These are the vids that put a smile on my face
Thanks mate! 😃
how do you attach your fly line to your leader
Hi mate, I tie the butt section of the leader directly onto the fly line loop with a 3 turn clinch knot. :)
Gday Peachy, I’ve just returned from a trip to The eucumbene river… I watched this video a week before I went and took my Euro rig instead of the usual dry fly setup. It paid off. I caught fish in some runs I wouldn’t have fished otherwise. Love your videos mate. As an amateur angler and aspiring fly fisherman it’s great to have someone who’s been in the tournament world with experience who’s also just as happy to be on the river for fun. Thankyou for sharing your wisdom.!
That’s awesome mate, glad the videos have been helpful! 👍 Good to hear that the Euc is starting to produce a few fish again too. :)
Wow! So much to learn, so little time!
Thanks! Yes I feel that way too! 😃
A great series Steve, much appreciated Thank you.
Thanks mate! :)
Nice one mate!! Your PB on fly?
Thanks bud! Yeah that's my PB, 45 FL.... :)
Why do Aussies use such long leaders? I live in Pennsylvania USA, and a 7.5’-9’ leader is perfectly suited for dry flies here. Are the trout pickier down under?
Hi mate and welcome! You know I haven't fished in the US, but I have heard anecdotally that the trout over there are much more abundant and easier to catch, of course it's probably a gross generalisation! I come from a competition fishing background where very long dry fly leaders are universally accepted as being more effective for trout. I would definitely say that they make a big difference over here in Australia, partly because of not spooking trout with the fly line, but mainly because of the better drag free drift that you can achieve. There are particular slack line presentations that require long leaders, but you know for other species over here like bass I definitely use a much shorter, stiffer leader as they are better suited to that style of casting and fishing. I did another video on slack line presentation with long leaders here, maybe it will explain things a little better. Thanks for watching! : ua-cam.com/video/9XXitwFqSwU/v-deo.html
Loving these master-classes Steve. Excellent!
Thanks mate! I need to give you a call to pick your brains about the Lynx....
Really enjoy and benefit from these videos. Thanks, Peachy!
Thanks Jeffrey, that’s great! :)
Well filmed. Great context as usual
Thanks, glad you liked it! :)
Good stuff Steve. Guess I'll just have to keep getting out to practise! Thanks for the homework. 🙂Cheers PP
Haha, thanks mate! We must get out for a fish again soon. :)
@@PeachyFlyFishing Sounds great Mr. P. Rain in the forecast, and fish do love water ... 😀
Thanks for your videos i have just got back into Flyfishing after fory years and have found it really different to the old days . The gear is better and techniques especially Euro Nymphing has been a game changer and the two fly setup with a dry and a nymph is a real blinder. Unfortunately where i fish in the north east the cormerans have had a field day so the fish are few and far. Look forward to more helpfull tips . Cheers Rob 😊
Thanks Rob! Yes the cormorants have definitely had an impact in a lot of places, hopefully things will improve a bit once they have moved on. Cheers, Peachy. :)
Nice Peachy.
Cheers Jonny! How are things out your way mate?
@ Some good rainfalls have meant water temps are coming down, and flows up…. Got my fist fish for 2025 on Wednesday: not for lack of trying. Was looking good last night. Most fish I’ve seen eating off the top in months, but only late evenings: Hopefully things keep improving.
Enjoyed this Steve. Good simple demonstration. Always learning!
Thanks Bill! Glad it was helpful mate! :)
Some good advice Steve thanks for posting
Ah cheers Pete, thanks mate! :)

How can you cast with a backpack on. Surely you can take it off leave it on the edge and walk up and down the bank with ease of casting
That is what I generally do these days. Thanks for watching. :)
Been swimming here before, seen a few snakes about these holes, the waterfall at the end of the trail is beautiful
Yeah there’s heaps of snakes all through the snowies, particularly copperheads…

I think that there was some very good stuff here but it was too hard to see what he was doing.
Thanks, yeah I found it hard to get the line to show up, I should get one of those orange practice lines. :)
I know that it's a challenge to provide a field of view that is as large as it needs to be and still show the detail that you are demonstrating. I was frustrated but I do appreciate your efforts. Besides line color, rod color and shirt color could be considered. A helpful background may be hard to come by but may be worth seeking. I look forward to seeing more from you.
@dougfett9842 thanks!

