If Rick Beato isn't the coolest guy alive, I don't know who is. These shows are phenomenal. Talk about going down a rabbit hole - I could watch these all day!
During this pandemic stint in "unemployment", I feel (almost) guilty for enjoying at least 2 of these vids per day now! This has become the Summer of Beato!
The first guitar solo ( 8:52 ) is "the midnight train." Neil is painting us a picture of a train with the guitar. The harmonic is the locomotive engine releasing steam. The four repeating notes is the "clickity-clack" of the train, which gets faster, and ends with the horn, "Whoooooo..."
“No Johnny, don’t stop believing” I almost broke down in tears. Think about it. A son asking his dad for advice. A father giving his son the encouragement to pursue his dream...with a poetic line that becomes the inspiration for a song that’s now a classic. Great story.
it's almost too great if you know what I mean. I'm not sayin' I'm... hehe... not believin'... but yeah, sometimes these stories are little too perfecto
@@Virtualnoaidi I would believe it, my frequent dealings with Jonathan gave me the impression he was a straight shooter, and not driven by ego. He certainly never bs'ed or ego-tripped me, although I never asked the origins of that song. He was not Hollywood
Agree. And that is why I am surprised that Rick Beato did not speak overtly about Steve Perry's singing and vocal clarity. Those two things were a big part of this band's success and I think this is the only Journey song that is covered in Beato's series. He demonstrates his appreciation for the singing and vocal sound throughout, but he never actually mentions Steve Perry's name.
@@Markothunder I saw Journey live in concert back sometime in 2020, I was one of those people who was doubting whether or not they would *really* sound like Journey since Steve Perry left, but I got to say that Arnel Pineda is genuinely incredible with how similar he sounds and sings compared to Steve Perry. I was astonished because he was that good in concert.
Man I love Steve Perry's voice. He should definitely be mentioned in the same conversation as Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant when listing top rock vocalists of all time.
He often gets overlooked when talking about "rock" singers because many feel his style is not rock. One of the all time greatest voices and talented singers? Yes, but the guys in Journey referred to him as a "crooner" and details like that often are why people don't make certain top ___ lists. Journey is/was a rock "band" but the question remains if that means Perry is a "rock singer". Personally, I agree and feel he is in part a rock singer but more than that. A more typical rock singer might be characterized as a Paul Rogers, Brian Johnson, Roger Daltry, etc., but I agree singers like Perry can also be classified as "rock" as well.
True story. I first stumbled across Rick’s WMTSG series back around Episode 17, Boston. So, March of 2018. I immediately told my brother about these, and we quickly consumed the previous episodes and eagerly consumed each new episode as they came out. Somewhere along the way, I casually remarked to my brother, “You know, if Rick ever does an episode on ‘Don’t stop believing,’ I’ll die a happy man.” Fast forward to June 2019, and I’m scheduled to have heart surgery. It’s a routine, low-risk procedure, but, you know, HEART SURGERY. The Sunday before the procedure, I wake up to find that Rick has posted Episode 69, the band is Journey, and the song is . . . Don’t Stop Believin’. So thanks, Rick, for simultaneously focusing on the song above all others I wanted to see AND making me fear I was about to die. Spoiler Alert, the surgery was a success, and it’s all good. Don’t Stop Believin’ . . .
Charles!! Sooo glad you are still kickin, my friend!!! Now, keep yourself social distanced, we’ll all return back to normal in a few months!! I love hangin out in this channel during this a bit stressful time, for sure!! Take Care!!
Omg. This is hilarious and so heart warming. I got 'the scar' myself last year. Use the whole year to build back up, build new routines, try out new, BETTER food. Enjoy the hell out of the next year. Your best medicine. Congrats! and Good Luck!!
You probably won’t see my comment Rick, but Neal Schon is my cousin! I grew up going to Journey concerts with my dad. I’ve hung out with Neal many times backstage and it’s always a great time. I loved this video so much. Thank you
Well Adam, tell Cousin Neal I can't wait to see them when they come around my town (Montreal) next March. In the meantime, tell him to pamper his fingers and all their throats so we can have the best show! Thank you kindly.
That is so awesome to say you're related to a LEGEND!!! I am also jealous you grew up going to Journey concerts. I can only say I grew up listening to Journey since I was a baby. My parents would play the greatest hits CD often on the weekends when I was little. Out of all the bands they listen to I have found to really like and enjoy Journey the best. Out of the bands I grew up on I've only seen The Doobie Brothers. We will be seeing Journey for the first time in February!
