Not your average fly fishing session

- Took the fly rod out to the surf for the first time trying to get lucky and catch some surf perch or even striped bass. I was using an 8 weight Sage Fly rod with 7.5 foot tapered 16lb test leader and a sand crab imitation fly.

As a young man I went to class to learn how to Fly fish it took me three months. But I got it down pat. I am a 74 years young and I truly enjoy all of your Videos. Did quite a lot of salt water fishing and fresh water also. Keep. Up the great Videos!!! Always one Sportsman too another!!!!
Thank you!
Pro tip: stretch the fly line before each fishing session. When the line is stored on the reel between fishing trips it develops memory. I loop mine over the side mirror before I leave the parking lot. You can also loop it around a tree or post, don't loop it around a rock ( will nick the line). Walk away until all the flyline is off the reel, going from the reel to the mirror and back to your hand. I give a couple good sustained pulls of 40 lbs or so for 10 seconds each. Another tip is when you get home strip all the fly line off the reel, leave it attached to the backing on the reel, and hang it in long loose coils. Also rinse and wipe your line after each use before storing.
Good advice. I've never fly fished before, but a friend of mine wants to go this spring, so looking to get the equipment soon and I'll follow your advice. Thanks.
I cant wait to try this tip. I'm a beginner and wondered how to keep that from kinking
good way to break your mirror and tear your line on a tree
Keep your rod tip at the water while you are stripping. Also practice a "strip set" for salt water fly fishing. Lastly try a non slip loop knot. It allows your fly to move a lot more, for a more natural movement on your fly. There are pros and cons to a stripping basket. I don't use one, but a lot of people do. Well done! You got a lot right!
Agree with everything but a stripping basket is all but essential in this situation.
I like a basket for surf and estuary fishing
I'm a New England saltwater fly fisher. Stripping baskets are a must if there's moving water or weeds in the water. Agree about keeping rod tip close to surface. I especially like the use of wading sandals instead of clunky wading boots. IKEA has a white step stool for kids which makes a compact stripping basket, about $6.
I’ve been wanting to try this for a while now! Excited to see how it goes for you! Good luck with your hip surgery!
Not a big deal, at least not for me. The HIP is a strong joint ,had both done between 2004 and 2007. Was back to work in3 months.
I've been wanting to try this "hip surgery" thing too!
@@indicaking LMAO😂!! Should have specified I was talking about fly fishing for perch.
@@jttraina4516 having surgery to repair joint or for osteoarthritis is quite different from having surgery for a tumor its kinda insensitive to talk about someone else's experience and say it's no big deal or try and relate for attention.
Dude! I've been wanting to try this for ages! So glad you finally made a video about it.
Stoked on your first surf perch with the fly rod! Can't wait till I get mine! 👍🤙
# 1 Fishing videos FL! The slow mo example is great! I've been wanting to learn to fly fish for a while now. When I get the chance I'll be referring back to this video. Thanks again buddy.
You effortlessly explained the fly setup to people who know nothing about it. Thank you. Awesome video I've often though about this as I fish the same areas as you. I just have no clue what to do with a fly rod.
Thank you Matt, great to see you out again! I used to TRY to fly fish, I learned I suck at it:)
You remind me of my older brother who passed a decade ago.
You both look alike and plus my brother loved fishing too. I miss him a lot and just knowing how you carry yourself and how you talk and have passion for fishing. It is sweet to know and see how you resonated resonated my older brother
P.s my brother name is Michael
I found out your name is Matt
I started fly fishing in 1984, but I gave it up because I was too busy raising 3 kids by myself. I want to get back into it, but I'm waiting for warmer weather here. Thank you for this video, which reminded me how much fun fly fishing is! I hope everything goes well with your surgery.
Great video! You provided a glimpse into the past for me because my father fished for surf perch with a fly rod at the beach in Cayucas during the 90's. He weighted the fly to help keep it on the bottom and was quite successful. Thank you for the great shots and your reminders of being careful and respectful of the surf are spot on. A young soul was lost at Muir Beach recently who was washed off the rocks while fishing with his buddies. They tried to save him but they were drowning as well and were unsuccessful. Be safe my friend! Chuck
Nice bro good to see a fisherman who's not afraid to try different kinds of fishing styles
I don’t know anything about fly fishing but I know a lot more after watching this video. Thanks man.
