Just be careful mate ... my brother was massive ..then lost 35kg ... approx 77lbs looked great for 2 years now is bigger than ever. His issue was portion control he never solved that when thin he was just on some sort of diet .. Atkins ? I think. It dropps the weight but doesnt adress the root cause.
Im glad you shed the weight but now work on the underlying causes and keep it off. The ppl you love will thank you for it.

I absolutely agree, I think why some struggle to exercise regularly is because they haven't yet found something they actually enjoy doing. Some people can't imagine exercise to be fun and give up too early before exploring everything that's out there.

I just found your channel and, after watching a few of your uploads, I felt compelled to subscribe and comment. I just wanted to say that I find it very refreshing that you engage your audience in a dialogue of critical thought rather than theatrics as so many reaction channels do. Don’t get me wrong, depending on the person, theatrics can be very entertaining. However, I don’t get the sense that they’re really thinking about what they’re viewing as much as they are putting on a performance for the people viewing them. Does that make sense? Anyway, you have a new fan. I’m not going to suggest things for you to watch and critique as I would rather discover new things along with you. Keep up the good work

I also lost 50 lbs (went from 280 to 230) in 2 or 3 months. It was a combination of low carb (atkins/keto), smaller meals (sometimes 2 if I wasn't hungry at night), and a lot of exercise. I literally enrolled in UFC fighter, Derek Brunson's MMA gym. I do an hour of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, an hour of kickboxing, and just started the Cardio Kickboxing, so 2-3 hours of exercise from Monday through Thursday, and also lift weights 5 days a week. I was typically losing 5 lbs a week up until I got to 225 (I'm 6'2" with wide shoulders and big bones, so 225 lbs is already a flat stomach and seeing my abs). Now it is about 3-4 lbs a week.
Anyhow, I am always floored when people make excuses for not losing weight. It isn't hard if you are serious, and if doctors were honest with fatties about the horrible life-altering diseases they can get and their life expectancy, they would have more of a reason to try to lose weight.

As a child in the 60's, I recall going to McDonalds and the average meal was a hamburger (the small one on today's menu), fries (again the 'small' by today's meal standard), and a drink (maybe 12 oz). When the Big Mac came out, we were amazed by the size of it. My parents would share one because it was so large to us (no, we weren't poor either). Same with the 7/11 Big Gulp. When that came out my friends and thought it was ridiculous - 'who can drink so much pop' we thought...

.I've been very overweight for most of my life. A few years ago in 2019, I reached a peak of over 405 pounds. Then, I finally decided to do something about it. I stopped eating as often and tried to only eat once or twice a day. I never went to the gym and I didn't count calories or eat "healthy food" or control portion size. The only exercise I got was from walking and having a physically demanding job. By 2021 I was down to 215 pounds. Since then, my weight has gone up and down and now I am around 265 pounds, so I am still overweight. I am tall, but I should probably weigh less than 200 pounds. Even so, I feel better physically and mentally than I have in decades (most of the time) and weigh less than I did 20 years ago. I'm 42 now, and look forward to eventually being at a healthy weight.

About the Nike ad. Nike (Νίκη in greek) means victory, or the goddess of it too. I like Nike's motto too (Just do it). Yes it is a great ad campaign but it does motivate people simply as that. I loved the gym that I was going to because of a board on the wall having clearly written rules about not staring OR saying dumb idiotic things to out of shape people that are trying their best.
That gym has an honest positive climate amongst people trying to get or stay fit. Everyone would be respectful to one another and help each other with exercises and weight lifting without necessarily being aquainted. That made each one of us appreciate and respect the effort that people put into staying healthy. Plus it is WAY more fun when everyone is happy and smiling while sweaty lol.

