      Game Sack WURM: Journey to the Center of the Earth for the NES. Really late title that is part vertical shmup, part horizonal shmup, part first person "shooter" and part platform adventure action game like Golgo 13 (many people from the first Golgo worked on this game). It's a mess, and not great but very interesting.

      Another great game for this series, "Henry Hatsworth Puzzling Adventure for Nintendo DS. Awesome, half platformer, half PUZZLE game! Truly unique an dowuld fit this series perfectly! And it's really really good. hack and slash action platformer and 1/2 puzzle game with blocks.
      Another great one, "monster Tale" For NIntendo DS. It is 1/2 metroidvania platformer adventure, and 1/2 monster pet raising and leveling and the monsters al level up and assist u too and u can feed them down in their home on the bottom screen. Reaslly amazing game.

    *ActRaiser* has that crazy combination of action platformer alongside a build-a-city simulator.
    Luckily, it's a great game and the two genres work surprisingly well together.

    (in a weird electric voice) THE ADVENTURES OF BAYOU BILLY

  • @zorochii
    @zorochii 6 років тому +1

    Spore. It starts off as you controlling a creature, then it's an strategy game, then when you start to understand that they ditch it and throw you a different kind of strategy game. Then space, where you can't even see your creature.
    Also Evoland, which sticks to RPGs and I understand the concept but still it's kind of weird.
    And finally, the first Act Raiser. Action platformer plus real-time strategy.

  • @davelygrave21

    The Bayou Billy comics that were published as a tie-in to the game actually retain some decent value. They were drawn by Amanda Conner.

  • @almightycinder

    Hybrid Heaven on N64 is a good example. It's a 3D third-perspective game like Resident Evil... until you bump into an enemy. Then it's an RPG-wrestling hybrid, where you use turn-based RPG menus to fight the monsters with your wrestling, boxing and kickboxing moves. You're also a blue mage, so the only way to learn new moves is for the monsters to do their wrestling moves on you. It looks really weird to see this skinless broccoli monster pick you up and do a power bomb, then while you're still on the ground, put you in a Boston crab.

      His channel really makes me appreciate how much of a genius programmer he is. The way he managed to get a full FMV intro on a regular genesis cartridge for Sonic 3D blast, not the Sega CD and not requiring special chips, is incredible. That should be impossible you'd think. When I was a kid playing it back in the day I didn't really get why that was such a special thing. His Directors Cut of Sonic 3D Blast is on the steam workshop for the genesis classics collection if anyone wants to try it. Also it's available on sites like Sonic Retro to play in emulators. Fixes all the issues with the game. Mind you I loved it back in the day anyway, though I know I'm in the minority.

    Earthworm Jim 2 is another good candidate for this category. It's all over the place, as far as game design goes. Same with a little game called MDK2 on the Dreamcast. Which was jumped between 3 or 4 different genres all throughout the game.

  • @doctorhandsome
    @doctorhandsome 6 років тому +1

    Vice: Project Doom on Nes is a great game with side scrolling platforming (and even cut-scenes) similar to the Ninja Gaiden games, but also has overhead driving stages and shooting range style stages.

  • @Wyrdwad
    @Wyrdwad 6 років тому +4

    Obligatory, but Golvellius definitely counts, seeing as how it's an overhead-view Zelda-style game that suddenly becomes either a side-scrolling platformer or an auto-scrolling overhead shooter as soon as you enter a dungeon.
    Falcom's Star Trader mixes RPG and shmup in a different way than was covered in this episode.
    The Adventure of Little Ralph on PS1 is a Ghosts 'n Goblins-style platformer, but with random fighting game-style bosses thrown in from time to time (and it's also a really damned good game!).
    Speaking of fighting games, Vanillaware is pretty good at mixing fighting game-style combat into RPGs. Just look at Princess Crown, Odin Sphere, and/or Muramasa.
    And for an obscure totally-out-there title, I recently bought an MSX game called "Cosmic Psycho." The disks are moldy and need to be cleaned, so I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but it's apparently a hentai visual novel... with shmup stages mixed in. Hopefully, I'll get to see how that turned out sometime in the near-ish future! Because I am definitely very curious.

    My favorite hyrbid game, based on one of my favorite cartoons, is Tintin in Tibet. First stage is a multi layered side scroller, next level is a swim stage, next is a side scroller this time where you run back and forth doing errands, next you are in a hotel going up and down the floors to talk to different people etc. Sometimes you have your straight forward side scrolling stage, but these are only about 1/4th of the game. One level has you autorun down a slope while avoiding obstacles, and another has you scaling a mountain side where you need to keep your stamina in mind.
    And the sequel, Tintin and the Temple of the Sun has even more variety, with one level having you traverse by kanoo while fighting aligators, one level has you riding the claws of a condor down a mountain while avoiding everything from falling rocks to cliffside branches, and yet another level has you run towards the screen running away from an avalanche.
    The Tintin games are, in my book, the kings of gameplay variety.
    I still prefer the less technically advanced GameBoy Colour versions, as in the SNES versions they have stuck a little bit too close to the original comic artstyle, so interactable objects and platforms can sometimes be hard to distinguish from those that are just part of the background.

    I don't know if you would count it as a true hybrid game, but I am a huge fan of The Goonies II on NES. Most of it was really fun platforming action, but then it would switch to a first person view with typical commands like GO, PUNCH, TOOL, and the like. The first person exploration I thought was really fun because you would find items you could use in those sections like ladders and keys, plus you could find different weapons and armor like a boomerang or a helmet. I still play The Goonies II at least once a year and enjoy it just as much as ever.

    Joe, here's a tip about Final Lap Twin: In the Quest mode, if you want to run away from battles, you need to have better car stats than the opponent that challenges you.

    So, Final Lap Twin and World Court Tennis are the grandaddies of Golf Story but with racing and tennis instead of golf years before Golf Story. Neat.

    Would you guys ever consider shooting not on a green screen again? I love the different locations from your older reviews.

    Life Force. Contra. Rescue: The Embassy Mission. Three Stooges. Dick Tracy. Even some Sonic games might qualify.

      About Mr. Bones, the game developers cant decide if they want a side scrolling platformer, or a musical interactive, or a shooter, or a joke teller, or an overhead/underhead? view kind of game

    I quite like Urban Strike as a multi-genre game. It has the isometric helicopter shooting levels but then does a bit of a Blaster Master and you land your helicopter to do run-and-gun stages too.

    I’d personally prefer that you called the episode “Games That Contain Multiple Established Gameplay Genres,” because many of the games depicted DO know what they want to be, and that’s a multigenre game. When I think of games that don’t know what they want to be, I think of multigenre games that have one or more of their genres undercooked.

    I'm so glad you included a mention to Mr JB's channel! Thanks
    Also, idea for future episode: Demo scene for several consoles! It could actually be a special edition of the Hardware Pushers series.

    Vice: Project Doom (NES) - A Ninja Gaiden clone featuring top-down shooter Spy Hunter style stages & rail shooter stages
    Xexyz (NES) - Part platformer, part shoot-em-up. The final boss stage is like a 3D shooter section

      Video games, work, working out, friends, avgn and game sack are all good when you need to get your mind off the shady bz. Finding another girl and taking in what you learned is the key. Oh and never forget to wear a hat! Check out the late great Patrice O'neal for his outlook on women. Helps a lot. Good luck to ya!

    One multi-genre game I would recommend is "Mr. Bones" released exclusively for the Sega Saturn! It's a mind-screw of a game from a story and gameplay perspective, but you won't be bored. Give it a shot!