So excited when I saw you posted this! I love fly fishing in the surf. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for taking us along on your adventure. I hope your surgery goes well. We will be here to support you. Sucks that you had you achilles tendon surgery and now this. God bless tho brother.
Glad to see you finally fly fishing the surf! There’s no more challenging environment to swing a fly rod. Just wait till you hook into a Striper on the fly! Great stuff as always!
I've often thought fly fishing is more fly than fish. But once you try it, and once you catch a fish, you're the one who's hooked. Great video, as always!
fly fishing CRUSHES you just need the right environment and enough space with no trees around your head its super precise and flies destroy fish they love it.
Watching you from Klamath falls Oregon like how you talk fishing nothing else and you take the time to explain what you doing for the beginning fishing people
I think the color on that jacket is perfect as is. I'd definitely wear it
Thanks for the video Matts and good luck with your hip surgery 💗🙏🎣🌟👍
Living the life, bro! Wishing you a well and speedy recovery after your surgery.
W O W ,,, VERY WELL DONE 👍 THANK YOU FOR YOUR DEDICATION AND PASSION THAT YOU BRING TO THOUSANDS OF US,,, PLEASE STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY,,, TXS. AGAIN…
I was so stoked to see the title! Love the switch up fly fishing video! Great idea man
Great video, Your fly fishing has improved a lot! One tip, when stripping the fly back in, keep your rod tip lower to the water and pointed directly at the fly. This helps you feel a strike more readily. I’m sure this can be difficult with waves but thought I’d mention it. Also, check out a “strip set” when fishing with streamers. It’ll help you hook up with a much higher percentage of fish! Keep the fly fishing videos coming!!
I just recently watched some videos about fly fishing the surf and then this popped up in my recommendations lol.
Beautiful video
I loved seeing your reflection mirrored in the wet sand from far 😎👌great shot
I’m going fly fishing for perch!
As soon as I saw the notification I was clicked straight to the video, exited to see what happens
Your ingenuity never ceases to amaze me hahaha
So I've been watching your videos for a while and you have no idea how hooked I am. You deliver some of the best content on UA-cam. Very much worth watching right before bed with the lights off all comfortable.
The places you visit are breathtaking, you are very lucky indeed to experience something like that. I also see how you like to camp in the middle of nowhere by yourself, I know you're probably an expert but please be careful man, never know what's out there. I look forward to seeing more of your videos! Stay safe!
Wow thanks for the comment. I've got some crazy ideas I want to do over the next year but I'll be careful as much as I can!
Thank you for doing some fly fishing in the surf! Bait-chuckers always overlook the fun of flies as do flies bums overlook checkers often.
Awsome idea , your pretty good with that fly rod. Thanks for the tips , I'm novice at fly fishing and its been awhile since I've done it. Might have to try some. Thanks again
Crazy how far you’ve come with fly fishing. Been watching for a few years now and I remember when you first tried it and were in a river going to trout I believe. Went from asking for tips to using all the proper terminology.
Oh yeah I remember that video too!
No no i like that jacket i really teally like that jacket. The color too. Great video on the fly. Definitely will try this on the surf!
This is making me want to bring my fly rod along with my surf rods when we visit the in laws in Oregon! Would LOVE to see more!
Great explanation of loading the rod. Good job!
Very helpful, you are a legend from Frikkie, Cape Town South Africa
This was awesome, you're getting really good!
Mission accomplished! Congrats on your first bro!!💪💪
Had to get on my upright bass with that chill music at the beginning👍
Fly fishing is one of my favorite ways of fishing. When I moved from the mountains to the beach I've wanted to try this exact thing lol. I've been tempted to bring a fly rod out on the boat I work on. Love the vids and everything you do
Might as well if you can!
@@FishermansLife agreed the season opens up on the 28th and the boats going out so I might have to. For anyone looking for a good time around the channel islands, venture or anywhere near try channel islands sport fishing. We've got a great fleet. And for a 2 day check out the seabiscuit.
