Mavic Air 2 vs Skydio 2: Which Drone is Right For You?

- Опубліковано 17 тра 2020
- The Mavic Air 2 was released from DJI and so I took it out to the wilderness of Alaska to test it's limits. I also really wanted to test and see how the Mavic Air 2 compared to my Skydio 2 when it comes to tracking. Both drones are fantastic but also aimed at slightly different markets. The Skydio is the best drone on the market for filming yourself and not worrying about flying the drone while you do. The Mavic Air 2 is good at filming but requires much more hands on to keep it from hitting obstacles.

Shortly after filming this DJI released an update so you can now use the quick shots (except asteroid) in 4K! Go into the quick shots mode then into the camera menu and you can change them there!!
Updates are great
Yeah buddy!
AND, so did Skydio2 come out with some enhancements...3D and another
Where are you from ?????
Fantastic view
Great video Jake!!! One of your best that I have seen. The beginning clip was EPIC!!!!
Thanks a ton Eddie!
I was literally just thinking yesterday that I wanted to look into getting a drone - great timing! And super helpful. I definitely need obstacle avoidance and to NOT be trying to fly it while I'm doing other stuff.
LOL most of us do. If you have any questions about what drone might fit your needs best definitely let me know and I will help walk you through it!
Bro how tf did u do that... What a great video at the start... literally one of the best drone videos I’ve seen....
Well the number of times I nearly wrecked the drone won't ever be public info lol. Let's just say I did trim a lot of tree branches and grass with it... Thank you for the kind words!
Drones got the best shots hands down
Good review, Jake! Both drones have their own strengths, the SkyDio2 rocks at autonomous tracking..that's huge! very nice that the Mavic Air 2 does 4k/60! Loved your action sequence at the beginning!!
Thanks Mark! Both drones are incredible machines and film great video but they both have very different capabilities when it comes to flying
This is the first review I've ever watched where I had to make popcorn! The intro scene was epic! Awesome work Jake!
LOL Thanks Jake! It was fun to film and I was super excited with how it came together
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Great video Jake! Think I'm gonna have to re-order the MA2 once I get settled in at the campsite. Thanks for sharing
You're welcome! I was so on the fence but after using it I am keeping it and selling my Mavic 2 Pro
Nice review. Have been just flying by controller now but am going to check out the follow features but definitely interesting to hear you say it’s meant to be flown. Also unbelievable backdrop and location to film. Yew
thank you very much! Def give it a shot. I love flying with the controller as well the drone flies like a dream with the controller but when you want to film yourself doing stuff the drone does a great job overall
Thanks for the video Jake....well done and informative
Cheers and thanks!
We went to Tromso, Norway last February 2019, and DJI Mavic Pro 1 was able to withstand -10 degrees although we had to land because wind was too strong. Thank you so much for the two videos on the comparison of equally great drones. I have been a DJI user for quite some time already and the newly released Skydio 2 got me intrigued. Looking forward to more of your videos.
Thank you! Cheers
Espectacular el montaje del principio del vídeo Jake, gran trabajo! 🙌👏👏👏
Gracias!
Great video Jake, some of the best footage I have seen.
Thank you! It was a great day to film and TONS of fun to do that first action sequence. Especially since I wasn't the one running lol. Cheers!
Oh my goodness I’m like 1 min in and this is so good!! Haha love the running. Such amazing shots!
Thanks Foto Finn! It was a blast to film and crazy challenging to do it with out crashing the drone
HOLY CRAP THAT SHORT FILM WITH THE MAVIC AIR 2 WAS PHENOMENAL LOOK LIKE A REAL MOVIE!!
EXCELLENT JOB!!
NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THAT WITH THE DRONE...
THAT ALONE MADE ME SUBSCRIBE!!
Thank you
I enjoyed the video Jake. Very informative, thank you.
You're welcome John!
nice video Jake. i am going out to play with tracking today myself!!!
AWESOME!!! I am going to later today too. I want to try out tracking from the front more. It's def better but still leaves some to be desired compared to Skydio
Just found you today. Great video! I'm just now researching for my solo motorcycle trip around Australia this winter. Now binging all your other videos. New sub n like 👍
Awesome!!
