Motorcycle Auto Tracking With Drones-DJI Mavic vs. Skydio

  • Understand that there is no perfect camera, drone, or tool for filmmaking or even for a hobbyist who just wants some basic shots. The drone or tools you choose will have to fit your particular needs. To get great cinematic shots you really must fly your drone manually so you can frame the exact shots you want and perform the maneuvers you want. No autonomous drone will get the same shots you can manually. If you think you're just going to go buy an autonomous featured drone and auto-track your motorcycle and get great shots then your sadly mistaken. One big drawback to using auto-tracking is that you don't have manual control over your camera settings and you must rely on the auto features. I'm not a big fan of that.

    Hey Ryan, really awesome video. I think this is the most complete comparison of DJI Active Track vs Motion Track that there is. You're incredibly well informed, I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into understanding how Skydio 2 works.
    Looks like at 22:14 Skydio 2 might not have had enough time to acquire sufficient GPS signal. In this situation, you can either manually pilot it back to you like you did, or hit the Home button on the app to return to launch point or return to phone. Similarly at 23:04, if you lose GPS signal as well as visual tracking, Skydio 2 will hover in place until it regains GPS signal, in which case it will perform an RTH.
    Again, awesome commentary and footage. My favorite shot is 24:25.

    I love my Mavic Air 2 and have owned 7 DJI drones. They make great products and I prefer the control and high-quality video they offer. However, for anything requiring autonomous flight and tracking, I still with my Skydio 2 (with beacon). It's a totally different technology and years ahead of DJI's optical tracking (as good as it is).

    I'm new to flying drones and have been flying the older Mavic Pro for about eight months. This is the first video I've seen that shows the deficiencies of Active Tracking with DJI. I have an old speed boat and I tried to have the Mavic follow me using Active Track. It seems to stop for no reason sometimes, and I have to manually have it catch back up Andre lock on the boat. At least now I know that it is a general weakness with Mavics. Thank you.

    Ryan, great video. I have Mavic Zoom, Skydio 2 and have just got the Mavic FPV. All three have their own strengths and definitely their weaknesses. Skydio is great at tracking but that little guy just dances when not busy, it’s like it gets bored; weird little thing. It is also so much louder than any drone I’ve ever flown. The fpv is just amazing manual footage, at speeds just not previously possible. As far as photos and the dolly zoom, the Mavic Zoom is really amazing. We were going to try the Skydio on the beach, following the bikes but it was too windy and I just didn’t trust it enough to put it up in high wind.

    I'm likely to pick up an Air 2 for the manual control / flight characteristics you identified. However, as a rider I've always been intrigued by the option of tracking while riding. I can't think of a better way to show how these two platforms attempt/succeed/fail at tracking a bike in motion. Even in some of the tests (and crashes) I also enjoyed the scenes you captured. Even if I shoot with a Mavic most of the time, that Skydio is now on my wish list and I'll be watching for any updates they do to improve their game in other areas.
    Also loved the way you set up the video with your background and experience too. That is so refreshing and absolutely established immediate credibility in my mind. Thanks for a great video.

      I disagree about there being no bias. He repeatedly helped out the Skydio by manually moving it away from obstacles while he did nothing whatsoever to help the Mavic. His comments make it clear he had a low opinion of the Mavic's ability to perform from the very beginning.
      Also, he's comparing the one and only thing the Skydio is made to do, and for which it has specialized hardware the Mavic doesn't have, to a value-added feature on the Mavic that isn't part of its core mission. The comparison would have been more fair if he had not used the Skydio's beacon.
      That said, I would still expect the Skydio to best the Mavic in this situation even without the beacon. I mean, was there ever any doubt that it would? Skydio is really good at the autonomous stuff while DJI is... not so much. I can't recommend anyone trust DJI's "intelligent" flight modes.

