Roriza Reyes Well I think you can export it as a gif and I think in the export options there sould be some kind of loop option. I'm not sure but I have done this in photoshop, so maybe is the same.
Roriza Reyes lf you're talking about what he has shown in the beginning of the video without rendering the video; you can press the number 0 on the Numberpad key and it will show you a RAM preview of the final thing and keep looping over and over again Pressing SPACEBAR will not get you a real time playback by the way.
Wish I found your video first. Sifted through so many tutorials that weren't what I was looking for. Loved the fact that you showed a preview of what you'd be making FIRST so that your viewers can see whether or not this is something they wanted to sit through and learn. This was perfect and so clean!
it is SOOOOO easy to get out of control with shape layers, but basically its like comps, (or groups) so once you understand that, it gets easier, Glad you liked it!
You unpack more paradigm changing stuff in 18 minutes that I thought was possible. Incredible. To sit down and use these techniques now - It will save ridiculous amounts of time in creation as well as editing (because this stuff is so easily massage-able the way you built it) over whatever clunky way I might have attacked this. This kind of principle-rich tutorial is exactly what I needed. I look forward to many more!
I actually enjoyed watching this. Many other tutorials either have an annoying voice or skip certain steps with cutscenes. Easy to follow along and not get confused along the way. Thanks dude
Your right, I should do that more, BUT I did upload in 1080p, so you can turn that on and full screen it and its easier to see. Thanks for your comments.
I have been looking for a complete tutorial about the shapes, and I would not imagine that I could find it on one quick tutorial. Thanks a lot!! This is going to help me a LOT, cheers!!
Man, you dont even know how much this video helped me in my designing experience. It has a lot of things I've never figured out how to do. Thanks so much man :,)
I'm doing a infografics animation right now, and this is EXACTLY what i needed, i didn't have a clue it could be done so easily, its great that it has alot of parameters. Thanks for the tut
Great video! I'm still learning(got Creative Cloud in February and got so frustrated I'd actually shut After Effects off. Lately getting the hang of it though lol).
You should be able to precomp, but you might have problems with rasterization and 3d properties collapse, i'll have to try it. on Extrude, not sure, I don't use 3D extrude, it runs too slow on my system. You should be able to make a gear really easy with the way you described.
***** Being an editor for a cable network, I use all sorts of animations and elements of every type. I will let you know when I incorporate this into a project soon.
Yeah, I was thinking adding some 3D properties could make a really awesome animation using these principles. Great tutorial. I am wishing I had my Mac and After Effects here in training to try this out.
I'm new to after effects and I'm loving this tutorial! I guess it helps that I've already been using photoshop, illustrator and flash for many years now so After effects comes pretty easy. But this video is what I've been looking for to step up my skills.
Absolutely Awesome! I started with a more complicated vid you made more recently and decided to back track. Am so glad I did this helped a TON! Thank you, Mikey!
Very nice! Thanks for posting it, and for picking something simple so that I can focus on your technique. Sometimes it's difficult to see the control text, though. Mmmmmmaybe the occasional zoom so we can see your settings more clearly...?
Good tuto. And you can do math right in the property boxes in adobe products. So for your repeater settings, you could just input "360/5" in the rotation field and get the right amount for 5 instances. Helpful stuff.
I keep thinking about how to use this. I wonder, for example, about subbing it into a single composition and then making that and duplicates of it into 3D compositions, and having them intersect and interact with each other. I wonder if the shapes can be extruded. I wonder if a solid ring and a dashed ring can be bound in such a way as to resemble gears. The mind boggles!
Thank you for this very informative tutorial. You de-mystified the shape layer contents. This tutorial has several tutorials in it. Your style of teaching, how and why is exceptional. I also want to thank you for taking the time to produce them.
I found the solution. it may be annoying because you might have to start again but if you alt or options click when drawing the shape then you can edit the path. this works in cc I don't know about anything else.
Question: At 3:38, you use the bezier tool to create a control point on the curve that's in the front (on top in the layers) - the orange one. Then at 3:49, you grab the pink curve, which is behind the orange one and edit it. How do you do that? When I followed this tut, I had to turn the properties on separately so that I could get to the back one. It looks like you select the pink path, then de-select, then use the bezier tool to add a control point. But If I select the pink path, then click in an empty area, then go to use the bezier tool, it only affects the front path - the orange one.
you can click on the line and it should switch over to that property to manipulate. sometimes its hard to select the right things, and it might be easier to just select and deselect from the shape layer properties. Also if you offset them in time first (i did it second in the tut) it will make it easier.
***** Aha! I see what happened. I watched it again a few times in fullscreen. Your starting keyframe is slightly offset for the second curve. This lets you pull out a control point there, and once you do that, going to the top right where the keyframes overlap exactly is not an issue, because you have the second curve already selected. I saw you momentarily select the whole second curve (the transform control points showed up for scaling the curve) and I had though THAT was when focus switched to the second curve. I tried that to switch the selection, but could not pull a bezier point when the transform points were visible, and then when I clicked off, it just took me back to the first curve as soon as I tried to pull a bezier out of the overlapping points. Moral of the story, it looks like there is no "select" behind trick, but you just need an offset control point to switch curves.
Could you please explain again more explicitly why did you create a new group in repeater effect and how can triangles move away by the change in anchor position in the repeater effect again?
great tutorial! all i understand, and idea for yellow trianglishes was great. but i dont understand that why this happens when include this to group? :) i just want understand that
Thanks man this helped out a bunch, although i use Motion 5 it still gave me some tips on how to get my desired effect although i still have to do some tweaking :D
This is turning out to be one of my most popular videos!
Hi, I'm just learning AE. Excuse my stupid question but how do I loop what I've done so far? Thanks!
Roriza Reyes Well I think you can export it as a gif and I think in the export options there sould be some kind of loop option. I'm not sure but I have done this in photoshop, so maybe is the same.