Great video and great scenery. That pretty much clears up which drone I'm buying next. It looks like you're in Seward, Ak. I live in Palmer and work for the Alaska Railroad. I'll have to take a summer trip and find that bear and get some aerial video.
NICE! yep this was shot at Lowell Point on a beautiful day!! I hope you get out on some of the nice days we have this summer with your new drone. Cheers
Hi Jake, just subscribed as I recently bought an AIR 2 S. Great content and an amazing intro on this video. I run a small channel myself and so impressive that you also reply to so many comments. ATB and thank you. Tom
fantastic thanks Tom!
Wow That opening sequence was amazing. At first, I couldn't believe it was all shot on the MA2. I thought you would have cheated with a full frame mirroroless + gimbal for some of the eye- level shots. The 240 fps shot when he is running over the water= amazing.
Such a great comparison. I think I'll get both!
Thank you very much for the kind words! Both are fantastic drones for sure. Enjoy both or one if you decide to get just one lol. Cheers!
Fantastic explanation 👏🏻 right to the point for many questions 👍🏻
Thank you and youre welcome
Always love your videos Jake!
Thanks! I’m so impressed at how the Skydio handles this forest! Stay tuned there is more coming!!
This was one of the best drone videos that I have watched. Being in the market for a drone, I was extremely focused on DJI. This video provided me with a perspective I didnt expect. Although, a price comparison would have been nice. The Skydio product is very expensive. Thanks again for the video. Looked like the West Coast trail you were on.
This is in Alaska but in some places they do look similar! Cheers and thanks for watching!!
If you're still in the market, consider DJI has a very restrictive ecosystem. You can't fly in a lot of places, Autel is a good competitor to DJI. No restrictions, except your wallet.
@@marcusirobinson just curious as to what exactly your referring to about the dji being restrictive compared to others.
Looking to purchase and diving deep into comparisons and reviews etc
@@justinstevenson2061 all their aircraft are controlled by Geofencing, if you live inside a restricted area they won’t unlock the aircraft for flight. No other drone makers have this restrictive software installed with their drones.
@@marcusirobinson awesome thank you for the reply much appreciated.
What would be considered restricted? I’m imagining airports, military bases etc.
Any other examples of restricted areas outside of those types I mentioned?
Crazy, I ordered mine like 1.5 years ago. Been waiting so patiently!
LOL not quite but yeah especially with the lockdowns there has been quite the delay
it is so strange to watch someone from the area make such great videos. haha. killer work man. hope to meet you in person one day! amazing work dude
Thanks a lot! Hopefully we can meet up sometime
that's one heck of a shot!, awesome Jake!
Thank you!
My uses don't require heavy obstacle avoidance, so this clinched it - I'll be getting the Mavic Air 2. AMAZING intro sequence and thorough review, Jake! Keep it up! =D
Thanks Chris! I appreciate that a lot. Cheers
Every single drone should have obstacle avoidance because of its nature of being a drone.
That intro is Epic! Beautiful!
Thank you very much!
Excellent video, and content by a true professional🙂👍
Thank you very much!
Great video. Thanks for the info
You're welcome!
Great review mate . I love my mavic pro 2 and really love the dji smart controller as well . Bulky but so much better than use in my mobile
I have yet to try the smart controller and now I am getting really tempted to especially once this drone is compatible with it...
Unique intro! Keep up the great work man!
Thanks VortexLabs!
Great vid sir. Just recently received my Mavic Air 2. Had not flown it yet but I’m excited to do so. I’ve had my preorder for the Skydio 2 for while but have not received my notice/email that it’s ready. I’m hoping to get it soon I really want to put it through it’s paces.
Awesome have fun with your new drone and the skydio will be worth the wait!!
Well put together👌🤙 definitely looking at skydio to now
It's fantastic and they are starting back up their production line so they will be shipping orders again soon
Bruh the intro was Soo good reminded me of the flash that was amazing!!
Thank you!
Jake, that intro! So cool! I was pretty much sold on the Air 2, but now you've given me something to really think about. Considering that I've never flown a drone, would the Skydio 2 be a good drone for a total beginner? I like what you said about the Skydio 2 being market for filming yourself and not worrying about flying the drone while you do, as we'll have the kids with us while we travel and shoot.
