Hey Ben, just enrolled in your master motion design course to give my videos a much needed upgrade - I'm already learning tons, and I'm glad to see that you're still pumping out videos. Never stop, and thanks for taking the time out of your day to make these ❤
This is great, what Id like to add is maybe a random wiggle shake, like a small two frames position error or solething to every separate layer or "cell" as the position of each cell sometimes moves or shakes a bit, you can see it in old disney movies. Something that occurred to me while watching the tut!
instead of using the paid plugin you can also use a bunch of AE glow instances and connect them via expressions. Set the radius of instance 2 to be 2 times the radius of isntance 1 and so on. Or for even more flexibility, considering the blooming and brightening of the image, use a simple blur on a second adjustment layer and either lower the opacity or set the blend mode to Screen, Add or even Lighten and lower the opacity. For the chromatic aberration of the plugin you can use a combination of blurs, transforms and channel mixers aswell.
Ben Marriott...... I got my first job as a video content creator and a large part of why I got the job is because of the Motion Design skills I picked up (largely from you!). What a guy. Any way just wanted to express my gratitude and say thank you.
Man, I really love your animation style and your attention to detail, for me it's really what stands out the most in your work, those little details! Thanks for the tutorial!
00:00 🎨 Embrace limitations to achieve a warm vintage feel in animations, focusing on restricted palettes and brush textures. 01:22 🚪 Frame-by-frame animation in Calipeg app for iPad is used for convincing door opening, emphasizing anticipation and easing into the final position. 02:43 🌌 Authentic vintage feel achieved by using real space images from NASA, avoiding artificial renders. 03:37 🔲 Adding subtle drop shadows to animated elements replicates the traditional animation process done on transparent celluloid sheets. 04:30 🔄 Looping texture with darkened curves and screen blending creates film-like damage effects for a vintage vibe. 06:14 🌟 Combining gaussian blur and sharpen effects, along with Deep Glow plugin, adds soft diffused blooming look, reminiscent of old screens. 08:08 🎨 Chromatic aberration and subtle adjustments in curves enhance vintage aesthetics without overwhelming the image. 09:31 🔄 Adding a subtle shake effect using the wiggle expression mimics a loose film reel or VCR playhead, further removing digital sheen. 10:23 🎞 Adding film grain with noise HLS Auto effect provides a final touch to simulate vintage film texture. 11:50 🎶 Suitable audio enhances the vintage mood, completing the retro animation experience.
This is incredible, you are incredible, Ben. Seriously, you're probably the best animator I've seen on UA-cam and for sure you're up there as one of the most talented artists I've witnessed. Will be using this for my space scene I had in mind, perfect timing :)
I love your channel so much! It has helped me immensely, and you're one of the only UA-camrs that always provide the file! I have been able to learn so much more from seeing the skeleton of it all.
Thrilled with your channel. I was looking for a tutorial like this earlier and came up with nothing. Luckily persistence got me here! Every tutorial of yours is a win.
Bro! That was incredible, I've never even thought about blurring and then sharpening. It seems so obvious when you think about it, but yeah this is definitely going to be something I take with me in my everyday carry. Thank you!
You definitely should! AE can be intimidating with all the panels and timelines, but it's so worth it once you realize it's not that scary and see your work coming to life :)
Amazing tricks, as always! One of my resolutions for 2023 is to redo all your Master Motion design course assignments. Thank you so much for sharing :) And yes! I was right. You have a minilogue! (nerd🧡) I saw it in the background of your new studio.
Thanks P3! That's such great exercise, and always great to see how much your skills have progressed. I'm planning on doing a video like that on the channel for a while, redoing one of my animation from years ago and seeing how I could improve it.
Amazing , as always ! I'm back to motion design after loong time and your tutorial is an unlimited source of help and motivation to step up ! Soon i can, i'll follow your lesson of Master motion Design ! Thx dude !
Looks great, but I have a couple nitpicks: 1. The skull should be covered in shadow before it rises from the fridge. The shadows should dynamically change on the skull. 2. I think some line boil/jitter on the skull might help sell the retro look better. Some more jitter and subtle, gradual color shifting (from damaged film) on the entire frame would also amp up the retro feel.
I just got into motion or animation (not sure if I'm correct ) and to tell u this makes me feel so dizzy 'coz I've never been this so eager to learn about something that really piqued my interest. I'm still on the process of learning the basics and I'm just using Alight Motion haha. I can't wait to buy a laptop so I can finally try Ae. Thanks for the video tho this really helps a lot!♥️
for those interested, there`s a free plugin for chromatic aberration "QCA3 in Plugin Everything", good option for those who are looking for this effect
Deep Glow is an outstanding effect, biggest issue is the registration errors that are constant. Nothing like sitting through an hour render only to see the huge Red X randomly flashing through frames..
As a beginner motion graphics designer, who never drew, what is your opinion, does it worth to start learning how to draw and easily start to learn how to do frame by frame animations? Or it's time consuming and can easily skip this part? I'm more into the 2d motion graphics, and I would like to do frame by frame, but i really suck at drwaing, and I'm scared to loose time, so I'm very interested what do you think
I just got in a motion design school, and you are definitely part of why I was accepted there ! Thank you so much for all your tutorials
That's amazing news! good luck Camille :D
So was I!
Which school?
Hi what encouraged you to go for it?
the dropshadow really CELLS the fact that it’s vintage.
Where were you when I was writing this?! XD