DJ Rescia Thank you but it's actually not the preview but the final output I'm referring to. : )

For me this is the best "detailed-on the spot" tutorial on how to handle shape layers on after effects! Cheers man! Subscribed!

Thanks, plus its good to know I don't have an annoying voice :)

I think that adding one thumb up is just not enough to show how gratefulIi am. Thank u. looking forwards for other tutorials
Thanks for zooming in to the details. I wish all After Effects tutorials did this.
I've always been a bit reluctant to use shape layers for I didn't feel "in control".. now it's everything much clearer, great tutorial
I have been looking for a complete tutorial about the shapes, and I would not imagine that I could find it on one quick tutorial. Thanks a lot!! This is going to help me a LOT, cheers!!

Mickey you are awesome!!! thanks for all your nice tutorials...
You just gave me a better understanding of the Group feature and shape layers. Thanks.
You're totally right, I do math all of the time in the input box, don't know why I didn't do it then.
So thankful for this tutorial! I've been looking everywhere to figure out how to achieve this look/effect. Thanks so much!
thanks Mikey!!!! you do not imagine quite difficult is imagine how could people do animations like that, I know to do with circles thanks to you!!!!!
best AE tutorial i've ever seen.. thanks.. keep up the work
hey, I know it is almost 3 years late, but I just wanna say thank you very much for this tutorial! It really help me learn to use after effect
So awesome. I've been wanting to experiment with shape layers and make something exactly like this. You explained it so it became simple. Love it.
Just went through this video and love how easy you made it to create these elements! Thanks a ton!
I'm glad I could make it easy for you. Do you have any plans for this type of animation? I'd love to see what you come up with.
***** Being an editor for a cable network, I use all sorts of animations and elements of every type. I will let you know when I incorporate this into a project soon.
A great tutorial and very easy to follow. Thanks Mikey

Why do people dislike him!? Those are stupid. Mikey deserves more subs/likes
Its okay, 5 dislikes out of almost 100k views is pretty good.
Yeah. But you don't really deserve any dislikes. Or maybe the guy who disliked has a really good point. You never know I guess...
Thank You Mike, this video is really clear and helpful:)

Hi! I hope someone can help me. I want to reduce the ellipse path (07:20) but I don't have an option that says ellipse path at all..?
I have the same problem have googled and still cant find anything. do you no how yet?
I found the solution. it may be annoying because you might have to start again but if you alt or options click when drawing the shape then you can edit the path. this works in cc I don't know about anything else.
You can manually reduce the size of the path using the selection tool. hold down shift while moving the path
Thank you so much! You are so easy to understand, i learned how to do this in no time .
Thanks for this tut ..Great work Subscribed!!
Hi Mikey, thank you for this tutorial! I played around and put a 3D spin on it 3D Mograph circles
Amazing Skills pal ..... keep this good stuff coming.... thanks you