Well the Skydio is def the easiest drone to film yourself with! However also consider the Skydio is going to run you about 1200-1300 total with quite a wait while they get their production line back up and running after the shut down. The Mavic Air 2 is still able to film you very well but is def not "set it and forget it" like the skydio is. BUT it will run you about 800 to 1000 for the drone or fly more package (which I highly recommend) and you'll get it in 2-3 weeks from now. Also if you plan to film in low light at all then the Mavic is the way to go
@@JakeSloan Thanks for that, Jake. The Skydio website says, "Skydio 2 is not currently certified for use outside of the US and Canada." As an international traveling family, I'm trying to gauge if that's a big deal or not. Would that imply that the DJI is somehow "certified" to fly outside of the US? Thanks again.
It simply means that the Skydio is not certified to be sold outside the US yet. It will operate outside the us no problem though. there are a handful of people in various parts of the world that already have one through other channels etc
Fantastic comparison! Thank you Jake. Seems to me they're very different. Get the Skydio if you want a smart camera assistant. Get the Mavic Air 2 if you want an extra camera that flies really well.
Exactly right! Thanks Jon
Great review , thank you
Thanks!
Great video comparison! I just purchased the Air 2 as a first time drone owner as I’m eager to fly! I will definitely buy a Skydio 2 once available in the market.
Both great drones but for very different uses! Congrats
Jake that intro was KILLER!
Thank you!
Good review guys Thanks
Thanks!
Great review. I've had my Skydio 2 in the UK now for 8 months and just love it. The most useful mode I use is Cable cam, though I wish it had more waypoints than just flying from A to B.
Agreed!!
How did you get your skydio 2 as it's not for sale to the UK or Europe.
Same question. How did you buy it in UK please?
Great information! I subscribed and I’m listening to a lot of this stuff. I had a question about the camera lens. Is there a way to add a Polaroid lens cover to the camera so I could find fish? Or do I even need to do that? Thanks
Thanks Steve! There is: Freewell makes fantastic filters for both he Skydio and Mavic Air 2. They offer polarized and non polarized filters. Check them out! There is a link in the description of this video too 😉
Man I really want one of these things. Freaking amazing video bro
Thanks Terry!!! Careful it's a slippery slope lol.
VERY HONEST REVIEW,, You did a very good job.. thanks
Thank you
Great info I have a preorder batch 3 for a Skydio2 and since MavAir2 released been debating on canceling my preorder for mav. But I think I’ll keep it and wait on skydio to get back to work.
If you already have an order in I’d def keep your spot in line
Great comparison of these two drones. I also have both drones and I really like both of them. But I must say the Skydio 2 isn’t for everyone.
Absolutely the Skydio is a very specific drone that fills a certain need but it does it better than any other drone!
Thanks Jake nice content
Thank you and you're welcome!
NIce comparison. Kudos to your buddies running skills!
Thanks Chris! he was fast and made it a challenge to film him running in the woods
That was an amazing intro!!!
Thank you!
We filmed with the MA2 today at minus 12 in the Swiss alps. It did stunningly well!
Fantastic!!
Great video! Attention grabbing into and lots of good information.
Two questions: 1. Which of these two cameras is better (dynamic range, colors, pixel bunching, etc.)? 2. What advantages are there to producing in 24 fps for action shots (vs. 30 or 60)?
They are extremely close on cameras. I'd say pretty much the same on dynamic range overall with the slight edge going to the Mavic Air in lower light. The Mavic Air 2 also offers a flat color profile to give a little more flexibility to grade in post. I always shoot in 24 unless I plan to manipulate the speed later like in the running through the water clip.
WOW... man this intro blown our mind 😎 killer review 💪 now I want to have all of them 4 sure despite the small space in my bag 😁 Jake thumbs up, keep growing and see ya at our travel chanel 👍👍 you are more than welcome to come by and express your feelings about it 🤩
Thank you very much!
Awesome footage and comparison!
Thanks John K
Too much candy in the candy store & not enough quarters in my pocket. 😂 Great review Jake! I would have gotten a runner too. That dude was fast, I guess all the slow runners have been weeded out by the Bears. 🤔
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA there is a saying here when we go hiking: "make sure you aren't the slowest runner in the group 😜. Thanks a lot!
