Double dragon II for the NES is one of the best beat'em ups sequels and ports ever made, after all figthing to resurrect marion is a better motivation than avenging her death.

After finding out from the original Double Dragon 2's storyline left me with alot of questions on why they changed the nes version to resurrect her. Probably Nintendo's doing but then again some games change their storylines to create an alternate universe of the games.

Oh, what I meant was *Double Dragon II: Wander of The Dragons* which is a 2013 beat ' em up reboot developed by Korean studio Gravity and published by Barunson Creative.
That game is the worst one of all DD games.
It was a shocking moment in my young life, when I was stood in an arcade in Whitley Bay and saw Marion getting gunned down for the first time. It was on my mind all day.

Absolutely LOVED the NES version of DD2...except those horrendous platforming segments. I personally never saw the arcade versions of the trilogy in my youth but played the hell out of the NES ones, especially DD2.
Great review, I really love the NES version because the game had a lot more some stages than the arcade game. The game reminds me of the NES TMNT the arcade game that also had more than the arcade game as well. What was most memorable about the game was the powerful flying knee attack that the arcade game didn't have. The flying knee attack was so powerful that the move would send enemies flying the screen and killing them quickly. I remember the move was always tricky to pull off from the very moment you land from either a cyclone kick or a jump and makes a unique sound effect. Keep them reviews going 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Killing the final enemy with the knee while he does his handstand attack is so satisfying!

This was the game that made me love my FamiCom more. The "helicopter kick", the "flying knee" attack, awesome. Yeeaahhh!!

I remember having real issues trying to play this game in the arcades in Blackpool due to the control system. However, once you got to know it, the gameplay was really underrated. The Amiga port remains one of my all time favourite conversions, and the NES version is without a doubt the best example of the genre on the system.
Same, I first played this upstairs in a Afan shopping centre in port talbot and had a shock at the backwards kicks.
without a doubt my favorite version of DD2 has always been the nes port but the PC Engine is a close second.
Love the franchise and basically played every DD game out there and all I can say is ... Double Dragon 2 for the NES is the BEST of them All!!
Till today, you hear the "Ultra Knee" sound in River City Girls, along with all the DD cameos. Amazing how DD was based off of Kunio games, and now it returns the favor.
When I was a kid, Double Dragon II : The Revenge Arcade and NES videogame was my favorite. I still love this videogame even in the year, 2020.
Despite being super into arcades back in the 80/90 at UK seasides I never saw the Double Dragon 2 arcade unit, just the first one. My experience with this game was on NES and it was one of the best games on the system.

I play this game a lot in the arcade back in the 80's, and now with a collection disc it is still fun to play to this day. love the game except for the third game. That really sucked!

I had DDII on the Commodore 64, my brother and I had to fight to see who would get to use the joystick and who would have to use the keyboard! 😆

... so underrated. Best gameplay of any version. Only the SNES DD game comes close.
Man, I had a real flow in Double Dragon Advance. The moveset was so varied in that version.
DDA is easily the best DD game ever made. I would say it compares to the Final Fight and Streets of Rage games in quality, something that I don't think can be said about any of the original games.

Never played this game back in the day, and only recently tried to play it. For some reason I can't wrap my head around the directional attack buttons... Definitely want to hear your take on the rest of the series!

The NES version ain't too bad, but the arcade version is a serious dumpster fire.

People will have fun knowing how 3 on the NES was unbearably hard and that the arcade version introduced proto microtransactions

I wouldn't say that DDII had more influence than the original. It certainly influenced Final Fight as that's well documented, but it was Final Fight itself which influenced Streets of Rage. The first DD game is still far more fondly remembered.
The NES version was the best. Techno’s got it right. Everyone else didn’t know what the fuck they were doing

I remember as a kid waching the arcade of double dragon 2 and was blown away at how fast everything moved
After seeing the original arcade version's ending left me with a sense of confusion because I only got ths chance to play the nes version because where I lived, I only knew of the first Double Dragon arcade, leaving me to wonder why the nes version changed Marrion's death to an angel's resurrection but never explaining it. But either way I still enjoyed it. Thanks for the video.

They're not difficult. They just go against every bit of muscle memory that instinctively have been built into reflexes acquired by a control scheme that spans all of the rest of the franchise and ultimately the genre. It's like going out on a basketball court and having the ref tell you that you HAVE TO use a soccer ball instead, that day only. Sure, you can do it, but there are going to be people who won't strictly out of principle.

my 2nd NES game owned after Mario. Loved this game using the OP knee attack and hurricane kick. As a kid though I couldn't get pass the shadow temple with the platforming... definitely my fav double dragon.

