NT Beach Fly Fishing - BRUTAL Aussie Saltwater Fly!

- On a recent fishing trip to the Northern Territory of Australia with my cousin and uncle, I spent some time shore based fly fishing from the beaches and headlands a couple of hours from Darwin. For a soft southern troutie like me, the salt water fly fishing up there was both unforgiving and amazing. I felt seriously under-gunned fishing an 8 weight with 30lb leader, at times it felt like I had brought a pool noodle to a gun fight.
You don't necessarily need to have a boat to access good fishing in the NT - there are certainly some great shore based opportunities, provided of course that you exercise common sense and caution.

Really great quality and enjoyable to watch.
I was able to determine that you're using a TFO Axiom 2, which is a Kevlar-based rod. I watched a guy in the FL Keys land an 80+ lb Tarpon on an Axiom 2 7wt, so on an 8wt you should have been able to land a sea monster. Your assessment of a loose ferrule is accurate because if you were high-sticking the fish the top section would have broken. Ferrule wax will eliminate the sections getting loose. If you don't have access to ferrule wax, a kids' birthday cake candle can work in a pinch. I use Loon Ferrule wax to avoid that issue.
