A Man I'll Never Be is my absolute favorite song from Boston. The progression, the melody, the guitar, the bass, the vocals.... It has it all.
But, then, thats BOSTON in a nutshell, right?
Yep it's my fave too.
And it describes me to a tee. 😪
My all time favorite song PERIOD. Thank you Rick, appreciate you!
And the lyrics!
Please, please Tom Scholz. We would love for you and Rick to sit down and chat. Please....🙏🙏🙏🙏
YES!
Yes, this please! I'm sitting here listening to Third Stage and have goosebumps from Tom's guitar tone and the insane production quality that is always there with Boston music.
Tom’s amazing knowledge and ability with music combined with rick’s and rick’s interview ability would make for an amazing video.
😅😂😂
100% agreed.
It's really hard to beat that classic Boston sound! Absolutely timeless... Man, we had the BEST music growing up in the 70's & 80's! 🧡🧡
Long live rock n roll
It’s crazy how good the music in the 70s, 80s and 60s really was. I try to put song lists together and it’s almost impossible to do. I find I’m always thinking about additional songs I can add.
It can’t be beat…
Indeed
I'm grateful that I've grown up AFTER the 70s and 80s happened, so I too could experience it. Even if I didn't get to be there as it happened.
The first 2 Boston albums blew me away in my youth. After all these years, they still amaze me. Absolute brilliance.
the first two, for sure….
how i feel about the third is that Tom had honed his recording chops…guitars, vocals, everything sounded great, its just that the songs weren’t there….I mean, it’s ok, but not on par with the first two, just in terms of compositions
@@florislok yes, the first is clearly stronger in every way. There are a couple good songs on the second album, but it certainly doesn't have the songwriting depth of the first album. Since the first album took 10 yrs and the second was written in less than 2, maybe Tom needed another 8 yrs. :)
@@skipskiperton4992 Yea, I agree. The songwriting depth just wasn't there nearly as much on Third Stage. Personally, I also thought the electronic drums and his use of the rockman guitar tone made the production of album sound somewhat anemic.
@@russwsoper I was not aware that Tom used electronic drums on Thurd Stage…..I’m suprised
People dismiss THIRD STAGE unfairly. "Amanda" was a lovely ballad. "Cool the Engines" is my absolute favorite Boston song ever.
Hitch A Ride from the first Boston album is my favorite Boston song. The guitar solo at the end is phenomenal.
It's one of the most perfect guitar solos ever invented, written, performed, recorded and produced. Everything about it is perfect.
@@davearonow65 when the eponymous album came out, I had it on 8-track. I HATED that, because I kept playing the solo over and over, but I did t have a FF button on the player in the car, so I had to wait through the entire rack every time. 😫
My all-time favorite guitar solo. 2nd place prob "Little Fighter" by the very underrated Vito Bratta
Thats the last song I wanna hear on this earth before I leave for good..
agreed
The sound is amazing too. Crystal clear guitars, Brad Delp has one of the premiere voices in music.
It's hard to get over the death of Brad Delp. What an incredible voice. There will be no other like him.
What's odd to me is that people including Tom, were saying the new singer sounded like Brad. I didn't hear a note of Brad in him.
Amen.
I met him in Boston at a gig he was doing with his Beatles tribute band, he could sound like George John or Paul and switch on a dime, it was three hours of bliss. here's a guy who could be out there playing his own hits and he was just doing what he wanted to. he was super nice. tragic loss when he left the party too early. monumental talent.
What year was this..?
@@MobiusBandwidth very true!
That guitar solo stuns me every time I hear it. Even after all these years. It's incredible
Boston is so good it makes me really sad sometimes. Maybe because I remember what life was like when their songs were new. This was fantastic, Rick.
Yep, exactly!
Exactly !!!!!!! Man when those songs came out I remember crusin around in my mustang with my buddy’s with the Craig Supertuner cranked up. Those were the best of times.
I was born almost 25 years after Boston (the album) released, and I've heard it before, but I recently got it on vinyl, and sitting down and just listening to it was a special experience.
Great post
So many of the very best memories in my entire life!
Tom was a master at building epic sounding and epic feeling songs. The chemistry between the music and Brad's voice created something sublime.
It's funny you said that-their first record label was with Epic Records!
Boston is a complete work of art, their first 2 records are just masterpieces melodically, harmonically, production wise. just works of art
Tom Scholtz absolutely created a true masterpiece. Played, recorded, engineered and produced it by himself along with Brad Delp's brilliant vocals!!!