Drove my truck with the beacon on the console. S2 was flawless, even flying backwards at 25 MPH while dodging trees, wires and poles. I didn't know how ninja it as until I viewed the footage. Like I mentioned on another users video of the Skydio - this looks like GPS errors. I don’t own this drone but I would suggest before entering areas of high density of objects (tress etc.), is to acquire a firm gps lock on the beacon and the phone FIRST, then slowly enter the areas with obstacles. This won’t guarantee consistent lock because while you’re ‘in the obstacle zone’ the GPS signals will be bouncing off all the obstacle causing GPS timing errors and your drone will only do what it’s told by the received GPS data. So, that’s my best guess on this issue .. all devices that use GPS are subject to this (which is why there augmented system to correct for these timing errors.. but this is not an exact science because any given environment is infinitely different and complex). Even in open spaces GPS geometry is constantly changing adding to the problem. Thanks for the video though, still quite impressive!

    I 100% agree, I love the flight in manual mode of the DJI mavics, there are a few others that compare and the Altel EVO 2 series is all over DJI but, nothing can compare to the autonomous flight of the Skydio 2. I know the Evo2 has a good auto track flight as well and it’s good but, skydio is on another level.

    wow! this is the drone I have been looking for. I am a cyclist and shoot action drone shot with my DJI mavic air, but I was never able to shoot my action film my self, never it was possible. On top of that DJI mavic air intelligence battery drains battery life slowly over time, I had to throw out several batteries. On top of that its return home function didn't function properly, I ended up losing it yesterday in Saw grass swamp. I did some good video shots with it but I was never satisfied and it wasn't for action shooting at all. It was impossible to do it alone. I am not going to buy DJI mavic air again, so I have been looking for alternatives. This Skydio 2 seems to be the one that I need. Thanks so much for review! It's amazing Skydio 2 followed you on high speed and changed direction of filming while avoiding obstacles by itself. DJI mavic air was never able to do that. I just found out this drone this morning. and It happened to be produced by American company unlike all other drone made in China. Way to go Skydio! I don't think manual control is an option for action video for the safety issue. I want just simple aim and shot automatic control
    just like Gopro is for action camera, not sony heavy weight video camera. Thanks for the review. I am going for Skydio 2. period!

    Bought the Mavic 3 Classic and loved how it flew (manually). Spotlight worked very well. But Active Track (the main reason I needed the drone) made it worthless. Didn't want to lock on me and when it finally did, it lost me within seconds (only moving 7-10 mph on a tractor). Once I got it to follow me and tried moving it from behind to the front. It almost took my head off. Couldn't own a terrible drone like this and returned it. I miss not having a drone.
    Would love to own a Skydio, but they seem to not be in the consumer market anymore. You just can't buy one anywhere.
    Listening to your ending comment between the two, maybe I should have kept the DJI, but would hope the manual flying on the Skydio would improve (and go back on sale when it did).

    I would like to interject on the whole "crashing your drone" thing. There's very good drone simulators out there in just about every platform that allow you to practice drone flying skills without actually crashing them and will give you the muscle memory to be able to operate a drone a bit more proficiently to a point where you don't get "tunnel vision" and focus on the screen alone, if that makes sense.

    Ive seen lots of videos and had personal experience with the buggy ActiveTrack on the DJI Air 2 series. Sometimes I'm even too afraid to use it... With the speeds of the bike, maybe sport mode is the best setting. But I believe that a majority of the Obstacle Avoidance features are disabled. I think this caused a lot of the crashes and lost subject errors. I;d be so frustrated if mine kept running into the GROUND. But again I think its because of the sport mode setting....I've learned that speeding up the video speed in post makes for fast and epic looking shots

    I'm curious where your remote for the Air 2 was while you were riding. I ride with my bicycle sometimes using the trace mode and haven't seen any of the erratic behaviors like you did except when the sticks were being pressed on accident. I figured out I need to take the sticks off and put it in my rack back to be sure they're not getting any accidental input.