Loved and Played DOUBLE DRAGON 1/2 a lot in the arcades back in the good old days growing up. I also have good memories when dad got me Double Dragon 1 for my Sega Master System it was one of my first Master System game 👍

Double Dragon II The Revenge is easily a top 25 NES game. One of the best for sure. You could solo play mode B by beating up your brother for extra lives. Haha

I see what you did there . I'm Absolutely loving this content ! DD II is so pretty ! Very nice graphics colours & music, a very nice looking Arcade game and my favourite all time NES game ! Please do videos for Double Dragon III , Super Double Dragon on SNES & Double Dragon on GBA , I Can't wait to see more content for this ! Also, Super DD on SNES has a very interesting back story with the development & final version as the the game released incomplete, No Story, an unfinished ending & extra stages & cut scenes left out !
Watching those clips and sounds of DD2 on the NES created a Pavlovian response to how my childhood felt. Amazing! Like a time machine for feelings!

Time for my weekly proclamation! The 3 BEST beat em ups on NES are Double Dragon II, River City Ransom, and Battletoads & Double Dragon. Change my mind!
Mighty Final Fight was a disappointment. Although the game is worth looking at, it's disqualification from the 3 BEST has been justified in the comment section of the Daddy Top Hat Might Final Fight review video (specifically in my comment). ;^)

Every happy kid growing up in the late 80’s hold a special place in their hearts for the first 2 Double Dragons. The 3rd one was a major disappointment, specially at the arcades.
I remember when I 1st played this game at a pizza shop when I was 6 or 7yrs old and it was one of the greatest and hardest games I ever played never could get off the 1stage in the arcade version but I must have ended the game 100 times on the NES...i would damn near play this game everyday great times!!!!
IMO this was and still is the best game in the entire series and the ending is a perfect conclusion to a hyper violent beat em up.
A live action movie that is basically John Wick meets The Warriors meets the purge should made and it would be awesome. Basically have the entire movie play out just like the action beat 'em up did. Except this time you have the 2 brothers chase a street gang that kidnaps the older brother's girlfriend in the middle of a citywide riot. This would justify why there is literal fighting taking place everywhere they go that night. It would be awesome. You can even have crossover Easter Eggs like say the events of Streets of Rage can be happening at the same time in other parts of the city. I'd watch that movie. Especially if Billy and Jimmy Lee had sweet double team moves.
I always pictured a Double Dragon action-blockbuster that look like Escape from New York fused with Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story.
With a scripts based on DD1's Japan version of the story, and DD2's US version of the story.
The giant sunglasses guys are basically Andre the giant which makes sense since Technos did WWF Superstars arcade in 1989.

Totally underrated game. Specially by the newer generations that grow up watching AVGN...
The origional 1987 Double Dragon released in the arcades was just a better experience. The graphics, the music, the game play was just better. The whole aura of DD 1 was better then DD2!
Am I the only one that was freaked out by the phrase "ascending downwards"? I had to rewind it and watch with the captions on to make sure.

Double Dragon 2 is not a sequel...
It's a remake of "Double Dragon 1" that follows its own story and development. The last boss is your own desire of revenge. This was confirmed to me by Kishimoto himself when he came to a classic arcade convention in my town. He did this in order for you to go back and play the Double Dragon original arcade for a more happy ending. A strange choice but there wasn't a Double Dragon 3 planned yet. When the Hollywood movie came out, Technos (the cheap bastards that they were) gave him the same budget of DD1 to make a 3rd game but it sucked.

NES DD2 is hands down the 2nd best DD or any beat-em up game in history. It has EVERYTHING that makes it good. Only DD Advance would beat it with even better gameplay with fantastic graphics.

10:04 I thought the name of the boss who shot Marian was Roper. A character who looks like this is a boss in Battletoads and Double Dragon and he's introduced as Roper there.
So Marion never died? lol. that confused the hell out of me. Now I understand why DD2 looked the same as the 1st. Didn't know it was not originally intended as a sequel until later in development. I wish DD3 would had stick with the original formula as the previous. Great history and video.
My 1st beat em up and we would complete it then play it over and over. The days without Internet.
My favorite Double Dragon!! Being able to play co-OP in this game made for many hours of enjoyment with family and friends. The NES version was really great.

when i was a kid i used to play the first DD after school, i played it so much (together with a class mate) that we were able to finish it with one coin (each).
when DDII came out i was very exited about it, tried it a couple of times and never played it again.

Double Dragon 2 was the perfect follow up to its father.
I don't agree, I think it was a lame follow up. Final Fight was essentially the game that DD 2 should have been. The Technos brawlers in general were kind of weak compared to the ones Capcom and Konami started to put out.

I think I only saw a Double Dragon machine, maybe II, once in my entire life out in the wild. I was far more familiar with the NES versions.

The NES version is one of the very first console games I've ever played. It's archaic, but holds up extremely well today.

Still can't get used to the controller for this game. I prefer using direction button to determine my punches and kicks. However no doubt its one of the best of the classic DD series.
NES is my personal favorite version. The only other one I'd be itching to try is the Japanese '93 PC engine port.

Double Dragon 2 was not the monster hit the 1st one & Final Fight was in the arcades. At least not here in the UK. Every fish & chip shop seemed to have a Double Dragon 1 in it when it came out, then later the same with Final Fight. Double Dragon 2 was rarer. The first Turtles was the other monster arcade beat em up back in the day but you would mainly see it in proper arcades (not fish & chip shops etc).