Great real user experience information. I was on a new decision path if I should cancel my Skydio 2 (Batch # 3 order) and get the new DJI MA2 but I do not see what advantage the MA2 has over my other DJI drones except for a smaller transport package. Your video has convinced me to keep the Skydio 2 order as it is a drone that can perform missions the DJI drones still have yet to perfect. That would be flying autonomous missions of active subjects while operation in a dense obstacle environment like a trail in the woods. An "Action Camera Drone" is how I would classify the Skydio2 . Nice job explaining , thanks.
You're welcome and I am glad I could help you make a decision! Cheers
The MA2 arrives tomorrow and now you have convinced me to get the Skydio 2! Can never have enough drones.
Awesome Budd and you're right when asked how many drones do you need the answer is always just one more... lol Cheers
Adapted from the Rules of the Velominati (Keepers of the Cog):
RULE 12:
The minimum number of [DRONES] one should own is three. The correct number is n+1, where n is the number of [DRONES] currently owned. This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of [DRONES] owned that would result in separation from your partner.
Thank you for perhaps the best intro video ever. Can you please share the location. P.S. I got the MA2 fly more combo (my first drone ever) and love it. I was on the Skydio, batch 2 list and then production shutdown because of covid19. Now I’m going to watch your intro again. 👍🏽
Thank you Keith! This was all shot at Lowell Point in Seward Alaska. I totally understand on the Skydio. I hope they get back up and producing soon. really both of these drones are fantastic and either one will produce excellent video and photos. Cheers and enjoy the intro as often as you like 😜
Jake, I watched this video yesterday and it has bugged me to no end all through the night and today. WHICH ONE? There is obviously only one solution to that question. Own both. What drone is best for creativity? Now that question is answered, both of these. Thank you for your time and effort. I have not seen a better presentation of either drone of what they can do and what they are best for.
Of course own both is the best solution lol! thank you so much for the kind words! Cheers
Which one? We'll that's easy, there is only one you can actually walk into a store and buy. The other is vaporware
Great opening shots!
Thank you!
Great review. I'm torn. On one hand, I like being able to manually control my drone to take pictures. But on the other hand, I can see myself using it to follow me around on bike rides and hikes. I read somewhere that the Skydio won't even take off if the light is bad? Is that true? I'm also curious what kind of take off restrictions it has compared to DJI (which has half of Orange County, CA, where I live, blocked).
It’s true that Skydio will not fly in low light at all. For many people that’s a deal breaker.
Fab vid, been waiting for someone to show how dynamic action can be captured by hobbyist drones.
Cheers!
Really well done video.
Thanks!
Seward or Cordova? I can’t figure it out, but looked like Kenai Lake at one point :)
Great stuff, just got my Skydio and look forward to some Onewheel/skiing action with it, also psyched to hear how cold you used it in, just subscribed 🤟
Seward! have fun with the new drone!! Cheers
So amazing. Subbed!
Thanks for the sub!
Awesome review ...
Question... What is the mic like and background noise from the drone itself.... Obviously the birds chirping and stuff at the beginning was an overlay.....lol
the drone noise is very quiet I can have it hover 20 feet away and record using my Deity D3 Pro easily
Awesome comparison 🔥🚁
Thanks
Planning on doing some shots for real estate and action shots as well as just exploring my area. I saw the new update for the Skydio 2 includes roof scanning and increased range? Would you recommend the Skydio 2 as being a rather versatile drone like the MA2 or does it just fill that active track niche nicely. Beginner here. Thanks!
The Skydio will work for that but it still doesnt have the range of the Mavic Air 2. I've used mine for filming a couple of commercial Gigs and it has worked great with the remote but it's all fairly close range
Hi Jake, Big time sailor and was wondering how easy would it be to bring the Skydio back to a moving sailboat? Great video also!
I think it would be quite difficult. The down side of the skydio is hand catching while moving is very difficult. I would look more to getting something like a phantom 4 pro 2.0 for that. Since it has legs it makes it MUCH easier to grab while you are in motion. Cheers!
The new firmware update already fixed the Quick Shots 1080p limitation. Very nice to see.
