    You're pretty much right about everything. George wasn't telling jokes this time around, he's had heart trouble most of his life. He'd gone thru 3-4 heart attacks by this point and you can tell by comparing him in this video to others that he wasn't doing too good here. This was his last HBO special and in my opinion I think he knew he didn't have much time left so he kept the joking to a minimum and just went out and said everything he felt he needed to say. Within a few months of the special airing he was gone. RIP my friend, we miss you George.

The irony of the statement is children are put into preschool for a head start on education only to be held back by lowering the standards of the curriculum so the dumb kids can pass. Why would any child need a head start if you're going to teach to the level of the dumbest kids? The reality is the government just wants to control you from cradle to grave.

    I am a teacher, so I can tell you that what George says is completely accurate. And the major problem with education, not only in the US but in many places, is that the educational system, in general, is designed to kill creativity and imagination, which with a few exceptions, it really accomplishes. Real education is much simpler than everybody imagines, and at the very beginning, it consists only in letting children be children and discover the world around them by themselves, with teachers as facilitators. Education, in that sense, must teach children HOW to think, not WHAT to think. All that is taught in the twelve or so years that children spend in school could be taught in one year, when they're starting to decide what they want to pursuit as a profession, that's it! The rest is a waste of time and has the purpose of controlling and taming by killing critical thinking, nothing more.

    • @Nowhy
      @Nowhy Рік тому +3

      Just don't forget that true critical thinking abilities start to develop around age 12. However, a 6 year old child can understand any good (complete) explanation, as long as it doesn't go into metaphors and topics that require the ability to differentiate between different categories - critical thinking.

    • @mlaruex
      @mlaruex Рік тому +3

      I would say "jein" to that (yes and no). Schools are basicaly not designed to kill creativity and imagination. The first "function" of a school is to take custody of kids, so their parents can go to work. The second "function" of a school is selection (hand out certificates). Because of this, schools kill the joy about learning, and thus creativity and imagination. Also never forget, each kid is individual and you (the schools, the teacher) can not educate them individualy, its impossible. Some, long, time ago, there were more teachers and the classes were smaler and it worked to some degree, it was, and should be, more about how to think rather then what to think, but those times are long gone.

      @@NowhyI strongly disagree with the notion that critical thinking starts at 12, it starts much sooner around 4-5 years of age, it depends on the parents and how stimulating the environment is.
      And I don't need any studies or statistics to prove it, I remember from my own experiences and memories from when I was of that age.
      Children in many ways are more profound and are capable of asking existential questions than most adults; if most adults do that then the entire world world would transform.

    • @Nowhy
      @Nowhy 9 місяців тому

      @@nexuscross3233 we have a misunderstanding.. I mean essential critical thinking, not thinking about mechanical/logical stuff. A 6 year old child can understand a complex motor, when the explanation is good and/or the communication from a teacher or source is competent, but when it comes to metaphors and the metaphysical/symbolic, a certain change relating to puperty has to take place - before that, a child cannot essentially choose who it want to be for instance (no true personality). Most people nowadays are just like 12 year olds intellectually/emotionaly speaking, lacking personality and their own ethics that they choose (wanting to go back to childhood, without responsibility or guilt, depending on mom and dad, or if they believe in it as good, the state) - this choosing cannot be taught or the person wouldn't made free through their decisions...
      Sadly, many people are way to sensible for their own good - but hey, there is also humor in that (which again is developed very basic for most).

I wasn't surprised when I saw a chart showing how over the last three decades the amount of money going to schools has gone up in proportion to how much grades/test scores have gone down. I watched my son and grand kids going through school and none of them were challenged in school. For two of them it was to easy and they got bored and stopped trying, then barely passed. I feel for the students in school now, low discipline, lower standards and the three basics are for the most part skipped over.

I couldn't understand things we're learning as easily and as far as the state was concerned I was an idiot. And to be fair I am likely an idiot in some regards. But I learned what I wanted to learn and I can possibly use that information. The school system in my opinion is very broken. The public school system wasn't designed for males. Males require a different style of education than females. I was a poor student even though I was extremely creative. When I changed how I learned, regardless of what the teachers told me, I improved. I stopped participating in discussions and doing homework. I learned proper note taking, did ALL my work in class, and practically napped or read novels for the rest of the class time. I stopped listening to the teachers speeches because most of it was either useless or was already in my notes. My scores went from D's and F's to mostly A's. I graduated with a 3.88 gpa.
      This method helped me graduate as salutarian in my Corrections Officer class for the Regional Jail system where I also earned college credits.
      Males require simplicity, practicality, efficiency, discipline, and clear goals. Public schools don't provide this.

    What's crazy is that we are still using the same teaching methods we were using in the 1950s. Rote learning is a perfect description. Forcing these kids to memorize and regurgitate (mostly) useless facts that they will quickly forget. The difference is that this method was not nearly as harmful back then. A boy could finish high school and immediately secure a job in a factory that would afford him the ability to not only support himself, but a stay at home wife and several children. That America does not exist anymore. It hasn't for decades. All those jobs were shipped overseas and replaced by trash like WalMart, fast food, etc, jobs", wage slavery.
    What we should be teaching in schools are things like money management (an obscene number of Americans are financially illiterate and have no financial self control) and critical thinking skills- logic, reason, how to construct a syllogism, or a sound, valid argument, how to spot fallacies, how to evaluate truth claims and what constitutes a reasonable standard of evidence.The Socratic teaching method should be introduced in all high schools. I didn't truly learn critical thought until I hit college. Which is sad and ridiculous.

    Great erudite commentary. I forgot how George Carlin was so unique in his social and wide-scale perspectives. From an Australian view, it is heartening to know that there are real Americans with soundly developed, academically formed views, who wisely, yet simple, say how it is.