Great video - as usual. Keep it up.
Thank you! :)
Peachy, do you prefer a DT or WF when using long leaders?
Hi mate, I use a WF, to be honest I haven’t really experimented with DTs as they are not that common any more over here, they do look like useful lines though. :)
Oh I should have added, I do use single handed spey lines sometimes which have some of the same benefits of DT's, allowing spey casts etc because the weight is further towards the back of the head. Those are fun!
I’ve been fly fishing for 60 years. Can cast 80 feet or curves with either hand. He breaks his wrist too much and those loops are too tight. He’s going to get tailing loops and wind knots constantly. Apologies.
Hi mate, thanks for your comment. What I'm trying to demonstrate here is a particular casting style that requires tight loops to place the fly accurately, as the leader is deliberately not straightening out. You can't place the fly accurately, with slack, without a tight loop. As you suggested if you push the power and line speed too far you will get tailing loops, but I'm trying to push up to that limit without hitting the point of failure, if that makes sense. I rarely get tailing loops or wind knots. I am using using my wrist a little more in this style of casting with less arm movement while also keeping a tight casting arc, in order to cast off either side of the body accurately, but that's not how I cast all the time in all situations. If I want to cast further of course I open up my casting stroke and loops more. I wouldn't cast this way with a nymph under dry rig for example, it's too risky with a multi fly rig and the droppers kick around too much in the air. In loch style competition fishing we use 10 foot rods, 20 foot leaders with 2 or 3 flies on droppers. A typical cast (seated in the boat) is between 60-80 feet - throw loops that are too tight on that rig and you'll have a big birds nest in no time. The point is, there are different styles of casts that are required for different types of fishing, and it's important to have control over the size of your loop - wide when needed, tight when needed. I can throw a full fly line well into the backing as well, but that's not really the point, it's a different style of casting for a different situation. Hope that makes sense, thanks for watching!
@@jamessipes122 @PeachyFlyFishing Your right. I get it. And you’re right about drag too. I’ll try your advice if the ice age here in Pa ever recedes. Have you heard about George Harvey and his leaders designs to reduce drag? Used them successfully here on our limestone streams here like the Letort and Falling Springs, where the trout can tell drag before you park the car. Drives ya nuts.
Great info. Thanks!
No problem! :)
How do you attach the leader to your fly line? It looks like it is a tied connection rather than loop to loop.
Yes that’s right, I just tie the butt section of the leader directly on to the fly line loop using a 3 turn clinch knot. :)
Great video mate ! I Use Lochsa as well , great product
Thanks Shane! Yeah I must give it a try. :)
Another really useful video thanks Steve.
Thanks David! Happy New Year mate, here's to a great 2025! :)
Thanks, love the rubber-band trick!
You’re most welcome!
Excellent video. I disagree with using desiccant on CDC because you’re stripping away the oil that helps it float. Apply some Loon Lochsa before fishing and it should keep floating after multiple fish. I still rinse and dry with a rubber band, or better yet one of my wife’s elasticated hair ties! They don’t break down as fast as rubber bands. Tight lines.
Thanks, that’s a great tip, I will give the Loon Lochsa a try! :)
Been using fly dip for about 12 months. Very effective on cdc…a little fidly/messy!
Yeah I like fly dip too, works well!
On your leader system , can you make one and show it on video cause I believe that the butt section of a 5x it’s too thick and stiff for a 3 weight line tip. Or is it ok to have a little thicker butt section leader than your 3 weight line tip? Thanks 🙏🤔
Hi! Yes some people like to cut off part of the butt section, personally I haven’t found it necessary with the leaders I use. If you have a look in my newest video on keeping your fly afloat, there is a closeup shot showing the join between the line and the leader, perhaps that will show you the relative thickness? Thanks for watching! :)
Great video. I've been fly fishing over a decade and never thought to grease my line. Curious if it's a regional habit? Very thorough presentation; well done! ☮ from North Idaho.
Thanks! I’m not sure whether it is a regional habit or not, maybe? Anyway I hope it makes a difference for you. Tight lines! :)
Great vid Steve 👍
Thanks mate! :)
Love #5….just a cool way to fish!
Thanks mate! Yeah it can be surprisingly effective too. :)
@ the water on the Fish ( local R) is the best I’ve seen it this past week. Clean, gin clear. Unfortunately those black commorants are still on patrol…..and dry fly opportunities appear very limited. Quick evening rises mostly. Put the dry fly rod away after a fruitless session….and did very well EN on Boxing Day. Heading to vic tmoz…Kiewa, Ovens, Howqua, Golbourn…hopefully will see more opportunities on the dry! Tight lines!
Have fun mate! Yeah getting too warm in the central west now for trout I would think, evening rise would be the best. Hope Vic is good!
Informative and superb explained! Thank you! 😃
Thanks!
Thank you! Wonderful very informative video.
Thanks! :)
Hi, do you have a video on how to make this cast
Hi, yes it's in the linked video. Here's the link again: ua-cam.com/video/9XXitwFqSwU/v-deo.html
I really love your video.. It's very calming, and i can learn more about how to fly fishing
Thanks! Glad you liked it! :)
Learned a ton !!
That’s great! Thanks for watching. :)
Great video what distance did you cover in the day?
Thanks mate! I’m not sure on the exact distance, but we launched just below the dam and finished at the old caravan park up above town if that helps. As the river was fairly low we probably didn’t cover as much as you would if it was high and pumping.
@@PeachyFlyFishing thanks for the reply I’ve just brought a new canoe and keen to explore the snowy area.
Good stuff! A word of caution though, the Tumut runs very fast when it’s up and is potentially dangerous for the inexperienced - I would strongly advise that you stop in at Tom’s Outdoors or call Angus at Haul Fly Fishing to get some advice on river conditions and safety. Have fun, hope you catch a few! :)
@ thanks I’ve had a couple of chats with the guys at Tom’s Outdoors already about the situation down there I’m also looking for some pressure waves 🌊 in the area
I’d say it’s a side arm roll cast not really anything new .
The snake roll has been around for a long time as a Spey cast, so no I’m not saying it’s something new, but it’s incredibly useful. It’s an extension of the roll cast, a normal roll cast is along the line the fly is already in, whereas a snake roll is a change of direction cast for repositioning the “train tracks” or the direction of the anchor. :)
Enjoying these….It’s such an awesome thing…can watch good fly casters and these sort of techniques for hours! Myself… I specialise in the out of whack hoop snake roll, a python pile cast and over extended anaconda!!!! Merry Christmas Peachy, may the trout gods smile on you.
Haha! Thanks mate, I’ll have to check out those casts of yours some time! 😂 Merry Christmas!
This is a great video, Mr P. Love it. Snake roll pick up & the SP Flick, got it. Just need to check my medical cover and buy a helmet. 😂 Always so much to work on. People are going to wonder why this bloke is watching videos on his phone on the river. Nice spot, too. Cheers PP
Haha! Love it PP, thanks mate! 😆