I was substitute teaching at a high school last year. They had a pep rally, and were playing music as the kids came in. They played Don't Stop Believin' and the ENTIRE SCHOOL sang along. It was surreal for an 80's kid who was in junior high when it came out.
A lot of times in crowds when Don't Stop Belivin' is played everyone sings along. 2 months ago i was at a Stryper concert and Separate Ways (World's Apart) Comes on over the speakers and most of the people in the crowd singing along. I had cold chills. Also, it felt like those 5 minutes slowed down...I guess because I was in the moment. I am like whenever I see Journey I'd love for time to just go slow as possible! But time flies when you're having fun.
I would recommend checking out Steve Perry's latest Solo album 'Traces', if you haven't already. Don't expect the same exact voice but it's still great to hear new music from "The voice".
He went to school here, and comes around once in a while, since he still has family here. They owned a dairy and the local Radio station on East Lacey. Seems like they changed their name from Peria. Use to hear him sing at HHS. He had a powerful voice for a tiny guy.
Great voice, but the way he constantly mispronounces words drives me up the wall. "Yust a small-town," "Yivin' in a," "Stain-jurs" "Ruppen down the Boulevard," "Steetlights," etc.
I had more or less the same thought when he broke into air guitar for a few seconds.. Someone as talented as Rick playing air guitar to a Journey tune.. Doesn't get much better!
If any other band came out with this song, I honestly don't believe it would've become the classic icon it is. Steve Perry's voice is what truly escalates this song to "utter greatness".
I think it might have been as good, if not better, if Boston had recorded it, and almost as good if REO Speedwagon, or Styx had done so. All three of these groups could have done it well, I believe.
Or Jonathon Cains.. piano lines that structured the entire tune.. but yeah, Steve helped...he also tried to break up the band..so there's that..Still a great song and a great band.
@@imkluu Of course they all could have "done well," they're all very talented artists, but there's only 1 Steve Perry and he is the definitive sound of Journey's most popular songs.
In case you were wondering why Steve Perry’s nickname was “the voice” now you know why. The most overplayed song ever still sounds amazing. What a masterpiece.
I'm a big Schon fan as well but hearing Steve Perry isolated is just stunning. What a talent he was. Escape was a huge record in my life, instantly taken back to so many good times whenever I hear any of those songs.
@Doctor Detroit I think it's journey as a whole the whole group was a great group that's why they sold millions of records people still listen to them today
^ This. The vast majority of pop/rock singers, *especially* today, would sound like absolute crap if they weren't buried in over-produced, wall-of-sound music.
they worked on a simple melody to make the best out of it, cause the scale as also stated by rick is not comlpicated at all, but the delivery by journey makes it sound way bigger
Rick, really goo guy. Suggestion, for what it' worth. The analysis of the song is perfect. But it's difficult to hear the continuity of the entire song while breaking it up first. You get to hear the breaking up the song into analysis before you hear the entire song. You left with tie bits of the whole, while I was begging to hear it in full context. Never heard anyone do such fine analysis on songs you would not usually done. I'll probably get your book when my finances blossom a bit. Your UA-cam sight is terrific.
@@robertwest2198 Not sure if there would be copyright issues in showing the whole thing. As it stands, I'd guess it fits within education/analysis, because it isn't played in its entirety.
Steve Perry live in concert during Journey’s heyday was awe-inspiring! I never missed a Journey tour with Steve when it came to my town. I will never forget those concerts or Steve’s incredible vocals. We’ll never see performances or hear music like this again.
You want to see a grown man enjoy what he does? Watch the joy Rick experiences from 18:46 right up to the main chorus of the song. You can tell Neal Shon is definitely one of his favorite lead guitarists of all time.
When people are driving in their cars and those old Journey songs come on the radio everybody starts to sing.....and we all sound horrible. Steve Perry was just amazing.
Not me, first off, I rarely listen to the radio, and if I happen to and Journey comes on, I change the channel. Loved Neil Schon, couldn't stand their music.
I agree as have the song cranked and think I am harmonizing beautifully and cut song volume to hear myself. Mistake, turn back up immediately and back to thinking I'm a rock star!
