The employees at Capcom were such big fans of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders that they based Guile's look on Polnareff (with additional hair influence from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendancy's Stroheim). Guile's name is even a JoJo reference to Polnareff's arch nemesis, "J. Geil", the man with two right hands who murdered Polnareff's younger sister.
Rose is also inspired by Lisa Lisa and in Street Fighter 5 it is said "Powerful fighters are drawn to each other" which to me sounds very similar to "Stand users attract other stand users" although the last one is probably a coincidence
I would argue that JoJo has gained tremendous popularity in the west -- however, this has only occurred over the last 2 or 3 years. You'll find JoJo references pretty much every where on the internet now. It would be nice to see Capcom attempt to capitalize on this.
The JoJo license is unfortunately not in Capcom's hands anymore, as it now belongs to CyberConnect2 (who are famous for making a billion half-assed Naruto games). They're working on a new JoJo arcade game called Last Survivor. It's a Battle Royale game that honestly looks pretty fun. They haven't said if it'll eventually get a PC/console port, though.
JoJo is extremely popular in the West now. And theres a new, manga accurate show too. And the game you showed briefly that used 3d models is pretty much a spiritual successor to what Capcom did.
Is it just me, or is there something inherently satisfying about hearing a basic explanation of a plot that you are up to speed with by someone that under most circumstances would never touch upon it?

Seeing as how Street Fighter had been influenced by JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, (Dhalsim's stretchy limbs are based on the Zoom Punch technique taught to Jonathan by Zeppelli, and Guile is basically Polnareff with Stroheim's hair design-wise) I think it was only right that Capcom should get the opportunity to make the first ever JoJo fighting game.
Also note that Rose is exactly a Lisa Lisa re-skin. ;) Not to mention KoF series where benimaru was even reffered to as 'Polnareff' himself by SNK dev team, plus the overall aesthetics of the protagonist japanese team (Polnareff + a japanese high school 'badass' protagonist). Like Hokuto no Ken, Jojo keep getting referenced over and over in japanese pop culture, especially design wise, which I think of being as the main strenght of Mr Araki as a Manga author.
O H M Y G O D ! ! I love the Jojo franchise and Heritage for the Future is the best Jojo game in the franchise and I wish we could get a version of the game with characters from all 8 current parts that would be awesome!

One of my biggest regrets in the PS3 was that I missed the opportunity to buy JoJo's Bizarre Adventure HD. On the other hand, I made it up by getting JoJo's Bizarre Adventures Allstar Battle. It has lots of nods to the Capcom Arcade and it's filled to the brim with references to the manga in every frame..
Honestly Red Earth and SF 3 had the most fluid 2d animations and SF 3 was my fave street fighter game for a long time b4 SF 4 came out. It stayed in my dreamcast and me and my buddies would have a blast playin each other while sittin on the couch. I played it so much that i could counter block every move sumtimes and they never used that system again to my knowledge. Great vid kind sir!!
I see you managed to discover this title. It's a game that has gotten more attention thanks to the 2014 anime adaptation. Trouble is, the HD Version you mentioned has since been delisted, so unless you become a pirate, there's no legit way to play that version, and the PlayStation and Dreamcast ports are now expensive to buy. At least we have MAME. As a reader of Jojo, I'm happy you did your homework on the series even if you didn't know much about Jojo the manga/anime, you did well summarising the first three arcs, and I know you're not the kind of person to read manga or watch anime, which is fine. So all and all, great video, and thanks for doing the game and series justice.
The fact that Namco’s Tekken and Capcom’s Street Fighter took inspiration from JoJo just goes to show the influence of the manga series. Not to mention the fact that HFTF still has an active tournament scene on Fightcade.
One thing I loved from the dreamcast version was the Comic book character select screen, where you pick from the character thumbnails, normally fighter select screens are super dull but was cool to see them doing something a bit special!
Interesting, the anime at the time had a very crazy history. Super Techno Arts imploded before they could fully adapt the firsts three chapters to animation.
I always wondered if there was an older Jojo's anime. Thanks for answering one of my long wondered questions, including clips to boot. I appreciate it! Wonderful video as always THGM. YEEEAAAHHH!!! :)
I loved this game more than i thought i would. First time i heard of this was when i was 13 and of course i didnt bother t look at it. Someone i use to speak to in high school told me that I should check out the Jojo series since im very deep into martial arts. So i did eventually take up that offer when the reboot anime came out back in (1 think) 2015 or 16. Loved the anime and i would DEFINITELY love to watch the 1993 anime adaptation. Watching the show made me want to look at the game and honestly, I fell in love with both Jojo games. I especially appreciate the "To be continued" arrow screen is in there as well, since its a famous internet meme now. Another good thing about Jojo, Jotaro Kujo inspired many characters such as Bahn from Fighting Vipers and Daidouji from Senran Kagura.
I really love the aesthetic of games like this and the more detailed pixel graphics ones (eg. BoF 3) even today. JoJo also has those awfully good looking dudes. I remember when I played my first 3D game, Final Fantasy 7. It felt so wrong! Suddenly you could move everywhere. My 2D brain had a really hard time to adapt xD Back then we thought those 3D games looked awesome. Today we have lifelike characters in games like God of War 3. Unbelievable.

