    That's really weird to me...EVERYONE I knew with an N64 played the shit out of this game. Weekend tournaments without fail throughout the entirety of 1998, along with Goldeneye

    • @tree_fiddy
      @tree_fiddy 4 роки тому +19

      But i'm guessing these people _only_ had an N64, so they didn't know any better? Because at that point Tekken 2, Fighting Vipers, Soul Blade and Virtua Fighter 2 were all available and miles better, and looked/played better. Especially the latter 2 games. I still liked KI Gold but couldn't help but be disappointed by the things mentioned in the video. It just didn't compare to PSX/Saturn alternatives. If those other fighters didn't exist then i'm sure it would have been far more popular.

    I remember walking by an arcade and saw that there was a KI2 in there. I got so excited that I ran next door which happened to be a bookstore. Searched through all the game magazines and found a KI2 moves list. Looked up Saberwulf's ultra and ran back to the arcade. It was 50cents to play. I beat the game with that same 50cents. @bigevilworldwide1 I know a lot of people raved about the KI game on X1 but I think the piecemeal model (i.e. buying the game character by character) was a huge turnoff.
      I think some also said the game felt like a huge departure from the originals (no fatalities/ultimate combos, street fighter 4-like cartoon graphics, gameplay engine) and it wasn't quite what they were expecting. I actually skipped the X1 this generation so I never got to play it myself, but watching gameplay vids didn't quite press the nostalgia button like loading KI and KI2 on MAME does.
      I never followed up on it much so I wasn't aware that it sold poorly. That's a shame.

    KI Gold was the only game my parents gave me for the system, so I played the hell out of it. I'd organize tournaments with friends, did all the training modes, unlocked every character skin and extra stage and just kept going. I didn't put the game down until I got Starfox 64 one Christmas. Digging in my mind I still remember the Gargos unlock cheatcode: press ZARZAB on the gamepad I think.
    It never really felt dated to me, though I do admit that wasn't a concept 13 year old me was concerned with at the time. Sure, the arcade version was crisper, had multiple endings and a higher frame rate, but I understood that you couldn't simply copy-paste everything from an arcade cabinet, there had to be cuts somewhere.
    I do remember the cartridge being heavy though, like REALLY heavy compared to other games; always did wonder what was inside. My only real disappointment wasn't with the game itself, but with the lore building. Game manuals played a big part in this back in the day, setting the stage for the events of the game so developers could skim a little content off the top; the KIG manual basically read: "a bunch of fighters are gonna kick the crap out of each other and then fight a demon gargoyle".
    Good times.

      Not really because despite being outsold massively by the PSone they still managed to have some of the best selling games of the generation so they more than turned a profit during that generation and with the success of Pokemon at the same time they were at no risk of needing to survive. People seem to be under the impression that a console selling less than another more mean that they still didn't turn a huge profit.

      @@freddiejohnson6137 Not to mention that at the end of the day, we got some of the best games of all times and games that redefined entire genres such as Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and Goldeneye... Plus, even though cartridges was a decision that backfired on Nintendo's ability to secure partnership with third parties, it allowed games that wouldn't be possible in the same manner in CD rom, such as Ocarina of Time. If that was in CD.. we would have gotten a much different game.

      I don’t think they could have even if they wanted to. The original KI used a hard drive for all FMV backgrounds, it would have been as compromised as KI Gold imo. Nintendo should have gone with CDs instead of cartridges but they liked their licensing revenue too much. KI was never going to run arcade perfect on Nintendo’s console hardware. The game wasn’t designed that way from the get go. A real arcade perfect port would have required that DD drive add on that never happened. Contrast that to Tekken and Virtua Fighter on PSX and Saturn, those games had pretty much arcade perfect ports on their respective systems.

Nintendo Power sent a VHS months before the N64bcane out and it showcased Some upcoming games like Mario64, Mario Kart 64, StarFox 64, Pilot Wings and Killer Instinct Gold. I watched that thing hundreds of times and was so excited for N64 that for 2 days prior to it coming out I didn’t sleep at all. One of the coolest things was when I was in middle school and someone came into the classroom and told me my dad was there and for me to pack my stuff and head to the office..I was like wtf...when I got into his truck he wouldn’t tell me where we were going...then we pulled up to the mall and went into Walden Software...my wonderful father had already paid for the N64 in full along with the only games available at launch, Mario64 and Pilot Wings64...I lost my shit...I was the only i]kid in school with the N64 for a few months...pretty sure it was released in the fall and some kids got it for Christmas...was hard to get though...was sold out everywhere...then Shadows of the Empire, the Mario Kart64...StarFox64....man I wish I had a time machine

      Auto combos don't belong in fighting games. It was a gimmick to try and stand out from the other fighters at the time. The newest KI entry decided it would be cool to bring them back. It feels even more gimmicky when you compare it to games like Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, Guilty Gear Xrd and other competitive fighters. I guess Dragon Ball FighterZ has a bit of the "auto combos" but it's precisely why I think of that game as a casual fighter and not a competitive one.

    It is still the greatest N64 fighting game ever, one of the best from its generation, the only true reason why this game was ignored back in the day was the 3D fighting game trend, ironic, every one trash talks the N64 because of its trend to have only 3D games in comparison with the 2D games the Saturn or Playstation had and one of its greatest 2D games was ignored because of Tekken and Virtua Fighter... Incredible video as always, please make another one for KI on the Xbox One

    It's strange how things change. Back in the day, the N64 was berated for having a very poor selection of racing games. Where the Playstation had Ridge Racer, Gran Turismo and Need for Speed, the N64 only had kart racers. Fast forward 20 years and I watch a video about whether one should collect for the system or not and suddenly it's highly recommended for its broad range of high quality racing games in particular.

    I have a game you should check out and possibly do a video on. This game was also on the N64, and I feel like it's a hidden gem. It's called Fighters Destiny. That game was more closer to Tekken than SF in term of fighting games. Even though it was a bit clunky, it also was the ONLY fighting game I ever played back in the day that was fun af on the N64 and kinda went in a different direction and broke the traditions of round based play and also added a point based system to progress through the rounds. They even had a judgement system when there was a time out, and you won based on how you fought in the match instead how much life was left. I feel like if that series came back, was modernized, given to the right hands, AND had GGPO netcode. I feel like it would kill in today's fighting game market.

I remember the first time I did an Ultra Combo (I think that’s what it was called) where I entered the combo and then tossed the controller down like a gangsta while my character did like a 20 or 40 hit combo on screen! My friends were just blown away! I got an 64 for Christmas of 1996 and besides Mario I believe I also got “Killer Instinct Gold” also. Given that fact, I didn't have anything to compare the home console versions to. I had the first one on my SNES and I really enjoyed it. I bought KI Gold with my N64 back in 1996 and enjoyed that version despite its alterations and flaws. It was a great game for as long as I had it. I remember being bummed as a kid because I didn't like fighting games and that's all my friends wanted to play when I visited their home, and they only talked about Killer Instinct in the schoolyard.