I don't know if I am the Only One... But I have the sense that Rick Beato put a lot of heart and soul on this Review... Rick you nailed it... God Bless You!
Journey ROCKS !!! I'm 68 years old, a drummer, and this song is one of my all time favorites. I can listen to Steve Perry's vocals, with Neil, Smith, and Cain all day long.
@A Design Not that many, but true. I have a friend with a Ph.D in music and she analyses everything to a ridiculous degree, rather than just enjoying it.
One of the best parts of the opening verse is Perry's rhythm at "anywhere;" the dotted quarter, eighth-quarter combination, which he repeats at the second half. It adds to the atmospheric feel of the words, painting the picture. So overlooked, too.
Everybody loves this song, it's SO GOOD that it's become cliche. It's gotta be the #1 cliche rock song ever. Now here's Rick, showing us why we love it so much all over again, in a way that only Rick can do. I love watching this guy, he's so enthusiastic about music and you can tell that his favorite thing in the world is to share it with others.
Your "What Makes This Song Great?" series is an inspiration and gave me vision/insight into the intricacies of the rock music I grew up with and loved so much but never really understood at this level. I'm in my 70's now and still enjoy every note! Thank you Rick Beato.
These videos REALLY point out the thought process...the hard work...and countless hours these bands put in to get their songs exactly right and THAT is what is missing in today's music! You have a gift of teaching, as well as, explaining, that makes your videos one-of-a-kind!
Rick, didja ever notice how Steve Perry ALWAYS finishes his words in his songs? Doesn't drop endings, or the "-ing"s, or whatever. He always cleanly enunciates all the words he sings. Amazing. Most singers would just slop their way through, "adding feeling," but Steve didn't need to do that to bring the tingling. How cool. Thanks for an incredibly listenable program. Your videos are all solid gold, no wasted moments. Thank you!!!
The whole song is a hook. There’s no part that’s NOT a hook. Lol. That’s why they could milk the whole thing for so long, without revealing the instruments, and the “Don’t Stop” line. The whole song was so damn strong, they didn’t need to. They knew what they had, and had the wisdom to be patient.
I first got hooked on the chorus, but its become so oveplayed its lost some of its magic, and I prefer the last prechorus now. And I wasnt even born in 81, which is a testament to how ubiqutous this song has been since the 2000s.
Didn't he get something done on his vocals because there was something wrong (my bad I totally forgot what it was) and he couldn't sing for years? It has just been recently, during the past 5 years or so, he tried singing after a while. I grew up with hearing classic rock and I remember listening to a lot of Styx and Journey from my dad's CD's
Damn fine dissection of this amazing song. Steve Perry’s voice is so incredible, and to hear it isolated was the most incredible experience. Shon guitar playing is so stellar, understated and powerful. That ostinato that introduces his part is badass. Top notch band.
Loved this YT recommendation. I am such a Journey/Steve Perry fan (older generations are always surprise when they know my love and joy for them). When Steve's vocals came trough I got teary eyed😢 but with good emotions behind it. Steve's album Traces is *such* a treat. I sure love SP so, *SO MUCH*
didnt steal ladies hearts like Perry...different style of music...if Boston did their Faithfully maybe, but Brad didnt have the swag Perry did...guys that look like females like Perry have the David Cassidy impact. His soulful Sam Cooke voice helped a lot of course...
I agree and my parents did the same played the old songs which from that out of all the bands they listen to I like Journey the best and Huey Lewis & the News 2nd and 3rd The Doobie Brothers. From branching out from what they had on tape and CD and I discovered Boston I really like them too along with Foreigner. Out of the bands that my parents listened to before i was born and they would still listen to it after i was born the band I have seen and twice is Doobie Brothers and we will be seeing Journey next year!!! :)
I saw Journey when they toured promoting this album, and that song had a "new" sound to it. I was into progressive rock (being a huge Steve Morse fan) and it showed why Journey was ahead of their time, and was a group comprised of excellent musicians. The friends I hung around with back then were musicians who had the same taste in music as I did, and Journey was on a short list of "popular" groups we listened to, and went to their concerts. I always find it amusing when some people don't understand just how good they were just because they got a lot of air time. One of the top lineups of all time who simply put out great music. Thanks for the video!
This has quickly become my favorite Music Channel on UA-cam, or anywhere else for that matter. I have never witnessed this level of joy and excitement for great music from someone so well versed in it. Watching these videos is such a positive experience in so many ways. 100 thumbs up lol.