A small correction - JoJo has actually become quite successful in the West in recent years after the animated adaptation that began in 2011, you can tell by the sheer amount of terrible and annoying memes being constantly posted about it.
Yeah, it gets confusing. Part of it is the real world history. Part 3 released and was set in the late 1980s. Around the time this game released, I _think_ the OVAs baded on the _second_ half of Stardust Crusaders had recently released. IIRC budget restrictions meant they jump directly to the last half in case that was all they could do. The first half wasn't made or released until years later, so they were pretty much right. Oh, and while they ate anime, it gets referred to as an OVA (original animation video?) because _that_ JJBA was direct-to-video, not airing on TV. Not enough difference to matter to most.
This and ggx and the sf3 series along with snk, mvc, sc and doa were the best years of fighting games man wish we would get a Dreamcast mini with all these and tech romancer
This game was ahead of it's time. It's a shame Capcom didn't explore more shonen jump titles for fighting games. Could you imagine a Shonen jump vs Capcom. With Goku and Ryu doing both hadoken and a Kamehameha wave in a game trailer or something. That would've been insane.

You thought you were going to be watching a Top Hat Gaming video but you're watching me DIO!
I would love to hear you cover the "dead or alive series"
This game is the reason why I started reading the Manga
I just started playing this game!
been dying to try this, how you playin??
@@sleepalaska I got a arcade emulator called MAME4DROID that allows me to play arcade games on my phone. I then went to google and found a working rom for the game. Next I went and put the game in my roms folder and then started up the app and then played the game
Why the hell wasn't I already subbed to your channel? It's great, I love all the videos I've seen.
Don't worry, I corrected it.
This video gives me STANDO POWAH
15:00 "the Jojo anime has never been exactly popular in the west"
...yeah...
I need a remaster of the remaster of this one!
Also Ora Ora Ora Ora Ora Ora
Glad you finally got to this game. Was curious if you'd go over the source material and it looks like you did.
It has one of the best story mode for fighting game, especially if you've read the comics.
I own this game on ps1 and dreamcast and I just started watching the anime. I think capcom should ha e kept the property rights. I never played the newer versions of jojo .
i remember playing this game and not knowing much about the source material. The most I saw was some clips on public access television. Its more recently I saw the anime series when it finally got a dub. Its kind of funny they dropped the hamon stuff for stands pretty fast.

A small correction - JoJo has actually become quite successful in the West in recent years after the animated adaptation that began in 2011, you can tell by the sheer amount of terrible and annoying memes being constantly posted about it.
I guess he meant when this game was launched.
Not enough difference to matter to most.
me when i see a rock:hahaha jojo reference 😂😂😂
This and ggx and the sf3 series along with snk, mvc, sc and doa were the best years of fighting games man wish we would get a Dreamcast mini with all these and tech romancer
Love Jojo's and Love this game. Would be down for Capcom to expand and make a followup that includes other parts.
A Part 4 fighter would be sick
"Sailor Bloody Moon" loool sillybilly X)~~
This game was my introduction to Jojo.
All hail our lord and savior Hirohiko Araki
This game was ahead of it's time. It's a shame Capcom didn't explore more shonen jump titles for fighting games. Could you imagine a Shonen jump vs Capcom. With Goku and Ryu doing both hadoken and a Kamehameha wave in a game trailer or something. That would've been insane.
Is THIS a Jojo reference?
No. Go away
@CometRuVir No, THIS is a word. Dio's Stand is The World. That is a Jojo reference.
@CometRuVir I'm going to approach you from the reverse direction....away from you.
This just reminded me to go watch the TV series.
When I first played this game I was getting SNK vibes probably because of how the characters looked.
I know it's been said a thousand times before, but the 2d games of the mid to late 90s still look awesome in comparison to the early 3d ones.
You could try and check out obscure fighting games such as Boss Rush games like Monster Maulers, Red Earth and Metamoquester.
Not to mention Mega Man: The Power Battle and Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters.
The PS1 version of this game cost me $147. Am I crazy? Yes. Do I regret my purchase? Hell no
Also you should cover All-Star Battle. It received a 40/40 and they've only ever given one other game that score if I remember correctly.
It had bigger sales than Sf4. And even before Stand parts come in the new anime.
Weird brother but an awesome one
Weird brother who's just a beheaded head but he's still going to kill you and then attach himself to your body and then chill out in a hidden chamber of a coffin at the bottom of the ocean for a while but whatever WRYYYYYYYY!
We create this Game as a Gateway to JJBA, as much as SMBMelee was credited on Introducing Fire Emblem.
While we're doing licensed ones, we should cover the Fist of the North Star fighting game by the guys who did Guilty Gear, or Gundam Endless Duel
I Remember playing this on Ps and thinking, if Jojo can be ported to PS, maybe Street Fighter III can be ported. Sadly it's a wishful thinking ha ha
Back then, Part 3 was the only one to be animated as well.
STAND NAME: TOPU HATO
IT HAS THE SPIRIT OF SPEEDWAGON AND SOME GIMMICKS WITH THE HAT.
I've had a cps3 arcade machine for years just for SF3 and this game was on it, I've always wondered what the story was behind it