I love fishing so you explaining all this even knowing everything you’re saying specifically doesn’t bother me . It makes me feel good like that class you loved to go to on Wednesday .
Gary stemper is an OG with this. From rockfish to stripers in the surf. He kills it
Good job. You pretty much got all your terminology correct. Your casting motion is actually pretty good for a rookie. Your casting wrist is on a very good horizontal plane. No wonder your line is shooting out fairly well. Make sure you’re always wearing sunglasses. Surf flies can often get into your face or back of the head depending on the wind or if your fly is hitting the water at the end of the forward or back cast and weighting down your fly. Be safe out there.
again right on time, been sick and at home and this video made my day
Much love from Minnesota.
Absolutely loved this video! Thank you
Yes love to see the fly in your hand.
I've been wondering about hitting the surf with a fly. Thanks for the demonstration.
I couldn't flyfish to save my life. But, I have to admit, it looks really cool. Beautiful day for fishing. Thanks for the video.
Fresh brother nice job!!! Looks beautiful out there!
Broooo that coat!!!! Definitely getting me one!! Not sure if I would prefer the camo over that color. I mean I like em both!! Either way definitely copping myself one when available. Also, I've never fly fished in my life but I appreciate you explaining things. The more detail the better for novices like myself lol. Thanks homie🤟🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great video !!! Grew up fly fishing all over Oregon, salmon, trout, steelhead. Just pulled the rods out this week I’m in HMB. Hope to run into y’all 🎣
Hope everything works out with your surgery and you have a fast recovery
Awesome man congratulations on your first surfperch on the fly!! Iv been out there many many times tossing flies for surfperch with no luck. Yeah definitely a stripping basket helps tons I did a few outings with out one and it's a mess lol
You crazy Matts! LOL!
Good luck on your surgery!! Hope for a speedy recovery :)
Heck yea Matts. I think I was more pumped than you when you hooked up hahaha. I mainly fly fish for trout but when I surf perch I will use the Carolina rig with a fly lol. I've been wanting to fly fish for surf perch for a while now. Thanks for the info. I now have some confidence to actually try it out. Bless up brotha 🙏
Great video!
The guys at Lost Coast Outfitters have some great gear and info for fly surf fishing. The have some fly rods that are custom made for the West Coast Surf.
That’s amazing how you knocked that out can’t wait to try this for myself great stuff skippa keep up the great work and hopefully 🙏 one day we can go link up to do some catching lol 🌅🛸🎣🤙
Awesome video as usual
Cool Video! This is what i do when i fish for seatrout. two pro tips: if you have the linebasket on your side-hip, you will be able to get more line in one strip, because its a longer distance aka more movement in the fly. You could also point the tip of the rod towards the water and the end of the fly rod higher up (Where the reel is) towards your arm, when you strip in. If you do this, you will feel the strikes much easier and can set the hook easier aswell :)
You've got nothing to apologize about your fly fishin style, man, you have a gr8 cast.ive been flyfishin all over, started in the 50's.the only complaint I've got is trying to get leader through the eye of the hook
Well done bro. You have improved so much with the fly rod. From the thrashing it about.
When you think you are loading the rod. You need to pause an extra second- 2 seconds.
What your cast at 15:15,
You need to stop the back cast between 11-12 on a clock position. This will allow the line to flex the rod . Hope this helps 🎣
watched the whole video cuz its always fun to learn about fishing :)
Good attempt at explaining, it's hard to explain but I get it! 🤸
Beach fly fishing is THE most difficult type of fly fishing. Come down this summer and sight cast to Corbina and Spotfin Crocker. One tip, fish A LOT SHALLOWER then you think. Where you were standing is where the perch most likely were at - they feed in crazy shallow water.
That was great! I’ve seen a few people that do this and do well. Great vids!
Nice video man big fan hope surgery goes well
Well done! Not making fishing easy, but looks fun. Stripers on the fly next!
Sick! I love seeing obscure fishing
This is awesome!
Beautiful drone footage !