I listened to an interview Steve Perry did years ago on CBC, talking about this song. He mentioned how it was never a #1 hit on the radio, but became their most popular song live by a HUGE margin, and of course, always gets the crowd singing along. From that interview: "He only found out later there is no such place as the "south Detroit" he sings about -that south of the U.S. city is the Ontario city of Windsor. "I tried north Detroit, I tried east and west and it didn't sing, but south Detroit sounded so beautiful. I loved the way it sounded, only to find out later it's actually Canada," Perry said."
The lyrics are so important for this song. Thanks for the story behind "don't stop believing". People need encouragement. This is a very powerful anthem for people to not give up or give in!
Steve Perry is a vocalist nonpareil, there’s simply no one who could sing in his vocal range with such ease and tonal quality. He set a bar so high ,what a force of nature! Great analysis.
I been playing this song pretty much every weekend since ‘04 w/ my band. Our singer crushes it every time and as overplayed as it is I never get tired of playing Steve Smiths part. It’s a challenge to nail it cleanly and to make it groove. Great song😉👍
The drums are pretty great. It keeps the pulse but is not a common rock beat at all. That's what appeals to me the most. Oh yeah, his voice is awesome too. Cheers.
I read an interview with Rod Morgenstein of the Dixie Dregs. He auditioned for Journey, along with 300 other people, when Steve Smith was fired in 86. He said he didn't get the gig because he played this song straight out of respect for Steve's part. He kicked himself for years for not playing it exactly like originally done.
BanBan Chi that's not quite right - he played it note for note, but one of the band members (I think Steve Perry) said that the part was part of the past, and that he wanted something new. Rod hadn't planned on that, and couldn't think of anything new that he could have played, not surprisingly, so at that point he just played it straight. This is from a Modern Drummer interview, and it rings true to me. IIRC, there was some beef between Smith and perry, and perry kind of wanted to erase him. He also wanted more of a soul oriented drummer, whereas Schon wanted a more fusion-y kind of drummer.
@Art Lady there hasn't been music with musicians that you found, because there's lot of good music out there actually, it's just that's not mainstream. Just search Greta Van Fleet on youtube and you'll see.
...in my view, Perry's unique and incredible voice is the MAIN thing that makes this song great...yes, the piano, guitars, bass, drums, production...all contribute beautifully to this track...but that voice...without that, this would never be a great song... Rick, your passion has a beauty...and I'm moved by your admission ( during your interpretation of the solo) that you 'don't have the strength to bend it up that high'...even though in a subsequent attempt, you play it well!...THAT'S what makes THIS SEGMENT and your sharing all of yourself with us, GREAT! Thanks man. I can't support your channel as I'd like, but I bought something from your store. Just enjoying you and your love of 'all things music' so much...this world is much more interesting and beautiful place with you in it sir...
I've only heard this song 1,000 times and I can not get tired of it. Thanks, Rick, for pointing out and soloing the tracks and explaining it all. KILLER!
“Escape” is an album that you could make a “What Makes This Song Great?” on each track. Excellent work sir! And the short segment with your daughter is one of the most precious things I’ve seen.
Absolutely. I used to work in San Francisco and I mentioned to a co-worker my love and admiration of this band, it's members, and of course the songs. He had a bit of a smirk on his face and I asked him, but he was hesitant. I said, "go on- I can take it." He told me(even though he grew up in San Francisco) he wasn't a big fan. I asked him why and he said because the music is 'bubble gum.' 20 years later and I'm still a little saddened and confused by this.
Steve Perry has a perfect voice! I worked for Journey on their tour in 2019 so I listened to Arnel sing every night and he's good but he's no Steve Perry
Dean Castronovo was (and still is) a better singer than Arnel. When they had Jeff Scott Soto, they had the potential to break from the Steve Perry's ghost (Even Perry himself said it).
Yes, I think Arnel is good, but he's enjoyable to listen to because he sounds so similar to Steve. But yes, no offense to him, he is a mere shadow of the voice of Steve Perry.
CURSE YOU, RICK! I GOTTA GO OUT INTO THE WORLD AND BE PRODUCTIVE AND YOU MAKE ME WANNA SIT AND LISTEN TO YOU ALL DAY!!! On the serious side, thanks for what you do... ;-)
The first time I played in a group after years of hiatus, it was this song, on bass. I sat in with a duo when I heard this song begin, then interrupted and said, "It needs the bass part. Yes I can play it."