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  3 роки тому

      It was not getting any accidental input. Sitting lightly on top inside of tank bag, no sticks on. These tracking issues are not new to DJI. Been dealing with it for many years on many different modes. Thanks for watching.

    I had the same exact experience. The Skydio lost me, hovered, and I had to go back to look for it. Then, later, it was in a hurry to follow in front and crashed into some cables. It didn't break, or anything, but still.

    skydio 2 is amazing for off road biking..it does what it says on the box..you just need to think ahead...pre-visualise your shots..and when you are near trees..don't do a swing around...say from 3 to 9 or vice versa..sudden movements in tricky spaces can cause problems..otherwise this drone has no competition..just need to get the accessories in the store in stock...i keep the beacon attached to the bar using elastic bands :) the phone attached to the tank..gives me double connection..and so easy to make long sweeping shots and you can just ride for 20 mins...two batteries will give you an nicely edited video up to 7 mins..

  • @sbodi4d
    @sbodi4d 4 роки тому +1

    I know you need to edit stuff, but when you do the jump shots with the Skydio it makes me think that it screwed up, and you had to edit it out. I would rather you do constant shots that look bad, rather than cut shots that look good, just saying...

    Skydio need to dev/release a Beacon Plus 2.0 - bigger with 2 precision fold-down joysticks and a much bigger LCD screen

    • @2Meerkats
      @2Meerkats 3 роки тому

      @CrazyJannis44 the Anafi controller is not for me. It is too big. more like the Taranis X-Lite Pro in precision but slightly smaller in size, and with fold down sticks like TBS Tango 2 - but keep the type of LCD used now on the Beacon which i can see with polarised glasses and tinted goggles too.

    At least twice the money with less video features. Skydio is tracking the beacon, not an outline. Huge difference in tech here. If you want creative cinematic videos, the Mavic would be the choice. If you want the best autonomous flying, Skydio is a better choice. The Skydio also has horrible rear detection and will fly into anything big or small. The only downside I can say about the Skydio. I find myself using the 4k/60 and fly my drone for the shots I want. The Skydio will fly around or through the smallest openings without issues. So this video might be a little misleading, I do like most of the content.

    pls do another video to compare times for start(power on) to tracking in secs. including time to start all apps, lock to gps and calibrate mag where needed etc - imo you seemed to be blocking the Skydio GPS beacon antenna with your hand over the lower-base (antenna) a lot of the time? anyway i have spent way to much bike time with dji doing endless MAG calibrations near a motorbike/car ( not shown) and dji requires a constant dismount and 360 dance with dji mags - ever few miles for consecutive shoots or pilot resorts to roadside dirt take offs with fod - dji's inability to store previous flights data for mag calibration in the same mag-geological zone.

    Cool comparison, i have talked with a few different drone pilots. Some like the DJI for the light weight and no license needed. Some like the skydio for the follow me settings. I ride dual sport and dirt bike year round and want to get a drone. How about in the trees on a single track, tight and twisty ?

    I'm very impressed with the Skydio. Imagine a Skydio 3,4 or 5. Imagine how much better it can get. DJi never perfected their product within a few years. It has taken DJi nearly a decade to get to where it is with it's current flagship drones. Imagine Skydio in another 5 years.

    Try using the Skydio 2 motion tracking without the beacon and tell us how well it tracks because the beacon provides a radio beam target for the drone to follow while the DJI Mavic Air 2 has to track visually only and that is much harder. I wonder if the Skydio 2 will offer the same results or at least closer results why using only visual tracking. Don’t forget the Mavic drones are made for aerial photography in as many modes as possible while Skydio 2 was really made to track a target and not very much more, basically it’s a very expensive selfie camera.

    Great review! I wish the Skydio's were available in Australia to consumers, but I found the same issues with Mavic Air 2 losing track, going off wildly etc - I actually had a DJI Spark years ago and it was 10x better than the Mavic Air at follow mode. I suppose our best hope now is to wait and see how the Mavic 3 has progressed active track once they release the software in Jan 22'!