  • @GyzelE
    @GyzelE Рік тому +6

    Carlin developed his voice in the post-Vietnam hippie era, where skepticism towards the deeds of the government was becoming a standard for many critical-thinking Americans. As he aged and the Internet was becoming more popular, pop culture exploded and became far more corporate.
    I explain this to make the point that much of the comedic aspect of George's later material is that basic critical thinking abilities had declined to the extent where people just regurgitate talking points and consume vain, pointless culture, just accepting everything at face value. The comedy is that he talks about things that should be common sense, but people began to prefer having their perspectives already articulated for them.
    He's not angry at people, he's disappointed that everything is taken at face value when it should be questioned. However, the skeptical voice tends to be silenced/obsfugated.

Unfortunately, most of the classes were just memorizing. No real thought requires, if you can read and write and memorize, you can pass just fine, and even as a teen I was starting to see the cracks in this society and school was what bothered me the most back then. I actually like learning, and most of the classes were just so damn boring. I wondered why adults thought that these "slacker" kids and failing students would take an interest when I could barely do so. I could tell right away these kids weren't stupid, but a lot of the teachers treated them that way. From what I hear, not much has changed. (I was in high school during mid 2000s)

    Yeah when I joined the military as an enlisted and started interacting with officers, I learned that a higher education does not always equate to applicable smarts. And most geopolitical wars are always started by the educated, so much for learning history.

    What you said at the end of this video is something that was addressed in the movie Se7en. It was a scene where a character was in a library at night to do research, and he sees security guards sitting together and he says something along the lines of "you spend every day around all the knowledge of the world, and sit up all night playing cards". (That's not an exact quote, but it's been many years since I saw that movie.)
    In today's age, we could talk about how people could spend time educating themselves. We have the internet. We have resources. Yet, all most people do in their time is put their heads under the rock called "Social Media". Rather than be productive and read something new and learn, they choose to surf Facebook and Instagram and Twitter and get into arguments as pseudo-intellectuals, subjects ripe to prove the Dunning-Kruger effect to be true. (BTW, I do know that I personally know very little about D-K; I did that sentence as a bit of humorous irony of trying to exemplify one of those pseudo-intellectuals. I realize tone/inflection doesn't come across the internet, sadly...)
    Definitely enjoy your reactions to Carlin and I love your analysis! Nobody in today's world matches Carlin because of fear of "cancellation" from Twitter; only Chappelle comes close to the level of social commentary and thought provocation that Carlin did.

    Some of his bits on religion will make you really think about what you believe in. He was raised Catholic until he reached what he calls ”the age of reason” so he primarily has their perspective. I have been raised in church my whole life but he can really make you question what you truly believe.

    When I was in sixth grade, in the 1960s, there was a teacher who taught me two of the, I feel, most important lessons in life. Figures don't lie but liars figure and not believe everything I read or see on TV. I was not the best academic student and maybe I'm naturally suspicious, but I think she was instrumental in my becoming an analytical critical thinker. I have the impression that in those days they spent more time teaching us how instead of what to think.

So most of their courses are free... I would highly recommend them as well.

    I always found it hard to classify Carlin as a comedian. He is funny alright but his topics aren't just about laughter, he deals with serious issues quite seriously with a sprinkle of humour here and there. The comedy is incidental in his presentations. He is not telling jokes, he is conscientising his audience.

    It's been a few days since I discovered your channel and I have to say it's easily becoming one of my favourite. Critical thinking and experimenting different ideas, maybe challenging ones is such a healthy thing we should all do to hope build a better society, and it is sad to say that your channel is sadly only an oasis in what seems like a big desert of culture and curiosity.
    Once again your take on this video and the related topics is on point, and on par with what I've been thinking since high school. I'd love to have someone like you to talk to/debate about such topics and other philosophical ones. I could spend nights talking about these stuff and "remake the world", as we say in french.
    Anyway, I'll follow this channel with great interest. Keep up the good work! Have a nice one!

    The education is definitely worse in the United States. I had exchange students stay at my home over two school years. One from France, the other from Germany. It was astonishing to me how much they knew about our political system and their command of the English language. They asked me a lot of questions about American history which i was embarrassed to admit I didn’t know. They knew more about America than Americans do. Those experiences were the jolt I needed to learn more. Yes, George was right. Our education system sucks.

    GREAT Response! We've seen all this play out all across our Country for Decades... We're Marginalizing Exceptional Progress to make the Mediocre/Below Average students feel better about themselves. Instead of Pushing students to Study Harder or Exceed their personal best, we've lowered Societies Expectations, Eliminated the "Failing Grade" and give out Participation Awards. Why Work towards an "A" when you know that no matter what your grade, "you pass"? Why spend hours training when you'll get a Trophy for Showing up? Why Practice an Instrument/Singing when we have Auto-tune? Why learn to spell when we have Auto-correct on Everything AND NOW even have App's that will Write your letters for you?
    Today's Learning has become more about how "the World owes you everything" and less about what YOU can do to better Yourself".

    For a literature reference, I recommend, 'How to Study and Teaching How to Study' (1909) by F. M. McMurry, Professor of Elementary Education, Teachers College, Columbia University. I found it about 10 years ago, but could have used it 50 years ago when I was in school. For some reason the schools are loath to teach students how to study even as they berate them to study.

    I like everything about this lady, especially the fact that she doesn't act as her own shill by telling her viewers to "like, subscribe and ring the notification bell" before her video even starts. In most other UA-cam videos one sees this, but I can't understand why anyone would "like" or "subscribe" to anything they haven't even watched yet. By the way, I have watched many of her videos and have always given her the "thumbs up" that she has never asked for.