Never the art of a record was so precise: The first album was a flying saucer landing in the soundscape of the 70s.
I always took it as cities leaving Earth, not aliens.
The saucer is an upside-down guitar, as well as all the other saucers.
Yes ....and i bought the LP and still have those great LP's from the 70's....
@@jeffhiggins8087 I think most people are aware of this by now
The Electric Light Orchestra also had flying saucer art at the same time w/ A New World Record and Out of the Blue albums
Boston's sound was completely fresh upon arrival and still sounds amazing 47 years later. Immediately recognizable, yet impossible to replicate. Sonic perfection. Thank you, Rick! You're the best!
I am so glad I got to see Boston back in 88 for third stage.... most technically perfect quality sound....amazingly good concert
Finally… A Man I’ll Never Be ~ there was nothing as complete as the first Boston album, but this song has captured me for 40+ years now ~ lyrics so moving matched with instrumentation the melts you ~ emotions just can’t be satisfied ~ if only I could find a way…
Thank you Rick!
I absolutely love this song. One of the most beautiful songs ever written including all the musical parts.
Very little melody in songs today...it's all about vocal acrobatics. One can't easily sing along with them when they come on the radio. A melody is what MAKES a song, and makes it memorable.
100% agree -- all of the vocal gymnastics (much of it machine-generated) are an utter turn-off. I remember reading one music writer a few years back saying that today's vocals have pretty much reduced to either "melismatic wailing or Neanderthal grunting." We should be eternally grateful for the exceptions.
@@badgasaurus4211 Actually I blame all the Whitney Houston imitators. Them and Creed.
This music is GENIUS. And far, far beyond anything before or after. Complex and beautiful. As close to perfection as anyone can get.
There has always been very clever and sophisticated music. Take The Beatles and Beachboys for example.
Brad Delps voice shines on this song. What a voice
This song has always been an emotional “goose bumps” song for me. For the way it’s written, as well as the way most of us can relate to the lyric content. Who hasn’t wished they were a better man at times? Such a great song!
Boston is criminally underrated, genius compositions every track you play!
I wouldn’t say under rated. I think most people love this album, and Tom Sholtz was (still is) a genius and a bad ass guitar player. I was disappointed in the long time in between records and the fact that they all sounded basically the same. Even so I bought the records because I wanted more of the same. No big changes from record to record, or evolution in style or performance. Predictably good all the same.
IDK this song if great but has the same vibe as More than a feeling. Their arrangements are similar on other songs aswell. They sounded and played fantastic but only lasted 2 good albums and thats it. Cheers.
Their records sold multi platinum. Hard to call them underrated.
They're overrated. Not on the Zep, Stones, Beatles, Sabbath, Floyd, Hendrix level. Not even one of their songs hits the highest level. They're just good, not great.
@@mdav30 Only Sabbath are good there... lol
When this song comes up on my ipod I hit replay and will listen to it 5 or 10 times in a row. My all time favorite Boston song. And the lyrics can still make me cry after having heard it thousands of times.
Same here!!
I look at it as Production Perfection. Brad (Delp) voice is unmatched, angelic. Beautiful pitch with an insane octave and a flair for a perfect melody. The most underappreciated rock vocalist imo.
Boston are in my top 5 bands ever I’m 21 and discovered Boston for real a couple of years ago. Not many artists or bands can have a whole album with no songs that miss. Almost every Boston song is a masterpiece in my opinion
Off the first three albums, yes.
I love this! 🤘🏼
Kinda like blind melon...2 great albums then its over
Thank you for helping me believe that there is hope for your generation. And that is a damn fine Irish name you have. (The TRY Channel rocks!)
I'm imagining you finding this great album like I did 45 years ago... Welcome to the club. We're you named for Rory Gallagher? He was the real deal.
Just out of high school in 78', orphaned and I had nothing, and was failing in life. This song cut me to pieces every time I listed to it.
Hopefully it brought back some of the good times you had, not just the bad. 🥲
Grad 2 years later. Life hasn't been easy but it has been an adventure beyond what I'd dreamed. Hope the same for you Brother & you found a path to a good life ✌️ All the incredible music gives me a path back to awesome times with awesome friends. 🎶🎸😎👍
It makes me think about just about every girl I've ever dated. They all expect something that's not realistic. Too many damn Disney movies
One of my favorite Boston songs because of the guitar arrangements. A gorgeous song all around and who doesn't miss Brads vocal prowess...amazing
Was 9 in 1978. Huge KISS fan. Mom went to Musicland to get me a record for my birthday, said I liked KISS, what else would I like? She came home with the first 2 Boston albums wrapped. Possibly the best gift ever - I still use them regularly, 45 years later.