Hearing that piano introduction still gives me chills and makes me emotional after all these years. Like you Rick, born in '62, this music is part of my inner being. It's like being back in '81 all over again.
Same here! Such a great piano intro and the same for Faithfully....cold chills. I saw back in May a Journey tribute bands called Separate Ways and they sound amazing, when the final 2 songs were Faithfully and Don't Stop Believin' I was actually getting emotional and trying not to cry. I tell ya, whenever I see Journey no doubt I'll be doing so much crying!
Here in Portugal, we absolutely ADORE Steve Perry and Journey. Steve has not forgotten his roots, and we are so proud of him, not just for his talent but his sweet soul. TY Steve + Journey !!❤❤❤❤
You’re the cutest thing. You can play such complex things and it’s pure joy on your face listening and breaking down this journey tune. You are a blessing to people searching for knowledge. Thank you for all you do for so many!
Dude, I have always loved this song but you failed to even mention my favorite part which is the brilliant bass line. I'm a drummer but that bass has stuck with me my entire life.
Steve Perry is probably one of the best vocalists ever. His phrasing is beautiful and he sounds incredibly, deceivingly, powerful even though he really sings every note soft and clear and measured. More than one vocalist has ruined his voice trying to emulate him. He’s just great.
@@n0tk0sher But it’s no lol matter. I was the lead singer in a cover band for 5 years and we had to drop all Journey songs down five keys for my range, and I’m a tenor!
Universe: We need a guy that can explain, simply, every note and nuance of every great song ever recorded, and that can play each instrument discussed with great aplomb. Rick Beato: Hold my beer.
David Bennett Piano does a great job with musical nuance as well. He's also a huge Beatles fan. English fellow with the face of a 12-year-old and the musical knowledge of a 60-year-old music theory professor. However, he doesn't play along the way Rick does.
He is not the guy then.....Notice how he doesn't play Neil Schon''s intro lick on guitar?? Cause it's to hard for him. He can't. That's what annoys me about this video . He acts like a virtuoso . Instead of just saying .. "This part right here ? This 4 note pattern? Which is a repeating pattern that starts slow then speeds up to sub light speed as it fades in. Is played on the 2nd 3rd strings...... Frets 17,16 on the 2nd string . Frets 18,16 on the 3rd string. He can talk the talk he can't walk the walk. First and last video of his i will watch. All he does is talk and play the easy parts. Its easy to hear why the easy parts are great. Break down why this hard part is great. Breaks down every part hahaha
Rick, you are teaching us so much and I'm not sure we know it. Keep on doing what you do. I'm learning while enjoying...GREAT work! That's true education.
When I tell you what makes Beato great, Your not gonna like it,.. but, when we isolate his vocals, can you hear it?... that's right., that's the distinctive sound of Autotunes! And when we remove the all the autotune aides and listen.. now Rick's voice sounds like Mickey Rourke 5 days into a Coke bender, averaging half a carton of non filters a day.. Auto-Beato had us all fooled.... 👉😥

Great video and breakdown of a Song that continues to grow even 40 years after it was written. Neal Schon is my guitar hero. I was 11 years old in 1979 hearing the song Lights on my brothers radio. Neal’s solo inspired me to wanna play. I had no idea who was playing guitar or Journey was. I begged my parents for an electric guitar.

You probably won’t see my comment Rick, but Neal Schon is my cousin! I grew up going to Journey concerts with my dad. I’ve hung out with Neal many times backstage and it’s always a great time. I loved this video so much. Thank you
Awesome Adam! I'm a little jealous! Been a Neal and Journey fan since the 70's!
Well Adam, tell Cousin Neal I can't wait to see them when they come around my town (Montreal) next March. In the meantime, tell him to pamper his fingers and all their throats so we can have the best show! Thank you kindly.
Cool, Neal is one of the top 5 guitarists of all time, hands down!!!!!
Seeing Journey and Neal tonight in Saskatoon, SK!!
I was substitute teaching at a high school last year. They had a pep rally, and were playing music as the kids came in. They played Don't Stop Believin' and the ENTIRE SCHOOL sang along. It was surreal for an 80's kid who was in junior high when it came out.
