you don't need to animate less because sometimes if you Wanna see your skills on editing you need to animate more and if you got the experience and you know your just so good you don't need to.
Ben!! your videos are mind blowing, youtube recently started recommending your videos for me, and the amazing thing is, many time i look at the title and i say "nah not interested in that" then i read the channel name and things become "oh it's by ben, i'm sure i'll learn something new or get amazed by sheer beauty of art" and it's been true every single time. really thank you so much for the teaching and artistic creations you make.
Let us take a moment to appreciate the depth of these tips, deliciously delivered for free. You spoil us, Ben. Thank you for your expertise and generosity.
Absolutely. When I rewatch it every 5 years or so, I'm secretly rooting for that scene to come on. The term 'immersed' has been overused but applies in full in that particular case. Incredible how much they conveyed with such a deceivingly simple scene. And it was done again with the Patlabor movies!
Making a wild GITS appear out of nowhere was such a boss move. That scene in particular is one that will forever stick, such a masterclass in 'slow. the fuck. down.' when it comes to editing, cinema and animation.
On top of a lot of super amazing tips that are actually key technics you end the video with a ghost in the shell meditation. I love you so strong that I need a teleporter to go give you a hug! Thank you Ben.
Excellent tips, the last one is the most hard to achieve being motion designers, we do have the urge to move everything (even if it's just a flicker or a jitter)
It's worth playing around with radii of the glow more than anything. I probably should have made the first 1 smaller than the default 10, but I find controlling with the curves so udeful. You can also animate the curves property as well to change the glow even more easily.
thank you for this beautiful and pertinent end message !! loved the video :) i'm just starting with motion design, I love it ! but i tend to find really tiring seeing animations overly dynamic
Oh wow. The first step is exactly what I was looking for, as I have struggling to understand whato to do to add almost similar look of my end result illustrations! Thank you again Ben for the wonderful tips.
glow as adjustment, but esp. the screen blending mode is a fantastic tip! trying to get those dupe'd glow fx working compared to deep glow has always been WAAY too finicky!! thx!
Yo fellas, if you wanna to loop your wiggle expression, simply use this piece of code in your position properties: freq = 0.8; amp = 45; loopTime = 10; t = time % loopTime; wiggle1 = wiggle(freq, amp, 1, 0.5, t); wiggle2 = wiggle(freq, amp, 1, 0.5, t - loopTime); linear(t, 0, loopTime, wiggle1, wiggle2) Simply change the values and that's it, you can loop your animation and have a seamless jumpcut with the same frames at the start and at the end of your timeline
A slight variation suggestion to make it even more versatile (depending on your use-case): __________ f = 2; // frequency a = 40; // amplitude loopTime = thisComp.duration; // loop time matches comp duration // -------- t = time % loopTime; wiggle1 = wiggle(f, a, 1, 0.5, t); wiggle2 = wiggle(f, a, 1, 0.5, t - loopTime); linear(t, 0, loopTime, wiggle1, wiggle2); __________ I've often needed expressions to be mapped to the comp-duration. Using this approach will make it automatically match your comp length no matter how much you change it 👌
besides the informative side of your videos, I really enjoy this 80's/90's vibe, it resonates with me a lot :D it's almost like I'm 6 again, sitting next to the TV totally amazed by sounds, moves and the story in animation :D
Great video Ben! The whole "animate less" idea is something I've been reflecting on quite a bit. When is it useful or just interesting and/or validating to my skills? Thanks for touching on that
Definitely a master of his craft. I really dislike many of his stylistic choices and preferences, but undeniably there's a lot to learn! The reflection was really simple but effective!
I'm beyond grateful for all your videos! And this one in particular got me so hooked. I'm dreaming of the day I'll be joining your course. Thanks a billion times.

can you give an idea of how to do that in 6:37? plz~~what kind of effect it works for it?
Love the reference of Ghost in the Shell. It's the same shot that made me fall in love with animation. The subtlety, thanks for reminding me again.

that Ghost in the shell shot is absolutely exceptional. i ve never been immersed and invested in a world more by a simple sequence

Really happy you put that last tip in, always a good reminder in todays landscape

that reflection one is a game changer! Thanks Ben
I've never seen such beautiful animations in my life. Thank god I found you
that glow effect was so simple but so genius
Ah that glow effect is exactly what i need!

Love this one man! Great little trick for glows; here I am just teaching people to stack blurs and this was right in front of me the whole time!
I love you for the quickness of the video, you understand what to say and only that
All your videos are super helpful to all of us! You're single-handedly progressing the level of so many intermediate motion designers
Kinda scary how valuable this super short video is
One of the best videos I've ever seen
Oh wow. The first step is exactly what I was looking for, as I have struggling to understand whato to do to add almost similar look of my end result illustrations! Thank you again Ben for the wonderful tips.
You're welcome pal! It's a bit repedative over big scenes, but it's so satisfying to see come together :)
Love a sneaky Whitlams reference...