And to think for my 11th bday in '78 Mom got me Bat Out Of Hell!👌👍🤘
That's an awesome story- to my knowledge the first real album I ever received as a gift was Boston's first album. It was incredible!
In retrospect, KISS is absolute junk rock compared to Boston, both lyrically and compositionally. The contrast in personalities is strong too. Brad and Tom didn't even party and never tried to showboat themselves or be "rock stars".
When I first bought the cassette of “Don’t Look Back”, I was NOT prepared for the twist at the end of Side One, which is the song you’re discussing: A Man I’ll Never Be. What a left turn that was! I actually found myself bawling by the second verse.
Boston is such a classic, always enjoy chilling to their songs.
Back when this came out the first time I heard this, I was a singer but knew nothing about music. This song made the hair on my arm stand up!!! Just beautiful!!
Perfectly written, perfectly sang. This is actual music, not A.I. data. I miss it.
Great to see that song get its due...Its always been my favorite Boston song, and probably in my top 5 from that era.. just a pure masterpiece in my view..
I loved American rock as a kid. In Ireland. So many memories of the Boston albums. Loved that multilayered sweet harmonied guitar sound. As you would know by my name I guess. I read recently about brads death. I had no idea. Guy was so talented and didn’t seem to have such a great life. 😢
I’m a huge early Boston fan and this is a phenomenal song! Glad to see you give it recognition
crazy. this is my Fav Boston song., when my wife was dying in the ICU I would put this song on loop in the car every time I went back and forth to the hospital, first song I listened to after she passed.
😢❤
I was in 8th grade when that record came out and I wore it out , this record really inspired me to start playing guitar. Still sounds awesome today .
That is one of my all time favorite Boston songs, but of course, what Boston song isn’t great?! Rick, you’re such a great teacher. I have learned so much from you and your channel. Thank you for all your hard work, and great quality videos.
Hear, hear!
Teaching guitar over FaceTime during the pandemic - did wonders for my ear. I had to constantly “picture” and hear where people were playing, even though their camera was falling over, family members hitting it, cats …. Truth.
I love this song. Totally beautiful musically, but also the sentiment I absolutely relate to. This is what songs should be.
One of my favorites from Tom. Brad's vocals are amazing. It hit me as soon as I heard that beautiful chorus. Th 9th did it along with the killer harmonies on the hook line. I love how Brad's lead stay's basically straight as the backgrounds move melodically. Very Beatles.
Boston was the band (Foreplay/Long-Time) that came crashing through my childhood and opened my mind to music (guitars!) like the freakin Kool-Aid guy.
I remember dropping the needle on this album for the first time. It wasnt only magic but life changing. After hearing it. I knew I had to learn to play guitar.
This always been my favorite Boston song. Hard to explain, guitar leads are just so fluid. Along with Brads soulful lyrics ❤️❤️
My father got to see them live back when they exploded. He said they sounded just like the record. Not many bands can pull that off. Such a shame that we lost Brad. His voice was incredible.
Saw them in ‘87 when Third Stage came out in Detroit. Your dad was right, the sound at the concert was exactly like the album. Perfect. They played four encores, and were cheered loudly when the house lights came on full after the last encore.
@@danawold4547 wow. What a show that must have been.
Saw them on that tour, in Seattle. Dave Edmunds and Rockpile opened. It was indeed flawless.
Saw them at the '79 Texxas Jam along with Heart, Nazareth, BOC, Van Halen and Sammy Hagar.
They were actually suspect to lip syncing to a tape once which is total crap. They did sound like the records!
To this day, this song resonates with me from the day Brad Delp passed away.
The emotional intensity of that song is unparalleled. One of my favorite solos too.
Listening to Boston just brings back happy memories of my childhood. I still love them.
I knew this was gonna be Rick's favorite song. Very expressive and the vocals were fantastic.
The crescendo that builds into the chorus is flat out perfect. This song while lesser known is probably me 2nd or 3rd favorite Boston song. In my opinion EVERY song on their first 3 albums is fantastic, so that's saying something.
No matter how many times I listen to this song, goosebumps, every time. Probably my favorite Boston song.
Thank you for the music education...I agree...A MAn I ll NEver Be is my favorite Boston song. Now I appreciate it even more. What a voice Brad had.