What you have found my dear is rarer than the eagle thrusted hilltop woodpecker.
Music that touches all hearts.
GenXers have done a remarkable job of teaching their kids about music and keeping the good stuff alive.
Soo Cool!
Wow - hearing the isolated vocal tracks made me even more of a fan of Steve Perry - insanely talented - Thanks Rick - love this series!

I love that Candlestick Park video where he is singing along with the crowd.
He went to school here, and comes around once in a while, since he still has family here. They owned a dairy and the local Radio station on East Lacey. Seems like they changed their name from Peria. Use to hear him sing at HHS. He had a powerful voice for a tiny guy.
I said "had" a powerful voice, because we're pushing seventy.
Great voice, but the way he constantly mispronounces words drives me up the wall. "Yust a small-town," "Yivin' in a," "Stain-jurs" "Ruppen down the Boulevard," "Steetlights," etc.

And I could watch his face all day. Seeing the delight while he’s enjoying music is joyous.
So much cool nuance. Steve Perry was insane. Neil tears this thing up so beautifully. It's hard, no impossible, not to sing along.
Everybody loves this song, it's SO GOOD that it's become cliche. It's gotta be the #1 cliche rock song ever. Now here's Rick, showing us why we love it so much all over again, in a way that only Rick can do.
Just one more reason I love Steve Perry is his diction. His consonants give me life!
Cue in James LaBrie who nowadays only sings the first syllables in a concert and just hums the rest.
Lovin' touchin' squeezin' would like a word with you. Hahahha
Justin Wickliffe Aww there ya got me!😬
Well.... it was written that way?
The whole song is a hook. There’s no part that’s NOT a hook. Lol. That’s why they could milk the whole thing for so long, without revealing the instruments, and the “Don’t Stop” line. The whole song was so damn strong, they didn’t need to.
They knew what they had, and had the wisdom to be patient.
Ryan Duran Yeah, just about every melody could be a chorus for a potential song.
I first got hooked on the chorus, but its become so oveplayed its lost some of its magic, and I prefer the last prechorus now. And I wasnt even born in 81, which is a testament to how ubiqutous this song has been since the 2000s.
The point of the song is to build to a chorus and finish big with it. If every song was structured this way there would be nothing unique about it.
Well the whole thing is very melodic
Steve Perry doesn't get the praise he deserves...his voice is incredible!
He was taking volce lessons

Didn't he get something done on his vocals because there was something wrong (my bad I totally forgot what it was) and he couldn't sing for years? It has just been recently, during the past 5 years or so, he tried singing after a while. I grew up with hearing classic rock and I remember listening to a lot of Styx and Journey from my dad's CD's

I listened to an interview Steve Perry did years ago on CBC, talking about this song. He mentioned how it was never a #1 hit on the radio, but became their most popular song live by a HUGE margin, and of course, always gets the crowd singing along.
From that interview:
"He only found out later there is no such place as the "south Detroit" he sings about -that south of the U.S. city is the Ontario city of Windsor.
"I tried north Detroit, I tried east and west and it didn't sing, but south Detroit sounded so beautiful. I loved the way it sounded, only to find out later it's actually Canada," Perry said."

Ian Werden probably the most iconic rock and roll drum groove of that era, with the possible exception of In The Air Tonight.
You should do a series called “what makes this song so bad”. I would like to understand why I hate most of today’s music.

Rick, you are teaching us so much and I'm not sure we know it. Keep on doing what you do. I'm learning while enjoying...GREAT work! That's true education.
What a fantastic series, just keeps getting better. The entertainment value is off the charts.
This show should be called “What Makes Rick Beato Great”
the channel could be called that tbh.
👉😥
@@shawnseal1762 Domo Arigato, Auto-Beato
@@shawnseal1762 really, that's all you got is auto tune??? I dont think Rick is trying to impress anybody with his voice here. It's his understanding of music, recording, instruments etc. etc. etc. I guess you were unimpressed.
@@nbt3663 bro?.. I can't believe I have to ask this.. but here we go. Do you think that I actually isolated Rick Beato's vocals?. And then I actually accused him of using auto tunes when making his UA-cam video breakdown of a song?... or, do you think maybe it was an attempt at levity? With the intent of making a few Beato fans (like myself) laugh, or at least smile. Even coming up with a rhyming nickname for the faux vilan, "Auto-Beato"... but clearly my attempt at humor has missed the mark for you.. Consumed by shame, I vow to do better next time!