Biologist here. It’s not just because we eat too much and don’t exercise as much. That is a factor, but mostly we don’t eat enough of the right types of protein, which ruins satiety, we eat too many processed oils, grains and sugar, and we have high heavy metal and environmental toxicity exposure, as well as mineral deficiencies from depleted soils. All of these contribute to satiety disregulation, damaged metabolism and overal metabolic health, gut lining integrity, inflammation of pretty much every organ, including the brain, etc. I had to work on all of these factors to get my health and my weight right. It varies from person to person, but I have now helped dozens of people ranging from mild issues to some of the most severe cases using this approach, which is designed to adapt to individual cases. We may all be different to a degree, but within limited ranges, being that we’re all human.

I was always overweight in my life. It was never so bad that I couldn't go hiking in the mountains or couldn't ride my bike anymore, but it has always been there. Before the big pandemic broke out, I had a phase of actually putting effort into getting stronger and eating more healthy and my body and mind both felt a lot better. Unfortunately, with the gym closing during the pandemic and other private issues happening at the same time, I dropped all of these things and went back to my old lazy habits. Fast forward a few months, I was writing my master's thesis and my body was hating me for it. The stress made me bloat up everytime I ate something, and acid was getting so bad that I couldn't really go to bed without taking anti-acid pills. During that time my girlfriend basically told me that I look like I've gotten fatter, to which my initial reaction was being angry. But after just a few minutes I changed my mind and thought "No, she is actually right". I thanked her for telling me, because I know she didn't say it to insult me. Now, a couple of weeks ago I finally found the strength and motivation again to excercise more and go on a diet plan, and I am already feeling like progress is happening.
The biggest lie I told myself was that "I can drink some sugary drinks, it is only 200 calories a day" and "I am not even eating that much / that unhealthy". If you don't actively pay attention to what you consume, you EASILY eat over your required calories, specially if you like sweet drinks or the occasional snack.
Now that I started counting calories and paying attention to what I eat, I can eat until I'm full and still not have excess calories. Just by not drinking sugary drinks anymore, I save 200-300 calories a day. Just by eating a bit more healthy, I can feel full, but not bloated and tired after eating.
Being overweight doesn't make you a bad person, but I think telling ourselves that we shouldn't do anything against being overweight because some people are too lazy to try is dangerous. That is like telling people to keep drinking too much alcohol because I can't be bothered to quit my own drinking. Everyone would tell you "That's stupid", but for some reason when it comes to our visible bodies it is suddenly a thing of "acceptance"
My journey just started, so I am far from done. But I hope that I can go all the way this time.

So yeah the main thing here is there's a difference between body positivity and fitness. Someone who is morbidly obese and wildly out of shape may or may not be body positive just as someone who is in amazing shape may or may not be body positive.
People often have an unhealthy view of themselves when they perceive that they don't measure up to some external measure of physical beauty and everyone is susceptible to this.
So while it's totally cool to be body positive regardless of your physique, it's also totally cool to make fitness a priority and fitness has a gigantic amount of add on bonus effects.

As technology bursts ahead, the physical demands of our everyday lives become less and less. Kids don't play outside anymore, but rather stay in to play video games or chat online with friends. This creates a lifestyle that continues on into adulthood.

There was a movement in the 60’s by the government and most people pushed this too and this is why people stayed thinner. Also as they are proving now, our food caused over 95% of these “underlying factors.” We are then using those ailments as crutches, instead of lowering our consumption.. Remember that 100lbs of fat can feed you for a year

So far, at least anecdotally, I've found that to be true both of myself and of my closest friends. Me telling an overweight friend about my concern isn't hate speech, and I've done it before. Great video.

Bill Maher is awesome with his point of view. He doesn't care if you're left or right, red or blue, democrat or republican. He WILL call you on your BS no matter what. Even if you don't care about his political views, his weekly segment, "New Rules, which is where the clip is from, is amazing every time and very eye-opening. Even if you don't watch his entire show, ANY of these "New Rules" segments are definitely worth watching.

I can thankfully now and then have a doughnut and I'm pretty pedestrian, a raise glaze or a cinnamon roll. The roll at my local bakery is unique because it is made of the left over trimmings of Portuguese bread dough, nice.