The moment you said it was off their second album, I knew it had to be this one. One of the most genuinely vulnerable songs ever. And that organ at the climax still hits amazingly hard after all these years.
Rick, that was brilliant .... and you didn't even cover the organ swell into the piano outro either. I remember being blown away with the first Boston album but for me this track is their Piece de Resistance. It has everything in it and none of it is too much and all of it is used. Tom is a pure genius.
Definitely my favorite Boston song too, and an INCREDIBLE guitar lead.
I would love to hear an interview with Tom Schultz. Whatever insights he wants to give us on his songwriting and the methods he would use.
Yes, that would be priceless. I sure don't know why he wouldn't.
I've heard that Tom (Scholz) is incredibly hard for interviews. I dunno why but can probably see why. I'd like to see Beato pick his brain, extremely intriguing.
I came here to say that Beato should reach out to Tom. Would be nothing short of an incredibly interesting interview.
If ever there was a person to pull off the best interview with Tom Scholz, it would be Rick Beato.
yes!
It’s great to see this song get so much respect. I’ve always thought this was Brad’s best vocal performance.
Agreed. Absolutely gorgeous.
@@gregbates2844 Totally agree. When I saw the title "breaking down favorite boston song" I thought it would be this song. It is their best IMO.
I so love the Boston sound and the late(great!) Bradley Delp's vocal ability! He was so great and nowhere was that evident? But in a live setting where he could really open his beautiful voice and he sounded great either with the high octane rockers or the ballads even before they came up with the whole "powerballad" thing Brad was so great at what he did I'm so sad he's gone but I can still enjoy the music!
My go to "mix check/production idea" song and albums. Tom is a genius and the band are legendary players. Thank you for keeping Boston (also my musical home town) in the public's mind. ☮️❤️🤘🏼
I always loved Sib Hashian’s drumming . And Brads voice in this song is stunning . Good choice Rick
first listened to it as teenager, years later Rick brought up this song, I still remember the beautiful melody on first hearing it again in decades
I fell in love with this song, one night in my apartment in the 80s. I had a decent to pretty good stereo at the time and placement of my speakers must have been in their "sweet spots", and lo and behold the guitars sound huge and captured my ears, heart and soul.
My favorite Boston song. Brad's vocals are incredible and Tom's playing is probably the best of his career.
My hubby introduced me to Boston years after the albums were created - part of why I love him!
One of the most heart-wrenchingly beautiful songs ever.
This has always been my favorite Boston tune..Brad's voice, Tom's awesome guitar, the melody, the lyrics get me every time. There is a youtube video of the band in concert, and near the end when the organ part starts, a massive church type organ raises up from the floor, at the back of the stage, and Tom lays into those chords..just amazing. "You'll never know just how hard I try.."
Everything Boston made was absolute ear candy. This was a beautiful song.Brad Delp had to be my favorite vocalist ever.
It's nice to hear this is your favorite Boston song. I always loved this one. The guitar melody is amazing.
I'm so happy you anylized this one: I think it's their masterpiece. I love the typical doubled voice in chorous, the solo part, the theme repeated by guitar, the chords progression and the lyrics too!
12:00 Reminds me of the chorus of the Holland-Dozier-Holland penned "Stop In The Name Of Love" by the Supremes. The added dissonance tugs at the heart.
My ears always feel so happy when Rick picks up his guitar. It sounds as if it's Super-Tuned. The notes aren't just close to the correct pitch, they're exactly, precisely correct to the 1024th decimal place. Every string.
_Super-Tuned._
Always chills. “Cry a little longer / hold a little tighter…”
This has been one of my favourite songs for most of my life but after hearing Rick explain it all, I finally realise WHY it’s so good. Fantastic.
That song is so beautiful! I love when the harmonies kick in. I’ve always loved being by myself in the car and blasting this song! Singing along and I’m sure I sound awful 😂😂
This song is so beautiful, both the melody and the words literally bring tears to my eyes. Thank you for this!
Tom Schultz is not your average rock musician. A classically trained piano player and an MIT grad who likes to rock. His guitar harmonies are impeccable.
That's a great point!🎉
One of my favorites from them, absolute gem! Used to listen together with dad full volume when mom was not at home. Took me to space every time.
There will never be another band like Boston...the sound! Wow!
This is such a geek out video for us music theory lovers showcasing great harmonic movement, voice leading etc. Great job Rick.
This was always my fav Boston song.... Every time I see a picture of my wife and I, I always think "how'd that guy hook that up?" For me this is "A Man She's Making Me". Yes, the music is wonderful as well. I listened to this over and over when it came out.
