NT Land Based Fly Fishing - Dundee Beach Day 1

- On a recent trip to the Northern Territory of Australia I stayed for a few days at Dundee Beach, a couple of hours out of Darwin. I wasn't sure what to expect in the way of land based fly fishing opportunities but I was pleasantly surprised!
This is day 1 of a several day stop here so there is much more to come........

Thanks mate! Yes the tropical storms up there were pretty spectacular, I met a guy on the beach there who was a photographer and he set up his camera every afternoon and took photos of the storms out at sea, they were amazing! :)

The northern coast of Australia looks so wild and uninhabited; I would love to travel up there someday. Did you have to worry about saltwater crocs while on that beach?
It is an amazing part of the world! Yes there are crocs there and I was keeping an eye out. The main reason I was trying to keep completely out of the water was the "stingers" though - box jellyfish or irukandji which can be very very nasty if they get wrapped around you. They were still in season at the time. :)
@@PeachyFlyFishing I have heard of the box jellyfish--so many different insects/animals ect that can kill you in Australia. That would be nightmarish though, to have a 15' croc come out of the waves to chase you on the beach!
Haha, yes indeed! Look it's fine as long as you exercise some common sense. I'm no expert on the NT, but as I see it the main thing with the crocs is don't wade in the water anywhere that you can't see the bottom for a good distance around you, stay away from dirty water, deep water and drop-offs. You're pretty unlikely to get into croc trouble if you're only venturing in shallow water briefly. The stingers are very hard to see in the water though, so in stinger season just stay out of the water altogether.....
Most people in the NT would call that a brassy. Those that don't know call them GT's. Much more slender then a GT as well as other differences, looks like fun! You need to get on those milkies near larrakeyah !
Thanks mate! Yes a few people have let me know that it's not a Golden at least, clearly my trevally identification skills need some work, haha! Would love to catch some milkies! ;)
@@PeachyFlyFishing yeah almost everyone up north calls them brassies but alot of people believe they're an unnamed species of trevally that looks similar to brassy and GTs which is the fish we get up north! take a look at this mate m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=325016169018033&id=100045289579414
Yes funnily enough I've been having that exact discussion with Starlo, seems it could possibly be a new species of some kind......;)
Why keep naming spots?
G'day Issac, I always think about it before I name spots depending on where they are, how well known, how susceptible to fishing pressure, and whether the local economy stands to benefit from fishing related tourism. This spot has miles of accessible beach and headlands and is generally well known to all the local Darwin fishos I think. Is there a particular reason you think I shouldn't name this spot? If I've made an error of judgement and given away a spot that I shouldn't have then my apologies mate. :)
@@PeachyFlyFishingJust as i thought YOUR assumptions. Sounds like you would need a Royal Commission with that reasoning. Maybe you should discuss with the First Nations peoples or the locals first.