This is probably one of the best After Effects tutorials I've ever seen. You're a hero man.

Thanks so much! So much time is spent on tiny things wondering if anyone else notices. Glad that's appreciated :)

Thanks my friend! Hope this is some welcomed doom and gloom for you :)
The balance between clear instruction, insight, and entertainment value here is chefs kiss.
Another great one Ben! I love me some retro vintage!

Wow, lots of clever tricks in here, thanks for sharing
Thanks Shotty!
@@BenMarriott please can you make a video in how to use callipeg?
This was like ASMR to my eyes. Thank you, so relaxing and inspiring 💀
Dude, your animations are so cool!
Thanks my beast!
This channel should have millions of subscribers. Thanks a lot brother. I appreciate your work ❤️
Just came here to say how much I appreciate the excellent use of the Predator handshake
i can't stop watching your videos Ben. Too good!
Damn, was not expecting the Minilogue jumpscare! Synths and animation, my two great loves. Great tutorial, definitely going to give this a whirl.
Thrilled with your channel. I was looking for a tutorial like this earlier and came up with nothing. Luckily persistence got me here! Every tutorial of yours is a win.
That blur & sharpness gag caught me off guard :D well done!
Every time I watch one of your videos I am truly amazed. You are truly talented.
omg you are doing the music as well 🤯
I like the frequency and amplitude of your jokes in this video.
Ayyyyye! Amplitude will be increased every video from here :D
The best lesson I took from this is that effects should be felt and not "seen" by the viewer. Thanks for the great tutorial!
this was so well done that it still tricks me intro thinking its actually vintage whenever it comes up to my youtube homepage
Great that you gave a shout-out to Callipeg, it's absolutely the best, and very unknown still.
love the minilogue cameo at the end!
Thanks mate! Just starting my synth journey, but don't be surprised if there are some more cameos in the future :D
@@BenMarriott do it! Would LOVE a cool synth animation at some point haha
i dont even have the ability to try any of these techniques, but the vibe is so incredible i just had to keep watching!
"1 frame of shadow can make or break a freezer animation....so doooo be careful" lmao this is gold
I’m so excited to learn AE, I love vintage style animation so much, this is amazing.
Wow doing blur and sharpen together. never wouldve thought of that
Bro! That was incredible, I've never even thought about blurring and then sharpening. It seems so obvious when you think about it, but yeah this is definitely going to be something I take with me in my everyday carry. Thank you!
This was lovely. I'm an illustrator and have zero experience in AE, but this is incredibly inspiring might have to start messing around. Thanks!
You definitely should! AE can be intimidating with all the panels and timelines, but it's so worth it once you realize it's not that scary and see your work coming to life :)

@@BenMarriott Absolutely great idea!
Amazing content as always! And thank you for discovering me Callipeg!
Best youtuber i ever seen before 💕💕
Deep glow, flow, fxconsole, saber and reposition anchor are must have
One of your best videos yet, and that’s saying something! Thanks Ben
You're definitely the GOAT when it comes to motion design. Where did you get that synth from? did you also make that yourself?
This is my new favorite youtube video, right now! WELL DONE
Wow that is too nice, this like the universe plug!
Amazing , as always ! I'm back to motion design after loong time and your tutorial is an unlimited source of help and motivation to step up ! Soon i can, i'll follow your lesson of Master motion Design ! Thx dude !

Plzz a tutorial on how to make a normal camera shooted video look like realistic aesthetic retro look
Those effects should work pretty much the same on footage with some tweaking (besides the drop-shadow) give it a go :)
Ben, you are an animation-psycho. I love y--it.
I suck at art but I ate this video like its cake
such a great video! love the vintage look