I was a kid from mid 80s to mid90s "mid decade kid" and cough a glimpse of Boston at the tail end of their carrier and OH MAN! what a band. I still love them I'm in my mid 50s .....now...
Got to meet them during their 1979 tour while attending James Madison University and our fraternity (TKE) was providing ushering / security services. Brad Delp added so much to Tom's songs and when I heard about his suicide, it reminded me of one of my favorite groups as a kid -- Badfinger.
Badfinger, tragic.
I don’t know what song Rick’s gonna say but nothing beats the pop scrumptiousness of “More Than A Feeling.”
true but kinda overplayed then and now.
Great commentary, great analysis as always! It's true that the chords lead and inspire the melodies. You can't go wrong looking to Boston for learning and making yourself a better musician!
That's a great song. That and Hitch a Ride are my favorite Boston songs and maybe overall.
Rick…I have so much respect for you that I cannot put in words.
I got the Beato bundle and it’s the best gift I’ve given myself so far this year 😊
To me, you are an amazing teacher and the coolest cat on the block, and I feel blessed to have you as one of my sources of inspiration.
Thank you. The world needs more dudes like you. Stay blessed.
Third Stage is my favorite Boston album, extremely under rated
So cool. This is my favorite Boston song too, since I first heard it in 1981. It will always resonate.
In August of 1979, I start my senior year of high school. I'm a drum major in the marching band. We're starting fall practices, and this new girl from TX has moved in over the summer. First practice and a friend of mine introduces us. She's amazing. Her laugh and her smile, and her red shirt and white shorts, melt me, and we hit it off immediately. I'm done for! For some reason she agrees to go out with me for pizza and for the next couple of months, we're inseparable. For a reason I can't explain, I get cold feet. One night I'm listening to Boston's second album. This song comes on and, in my youthful "ignorance", I decided that I can't date her anymore because I don't think I'm "man enough" for her. That, to her, I'm "the man I'll never be". So, naturally, I break up with her. It doesn't take more than a couple of days and I come to my senses. I tell her I've made a big, mistake. Huge. She thinks so, too. We get back together during a Friday night football game and date for another 18 months before we break up once and for all. So, this is an amazing song for all the reasons Beato describes, but then I have a 42-year-old memory of my own to go along with it, too!
Absolutely love this song. Brad Delp always delivered incredible vocals.
I want "Feelin' Satisfied" played in loop at my memorial--MY favorite Boston song. 'Don't Look Back' isn't as polished, or as tight as their debut...however, it's humanity makes it more approachable and an easier listen.
The opening song to this album is one of my all-time favourites. I love this whole album so much.
Thank you for braking this down. This has always been my favorite Boston song. I know it inside and out. nice to see you delve into it in such detail. You are a master, Sir.
The Piano was a Yamaha C7 recorded by Dave Butler in Boston, outside Tom's studio. 4 mics were used... then Tom squashed it with a DBX 160. Dave told me how it went. RIP Dave.
This song is about as "musical" and powerful as it can get. So good.
My older brother took me to see Boston on my 16th birthday.back in 1978.i still get chills when I think about it.brad deep. Was to good
Even their demos sounded fantastic!
Rick I really want to thank you for your wonderful fun and exciting and educational videos. I'm 58 and love the same music you choose. I recently had 2 strokes and have a hard time with depression but again your videos make me happy. Music has always made me happy . I guess music has a way of becoming part of our DNA and a gift from God.Blessings to you Rick
The walk down chord/melody interplay reminds me a lot of Joni Mitchell's 'Case of You'... gorgeous!
I don't know precisely what it is, but Boston's electric guitars have an absolutely unique sound that no other band has ever duplicated. It's one of the things I love so much about this band.
Besides being tremendous, Brad's voice is so easily identifiable- as is the Boston sound in general. As a kid, I always thought they sounded over-produced, later I realized they were perfectionists who were just that good.
Tom Scholz, MIT grad and Boston's musical genius produced everything and played most every instrument, a complete one off non record label product.
@@autk Knew he was an MIT guy and clever as hell, and his vision for the sound was so impressive- the ear of an engineer.
@@freefallin6871 Scholz towering Genius never really received the credit that should have come his way from the music industry...the album sales were a testament to it but so much about Tom has been shrouded for far too long, glad Rick shined some light as he has in the past.
@@autk Agreed and well stated.
@@freefallin6871 These records we can listen to forever thank goodness! Happy Sunday ☀️