I'm also much happier with the new controller, although I wish it had a better feel in the hand. Don't mind the size at all.
yes it did!!!
Can’t wait to get my skydio2. I know it’s gonna take a while before skydio ship them but I must say I’m really getting impatient yet super excited already!!!
Nice
Thank you for the review! Now really want to buy Skydio 2 but they do not have them available... Where did you purchase it and how fast it arrived?
For me it was fairly fast because I was among the first to order. But with the current shit downs etc it has made things very slow
Ohh great ! Thank you for the video !
You are welcome!
great video thanks. Can the skydio follow a vehicle? Did I hear you say it follows a beacon? can that be mounted outside a vehicle?
The skydio will do that but Skydio also recognizes a vehicle as something that it should follow the same way it recognizes people.
Great video thank you
You're welcome!
Good job of filming and reviewing!🤓
Thanks!
Great video,thank you
Thanks!
Amazing Video there, Jake! I just got my Skydio 2 - the plan is to have it follow me when I fly Paramotor. First impressions will be recorded in 2 days. The only real downside for me is that shorter Battery Life. I wish it had at least 30 min... Those 10 minutes more would really make a big difference. And I wonder why there is such a big difference in flying-time between the two.
For those interested. I tested the Mavic 2 Pro with flying after me... Forget it. That thing loses me as soon as I lift up because contrast and background changes and it just hovers in the air not knowing where I am. The Beacon on the Skydio 2 will certainly do that much easier. But I can't fly as long due to the Battery ;-)
And another thing... The Mavic 2 Pro I had could not do 4K in 60 Fps... Has this been fixed with a Firmware Update? Or is it only the new Air 2 that can do 4K60? Cause that was also a big selling point for me in regards to the Skydio 2... The smooth 60 Fps.
One thing I wonder - and maybe you can help me with that - is the HDR on theSkydio 2. Just tested it today in bright conditions. HDR does seem to make things less sharp outside of the center of the screen. And it also over-saturates sometimes green fields etc. Also I have the ND Filter Pack but I really don't know which one I favor. Got any advise there maybe?
Greetings,
Really loved that video of yours!
overall I find I prefer non HDR footage, The Mavic 2 pro will likely not have 60fps footage due to hardware limitations, hopefully in the mavic 3... Cheers and thanks for watching!!
Great video!
Thanks!
Hi Jake great video, I am looking for something like Skydio 2, but under 250 grams. Do you know what would be my best choice in a drone that could follow me while I hike to places just like this drone with obstacle avoidance as such?
There is nothing under 250 that will do anything like the skydio. The only drone right now under 250 is the Mini 1 and mini 2 but neither have obstacle avoidance and in some cases will not track you
@@JakeSloanThank you kindly. Wish I could've found one. Reason I wanted something under 250grams is because you have to obtain an aviation certificate in my area for anything above 250, which is not difficult at all, but all types of law and regulations apply, which I don't want to deal with. Plus a nice and compact drone is easier to carry around.
I learned from you that each time I take a selfie I show my potential as a content creator!
good luck
Hi sorry for the bad english.
Very good movie :) how did you record the sound? You shoot it twice? There is no drone buzzzzz sound. Good job!
I recorded it after each drone flight using this microphone: ua-cam.com/video/IvvENV-_bgE/v-deo.html Thanks and cheers!
Thanks for all your videos. I've never flown a drone. I want to by one of these two I'm pretty sure. I imagine I'll be filming myself sometimes, but I'm looking to start a side business that I can enjoy when I retire in a few years. Which would you recommend or would you suggest I look into a different one entirely? Thanks in advance for your perspective.
I would get the DJI Mavic Air 2 then, you could use it for business early and its a great drone to learn with. if you just want a drone to learn to fly and practice with (while also being able to film yourself) then I'd recommend the Mavic Mini and when you are ready to start doing things for business you can see what's on the market then. Drones are evolving fast! Cheers
@@JakeSloan Thanks for the advice and quick response.
Awesome opener very cool loved all the sound design as well nice job! And very good comparison there I enjoyed the whole video but that’s nothing really new 😁
Thanks Paul! It was a blast to make and the best part was no drones were harmed in the making of it. Came close though 😜
@@JakeSloan That is the best part because it would get expensive fast.