I'm little late on this, but do you know that the country I'm from, France, had the largest intake in animal grease, or to be not so polite, lard? But the lowest on sugar? And it had the lowest proportion of heart failures of all European countries?
Sugar is killing us. You can drink a liter of olive oil a day, and as much animal fats as you like, and then you exercise. Farmers here used to eat a whole wheat "baguette" at breakfast, covered in what we call "rillette", then went to work on the farm. And they happily lived to 90, at least until the pesticides killed them.
    Enough said, my dear.

A while back there was a brand of donuts named Dutch Mill. They were found in supermarkets and specialty stores, and came in a blue box (8 to a box). They were dangerous: plain, glazed, powdered, chocolate, they were all good. I haven't found them for years now. That is a good thing. Also, I haven't had chips (potato or tortilla) since mid-July 2022. Working on cutting back sugar more now, starting with not ordering cakes and other desserts from catalogs; I live alone, so why do I need a 3-pound coffee cake in the apartment? I lost 10 pounds of muscle due to COVID in 2020, and am actually fatter now, all of it around the middle, while weighing less than before as work schedule, various injuries and other factors have derailed my workouts. The workouts are my next frontier.

What a lot of people, Bill included, forget when discussing this topic is that food today lacks the nutrients they used to have, so people eat more to try and get the same nutrients less food provided 50 years ago. And yes, nutrient-rich foods cost a lot more today than the cheap ones that lack nutrients. Also, stressing people out by constantly harping on their weight will not help them lose weight (or gain for the skinny people out there getting harassed).
Being kind is actually the right way to go here if you want people you love to lose weight. People trying to adjust their weight in either direction need to be encouraged to be happy at whatever weight they are at so they're not stressed out, which will help them gain/lose weight. They already know they need to do it. Other people can stop reminding them of it constantly. 🙄
Loved your reaction to this topic! I imagine you've gotten the thin harassment more than once in your life. I was harassed all through my youth for being too thin, then when my thyroid died and I gained 100 pounds in a month (without eating any more food), people switched and started harassing me for being overweight. Can't win, and hearing all that nonsense from others doesn't help at all. 🙃

One factor is the amount of fats, sugar and sodium that is in our foods/snacks. I lived in Japan and South Korea for a number of years and adjusted to their diet which is generally lower in sugar and salt. Their Pastries are less sweet and chips less salty. Even their sodas are less sweet. I lost weight just from eating what the locals ate which was mainly fish, rice, and lots of veggies.

There are a lot of differences between the food people eat now and when I was a kid. Everything was homemade when I was a kid. We didn't have sugary cereals, we had puffed rice. Not Rice Krispies. Puffed Rice. It was bland, it was boring, but it was a lot healthier. We, and most of the people we knew had a garden. How many people that you know have a vegetable garden in 2022? We didn't buy prepared lasagna you microwave that's full of sugar and preservatives. We assembled it fresh. Fast food was a treat every once in a while if I got good grades, not a daily routine because you just don't want to have to cook.
People looked different back in the old days because the portion sizes were smaller, there was less sugar in everything, people practiced healthier lifestyles. The obesity problem isn't just a complaceny problem. It's also because the food industry has been able to run amok through our lives. Manipulative ads with bright colors and fun characters. Highly refined sugars that get the hooks in and set up pattern behavior young. Pushing a consume more more more mentality. The fact a 16oz bottle of water cost 1.59 and a 64oz sugary soda is only a buck speaks for itself.

6:26 yes agreed, although advertisement traditionally has been thought to be about selling a fantasy and I think Bill was arguing that unhealthy BMI shouldn't be presented as something to strive for. what he might've missed though is that it all comes down to numbers, it's pretty rare that ads create brand new markets, most of it sells to existing demand. they very likely made studies and found out that markets are now ready to buy the overweight image and if it sells it gets advertised to. quarterly economy is like the Borg from Star Trek, there's no morals, resistance is futile.
