I prefer most of their other albums. I do love crack the skye, but I feel like I have to listen to the full album to get proper enjoyment out of it. I hope they play it all the way through on this tour though.
Just heard an interview with Bill ward on eddie trunk from 2009 and bill suggested this song he said it's brilliant. Who can argue with a founding member of black sabbath.
I think crack the Skye is their best album. Other albums have some good songs but this one I played through about a hundred times at work. Especially the longer songs, just proves how musically gifted these guys are.
the second best album is blood mountain, crack the slye is their best album, their best songs are, the last baron, the czar, divinations and quintessence, mi favourite songs from the album, the song crack the skye is good too.
My all time favorite album period. Any genre, any artist - nothing else comes close. I worship and revere this album. This is the holy grail - Mastodon's epic: Crack The Skye.
An album about the drummers sister's tragic death, a spiritual journey and a dramatic retelling of the story of Rasputin culminating in the best metal album ever. And don't try ans argue, this is a really important album to me because my parents put it on all the time when i was little and i still listen to it as inspiration for writing and help getting through shit
@@yoloswag6242 better to me, i grew up on Divinations and The Wolf is Loose, not Megalodon and Mother Puncher. Don't get me wrong it's an awesome set of albums but I'm definitely biased

Same happens today. Of course, most kids care about mainstream crap, but there are still the metalheads, the undergrounders, etc. Most of my students turn older, and come back to me saying.... "now i know who trent reznor is"
This album still remains one of the greatest albums ever created. The lyrics, story, and musicianship are all top notch and of the highest quality. This song especially, it just sounds like epic conclusion song, whereas most albums the last song ends and you're just like "cool, good album its over". But this, this wraps up the journey and sounds like something that would play at the end of a 2 hour epic movie that just wraps up and ends in a glorious fashion so when it ends, you know the journey and story are over. Lucky enough to catch them a few years ago on the 10th anniversary tour of this album with Coheed & Cambria and they played this from start to finish and it was everything I had hoped for

I bought the special album that you could open and look in to and see all the great art. Then I listened to it. Seven songs was plenty. Probably my favorite album from them.
Oh for sure. And Last Baron is their magnum opus. Easily the best song they've written. Even better than Blood and Thunder and Diamond In The Witch House (those two songs being tied for my 2nd favorite mastodon tracks

Highly recommend them if you've never listend to em.
One wonderful aspect of this song is that it intentionally touches and brings closure to the first four albums. You can say the same of the entire album, beginning with the cover art having all four symbols, but this song really feels like a perfect epilogue.
@@topuscuatro It mentions the other three elements, for one (fires/set the world ablaze; the Sea; the Earth). There is also what sounds like nods to individual songs, like Crystal Skull. It all goes with the sense of finality of the whole song. The lyrics are about the past and going to rest, and the music sounds like mourning and warning at once.
@@AxiomApe It’s explicitly about air/ether/the void. The first four albums are a series and after that the band retired the classic cover design with the traditional logo/font/symbols; at least until Emperor of Sand, which is also meant to be about a single element, more or less - death.
This is the darkest, most psychedelic and mesmerizing album I've ever heard. Definitely forever in my Top 3 of all the albums Mastodon have released to date. What a great band, I'm an unconditional fan of these guys.
Because the band doesn't have a clear leader, they all feel equally important and work towards the songs&stories, not personal preferences. So, beauties like this are born
Being a mastodon fan for years and sorta overlooking this album (idk how but i did) i finally have been giving this entire album an insane amount of attention, and holy shit. This is the best concept album i have ever heard, and definetly one of the very best top notch pieces of art i can think of.

Has to be one of my favorite Mastodon songs, a journey through the deepest weirdest corners of an alien world, especially Oblivion and this one always make me feel like I'm in a tiny little space ship on my way through wonders never seen before... Its that certain magic that made me fall in love with them, they later then convinced me with all their other stuff to like them even more
I can remember being 12 or 13 and hearing songs of this magnitude and anticipating every note. eyes closed a million miles away. life can sure be grand sometimes!
This was the first song I ever saw them play live. I know I'm a little late to the game, but these dudes are the real deal. They have a unique chemistry and have forged a new path for metal bands. There's no pretention; no bullshit. Yes, it's commercial. But so was Zeppelin, Ozzy, Megadeth, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, all the great metal bands.
How this riff comes in. The complexity of Playing it properly (sorry most covers play it wrong with hammer ons and pull offs on the D string) and again the way it’s incorporated into this progressive master piece is so bizzare yet so perfect. Literally unreal.

This album is their Opus magnum. And this song is the culmination of it. It's like a mystical dream.
This is how mankind should be remembered . Fuckin crushed it
10 years! ... it's timeless. it might be one of the best things we as a species have had the chance to experience.

I think crack the Skye is their best album. Other albums have some good songs but this one I played through about a hundred times at work. Especially the longer songs, just proves how musically gifted these guys are.

An album about the drummers sister's tragic death, a spiritual journey and a dramatic retelling of the story of Rasputin culminating in the best metal album ever.

One wonderful aspect of this song is that it intentionally touches and brings closure to the first four albums. You can say the same of the entire album, beginning with the cover art having all four symbols, but this song really feels like a perfect epilogue.
Could you please explain this??
@@topuscuatro It mentions the other three elements, for one (fires/set the world ablaze; the Sea; the Earth). There is also what sounds like nods to individual songs, like Crystal Skull. It all goes with the sense of finality of the whole song. The lyrics are about the past and going to rest, and the music sounds like mourning and warning at once.
@@LegionHimself Yup. And this one being Air /Ether
It’s how I always interpreted it anyways lol
@@AxiomApe It’s explicitly about air/ether/the void. The first four albums are a series and after that the band retired the classic cover design with the traditional logo/font/symbols; at least until Emperor of Sand, which is also meant to be about a single element, more or less - death.

Hold my head on stable ground
Watch as the Earth falls all around

Past the king of swords, quickly to the shore

As your wing is my shelter
Cyanide he craves