Been fly fishing for 2 year now and I can say learning this never ends and it’s EXPENSIVE AF
the most expensive part is the gas taking trips to remote mountain streams etc.
Good and informative...instructional!!!
I seen my alert I click I'm here thanks for sharing Matts
Awesome video. My cat sat down on my key board and pulled this video up. She's got great on youtubers or she might to try Surf Perch
Man's getting fish on a fly rod when I can't even get some on spinning lmao🤣
Looks like a great day to be fishing!
A short straight piece of mono or fluorocarbon also works in the surf!
Packaged leaders like that include the tippet on the end… you’d only add tippet after you trim the included tippet section back after changing flies or to lengthen your leader with a thinner or less lbs. test tippet.
Definitely gonna try this
Hope all goes well with the surgery! 🤙🏽👊🏽
All summer down here in southern California im usually casting in and just to the other side of the trough right up at the beach. Corbina, perch, croakers, and even the occasional hali can be right in there.
You explain loading up the rug perfectly
Loving those wide camera shots
Cool you had success! I have tried saltwater flyfishing a number of times, but never really put much effort into it. Few casts here and there off the jetty, in the surf, and once tried pitching streamers for Coho at Bouy 10.
Never caught a damn thing. LOL
Kinda frustrating considering I can catch trout and steelhead with regularity on the fly. Like most things, I probably just have to try harder.
ima cop me a camo jacket for sure also need to restock my jiggy jigs for this season rock bangin!
Looks like a beautiful place to fish.
We usually use our Spey set ups to do this. 13 foot rods to get out and over the waves.
Maybe I'll have to learn that next
Damm my man take care of your self bro you and more than fishing are my main fishing guys hope all goes well with the hip. 💯👍👍
Good luck on the surgery matt!
Come down to Socal when the corbina are biting in summer. They will munch on those sand crab flies. I would drill some bigger holes in your stripping basket in case you get swamped, it will drain much faster.
Nice video! did the wind affect the casting ability of the fly rod? what was the distance of the cast? very informative, thanks for sharing!
Great to see this, Matt.
If you've got a PO Box, let me know and I'll send you some of my shrimp flies. They're killers for salmon and sea trout, but they work for anything that targets shrimp/prawns.
Hey Stephen 👋. Where are you located? Interested in your shrimp flies.
Tight lines.
Hey Mats. My buddy who is a salmon guide told me never wear jeans inside waders. He said the denim is kind of abrasive on the waterproof lining inside. I don’t have any science to back that up but I stopped wearing jeans underneath and my waders seem to be lasting much longer.
I HEARD THE HAIKYUU OST AT 10:38 I was calling enjoying the video and it just hit me 😂
We usually use our Spey setups to do this. 13’3” rods to get above the waves and get distance.
Fly fishing tip. When assembling your rod, start from the top and work your way down. Not from the bottom to to top.
Good little tip! I like it!
Why's that?
@@iflanzy When assembling from the bottom you're constantly having to balance the weight of the bottom of the rod with a flexible mid shaft or stick it into the dirt/sand to hold it still. Assembling from the top down keeps the fragile tip in the air and keeps the rod out of the dirt/sand.
@@areess6209 While I've never put my rod together on a beach, I have a 9' 5wt and I don't see the helpfulness of doing what you're talking about. The rod is going to get wet anyways and when fishing, you're most likely resting your rod against the tree or on the ground at some point anyways. It's also very simple to always have the tip in the air by starting the assembly with the handle piece...by just putting a section on at a time normally.
@@iflanzy Water. Sure. I'm talking about dirt and sand possible getting into the reel when you put it on the ground. My reel isn't separate from the rod when I out it together. So I start at the top and work my way down. That way nothing is getting dragged in the dirt.
I just lost my dad to cancer, and watching your videos keeps me through it all. Watched and rewatched all your stuff.
If your in Alaska I hope I catch you on the same river. Maybe we could exchange some tips. Easy landing bro.
Really sorry to hear that bro. Cancer sucks 😞 stay strong brotha
Loved watching this I do the same in wales Uk for bass
Now you've gone and done it. You'll be hooked for life on fly fishing.