The piano riffs by Cain, "The Voice" - Steve Perry's UNBELIEVABLE vocals, Neal's vision on guitar, the change ups, the unique arrangements on drums by Steve Smith, and this song is STILL the SH*T 41 YEARS down the road!!
And these guys recorded the song in one take!!! ... Say WHAT!!?? Wow!!
It is an incredible, positive, and extremely uplifting song!!
It is just STUPID great stuff!!
Wow, that drum analysis is mind blowing. Hard to “un-hear” it now
Being of mechanical mind this has been so eye opening to me. I have always had to know how everything works. This includes mechanics /machining/chemistry. These videos have opened my eyes to the people who always say "I don't not care how it works just fix it". This is exactly what my view of music has been until now.
EVERYONE knows and loves this song!!
There probably isn't a day goes by I don't play this but i never in 30 odd years realised that don't stop believin isn't sung until 3 minutes plus into the track.
Steve's voice omg ++++
Another great analysis.
I love Rick's puppyish enthusiasm. This track is, if anything, even better live - the 1981 Houston concert in particular.
When the video started I saw the enthusiasm and I was like yeah, he either really likes this song or he's a fan of Journey and can't wait to introduce the video. I was thinking more than likely it's Don't Stop Believin' and it was.
To see Journey live was on my bucket list and I was able to see them at the Houston Livestock Rodeo March 2022. Man I had an Awesome seat😃
@@mamadee66 Journey is on my bucket list as well and I will finally get to see them next month!!! I'm so excited!!! I am more excited to see them than Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Stryper who both were on my bucket list and have since seen them TSO 2016 and Stryper 2023. There's been about 3 times I almost saw Journey and then either couldn't go because of something else going on and the pandemic canceled a show that we planned on going.
Congratulations to Rick for reaching 1 million Subscribers!!
Michael Luzius That’s so awesome! I’ve been here for awhile, so it’s pretty rewarding to see a good content creator getting recognition 🙂
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 I agree. Rick's content is definitely far above the norm. Love it!
TFW the chorus is just the prechorus melody over the verse progression...AND IT'S FRIGGIN' GLORIOUS!
Thanks for the Steve Smith mention he's a helluva fusion drummer his stick control and playing in general, is amazing.
Honestly, Journey's rhythm section (Steve Smith and Ross Valory) don't get enough credit for their contributions to the band.
"When I was having dinner with Jonathan Cain" like we all just have dinner with one of the all time greats on a regular basis.
Right, I mean jonathon cain stopped by my house last night and brought some Taco Bell but I wouldn’t go around saying we had dinner together.
Lawrence, not kidding, once I had dinner with both Steve Smith (Journey) and Brian Forster (child/actor/drummer) of the Partridge Family TV sitcom days. You talk about from one extreme to another....I kid you not. The rules for dinner was you couldn't talk about S. Perry at all. I found Brian Forster to be a very cool and funny guy...way down to earth. Steve Smith was cool too, but no talking about you know who....... taboo! ":^)

Perry is basically universally loathed. And not just by the guys in Journey. People generally don't like him.
@@jamesrudd8705 We'll have to kindly disagree, but I know there are those that don't get him much and hated the drama of Journey, solely blaming him. My respect for him has grown over the years and now can understand more why things happened the way they did after they all had their personal struggles with keeping a hugely successful band like Journey at the top. Looking at a mans shoes is one thing, walking in them can give you a whole new perspective of which to view from. I'm glad they're all still believin...... Blessings.......

What makes WMTSG great, in order:
(1) Being able to hear the individual tracks.(2) Rick’s enthusiasm for the music.(3) Everything else.
I so agree with you. I absolutely love to hear the individual tracks and Rick's enthusiasm for all things music is so contagious.
I'm not a musician, but I love these videos. Does anyone else notice that when Rick plays air instruments he looks so awkward, but then knocks you on the floor when he nails every lick on the real gear? I love it! Thanks for doing these, sir!
How fortunate I feel to have recently discovered you. You are so knowledgeable, and so DEEPLY passionate about music. I'm devouring your back catalog.
And 41 one years later Neal is still the biggest influence in my playing. And Journey is my favorite band.