First 45 seconds into this video I CANT BELIEVE this channel has only 33k subs. Videography here is hollywood level
THANK YOU very much!!
Excellent review
Thanks!
well done Jake, very good review, if we could join the strongest features/benefits of Mavic and Skydio 2 - it would be the perfect one ;-) rgds from Poland, take care!
Yes absolutely it would be! Cheers!!
I loved that intro 🙌🏻
Thank you!
well done! do you give classes for the skydio 2 that we could take online with you?
Not yet but drone classes are something I am working on!
Hi Jake i finally made my decision on the skydio 2 . Now need to decide what kit to get ?
I would recommend the sports upgrade if you can
Thanks for making sense of all this drone stuff. LoL... As a noob at this. I believe I will go with the Skydio 2 because it’s less worries for me having to navigate it. Thanks again!
You're welcome and GREAT choice
Great video and comparison between these two drones. Your video has made it harder for me to choose between these two and the DJI mini. As a beginner in the drone world, which would you recommend for me to get? I like to travel to international places and go hiking in mountains areas, where sometimes the wind can be an issue for the mini I believe. 🤔
I would recommend the Mavic Air 2 for that. I am releasing my full review of the Mavic Air 2 early next week and I really thing it is the best drone for first time drone buyers. I love the skydio and it is fantastic but you will be waiting months (at least) to get one currently. Hopefully that will change in the future, but until then I would recommend the Mavic Air 2. Cheers!!
Jake Sloan thanks for your input. Truthfully I would love to get a Skydio 2, but it’s seems to be double to price and there’s no telling when I would receive it now after the lockdown. Out of curiosity, do you think the FAA new rules will force people who have the DJI mini to register in the future?
I think that would be a few years away from happening if it happens at all. And to be clear the Mavic Mini and the Mavic Air 2 are very different drones. The Mini is under the required weight to have to register where the Mavic Air 2 is over. The Mavic Air 2 will handle much more wind etc than the mini will
Fantastic Review! I ride a motorcycle around the world -- Generally to amazing places visually -- I shoot photography. I have not used a drone although I've owned them. Main reason, alone, it takes too much time. If I had a drone that could follow me -- even at slow speeds along my route -- that could be my game changer. Do you think this is that drone? I do plan on upgrading my Mavic Mini to a Mini 2 though for size. I only wish this unit folded to a smaller form factor... Like you, each bit of space and weight counts. Is the Skydio 2 my savior for follow me on motorcycle?
The skydio is the drone that is purpose built for that however more difficult to get hold of. The Mavic mini and mini 2 do not have tracking like that. The Air 2 would be the next best choice for what you want to do filming and tracking wise. Cheers!
Thanks for the comparison! I can’t wait to see what SkyDio makes in the future, cause as much as I like DJI I’d rather invest in an American company; SkyDio just needs to step it up in my opinion.
Likewise I think Skydio will be doing some great things in the future!!
Looks like near Girdwood Alaska, great job!
micah bowen close. This is Seward 😏. Cheers
That was a badass movie.. great stuff ;)
Thank you!
Dang... I have the Skydio also the Mavic 2 zoom, not pro, was kind of on the fence about the Mavic Air 2 but now might have to get one ordered. I have the Mavic Air, Spark and the new Mavic mini which I also really like and the video that comes out of that little guy is really pretty good, getting filters for it in a few days. And like you said the video that come out of the Skydio, the first time I saw it I really, really like. I just received filters for it but the video on auto I think if phenomenal... Love you informative videos...
lol well what's one more drone to complete your collection! Thanks much!! Cheers
@@JakeSloan Just ordered it!! TX's
you're welcome!
How well do you think it would do for motocross I want to get one to follow me on trails while I ride but I'm not sure if they can keep up or not
The skydio would be the one it can go up to 36mph (depending on conditions) and still have full avoidance working
Please I would like to know which of the drone you’ve used for your dope intro ?
I filmed that with the Mavic Air 2! Cheers
Hi Jake! Thank you for these great and helpful informations. 👍No. 3182 comes with the best greetings from germany. KARSTEN
Cheers and thanks!!
