrays for fear of lymphoma. On 1/7 the cytology showed no cancer, the bloodwork looked fine with no infections, and the xrays were clean. The dog still had the fever, some lethargy (but slowly improving) and those wild sneeze fits mostly in the evenings. Today (1/9) he still has all those symptoms, has slowly shown signs of wanting his regular food, but that firm mass remains relatively unchanged since it got to be able the size of a boiled egg cut in half... We can only guess this is maybe influenza, maybe a tooth root abscess, maybe who knows what?! Do you have thoughts?? We are going back to the vet on 1/13.

      Adding to my post:
The reason I ask is because our regular vet is out for the week and we've been seeing a sub. We will see our regular vet on 1/13 but a second opinion (even if it's by my description here) would be appreciated... consulting Dr. Google, I can't find a darn thing about all those symptoms together, the main two being sneezing and a firm mass under the jaw.

My 9 uear old standard goldendodle started limping out of nowhere from front rigjt wrist/paw. Took him to vet this past sunday and did x rays. Vet was almost 100% sure it was bone cancer by looking at xrays. They did a biopsy on sunday too and they called me Wednesday with results. They said he has no cancer, and that has a benign tumor in his wrist. I have another appointment this Monday for a check up. Right now he is on mess for 10 days and he is doing fine bit still limping a little bit. Will they do surgery to remove it cause obviously it's causing him discomfort. There is no need for amputation right??

Curious if you recommend aspirating vs just having the lump removed and then tested afterwards?
From what I read, aspirating can free cells and have it grow elsewhere and spreading.

I also heard about this. I have a vet visit this Monday for my dog Summer. The lump wasn't there 2 weeks ago when I last gave her a bath. Today I found a hard lump on her back left mammary mass and it is at least 2 cm. I'm going to ask the vet to remove it with surgery and then test it afterwards to avoid this issue.

My 14.5 year old Cattle Dog started having appetite issues in January and lost 2 lbs in February and then by May 27th it was obvious she lost a lot of weight. I took her in the next day and she had lost 7lbs/9 total since February. She weighs 34lbs. Her liver numbers were high so they did an ultrasound. Her liver was over 90% abnormal. Liver function wasn’t horrible but also not great. Her clotting was fine. They want to do a True Cut Biopsy, but I’m on the fence. I feel like with her liver so abnormal and her not wanting to eat that palliative care and possibly seeking a homeopathic doctor might be the better option. I’m so torn. In my gut i feel like she’s disconnecting and I’m terrified I’ll make a decision that hurts her. It’s so sad.

homeopathic doctor < = Hack charlatan. I know this is a forgone event, but It is important to say this, Palliative care is what I tend to go with for the older dogs, as even if you could cure it, that damage needs to be repaired and that is much much harder on the body down the road.

Also I have been told by my veterinarian that cutting into a tumor that may or may not be cancerous is a good idea. It’s not a good idea if it is cancer it’ll spread the cancer cells faster and this is in humans and animals. So sometimes I feel like the medical community also thought miss information and why is that take a guess I’m not gonna say it because I don’t want to be censored

I have a question! So I took my dog in for a check after seeing small masses on my dog. my vet said that she couldn’t get a fine needle aspiration as her masses are way too small, but recommended removing the masses and her mammary glands. I went ahead, managed to get some money together, sold my soul to the devil (since everything is extremely expensive), and got a surgery scheduled. The surgery is in 2 weeks, ( 4 weeks after the discovery of the masses). My dog has been active, happy and eating correctly, no abnormal symptoms, and the masses have not really grown too much. But I’m worried about metastasis and the fact that vets don’t move fast enough due to their busy schedules. What are the odds of metastasis during a supposedly early cancer stage, after the discovery of pea sized lumps. How fast does metastasis usually happen?

I have been going to vets for years and can’t get an answer. My dog has a literal gold all size bump on her cheek. It started off small, and the first vet said, yes, cancer. Nothing we can do, bring her back when she tells you it’s time. Well, over a year and a half has gone by and she’s still with us, but this lump keeps getting infected. We have an appointment again Friday morning and this time I’m not leaving without an answer. They just keep treating the infection and sending us home. I need to know if this is hurting her! Because if it’s cancer, I don’t want to keep her suffering!

She was in pain, and once she gave us that look letting us know...we knew we had to let her go. She gave us an amazing 15 years. We found a new vet, and she said she wasn’t willing to operate because of her age, and she would have had to remove some of her upper jawbone. All of a sudden during the summer, it just started growing bigger by the day...and it got to the point where she couldn’t close her mouth, and it got pretty yucky. We are pretty sure she had cancer.

A little over a month ago he started showing symptoms of stomach distress (he would whine in the morning and evening after his walks) and as it got worse we went to the vet. The vet had to give him anesthesia to just feel his stomach and take an x-ray. We got nothing concrete.. But he's not getting any better and it breaks my heart that he is in pain. They are there for the love of money, and they take pleasure sacrificing animals. Stay away from conventional medical system and look for holistic functional medicine, choose vets that actually aren't married with big farma. When a pet gets flees and parasites means their gut isn't healthy, there is sludge that needs to be detox, parasites love unhealthy weak systems.. Do not give them chemical anti biotics, that creates more disease, but look for natural herbs and natural food (raw) and ORGANIC and if they want to fast let them fast, industrialised food and stress makes animals sick.
